Title: The Prayer Topic
Post by: TheZeldaPianist275 on November 21, 2012, 08:41:58 AM
So I'm a Christian.  Don't know how many other people on here are or at least believe in a higher deity, but for those of you who do, this is the place to post prayer requests.  I firmly believe that prayer is the only way for humans to speak with God and intercede for others.  If anyone thinks this is a dumb idea, don't bother to post and tell me so.

Basically post any prayer requests you might have here and presto!  You got me and anybody else who checks this topic praying for you.  Simple.

This thread is not a place where you may disrespect others' beliefs. Inappropriate comments are not welcome here, as prayer requests are a thing many people take very seriously. A violation of this rule may result in a ban.

*hem hem* I know that you had good intentions with this topic, but it seems that religion is a very...touchy topic. I'm not bashing on religion or anything, but I'm not so sure it's a good idea to post about it. Religion's started wars before, so naturally you could imagine it at least hurting someone's feelings on a forum.

We already have Religion topic. This should be allowed.

Quote-Calm debates on politics, religion, etc will be tolerated, but if things get out of hand then consequences will follow

Well, sorry about that then. I would ask for a prayer for my great uncle, but I'm not Christian.

I am aware of this.  If you look at Kefka's rules (http://www.ninsheetm.us/smf/index.php?topic=3659.0), though, it says that discussion on religion is fine unless it gets out of hand.  And if someone's feelings get hurt just by mention of prayer, then that's really their problem.

Pfff, ninja'd already.

EDIT: @ Bonus, you don't necessarily have to be a Christian to ask for prayer.  May I ask about your great-uncle?

My great-uncle doesn't accepts prayers from religion outside his own, even though I don't understand why. I guess it's just the way he was raised. Sorry if my post offended you in any way (which would be odd since I made the post to prevent people from getting offended). I thought we weren't permitted to talk about religion.

How about, so homophobes don't start being all gaaaaaaaaaaaay about the issue, we extend the prayer to end all discrimination against people of all colors, creeds, and preferences on who they'd like to sleep with... in Ohio. And everywhere else too. Except Washington, where I can have marital sex with a dude while hittin up dat legal marijuana. Discrimination=Defeated.

God bless Peter, God bless John,
God bless the bed that I lie on.
God bless Mum and Dad and everyone

Hey guys.

My grandpa fell last Thursday and broke his hip. He's 81, has dementia, Parkinson's, and we were pretty sure he wasn't going to make it through surgery. He did.

I can't explain anymore because I don't know the right words or where to put them, but basically he's going. They don't think he'll make it through the weekend. I kinda wish he passed in the surgery.

I don't want prayers for him to get better. It's no use. I want prayers for me and my family that we'll be okay through this whole process. We've already been through so much, but I'm tired and my family's weary from all the stress his illnesses. Don't let that sound like he's a bother, there's just been so much drama between doctors and nursing homes...we just want peace for him and for us.

I love all you guys, and I could really use some support at this time. Thanks guys.

That's a bit of a necrobump, but I'm sad to hear that. I know what you mean, with the little hope of recovery. A similar thing happened to my great uncle, who had problems because he insisted on living on his farm, despite his inability to farm it anymore and his need for assistance. So, as he got worse, my family hired a 24-hour nurse, despite my uncle's insistence. After a while, he fell and went to hospice for a week or two before his death. That was about 3-4 years ago. I'll be praying for you.  :)

MLF, you just trivialized the marital pursuits of another human being. You took his hopes and took the stance of "We can't all have what we want, you know!" Not that there are any good arguments against the legalization of gay marriage, but if there were, there is no way that this would be considered one of them. I do not believe that you wanted to argue, nor do I intend to. But you have to understand the ABSURDLY CONFLICT-ORIENTED NATURE of what you say. If you do, in fact, want me to "take a chill pill", you need to (pardon my french, I've yet to find one of these miraculous pills of which you speak) watch what you fucking say, or else by your logic, I am allowed to go on anti-religious tirades, with the expectation that you will not do so much as bat an eye in response. Understood?

What you said was blatantly bashing another's lifestyle. It would be no different if I said "Christians shouldn't be allowed to get married because according to my beliefs Christianity is unholy." There is absolutely no difference there and I don't think you would handle it as well as we are if we all started pointing out the problems of organized religion.

So please, stop posting things that blatantly bash the way other people live their life, especially when their way of life doesn't cause you any negative effects at all. No one will benefit from such comments. Not to mention the fact that sexuality in particular is not something anyone can control in the first place--believe me.

mlf, the best way to avoid offending other people is by avoiding arguments about personal matters. Once someone knows your opinion, there is no reason to bring it up again at the slightest notice. There may be a time and place for debating those things. But it is not here, and not now. If you must argue with someone about sexuality, please do it when you are both coming from the same place. You are basing your beliefs on your religion. That is not wrong. It is wrong when you expect people to take what you have faith in and call it a valid source, when someone else does not have a similar faith.

tl;dr: Stop.

Hi Guys!
I just needed to tell someone this. I would like to request prayer for.....honestly....myself.
As you all know, I'm a Christian and I go to church regularly on Sunday Mornings. Well, this girl at our church who is also 17 and I've known for all my life have always been stuck in the "Hi how are you doing" zone.
I've been trying to be her close friend for like 3 years now. Well, today at church, she brought her new "boyfriend" to church! For me it was the last straw. I've been trying to earn her friendship for 3 years and what does she do?? Bring a boyfriend to church out of the blue. It just......really hit me hard. I literally don't have any friends except you guys of course. I've wanted to be her friend for SO long but......
Our church is really small. She's like the only girl my age there.

Please pray for me. I'm just so......angry, frustrated, depressed, sad............lonely.  :(

Thanks for listening all! :)

I mean like
Sounds like you want to be more than friends
In which case I'm gonna recycle some advice:
Quote from: FierceDeity on January 05, 2015, 03:33:51 PMWhile I'm not saying that you shouldn't go for anything, high school relationships are pretty overrated, imo. Looking back on mine and many others', there are a rare few that I'd consider to be "healthy relationships". Everybody's still maturing and figuring themselves out as people, and hormones are abound. Sure, a little experience is healthy, but it's by no means necessary. My brother, due to no lack of charisma or sex appeal (seriously he's so much cooler than I am it's not even fair), didn't have any relationships until his sophomore year of college. Now, he's been in a happy relationship with a great girl for about 3 years, and they are quite possibly my favorite couple in existence. Again, enjoy your years of free education, and try not to stress out too much about these things that you'll likely find inconsequential when you look back on them later.

If I'm somehow misinterpreting and you're not actually romantically interested in her, then I don't really see the problem :/
Unless the guy's a douche, I can't see why this would prevent you from being friends with her

And if you are romantically interested in her, then admittedly that does suck, but you can't really blame her for it. Can't really blame anyone for it. If you haven't openly expressed interest (and now that she has a boyfriend you really shouldn't), then she has no reason to believe this would hurt you. And even if you have, I mean, she's allowed to make her own decisions.

Again, you're too young to be worrying about this shit. Hell, I'm too young to be worrying about this shit. If it's not happening naturally at this point, there's nothing wrong with that. All in due time.

Back on the friends front, though, idk if a church with one other person your age is exactly the right place to look. You play cello; get involved with some local orchestras, if you haven't already. If you have, get more involved. A love of music and video games is largely what brings people together on this forum; with people in orchestra, you're sure to find people with at least a love for music. Introduce yourself. Put yourself out there. You have virtually nothing to lose, so just go for it. If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out, but you won't know whether you'd be friends with somebody until you try.

With all due respect, no one can illegitimatize the points one wants to make with one's well-wishing!! If something is legitimate or illegitimate, no one can change that point. Anything you say already is either legitimate or illegitimate, and nothing someone else has to say about it can change it.

You're being needlessly condescending about this though. People can have their viewpoints about prayers and no one can make your prayers or belief about prayers more or less valid, it's about subjective faith anyway. However, this all goes for the people you think are "trying to illegitimatize" your own prayers too.

Outside of that, there's the matter of good taste of what to say in a public forum. Reasonable satire(in the sense of criticism) should be all right, but it's when things go past that, when the problems start to emerge.

Quote from: FireArrow on February 04, 2016, 07:02:01 PMWell I'm making fun of alternative medicine not cancer... either way people only get butthurt about things that directly relate to them.

The standard "don't be a dick" rule applies here.  Yes, you can have your satire and amuse yourself about the merits of prayer, but have some common sense about the boundaries between what is acceptable and what is not.

I think ruto is the only person who's actually doing this, and that's just ruto being ruto tbh. Iirc, everyone got their panties in a knot because people attacked and misunderstood dude's post, not because people don't approve of prayer.

Quote from: Waddle Bro on February 07, 2016, 05:33:04 AMEmpathy though?

I'm just a bitter person I guess. People in my experience seem more interested in legitimizing the way they act instead of trying to change their behavior, or at best they just stay out of it without truly supporting either side.

E. Gadd's sermon on the discussed (and undiscussed) issues
If you guys haven't already found out, I'm a Christian, but I'm not a stereotypical Christian. I believe that the Big Bang happened, but I don't necessarily credit that to the big bang theory (not the show). I also believe that evolution is a thing (But imo, anyone who doesn't believe that is someone who wants attention), but I don't believe in evil-lution, and would prefer it that my ancestors weren't called monkeys. But all that aside (I know this is derailing the topic to a degree, but I figured it ties to what I'm about to say), concerning the homosexual discussion held, my best friend is gay. Now, does that mean that I approve of his lifestyle? No. But I don't hound on him for it! In God's eyes, sin is sin is sin, and so what I don't understand is why so many people are SOOOO against LGBTs when they are committing sins just the same (well, maybe not the SAME, but you understand what I mean). God loves the sinner, but hates the sin, and if you're (this term is used generally) a true Christian, you want to be like God, which includes loving the sinner and hating the sin.

Hey sorry to stop all of this amazing conversation, but I have a prayer request:
It seems very likely that I'll be moving to another state in the near future because of a job, and I would appreciate if some of you could pray for a smooth transition. Especially since it'll be near the end of the school year, I feel it could get a little awkward for me.

Well, it's the right thing. There seems to be one thing lacking from most belief systems these days, or at least, the followers don't exhibit them: morals. And you're welcome. :)

You have my prayers. I hope your transition (if one is made) is done without friction or bumps in the road!

Quote from: E. Gadd Industries on February 07, 2016, 12:12:26 PMGod loves the sinner, but hates the sin, and if you're (this term is used generally) a true Christian, you want to be like God, which includes loving the sinner and hating the sin.

By homosexuality, do you mean sex or the love? Not to start anything on your post, because I'm 100% behind your sentiment. I'm just a bit curious because a problem for a lot of us LGBT people is that our love is often considered fake or less significant than straight love. Calling it a lifestyle is almost a misnomer if hating the sin and loving the sinner equates with loving your friend but hating their feelings for someone they love. It's an important part of who they are - you can't love a black person but hate that they're black. If you're just saying you think the lust part of it is sinful then disregard everything I said (well, lust is a sin in the first place so yeh...)

Haha "loving the sinner but hating the sin" is tolerance at best, as I think we've discussed elsewhere here. Tolerance =/= acceptance, though it is a step in the right direction.

Also, I'm sorry to hear that Braix. If you wanna talk you can always shoot me a PM or FB message and I'll do my best to help you out!

Just a friendly reminder that this isn't the place for religious, current events, or philosophical discussions; regardless if this is tangentially related to any of the above. If you wish to talk about those things, there are other places to do so; this thread is a place to ask for support, nothing more.

Sorry for bumping an extremely old topic, but I'd like to mention that today was the national day of prayer. My church had a time of prayer and it really helped me. I'm not asking for prayers, I just really wanted to say that this time of prayer helped me a lot.  :)

Keep the families of the kids that were shot at the school in your prayers. Must be extremely hard to lose a child at that age...at any age really.

So my mom's cancer scans got some results, there is a suspicious nodule in her thyroid bed which was there last year but is now more pronounced. If it is cancerous they will likely do alcohol oblation. They did a biopsy on it and the results are supposed to come back today. She had thyroid cancer so they had to remove her thyroid, and them give her radioactive iodine. That was a year or two ago. She has done good since. Just pray that everything works out well.
