Title: The NSM Community Orchestra Project II!
Post by: MaestroUGC on September 18, 2013, 12:07:29 PM
So the first time around I tried too much with little desire to continue working with the material at hand. This time I'm choosing the series we'll be doing so that way I'll actually have a desire  to finish this within a year.

So what'll we be playing?

Super Mario Bros.

QuoteLet's get as many people we can muster to join together to perform a piece that will be a testament to both the website as well as the fantastic talent that comes through these doors. I'm not talking about us all learning one piece to play in unison, nor am I talking about some sort of medley that this site already organizes; I'm talking about a piece, a single arrangement or medley, in which we have 10, 15, 20 pianists each playing a part unique to them! And why stop there? We could even extend this to our other instrumentalists, make this one fantastic event in which we can all participate.

Granted, we'd need someone to arrange all of this, figure out some rehearsal times, and find a way to put this all of this, but I think we could get this done before school starts back up in August. I am aware that some of us will be in school during this period, including myself; but what's the point of music if not to try something ambitious.

Once again, if you are interested in playing this please sign up with whatever instruments you want to play with. I ask that if you signup you have a means of being able to record yourself, Video preferred, but audio at the very least.

I'll be taking suggestions for pieces you want to play later.

Don't suggest anything right now.

I'm going to already include some pieces that are standards for the series. I want to try and make this a total as possible and include at least one theme from the main platformer series. Music from the RPGs are welcome and expected. I'm going to avoid the sports games and other spinoffs with a few exceptions for Mario Party, Mario Kart, and and Non-Mario Games (Games under the Mario Series, but not starring Mario, e.g. Luigi's Mansion, Wario Land, etc.).

And my trombone.

I'll play violin and piano. We probably won't need vocals for this, but i sing bass. If you need any more low brass at the end of signups, i may be able to do euphonium. Getting the instrument from school may be a problem though

Trombone and Euphonium. Possibly piano, but I probably have horrible technique by now and it takes me quite a while to get things down. It'd be best to not put me down for piano unless you really needed another.

Again, I can do piano.

Ideally by the time you finish arranging I'll have learned banjo to a satisfactory degree as well. And maybe trumpet too. Who knows?
But don't put them on the list yet.

EDIT: Oh and I can also sing tenor if you really need it. I've never actually sang for an actual group before tho; just in church. :P So consider me a backup if need be.

There should be something like in the first movement of Vivaldi's Spring, where there's just three (in this case, four) violinists performing solos at the same time. If you know what I'm talking about.

Imo it would be more interesting to only use the instrumentation available here-kind of like personalizing the piece for the community of volunteers. Something outside the ordinary ensembles. (But reasonable-no 20 pianos d: )
Title: Re: The NSM Community Orchestra Project II!

I'm still going to feature every piano possible, that was the whole reason I started this in the first place. And yeah, I agree with you, and I'd like to keep it within the community, I was just seeing if people could play said instruments.

That being said, I'm going to keep accepting entries until I finalize set list. I'm going to then give a rough estimate of what instruments will be used in each piece.

Actually, my brother has a cello. He's self taught and not particularly fantastic, but he should be able to play some simple stuff if you need him to. No, I haven't talked to him about it yet.

I don't know any violists..

List of Stuff that will be in this:

Please note, due to the variety of games and sheer amount of stuff that "has to be in it", the final work will most likely be broken up into multiple parts or movements, depending on how it's organized. Only full themes will be listed, any motifs or other smaller pieces will not be given a specific arrangement. (e.g. Starman theme)

Platformers
Super Mario Bros.
-Overworld
-Underworld
-Underwater

Super Mario Bros. 2
-Overworld

Super Mario Bros. 3
-Overworld
-Athletic
-Airship

Super Mario World
-Athletic
-Castle

Super Mario World 2
-Athletic

Super Mario 64
-Secret Slide
-Final Bowser

Super Mario Sunshine

RPGs
Super Mario RPG
-Forest Maze
-Mushroom Kingdom
-Marrymore

Paper Mario
-Mario and Peach's Theme

Mario Kart Series
Super Mario Kart
-Rainbow Road

Mario Kart 64
-Rainbow Road

Mario Kart DS
-Waluigi Pinball

Spinoffs
Yoshi's Story
-Ending

Luigi's Mansion
-Main Theme

*May not make the final cut. It's acapella and requires at least two of each vocal part (SATB) and is just a remix of the Overworld Theme-SMB

May I suggest that we cut some songs? It seems very cliche to do some of these, and the list is already quite long.

Also, is this going to be like a medley, or a playlist?
Title: Re: The NSM Community Orchestra Project II!
Post by: MaestroUGC on September 28, 2013, 11:10:37 AM
You can suggest cutting whatever you wish. Just keep in mind the final set list will only have about 20 pieces. I will be making the final cuts, but my goal is to have at least one theme from each game in the main platformer series and a good representation from everything else.

I haven't decided how it's going to be done yet, so just be patient and suggest away.

Good Egg and Gusty Garden? Awesome choices. :D

You should add Mushroom City from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (I'd get a video link right now if I could, but I'm on my phone away from home...)
Title: Re: The NSM Community Orchestra Project II!

"Final Battle" from Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
(it's commonly named among the most popular video game boss themes... not series exclusive)

"Fight Against Mario... No, Doopliss!" from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

I'd suggest cutting a couple of those overworld themes. Like Olimar said, they're way overdone. You can find videos of them anywhere. What if it was a compilation that focused less on the things that everyone knows, it picked out the gems from the lesser known games? And by lesser known, I mean just not as obvious as "Underwater" from SMB.
Title: Re: The NSM Community Orchestra Project II!
Post by: MaestroUGC on September 28, 2013, 01:39:55 PM
A lot of these are overdone, but so is Beethoven. But this isn't just some "random guy on youtube" thing we're doing here, I'm trying to do something much bigger, but if you want me to cut the "common" pieces I will.
Title: Re: The NSM Community Orchestra Project II!
Post by: MasterProX on September 28, 2013, 02:16:42 PM
Yeah, I'm kinda against including all those "common" pieces too. If you're gonna take votes on whether to include all of them or not, remember that I'm against having too many. (If that made sense.)

Title: Re: The NSM Community Orchestra Project II!
Post by: FierceDeity on September 29, 2013, 11:20:04 AM
I don't think we should really be trying explicitly to avoid things that might be "overused", because then we'd be going to the other extreme of only including things that people aren't as likely to recognize. The fact that we're including so many games is enough to avoid being too cliche, I think (although, you certainly didn't downsize this from the last one, haha).
Anyways, my two votes go to Nimbus Land from Super Mario RPG (I know we don't have flute, but the orchestration doesn't have to be identical) and Delfino Plaza from Super Mario Sunshine.
Title: Re: The NSM Community Orchestra Project II!
Post by: MaestroUGC on September 29, 2013, 11:38:51 AM

Title: Re: The NSM Community Orchestra Project II!
Post by: Olimar12345 on September 29, 2013, 12:15:07 PM
I just think there needs to be a good balance between new songs and standards. Imo, it would work better with less standards.

I would suggest that we cut these:

Super Mario Bros.
-Underworld
-Underwater

and mebe add this:

Super Princess Peach
-Gleam Glacier 1 (http://youtu.be/sEfKggF2aMU)

Incorporating the texture/tempo changes that occur in game when you change your emotions would be neat.

Alright, after giving it some thought, I have figured out how this will be organized.

For Full orchestra and [X] Pianos
A Multi-Movement Mario Masterpiece

I - The Sound of Adventure - Music mostly from the main series, primarily the main themes
II - Move, Think, Fight! - Music from the RPGs
III - A Tale of two Bros. - Music primarily from the spinoffs
IV - On your mark - Mario Kart, Mario Party, multi-player games, plus other racing/competitive themes from various games
V - Bowser's Castle - Castle (final-level) themes and final boss music

This is by no means a final representation, and I encourage more clever titles for the movements.

We need to have some sort of arrangement of Bowser's Theme from Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team: there's an arrangement in both, and there's a faster arrangement called "The Giant" that's used in Bowser's Inside Story.

There's one definite one you missed on that list of songs. My point is, this isn't a suggestion. You actually forgot this one cuz there's no way I can see anyone just not putting it on.

It doesn't necessarily need to be that one; could be a different version such as that heard in NSMBW.

I'm going with that as a secondary suggestion.

If by Zelda you mean Mario, then yes, there will be lots of Zelda. Entirely Zelda, actually.

IV - On your mark - Mario Kart, Mario Party, multi-player games, plus other racing/competitive themes from various games
V - Bowser's Castle - Castle (final-level) themes and final boss music

Sounds good to me.

If I had to guess, it's probably because that was a goddamn ridiculous amount of pianos XD I mean, for the instrumentation you were writing for, you handled it pretty well, but...yeah...

Title: Re: The NSM Community Orchestra Project II!
Post by: FierceDeity on October 05, 2013, 02:25:10 AM
Well I mean, so far there are significantly less piano players than there were last time (although I'm sure more will sign up), and of those 8 signed up, 6 play other instruments. I'd suggest first making sure that those people are truly proficient on those instruments, at least enough for the parts you plan to write, and then making those instruments the focus for those people. That kinda gets you out of the ridiculousness of...what was it last time, 19 pianos?

Title: Re: The NSM Community Orchestra Project II!

The only time all the pianist will be playing is the beginning and finale, with some parts playing in unison.

Tune one of said pianos playing in unison down an eighth tone or so and have another one (tuned to concert pitch) recorded a hair after the main one for a neat echo effect. :P

Ok so here's what I have so far, the list doesn't seem complete, but I want your input on it before I finalize it and start working. This is not the final order of the pieces.

I - The Sound of Adventure

SMB 3 - Overworld, All world themes
SMW - Athletic

NSMB - Overworld

II - Move, Think, Fight!
SMRPG - Forest Maze, Mushroom Kingdom, Regular Fight
Paper Mario - Mario and Peach's Theme
PM2 - Glitzville, X-Naut Moon Base
SPM - Count Bleck's Theme, Flipside/Flopside

III - A Tale of Two Bros.
Luigi's Mansion - Main Theme
Wario Land 4 - Toy Block Tower
Yoshi's Story - Main Theme
Dr. Mario - Fever, Chill
Donkey Kong - 25m

Title: Re: The NSM Community Orchestra Project II!
Post by: Olimar12345 on October 24, 2013, 02:19:04 PM
The third movement's theme seems rather ambiguous (when compared to the other four). Is it supposed to be just centered around spin-offs or something?

Also, for the MP1 music in the fourth movement, wouldn't it make more since to add something like "Faster than All", or something that fits well with the overall setting of that piece? The two you have don't really seem all that relevant.
Title: Re: The NSM Community Orchestra Project II!
Post by: MaestroUGC on October 24, 2013, 02:23:00 PM
-Yes, that's how I described it initially.
-So would you I rather move those to Mvt III, and substitute it with "Faster than All"?

I don't think I'd include anything from Superstar Saga or Partners in Time, not because the music is bad, but because the music in later games is better, not to mention that the later games' music seems to fit this project better. These are just my recommendations. And I'm not recommending you include ALL of these, but if I were to narrow down selections, I'd pick from these.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
-To a New Adventure! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5gkGKv4-gE) (Main Theme)
-They're Pretty Tough, Should We Be Careful!? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdaL0RZLIGs) (Boss Battle)
-Grasslands, All the Way (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUwPaoJO-l0)
-The Giant (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrxOjgpOnIQ) (Giant Bowser Battle)

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (I know that this is a big list, but they could all work well for different reasons, so it was hard to narrow down)
-Comedic Curtains (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKe8YCQKqX8)
-Bowser's Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl-PlcfTE6o)
-Welcome to Pi'illo Blimport (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAPo_elUOAs)
-Shopping in Wakeport (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B51z0JGf4Hw)
-The Law of Pajamaja (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_QCLz_bECc)
-Sacred Somnom Woods (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUmmCDyB0EI)
-Try, Try Again (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MN78i0nfqE8) (Battle)
-Never Let Up! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpn1x_OILHE) (Boss Battle)
-Size Up Your Enemy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCULfPd9ALw) (Giant Luigi Battle)
-The Final Antasma Battle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrAYVhPU-9g)

I'm stupid.

I just realized that the end credits from both Bowser's Inside Story are a medley of the main area themes from the game as well as the main themes--so it might be a good idea to only include the end credit suites from both games.

Traveling About on a Journey of Memories (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mx9Z0izL7No)
Pi'illo Vacation! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvTWTqH7_aI)

You can probably just disregard my previous post.

Like, even if you don't play it that often, goddamn it's such a great instrument.
Cuz I don't actually own it. It's rented.

Feels like I own it though; I've had the thing for six years. My younger brother plays it in his school band but he's graduating high school this year... so there won't be a need for it. I'm considering re-joining my university's symphonic band next year so maaaybe it'll get to stick around.

edit: omgomg movement 2 :D

I wonder which one will have the Vivaldi-spring-styled violin solos... I mean, you ARE including those, right? RIGHT? :P

There's going to be quite a few styles getting mixed in this, but I have plans for something like that.

Wow, there are a lot more songs than I was originally expecting. It's nice to see the addition of NSMB, but I had another thought: Would it be too much to add in one from SM3L?  Or maybe one from NSMBWiiU? Or even SMG2. One of those really new ones that can get to those who are new to the gaming world and (regretfully enough) don't know the classics.

I didn't realize I skipped SMG2, please contirbute some pieces, I'll pick a max of 3. Feel free to suggest one from SML3. The NSMB series really just remixes themes from the first game, so I think the one on the list is representative enough.

^Eh, the one for Wii U has a new theme, but idk if it's worth including.

As far as SMG2--
"Sky Station Galaxy" (also known as "Sky Island" or "Main Theme")
"Fluffy Bluff Galaxy" (also known as "Cloud Garden")
"Super Mario Galaxy 2" (end credits theme)

I think that the only one that's an absolute must from Galaxy 2 is Sky Station, as the motif appears in at least ten of the other tracks on the soundtrack.

I'm not late at all (like always). If you haven't finished up the lists or need a backup guy, hello!

Piano as my main-instrument, but I play (and got access to) instruments like flutes (ocarinas, recorder, tin flute), marimba (I only got access to a pretty small glockenspiel right now though), kazoo, electric guitar and a jaw harp (sort of, not much to play).
Don't expect too much from anything except for piano, but I'd say I'm good enough on the other instruments

EDIT: Had some issues with the flutes, they kinda blow atm. Too cold in my apartment apparently and I don't have any whiskey to fix 'em up with ^^

A SMG2 theme I love is Melty Monster Galaxy.  It's just so epic.

Ok, in reviewing what I have intendted vs. what I think would be the most feasible:

For those of you who signed on for multiple instruments, would you be more comfortable limiting them down to one or two, or should I go ahead and write for you a bajillion parts for each?
Title: Re: The NSM Community Orchestra Project II!
Post by: FierceDeity on November 26, 2013, 08:31:14 PM
I had honestly just assumed you would do that automatically. As long as everybody who signed up is playing on something that they signed up to play, I don't see why anyone has reason to complain.

I am loving this list. So much variety.

Also I... Have to drop my percussion instruments. I'm going to be in DC next semester which means no access to those instruments until the fall.

Woah, this is happening again? How did I miss this.

I can do piano (haha yes another piano) and really really simple violin stuff.

Oh, there's a tiny chance I might be able to borrow a friend's tuba. If you want, maestro, I can look into that further. Especially considering we're rather lacking in the bass department.

Hahahahahaha rather lacking doesn't mean ENTIRELY lacking, goddamn. I'm just saying that one bass trombone isn't really what you'd call a standard bass section for an "orchestra" :P

Does 16 pianos sound like an orchestra to you? (To quote the last attempt at this)
Title: Re: The NSM Community Orchestra Project II!
Post by: FierceDeity on November 28, 2013, 08:16:46 PM
That's why I put "orchestra" in quotes :P either way, large instrumentation generally requires a decent amount of bass. Which, technically speaking, piano can play, but at any rate THE POINT IS, I thought it might be nice to add an instrument at the bottom of the range. Jeez, haha.

This is why I will now refer to such endeavors as a "Piano Orchestra" with additional instrumentation.

Had some issues with most of the flutes (+ the kazoo, but it might be okay. It's a pretty weird instrument), they kinda blow atm. Too cold in my apartment apparently and I don't have any whiskey to fix 'em up with ^^
If you ever need me in a rush, send me a pm and I'll be here before you say akokspfkesofaehojef backwards three times

I can play any and all percussion instruments. I prefer mallets (anywhere from 2-4 mallets) and timpani, but i play anything.

If you are reffering to me and the mallet instruments, then yes, but only at my school do i have access.  I am in the television production class at my school and thus have video editing skills if they are needed.
