Poll
Question: Which legendary bird Pokémon is your favorite?
Option 1: Articuno
Option 2: Zapdos
Option 3: Moltres
Title: Pokémon Red, Blue, & Yellow
Post by: SlowPokemon on January 31, 2016, 09:08:48 AM
Get hyped! We've only got about four weeks before the original Pokémon games are released on the eShop. Amazon's download code listings confirm that they'll each retail for $9.99, a bit pricier than the average Virtual Console title.

Anyway, answer the poll and post your reasons here! Personally, I'm having a tough time deciding which one to buy. Blue is the one I grew up with and it would have the best nostalgia value, but I've never played Yellow before! So I'm very conflicted. Any advice?

I'll try to update the poll every few days or so if enough people start playing these and are interested in talking about the games leading up to release.

Ninja'd, I think you should buy Yellow too! I think it's worth it since you never played it, and it's slightly different than red/blue

As for me, I don't have any friends to play this with locally so there's no point in buying it

I have Yellow and Blue carts for my GBASP that are still functioning so I think I'mma just take Red. If I ever seriously feel the need to have Yellow available whenever I want then I might get it, but it's just Red for the moment. (Also I'm running low on space on my 3DS after downloading Ace Attorney Trilogy, Dual Destinies, and Super Mystery Dungeon digitally oops) I'm also gonna try to get a living Pokédex going, somehow - I completed the dex in Platinum and Omega Ruby, this would be easy shit in comparison!

Yellow is just so much of an upgrade over Red and Blue that I don't see a purpose of getting either
in fact I don't see a purpose of getting them anyway since I have all of them sitting right next to me (plus an extra copy of blue)
I mean I was pretty sure everyone already had these games

Despite being a big Pokemon fan, I think I might probably skip this bandwagon. I didn't grow up with the Gen I games (or at least, the ones on GameBoy), so they don't really mean all that much to me. If I had to choose one though, I'd probably go with Yellow. Colored graphics and all three starters? Sign me up!

Yellow! I never played any of the Gen 1 pokemon games, i sure qould love to play yellow, given the fact that you can find all three starters in the game!

Oh cool! Pokemon Red was one of the first Game Boy games I ever played (although not my favorite GB game, that spot will always belong to Crystal), but I've always wanted to play Yellow!
I've actually been playing Red at school on my graphing calculator...there's this thing that converts GB ROMs into playable calculator apps for the TI-83/84. It's kinda slow and calculator graphics aren't exactly top-notch lol but it works

Either Blue or Yellow - Blue was my first game, but I like Yellow because of special Pikachu edition.

I was thinking this too! Not necessarily the best gen part, but even thinking about playing the original Gold or Silver again after so many years actually makes my heart beat faster.

Still, Yellow will hold me over for a while! And honestly there's a good chance I'll buy Blue as well if I end up catching Poké fever.

If I got Blue, I'd want to recreate my original team as much as possible, but I only really remember... Blastoise, Pidgeot and maybe Butterfree? I just do not remember anything at all.

After getting all three, I plan to play blue first as a nostalgic run, then yellow since it had a slightly different storyline, then finish up with the nuzlock red run.

I'm going with Yellow, since that one has never been revisited in any way, shape or form before now, it's less buggy than R/B, the Pokemon look like Pokemon, and it's a GBC game. Would rather have Crystal (As I never played it before) but I'll happily take Yellow.
Title: Re: Pokémon Red, Blue, & Yellow
Post by: Magic Mole on February 01, 2016, 05:06:59 PM
^ OMG dude you need to get your hands on Crystal. One of my favorite games of all time. Will forever be my favorite Pokemon game. If I tried to explain why it would become a huge write-up so I think I'll pass on that.
But since this is a RBY topic, is Yellow really that different from Red and Blue? Is it sort of like Crystal vs. Gold and Silver? Really looking forward to playing it either way.
Title: Re: Pokémon Red, Blue, & Yellow
Post by: Nebbles on February 01, 2016, 05:10:36 PM
The main differences are that you start with Pikachu, you can get all three starters, there's a slight graphics update to the front sprites for the Pokemon... and I think a few version exclusives are trained. Those are about the main differences I remember, minus Jessie and James making cameos.

Out of the fifteen people who voted in the poll, here were the results:

Three are downloading only Pokémon Red.
One is downloading only Pokémon Blue.
Four are downloading only Pokémon Yellow.
Three are downloading all three games.
Four aren't downloading any of them.

Next up--which starter will you be choosing? If you're getting multiple games, then choose the starter that your "main game" will have.

I don't know that I've ever beaten a gen 1 game (original or remakes) with a Bulbasaur. I have used Charmander and Squirtle (and Pikachu) though, so Bulbasaur it is.

Ughhh Mega/Giga Drain is SOO handy and Charizard is Charizard, but I might have to pick Squirtle since I've never really played with him before (in Red/Blue at least). In Yellow I'd go with Pikachu since that's an option exclusive to Yellow. It wouldn't feel right to play Yellow my first time WITHOUT choosing Pikachu, ya feel me

And the results are in! Of the eleven people who voted, only one had the heart to choose Charmander. Tied for second place were Bulbasaur and Pikachu, with three votes apiece, and Squirtle taking first with four votes.

Post by: SlowPokemon on February 09, 2016, 09:56:12 PM
Yeah, I can't believe how hyped I am for this. I mean, technically speaking, these are the least advanced Pokémon games, and there's definitely a lot about Pokémon as a game that improves with every new title. But something tells me this will still be a fun experience.

TBH, I just hope I know someone who gets a different game so that I can trade. It'd be a huge bummer if I can't complete the Pokédex.

Title: Re: Pokémon Red, Blue, & Yellow
Post by: SlowPokemon on February 09, 2016, 10:04:20 PM
Oh, that's right, Blue was your first-ever game! That is exciting. I kind of already got that super nostalgia blast when I played Omega Ruby, but it'll still be fun. Ruby and Silver are the most nostalgic for me, but I played both Blue and LeafGreen more times than I can count (and it's been a while since I've done so).

I AM bummed that you can't find Meowth in Yellow. But I guess I'll get over it since I can use all three starter Pokémon if I want to.

Speaking of which, I think it'd be fun to mimic Red's team from HeartGold and SoulSilver--that would be what, Pikachu, Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Snorlax, and Lapras? I might end up replacing Snorlax with Jigglypuff and Lapras with Alakazam or another Psychic-type Pokémon, though.
Title: Re: Pokémon Red, Blue, & Yellow
Post by: Nebbles on February 09, 2016, 10:08:15 PM
I think my team might be Blastoise, Pidgeot, Butterfree, Dugtrio, Clefable and Jolteon? Those were favorites I used a lot as a kid, from what little I remember, so it'll be fun.

I can't wait, tbh. I need to get the eShop money.

Good job folks, superior ice Bird FTW

But in all seriousness, I'll probably pick up Yellow, beat Misty, and then rush to Fuschia, beat Erika and Koga and then go to capture my waifu OP Articuno.

That being said Yellow is a bit more difficult than RB, so beating Koga may be easier said than done...

Really? I've always found Yellow a little easier because, even though the early game is pretty difficult (up until Lt. Surge with the exception of Misty, probably), you can switch between all three of the regular starters at will- assuming you train them all, of course. Koga especially, because the only threat he really has is Venomoth (or... nothing, if you have a Charizard by that point; whereas, by that same point in Red/Blue, you probably wouldn't have anything super effective against only Poison-type).

EDIT: To be fair, the first time I played through Yellow (when I was really young), I only trained Pikachu and Charizard, so Blaine was difficult, and Giovanni was next to impossible. I finally was able to beat him after raising my Blastoise to around Level 40-or-so and after chipping away at him with my other Pokemon. Lesson learned, needless to say!

You actually managed to catch Missingno without the game imploding?? A better question would be: Nintendo left it in the game in this version??

Just make it an honorary Pokemon.

catching missingno is one of the easiest glitches to pull off.  The more you do it the less likely the game is to crash

Missingno doesnt pose any threat to the game on its own lol unless you like your hall of fame

iirc it was a rumor spread by Nintendo power to get people to stop glitching

I feel like I'm ten years old again....
Title: Re: Pokémon Red, Blue, & Yellow

I feel. For some reason, whenever a new Pokémon game comes out I feel like I'm literally eight years old again. Other games I played in my youth, like Mario and Animal Crossing and whatnot, I still get the new entries in the series, but I enjoy them as an adult. Pokémon literally transports me back to when I was seven or eight years old and played Pokémon for the first time. That's probably some of the reason I love it so much.

Yellow Version (currently on the SS Anne):

Pikachu lv. 23
Pidgeotto lv. 23
Butterfree lv. 14
Ivysaur lv. 18
Charmeleon lv. 18
<random spot to be filled in by Squirtle>

I have Wartortle, Clefairy, Pidgeotto and Buttefree.

I'm laughing so hard because our teams are so similar.

Location: entrance of Mt. Moon
Pikachu Lv14
Birdly (Pidgey) Lv13
Kitty (Butterfree) Lv13

I'm going to get Jigglypuff (who apparently isn't available until Route 5 in Yellow!) and the three starters (I'll probably get rid of Butterfree or Pidgey)

Gonna get Diglett soon, then Eevee and make it a Jolteon, and I'll have my team.

Hey quick question, while everyone's playing through the games, can I get a check on these fanfare names?

http://www.ninsheetmusic.org/download/pdf/2531 (http://www.ninsheetmusic.org/download/pdf/2531)

When doing this sheet I went off the FR/LG soundtrack names, but I realize when I started playing Yellow again today that a couple may have been used for different purposes.

The fourth one seems wrong for sure. Go check a LP and see.

Actually those are all just about right from what I can tell. The Gen I fanfares don't line up with the other games.

I've got about 18 hours on the game so far. I can't put it down. I'm at the top of Pokémon Tower (just beat the Rocket group) and I finally found a Cubone haha.

Chuunibyou (Pikachu) Lv32
Flower Boy (Ivysaur) Lv29
LIZARDKING (Charmeleon) Lv29
New Shell (Wartortle) Lv29
Birdly (Pidgeotto) Lv29
Sleepy (Hypno) Lv29

I'm going to drop Birdly when it evolves (mainly using it for the Pokédex) and maybe Hypno too at some point. I want to use Omastar maybe? I may go back to my Kadabra if I find someone to trade with me so it can evolve. Using Gastly is also tempting even though I know Gengar sucks in Gen I. Idk

You can actually play the surfing Pikachu minigame in Virtual Console Pokémon Yellow! (In the original, you needed a special Surfing Pikachu from Stadium or an event.) It's so cute lol and I finally get to hear the Pikachu's beach track in-game...
