Option 3: Tea Set
Title: Professor Layton

First of all. THIS TOPIC SHOULD REMAIN SPOILER FREE UNLESS YOU MARK SPOILERS AT THE TOP OF YOUR POST.

So I know not many people play these games, but I love them. Let's start out with a poll, which game fit you like best? I think for me probably Diabolical Box, but it's pretty even with Unwound Future.

Really looking forward to the Last Specter on 10-17 and the movie, Eternal Diva, on 11-8.

My vote goes to Unwound Future, but I like a lot Diabolical Box too. Oh! And the movie is gonna be released in English? Great! Didn't know!  :D

Over here, in Australia, the 'Diabolical box' is named 'Pandora's Box' and it is exactly the same except for the title.

My vote would be for 'the Diabolical/Pandora's box because it is the only one I have actually played.

Oh, you haven't heard the Eternal Diva soundtrack yet, have you? Hmm...Most of it is arranged music from the first several games. Listen:

The Phoenix Wright's theme is the Gyakuten Saiban Orchestra song, so it's not like it's a new song, but it still is amazing. Love Gyakuten Saiban Orchestra <3

Prof Layton's theme is really nice too.

GWAH HA HAH!! XD That's priceless...
I've played them all, and they were the best games ever- besides Pokemon, of course. The Unwound Future was my favorite, because the music was so much catchier. That helps, when you're listening to the puzzling theme and absentmindedly completing a challenge.

Really? I think Unwound Future's music was good, but the Puzzle theme from Diabolical Box was best. The London 3 (Live) theme is also good from UF but the in game version is annoying...all that goddamn accordion! XD the only theme in game I thought was fantastic was the Puzzle Battle theme... and of course the Unwound Future main theme as well as the research facility and mobile fortress. All the others are either sort of good or just okay.

According to IGN, Mask of Miracle still has classic 2D cutscenes (really happy). The characters have 3D models or something though and the backgrounds are 3D. You would think cartoonish things would be awkward in 3D, but it sounds like it was done well.

Look at the dialogues, the models are in 3D and they are cartoonish, and they did a pretty good job there. Still, full 3D cutscenes would be better.

Well I just had no idea who the villain in the fourth game was until you said that. -_- so that's just me.

So I finished the game.

MY REVIEW.

Professor Layton and the Last Specter is a phenomenal game. It's Professor Layton, after all. He's back with a VENGEANCE. Same basic format used in Unwound Future. It's a great formula, and it hasn't been messed with at all since practically the first game.

Main points of the game:

THE PUZZLES: 9/10
The puzzles are as great as ever, and perhaps a little more challenging towards the beginning than in previous games. Despite this, I encountered only one puzzle the entire game that I could not solve. As opposed to previous games, where I found the need multiple times to take a break from a puzzle, then come back later. So although the puzzles towards the beginning might have been a little tougher, overall they weren't as hard as other games. There isn't even a "final stage" level filled with ridiculous puzzles as there was in previous games. I also finished the game with 50 or so hint coins. However, these proved to be good use in the post-game puzzle challenges, which are ridiculously tough in their own right.

THE SOUND: 9/10
The music is possibly at an all time high for the Layton series. The title screen music, "The Last Specter's Theme," is a live version and extremely jazzy (like other main themes for the series). The rest of the music in the game turns out somewhat whimsical and wistful. The most prominent theme, "Misthallery's Many Canals," is extraordinary in its simple lonely beauty. The new puzzles theme is quite lackluster, turning out more annoying than anything, though. It's definitely the low point of all puzzle themes. The "Puzzle Deductions" theme, however is really jazzy and catchy (but is only heard sparsely). Overall, the music is pretty awesome. Some themes are bland and get old really quickly, but mostly the music is wonderful. And it's all high quality.

THE PRESENTATION: 10/10
Graphics, art, voice acting, cutscenes...everything's the same as in previous games, or better.

THE STORY: 8/10
The story (that of a giant monster attacking a small rural town) is original and compelling...but... it will disappoint those familiar with the Layton games. Those insane, bizarre plot twists that we've come to expect from Layton games? They're here, but they're not so incredible, and I think only once in the entire game did I say to myself, "Wow...that was crazy." The secret behind the specter was not so unexpected or crazy. Of course, this is the beginning of the second trilogy, so maybe it's trying to mimic the simplistic style of Curious Village? That being said, it's interesting to see Layton's first meeting with Luke. And after the credits, the final two cutscenes should really bring two smiles to your face--the first one of pure happiness, the second a bit malicious.

OVERALL: 9/10

Consensus: Not as good as Unwound Future, but with all the appeal of Diabolical Box, Professor Layton and the Last Specter is a gaming treat that puzzle-lovers and Layton fans alike will warmly receive.

Lol I like trying to mimic professional sites' review styles.

Who is your favorite main Layton character?

Professor Hershel Layton, of course
    - 4 (66.7%)
Luke Triton...duh
    - 2 (33.3%)
Flora Reinhold; the series just wouldn't be the same without her.
    - 0 (0%)
Emmy. She made a great assistant.
    - 0 (0%)

No love for Flora or Emmy.

Alright new poll and also a note about the movie, Eternal Diva. I went back and watched it for the first time since I first saw it and noticed a TON of cameos and game references. Here's what I noticed:

During the first scene showing Layton and Luke in their seats at the theater, Beluga, the owner of the Molentary Express, walks past them through the aisle.
During Janice's flashback, when she speaks to the little girl in the street, a man similar to Stachenscarfen walks past her.
When Janice and the young girl are at the restaurant, you can see Granny Riddleton at the table next to theirs.
When Layton and Luke get out of the Laytonmobile to enter the theater, Babette, the woman on the Molentary Express who lost Tom, walks past them.
When the puppet on stage is addressing the audience, the camera pans across the audience and you can see Beluga once more.
When Emmy interrogates the family in London, Claudia the cat is on their couch.
In Dr. Schrader's office, the Elysian Box is on the table next to the television, and Babette and Beluga are once more visible on the beach that the television shows.

If anyone else notices other cameos like that, let me know!

^^^this. I honestly can't decide, but I did notice that although the beginnings of each song are different, they all seem to morph into the same style jazzy accordion. Yeah if you'll notice, the beginning of Elysian Box uses the same chord progression from the beginning of Layton's theme. In addition, the overall style of them are quite similar.

All right, this poll is for your favorite town of the games.

I love the feel of St. Mystere, with its quirky inhabitants and air of mystery. I'm also fond of the quiet beauty of Misthallery. And of course, Layton and Luke seem most at home in London and Future London. But in the end, I had to vote for Folsense, because the lonely secret behind the town is the most sad and beautiful thing in the entire series--the bright lights of the town, the lonely air about it....I just love the feel of Folsense.

Also, I noticed something today. SPOILER ALERT FOR CURIOUS VILLAGE AHEAD

In Granny Riddleton's profile in Curious Village, it says she "is further proof of Bruno's bizarre sense of humor." This would imply that she's a clockwork robot and Bruno created her. But, she appears in all the later games too, including Last Specter which takes place BEFORE Curious Village. Weird.

Hmmm... now what village to vote for. (This is going to be a hard one too.)

Oh and... Spoiler ALERT!
hold down the left mouse button and drag down here to see it.
---> :I noticed that too, maybe Bruno made Granny Riddleton that long ago. (How long has Flora been waiting in that village?)

Haha, I have done something kinda similar to that before. XD
Though as Layton would say it. "Critical thinking is the key to success."

Yeah, it's going to be pretty sad to see the series go,
at least we still got two more games.

Oh wait, did they really just say it's the last game for Layton. (As in, the series might keep going?)
As much as it would't be the same without Layton,
I wouldn't mind playing a game with Luke as the main character. (especially if he somehow ended up like future Luke.)
Title: Re: Professor Layton

I just don't get how they're going to end the series NOW...At the end of Unwound Future, Luke mailed Layton a letter that he had a mystery to solve over in America...O.o

There's gotta be more. There's no way they're just gonna leave the series hanging with a Cliffhanger like that. No way.
Title: Re: Professor Layton

I thought of that too,
maybe that was to show that the Professor and Luke had many more adventures together even after the games.

(Well, who knows what Level 5 is going to do after the sixth game.)

Okay, so for those who have played Diabolical Box, here's something I'm wondering.

Sammy Thunder is Beluga's NEPHEW, according to the profiles. Beluga only had one brother, Anton.

Did Anton have more kids he didn't know about or something?!?!?

I started the Curious Village, and I like it because it makes me feel smart :P Im not going to read the rest of this thread just in case of spoilers, so bear with me if I say something that has already been said. I like the idea of the multiple large-scale mysteries at once, but I feel bad for Layton since he has to handle so much at once and everyones so rude to him. If I was him Id just leave the village, but I guess hes too absorbed in the puzzles and that would kinda ruin the game

Title: Re: Professor Layton
Post by: Nebbles on November 18, 2012, 02:07:55 PM
The notes yes, and just putting it all together.
Title: Re: Professor Layton
Post by: BonusPwnage on November 18, 2012, 02:09:57 PM
One thing that helps me is listening to individual parts of a song again and again, and trying to hear every note. Every time I hear a note I didn't before, I hum it (so I don't forget it) while navigating back to the software I use to plonk it into place.

I've arranged a bit of Layton music, more than anyone on the site I think. I just finished an ensemble arrangement of "Monte d'Or: Carnival Night" but idk if I should put it up.

I think the problem with "The Toy Train" is that it would really require three hands to sound perfect. I might try to arrange it though, it's an interesting piece.

Title: Re: Professor Layton
Post by: SlowPokemon on November 18, 2012, 04:13:49 PM
Okay, I'll see what I can do. Right now I'm arranging "The One-Stop Shop" from Miracle Mask, which you probably know is the most adorable little waltz theme ever, so I think I'll try to finish that first. I doubt it will take me long. XD It actually reminds me a bit of the Swapnote theme in structure.

Yeah, we do need more Layton music on the site. :/ Hm.

Thanks!

As for "The Toy Train"... it really won't be a good piano arrangement. I figured out some of the chords, but it's too difficult a project for what it will become. I'd have to have the piano bouncing in the left hand while the right hand plays the melody, which is really quite difficult and most likely wouldn't sound as good. I think that's why I dropped that project in the first place (I had considered arranging it before).

I'm working on "Descole's Theme" instead. Sorry Nebbles!

Iris is just the name of the song. It doesn't really have a meaning. There's a full version that plays over the credits that I tried to have you listen to. :P It's so beautiful. The Japanese version has lyrics and it's even better.

Title: Re: Professor Layton
Post by: SlowPokemon on November 18, 2012, 07:05:55 PM
It was written for the game, like all of the Layton end themes.

Interestingly enough, though, Tomohito Nishiura (the composer for the Layton games) only wrote the credits music for one game: Curious Village ("End Theme"). This is the only credits music with no lyrics (in Japanese).

"Iris" (Diabolical Box), "Time Travel" (Unwound Future), "Paxmaveiti" (Last Specter), and "Mysterious Flower" (Miracle Mask) were all written and performed by other artists and not included on the original soundtracks, besides the Iris music box theme and Time Travel piano theme. I like all of them, Iris being my favorite and Mysterious Flower being my least favorite (Layton song of all time).

Also, I arranged Descole's Theme.

Thats pretty cool that they get real artists to sing songs for them :D

I have a few questions about the game that have been bugging me:
(sorry about the small font but if someone gets their game ruined by these spoilers I'd feel really bad)

If Beluga was Anton's brother, his only sibling, then how is Sammy his nephew? Does he have a wife that they never mention? He doesnt seem like the type who would be called "uncle" by a family friend, comsidering he seems to hate Sammy

Was Chelmey, Beluga, and the other people even at Folsense at all, or were they just hallucinations as well? If they were, then how did an imaginary dog rip open his pocket. If they werent there, then how did Layton's mind know what the ripped up picture looked like?

Nigel was a hallucination as well, and Im under the impression that Anton was the only actual person in the village. How did he ge food then? I doubt someone of his status would have a farm, but if he believed that Nigel was serving him dinner each night, how did he survive for 50 years on nothing?

Sorry if I ruined the game with my over analyzing :D

Post by: Bubbles on November 18, 2012, 07:23:49 PM

Title: Re: Professor Layton
Post by: SlowPokemon on November 18, 2012, 07:44:01 PM
It's all in 4/4.
SPOILERS AHEAD.

1. Beluga likely has a wife. He and Anton have no other siblings.
2. Chelmey and Barton also hallucinated the village, but they were definitely actually there.
3. Nigel was real, he was there at the end. Some of the others in the village, like Pavel and Stahcenscarfen (and I'm assuming Joseph) were also real.
Title: Re: Professor Layton
Post by: Bubbles on November 18, 2012, 07:55:20 PM
SPOILERS

But if Chelmey was there, how did the dog rip his coat? If the dog was real, then how did the fake grocer give Layton a steak to give him? Nigel and the other people were real, but they all left and went to Dropstone. You can see in the ending credits Nigel going to say hello to Anton when he goes back with the group to Dropstone, so he was real but the one that Layton met in the castle was a hallucination.  Pavel and Stahcenscarfen were actually there? I just thought that they were placed there since Layton and Luke remembered them from the Curious Village, and that Joseph was Layton's subconcious telling him that something wasnt right about the town

The village did exist, it was just extremely run-down due to the fact of people hallucinating, thinking it was still a hey-day place...I'd pretty much agree with Slow, except perhaps they were all there, just really really REALLY old, kinda like Anton? Idk. But yeah, there's plot holes here and there...

And don't even get us started on The Unwound Future's HUGE cliffhanger.
OMG.

The Layton games are so underrated, and I think that's only because so little people in America know about it. Layton is hardly iconic, compared to other characters, like Mario or Sonic, yet I love his games just as much (if not more) then theirs.

Part of that love, for me, would be that the Layton games have the most dynamic plot lines out of any game I've ever played. And I just can't resist an intriguing story in a video game.

Hmm. You need 999.

Also, Layton games aren't underrated, they're just not well-known. Their ratings are actually pretty good.

^this! I do hope they bring this game out in the west, it brings together two of my favourite franchises. There are already some videos up on YouTube of the Japanese version - I sneaked a peak and I definitely want it even more now!

I ink my favourite professor Layton game has to be the curious village, just because it was a real mystery to me, I had no idea what to expect! Now that I know something is always fantastical with the Layton series, I kinda know to expect something out of the ordinary!

There were seven chapters just like Diabolical Box: like last specter had the same amount as curious village and likely the sixth game will have as many as unwound future. It wasn't that much shorter--though there were far fewer puzzles than all the other games except curious village (though the daily puzzles are phenomenal)

Got the game and finished it. I wasn't that impressed with it in some aspects, unfortunately. I don't know if I just am getting used to the Layton-esque plots, but I knew who the Masked Gentleman was almost immediately, which left little mystery to what was happening. It also missed some sort of whoomph? I guess the game didn't really hold any danger or mystery.
And I agree, it seemed much shorter than the other games, and there were less puzzles that I got stumped on. That might be because of the episodes in the past, though - they took up time without progressing the current plot forwards.

However, the music was fantastic. I was also incredibly pleased with the 3D effects - while I didn't like them based on the trailers, they turned out fantastic and gorgeous. Exploring the areas was a joy, too! And of course, we can't forget the past events and the character design.

But oh my, that little clip after the credits had me bouncing around in my seat :D I can't wait for the next game!

I agree, everything happening in Monte d'Or was incredibly predictable and a bit tired especially compared to the older Layton plots (particularly Last Specter). The Stansbury chapters were interesting but added little to the story other than the Randall / Henry / Angela / Alphonse character development -- the story in those chapters was already revealed to you by present-day Layton so there were very few surprises. And I hated the Akbadain Ruins level -- it was new, but very boring and repetitive. Really interrupted the flow. The plot was too Laytonesque to surprise series veterans. However, the entire last chapter was a pure delight, Layton at its best. Moved me to tears, despite the plot being a bit sappy and contrived even for Layton.

Quote from: November on January 01, 2013, 07:17:50 PMHowever, the music was fantastic.

Totally agree. I see you've read my review of the soundtrack. (My personal favorite track is "Monte d'Or: City of Miracles")

Same thoughts, I was violently against the 3D character models at first but after seeing how beautiful they looked and how gorgeous the 2D backdrops and puzzles were I really enjoyed the visual aspects. I still prefer the 2D style though. ;P

However...I thought this story was alright...the ending didnt really...blow me away...I could tell who the mask gentleman was before it was revealed. Of course...not gonna say who it was...:D

But I thought the gameplay was really good! There was a new style in this game when it was Layton and Randall's flashback. It was like a...legend of zelda style...on ze DS...LOL

though I was sick, so the puzzles did take my brain quite a bit longer this time round.  :P

Though yes, that clip after credits. Epic.  ;D

So now I have to wait a whole year for the next game...

She says goodbye, so unless shes sacrificing herself (which I can actually see happening :/) I dont think shell die. Maybe she becomes the foster mom of that mummy?

Speaking of that I dont get Flora's whole thing. Who does she belong to? I doubt the law enforcement would just let Layton have her, and she randomly appeared on the train in the Diabolical Box telling them not to leave her anymore. So did layton go through that whole adventure in the Curious village, proving himself as a good replacement father for her, only to not even take care of her?

About time for another poll. I'm surprised the Longons were the most popular, Folsense is my favorite, followed closely by St. Mystere and Misthallery. Anyway, the next poll will be about favorite games (I may have done this before, but before Miracle Mask came out). I'm voting Diabolical Box.

Im sorry but Unwound Future wins XD

Flora was in it (omg Im already forgetting this is bad) but it seemed like they kind of just shoved her in there because they had to. I cant remember if she actually did anything substantial except apparently make things worse according to the Layton wikia? I cant remember D: But if I replay it Ill cry again

Yeah, definitely don't spoil Unwound Future. Don't go to any Layton fan site.

Also after replaying Curious Village the story is way more simplistic, you need to start with this one. Not only does it acquaint you with the Layton style and story, it will seem so unpolished after you play the other ones.

Fantastic line in Last Specter (no spoilers, when you touch an object to get commentary):

Emmy: I stepped on a nut!
Luke: I stepped on a bolt!
Professor Layton: Oh dear. I seem to have stepped on a hexagonal spanner.

And there's one in either Last Specter or Miracle Mask where you touch a candle three times.

Luke: Hot!
Luke: Hot! Hot!
Luke: Hot! Hot! Hot!
Emmy: I don't think you should touch that, Luke...
Title: Re: Professor Layton

That's probably what I was thinking of, maybe it's a different one that Emmy says something.

There is one in Miracle Mask where there's a mirror in the hotel room--
Luke: Professor, your star apprentice is reflected in the mirror!
Emmy: Professor, your star assistant is reflected in the mirror!
Layton: Oh! I spy a refined gentleman reflected in the mirror!

When Arianna threw the rock at Loosha and said "I don't want to be your friend anymore!" I lost it. It was sad enough the first time, but now I know the whole reason she was trying to break the dam down and it hurts TT^TT

I loved Curious Village's ending!

I'm not really sure if this is a spoiler or not due to my lack of knowledge about future (no pun intended) games in the series, but I have a question:

There was this weird explorer guy (I forget his name) that appeared in a few scenes towards the end of Curious Village, but he didn't seem to play any role in the plot. Is he significant in later games?

Pauley creeped me out, if he's the one I'm thinking of. He didnt really have any memorable lines/plot signifigance (though Ibrealy remember this game :P)

Also, I'm having a problem. Im trying to find my absolute favorite version of Layton's theme (blue, no peeking at things to come!) and I can't :( I know its a live version, and it wouldn't be from Miracle Mask since I haven't listened to those yet. Live also includes Eternal Diva. I'm positive that its not his live theme from Curious Village, nor Cold Open from Eternal Diva. What other remakes of his theme are there? The only way I can really explain it is that it has a very "emotional" violin
Title: Re: Professor Layton

...anything from Unwound Future?
Title: Re: Professor Layton
Post by: Bubbles on January 23, 2013, 03:16:03 PM
Are there any live versions of it on that game? I know its live. I just checked a few others, and its not The Great Escape from Eternal Diva either

Try the "Press Start" symphony version:

It starts after the puzzle theme, it's very good.

Post by: Bubbles on January 23, 2013, 03:23:14 PM
Nope :( I've heard the song before, but now I can't find it again. I tried the Ace attourney crossover one too. Its a single violin playing the main tune (along with the accordian), and it just uses dynamics and other techniques really well I guess. Specifically, I remember for one powerful note played on the violin (a really high one), but I doubt thats much help :P
Title: Re: Professor Layton
Post by: SlowPokemon on January 23, 2013, 03:27:42 PM
If it isn't "Record of Memories" (second half) then look at the other main themes from the games. They're quite similar, and that's all the versions of the theme beside "The Mystery Explained" (basically a carbon copy of Cold Open and The Great Escape).

My favorite is the original, personally.

Holy crap the arranged Layton music in Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney is just flawless. Amazing ones:

"About Town"
"A Calm Afternoon"
"More Puzzles"
"The Town's Past"
"Quiet Moments"
"The Professor's Deductions"
"Misgivings" <--sadly the only one from Miracle Mask :( Probably because they use the same soundfonts.

So Miracle Mask

Spoilers (obviously ::))

First of all, DAWWWWW. For many reasons too. I predicted literally everything once I realized that Henry wasnt the Masked Gentleman. But what I dont get is that after 18 years of Hershel living with the guilt of letting his friend die, he just leaves? After the ending they all just got in the Latonmobile and left Monte d'Or. Wouldn't he spend a little time with his friend? Sure, he could've and they just skipped time to when they left, but still.
Flying Masked Gentleman? They explained everything but left that hanging. Also, how did Randall get so dark skinned? At first I thought it was from 18 years of living in the desert, but in the flashbacks they showed him like that a month or so after he was found by the village. Also Henry and Angela were the same tone while they were living in Monte d'Or the whole time.

Yes, I cried. But if I has to rank the series on which games made me cry the most, this would be at the bottom, just above Curious Village. It was really sweet, but the only times I cried was a tear or two at the flashback with the robot and in the credits when they showed the artwork of Dalston crying when he saw Randall. How could you not cry at that :3

Also now I finally understand the Azran legacies trailers :DD

Spoliers...YESS XD

Well yeah...that's why I thought MM wasn't really completed yet. I also thought it was strange when layton just left. Like whaat? XD I would like...stay with him for a few days or even months! But remember the credits? When they show you the pictures of the past and now the future...They did show how they were spending time together after the case was solved and how the cut randell's hair back to it's original style. So i assumed that went for a few days....
The flying part...I assume it was like some stunt thing...LOL

Oh, to answer some of your comments if you want...
Spoiler
Normally at the end of these games they show that takes places after the game in the credits pictures.
(Like when the Professor was having tea with everyone, and that was after Randall's haircut. Who knows how long they were there.))

As for the Masked Gentleman flying... well, they found a way to make people look like they were floating,
I think something close to that was done. (it would also explain how he disappeared.)

As for Randall having dark skin, I recall a picture (in the top secret menu) of the village Randall lives in after falling,
explained that the people there spent a lot of time outside working. (Which means a lot of sun time.)
While Henry and Angela probably spent most of their time indoors, in the ruins, or/and outside at night.
Though I did noticed in the credits Randall's skin does get much lighter after or before his haircut.

Title: Re: Professor Layton
Post by: SlowPokemon on February 15, 2013, 07:34:05 AM
Well firstly he didn't play the whole thing. But aside from that, while Last Specter's setting is probably the loveliest, prettiest of the games and the gameplay is the most polished of all the Nintendo DS titles, its plot is lacking in terms of realism and development, seeming more like a simple fairy tale than a complex mystery.

Seriously, some parts of the plot had me a bit annoyed:
Spoiler
It's one thing to slip Luke's talking to animals in as an inside joke, but it's quite another to have it be a major plot point. I found it a bit too ridiculous, even for this series. While the plot was gripping, its conclusion (save for the death of Loosha) just wasn't as satisfying as previous (and later) installments. I think the game's best moment didn't come until the introduction of Descole, which was just great. Up to that, it was Laytonesque without being very complicated.

So apparently there was supposed to be "dark" versions of Layton and Pheonix in their crossover game, BUT IT NEVER MADE IT THROUGH

Has anyone else noticed the multiple examples of extremely flawed logic displayed in Eternal Diva?

for example, Layton says that the opera is based off of the legend of the eternal kingdom of ambrosia, yet he also states hat their only knowledge of the kingdom comes from the seal! How much can you learn just from that one little piece of stone??
Title: Re: Professor Layton
Post by: SlowPokemon on February 17, 2013, 02:37:57 PM
It was probably a legend based on that. Word of mouth. It's not actual history--it's kind of like how we make up legends about Atlantis.
Title: Re: Professor Layton
Post by: Bubbles on February 17, 2013, 05:35:13 PM
YEAH KMAN DONT SPEAK AGAINST LAYTON

But I dont think Layton considered the story "knowledge" of the Ambrosia civilization because it was pretty farfetched, with living forever and all that stuff
Title: Re: Professor Layton
Post by: Bubbles on February 17, 2013, 08:29:06 PM
So we watched the movie!

Spoiler
...well, sort of. My dad fell asleep within the first 5 minutes, so it was just my mom and sister then. At the end, my sister kept asking things like "WHY DOES SHE HAVE TO GO. WHERES DEENA". And they both conplained about it being confusing. When I asked my mom which parts were confusing, she said "The parts when I had my eyes closed". She secretly liked it though ;)

So yeah. Also, another thing I noticed. Whistler said that he wrote the opera, so does that mean he wrote the music or the story, or both? If he wrote the story, the whole thing could just be made up as an excuse for the "eternal life" that Ambrosia was said to have.

Well the good news is that Azran Legacies is as good as guaranteed. Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney? Maybe not.

So today as I was on the bus ride to school, I looked outside the window and saw a street called "Barton Run". So being myself, I immediately thought of Chelmey yelling at Barton for something he did wrong, and Barton hustling away (in that cute little backwards-leaning run I imagine he does).

We kept driving when I saw a shop called "Shrayder's Barber". Of course Dr. Schrader owns a barber shop

Just when I thought my day couldn't get any better, I passed a place called "Dove's Funeral Home". Not only was it Dove, but it was a FUNERAL HOME

I cant tell if Layton really is everywhere or I am slowly being overtaken by these games

So I've finally introduced this series to myself. I've now played the first three and the Lost Future is surely the best so far. I like how original the games' music is although I usually don't like accordion at all. Now gotta get the fourth game, I haven't heard that much good stuff about it but let's see...

I was going to compare PL to Ace Attorney but I came to conclusion that they're not that comparable after all.

As of today, Level-5's Professor Layton spinoff, "Layton Brothers: Mystery Room," is available on the US App Store for iPhone, iPod, and iPad. I usually dislike spinoffs, but hey it's Professor Layton for crying out loud and it is made by Level-5.

The app is free, but part of the game does require purchasing. I think I read that total, the in-app purchases are about $5 which isn't bad. I hope this game is great.

Just in case someone is interested.

I have translated the list of pieces in this book, based on the table of contents shown:

1. Theme of Professor Layton
2. Theme of the Diabolical Box
3. Theme of the Last Time Travel
4. Theme of the Devil's Flute
5. Theme of the Mask of Miracle
6. Theme of the Legacy of Supercivilization A
7. London 3
8. Walking in the Town*

The last one says "Walking in the Town ~ (Japanese stuff)" and I'm not quite sure what it means. As far as what those are in English:

1. Professor Layton's Theme
2. The Elysian Box Theme
3. The Unwound Future
4. The Last Specter's Theme
5. Mask of Miracles Theme
6. Unknown, but likely "The Azran Legacy Theme" or something similar
7. More London Streets
8. About Town (again, idk the second part)

Well they're pieces, not songs (I know it sounds pretentious but music teachers will yell at you xD) and in addition that was published by Nintendo and this has a different publisher.

That site also has as a sample a page of the diabolical box theme, so you can play that and see how you like it. I would imagine they'd have to be decent arrangements.

"LAYTON 7 is a puzzle game for the new generation that follows in the footsteps of the PROFESSOR LAYTON series, which has now shipped over 15 million units worldwide. Players take on various character roles; you may be a taxi driver, a young boy, a dog, a fine lady, a philanthropist, an elderly man, or even a zombie. The player will earn points as they fulfill a given role. But, what is the role of these characters? And what is the greater meaning of these roles to begin with? The latest title in the LAYTON series is shrouded in mystery and is about to begin! The game is being developed for Nintendo 3DS and iOS / Android devices as part of our UNIPLAY line-up. Release date has yet to be determined."

Meh... I'm not as excited as I imagined. New Layton games are not a big announcement for me anymore. Still, I'm eager to see what they will do with the series after the two trilogies.

It'll probably be more like Mystery Room :P but hey it's bound to at least be good if not as good as the first seven games.

Last Specter had a gorgeous ending. Not quite Diabolical Box or Unwound Future, but better than Curious Village, and I thought that it was justified because it was the first game in the trilogy and they put a ton of effort into the puzzles and London Life. I'm impressed.

Jean Descole seems really interesting, curious to find out what his connection to Layton is.

Although to be honest I think Grosky is going to end up being my favorite prequel trilogy character XD

Okay, so next semester in my video productions class, I've decided that I'm going to make a Professor Layton film, with me being the  Professor, and a freshman being Luke (he'll do just fine for the part, I'm honestly more worried about the costume than casting), but I'm having a hard time thinking of a cool plot to work with as we are a little restricted with shooting locations and props.  Since we're really only allowed to shoot at school, do any of you have some cool suggestions of plots that I could elaborate into a short film? If it goes well, I'll post it here on the thread.

Thank you!!

Ahaha thanks Clanker, but some of those are a bit...extreme for what I had in mind.

Instead, I've come up with a basic plot summary. Tell me What you think, and if you have any suggestions following this basic outline, go ahead and shoot me a pm or just post below. Considering the Professor Layton series as a whole, almost nothing is out of the question plot wise, it's probability wise (considering it's for school, so nothing too extreme like Mobile Fortresses or anything) that is where my concern lies.

"Professor Layton has come to America to visit his apprentice, Luke Triton, for Christmas, however something is afoot in Luke's new boarding school. Teachers have gone missing, students are acting strangely, and Luke's substitute teacher is a bit...eccentric. When a sudden snowstorm puts the school into lockdown, and rumors of a magical snow stone spread, can Luke and the Professor get to the bottom of this mystery before they're out in the snowbank?"

Thanks again, and I hope this becomes reality next semester!

EDIT: Whoops, I forgot to post the plot summary!

I have it preordered so I most likely won't get it until next week, and even so I'm probably going to wait to play it until I've played Danganronpa 2 (I have a friend who is just absolutely adamant about talking about it with me).

Heh well there are six other layton games and six other ace attorney games so you've got a lot of content ahead of you xD even though you've played some of the Layton ones I think

Edit: also wow that puzzle theme is nice. Sounds a bit like a mix of the puzzle themes from Miracle Mask and Azran Legacy

I have it preordered so I most likely won't get it until next week, and even so I'm probably going to wait to play it until I've played Danganronpa 2 (I have a friend who is just absolutely adamant about talking about it with me).

This game looks sweet though! I can't wait to play it!

I gotta wait until Monday to play my copy... we're down the shore this weekend, so sadly I can't get it tomorrow.

Actually I replayed it letting the text just play out. It feels like it works so much better and it was so entertaining I didn't mind playing it twice xD

I actually hate speeding up text in any game, even Pokémon. Just a pet peeve.

Title: Re: Professor Layton
Post by: SlowPokemon on September 13, 2014, 04:19:38 PM
Well, my motto is always to start from the beginning (Professor Layton and the Curious Village for DS), but it's true that you won't really miss anything if you start with the 3DS games. The two 3DS Professor Layton games are the 5th game (Miracle Mask) and the 6th game (Azran Legacy), and I'd recommend getting Miracle Mask if you'd like to try it out. Azran Legacy is good too but if you haven't played Miracle Mask you likely won't understand a large part of the story.

The other option is to get Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney, since you know you like Ace Attorney and that can at least introduce you to the Layton style to see if you like it. That one's also $10 cheaper than the others.

As far as is the series good, I mean it's my personal favorite video game series. I can't say that they'd be good for everyone (Olimar12345 played the first game and hated it), but the entire series has stood the test of time for me and I've played them all several times.

Title: Re: Professor Layton
Post by: SlowPokemon on September 13, 2014, 04:32:24 PM
Hmm, I don't think so? I'm not sure.

As far as what the series is, though, they all follow some sort of simple formula: Layton gets a letter from an old acquaintance, he goes with his apprentice Luke (and depending on the game, his assistant Emmy) to visit the town this acquaintance lives in, and proceeds to work to solve all the mysteries the town holds. There are also a lot of random NPCs milling around that will throw puzzles at you, which can be anything from a maze to navigate to a math problem to a logic problem.

The stories are usually really entertaining even though the endings are always totally out of left field and usually completely unguessable. Oh, also, you know those anime cutscenes that they use every so often in Dual Destinies? Layton did that first, and they're about twice as frequent as they are in Dual Destinies.

If you like puzzle games, I don't think there's a better one than this just because it offers so much variety.

Really goooooooooood~

It might be best to start with the chronological order, because the more modern and detailed 3DS games are really alluring and easier to acquire imo, and if you decide that you like the series, you could continue on to the DS era. Downside of this is that you have to play at least 5 other games until you get to Unwound Future, which has probably one of the most interesting and heart-crushing stories.
Professor Layton and the Last Specter (DS, you should watch Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva) after that, it's a nice movie!)
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask (3DS)
Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy (3DS)
Professor Layton and the Curious Village (DS)
Professor Layton and Pandora's Box/the Diabolical Box (DS)
Professor Layton and the Unwound Future (DS)

PLvsAA goes between Curious Village/Diabolical Box or Diabolical Box/Unwound Future, not sure. But it's still playable imo at any point as it's a spin-off.
Title: Re: Professor Layton
Post by: SlowPokemon on September 14, 2014, 05:04:43 AM
Honestly just play them whatever order you want as long as Miracle Mask comes before Azran Legacy. I'd still recommend starting with the oldest game if you can but it's not something to get worked up about.

Also waddle Last Specter is definitely DS not 3DS.

Spoiler
I felt like Layton got completely shafted at the end, I know Henry and Angela had much importance to Randall, and it was more focused on them, but Layton shared the burden of all that trauma for years and never got to come to terms with it I felt like? If he and Randall had more a meaningful reunion in the end I might have cried...

truuuue okay I feel that but
Spoiler
When you realize that the game isn't about Layton and Randall as much as it is Henry and Randall then the game becomes so much more beautiful. We have this tendency to put layton and the center of everything because he's the protag, but it was actually Henry's reunion with Randall that got me to cry. And interestingly that's the only game of the series that makes me cry every time I play it.

I bought it on release day, and I have a weirdly specific memory of playing it for the first time. True well I guess we'll find out on April 7 in any case. Since we haven't heard anything on Layton 7 since its announcement, I'm inclined to believe/hope that the game they're announcing may be different? Because of course I'd be clamoring for another trilogy most of all. I kind of doubt it though; I don't really see them going anywhere after Unwound Future in the timeline and they wrote themselves into a corner as far as doing anything prior to Last Specter. I have a track record of being wrong about game announcements though so we'll see.

It is. They announced this back in 2013, but they stated at the time that it wasn't going to feature the professor (Azran Legacy was confirmed as his last adventure). The thing I'm surprised about is that at the time they announced it for smart phones as well as 3DS, but I guess they gave up on the 3DS? Which is odd.

Nah the card thing is only one aspect of the game. This constant "different is bad and wrong" attitude from everyone in the gaming community is really gross how are you supposed to know this game is bad before you've even played it or seen more than a screenshot?

Quote from: SlowPokemon on April 07, 2015, 11:27:57 PMNah the card thing is only one aspect of the game. It is a Layton game it is literally called Layton 7 and just because it isn't exactly the same formula or even similar doesn't mean it's not a Layton game?? This constant "different is bad and wrong" attitude from everyone in the gaming community is really gross how are you supposed to know this game is bad before you've even played it or seen more than a screenshot?

They're not "sticking names" on anything. This is developed by the same team that produced the original Professor Layton games. They're just doing something different with the series after they officially ended the old style of Layton games with Azran Legacy.

Why are you trying to argue is the real question you've never even played a layton game why do you care what they're giving us in the future if you don't even play what's already there

It's called Layton 7.

All I can think of is Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.
It may have been a decent game, but the branding killed it.

True I would be way more excited about another classic type of game, but I don't like shunning things from one of my favorite game developers before I even try them. All of Level-5's titles I've played are really good. And Olimar you don't even like layton lmao

Oh, so that's what you meant. Well, I never said I really cared about any new iterations of the game, I was just commenting on their "sell-out" kind of idea for their new one. I wouldn't get it either way, but I can see why people who appreciate these games would not be enthusiastic about this change.

If there's effort put into the plot of the game I won't have a problem with it. But if it's some stupid card game with Layton slapped on it for no reason other than for marketing, I probably won't get it.

Yeah, if the card thing is the only aspect of it I'll be a little disappointed. Ive never seen card games as a type of puzzle since they rely heavily on chance

I'm hoping that this at least shows that they're becoming a little more interested in apps...like maybe they'll actually fix the Layton Bros crashing bug?

I finished replaying Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and as I've completed the game twice now I really feel like writing up a long analysis of what's good and bad about it. Kinda like a review, but maybe with spoilers. Is that something anyone would be interested in reading? Idk if that'll affect whether I write it, but I'll be more likely to if someone would like something like that.

I played the ending of Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box tonight (I replayed most of the game over the summer but stopped at the very end for some reason) and I always tell myself I'm not going to cry, but for some reason, even though I've played it countless times before, even though I've been distanced from the story for well over two months, even though it's really not that sad to begin with, tonight I absolutely lost it and was just crying over the end of this game.

Spoiler
For some reason I'm always absolutely fine through everything until Sophia's letter to Anton--and then something about the way it's worded just gets me a little choked up, and by the time the credits are rolling I'm always crying. I really don't get it.

Title: Re: Professor Layton
Post by: SlowPokemon on October 03, 2015, 10:35:24 PM
That's the thing, Diabolical Box always makes me cry no matter how many times I've played it, while Unwound Future's ending made me cry the first few times I played it but doesn't so much anymore. The main reason I like the ending of Unwound Future (and Azran Legacy) is because it presents Layton as more of a human, flawed character, rather than the stoic near-perfect gentleman he's usually portrayed as.

Tbh though the one with the most tear-worthy ending, and one I can't remember getting through without crying, is Miracle Mask.

http://twinfinite.net/2015/12/level-5-has-a-sequel-to-a-very-popular-series-to-announce-in-2016/

The successor to the Professor Layton series, perhaps...? The phrase "sequel to a series" implies that it's an entire new series, not a new entry in an existing one. At least, that's my interpretation. It'd be nice to get some news about Professor Layton, since the way things look currently it's completely dead. Layton 7 hasn't gone over well with crowds so far, so they may be trying a more direct sequel to the series.

I already know how most Layton games end even though I've never beaten one. I've been playing Lost/Unwound Future recently - do you think I'll still cry?

Speaking of which, that game's Japanese title, The Last Time Travel, doesn't really make grammatical sense. Is it an awkwardly literal translation?

To answer your questions, I actually consider Unwound Future to be the weakest Professor Layton game by a pretty big margin. The pacing is all wrong and it has long stretches in the middle where not much is happening--also, the really awesome immersive atmosphere of the other games from St. Mystere, Folsense, Misthallery, and the others just isn't present in Future London. At least, it's not for me. I'm not sure which one I'd rank as the best, but I'd definitely put Unwound Future at the bottom.

Maybe you could write a plot analysis? I don't know why, but sometimes I like looking at criticisms for things I like, provided that the criticism is reasonable (I've seen people call Spirit Tracks an "abomination" in earnest), and said thing isn't the legendary lowest-ranked platformer.

What's your favorite minigame in the Professor's Trunk? I skipped over Curious Village because one of them is just collecting gizmos, the second is just putting a single puzzle together, and the last is trying to decorate the inn rooms to the protagonists' likings--none of which are really any fun. Diabolical Box is where the minigames started to become more fun or at least require more thought, and my personal favorite (and possibly my favorite of the entire series) is the Tea Set. I can't think of anything more Professor Layton than collecting tea ingredients, brewing different blends of tea, and then serving them to people who are stressed out or sick.

The reason I love this game is the same reason I enjoy the Dress Up game from Azran Legacy--it's rooted in character and charm. This gives you an appreciated chance to learn a little bit about the NPCs (Diabolical Box features 36 different requests, no less) and interact with them more than the game would allow you to normally. The early Laytons are especially notorious for having tons of NPCs who only ever give you one puzzle or a couple lines of dialogue.

However, I expect the Hamster game will be more popular as it is the one that really caught my attention when I first played the game, and it's a tad more interactive as you have to figure out a potential layout that will allow the hamster to travel a lot of steps. I don't really expect the Camera game and its subtle "spot the difference" puzzles to be really popular.

What do you guys think?

I was thinking about Professor Layton earlier on today, and how it's considered one of the best series on DS even though it's for "casuals". Then it hit me - Nintendo had lost most of their third-party support in the fifth generation, and appealing to casual gamers got it back. Not to mention, since the DS was a handheld, it gave them more room to experiment without burning down the internet.

I've 100%ed Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy. I was going to wait for the 3DS version, but it's coming out in October (aka the month that everything else I want is coming out). So I'll still get that version, but for now I've finished it on iOS after about 36 hours.

I'll write up a review, but more importantly, is anyone else playing? Have any thoughts?

The Nintendo 3DS version of Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy (launching October 6) will be playable only in 2D. I know I'm in the minority as someone who actually enjoys and uses the 3D feature, but I'm still heavily disappointed about this. The other Layton games used it SO WELL, and this means that one of my main reasons for purchasing both versions is now gone.

Not to mention, between Pokémon, Hey! Pikmin, and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions (and the release of the New Nintendo 2DS XL), it kind of feels like Nintendo are completely abandoning this feature and disappointing fans like me who actually love it. Idk does anyone else care about this?
