Started reading the Manga.
Not that bad, I guess its something in the anime that makes people like it so much.
I don't have any experience with the manga, but the light novels are really good overviews of the show (and actually what the show is based on).

Also, SocialFox, I don't think the manga does the intellectual aspects much justice, but that's just me. You're probably better off with the show. This is my own personal preference, but I feel that for what the show covers, it's better than the light novels. As the light novels progress however, various philosophical ideas and character development improve significantly. So be sure to start reading them if you choose to watch the show! The show and the movie take parts randomly from the first 5 novels however, I believe, so you might have to do a bit of scouring if you do that. Good luck and I hope you enjoy the rest of Melancholy!

I would agree with that (but again, have not read the manga, only seen the anime and read the first novel). The novel is pretty much exactly the anime, with some extra stuff that couldn't fit into the show's runtime, so I think the show would be the best route to take, especially for new fans. It lets you visualize the characters much better.

So far, I'm not sure which voice acting I hate more, English or Japanese.
God damnit, and I was so close to getting through Ep. 1 without any boob jokes.
Don't come here just to point out things like that. :P I already told you the first few episodes have boob jokes and stuff. On the other hand, stick with the English just for kyon--he's the best of either dub. Mikuru is annoyingly high pitched and Haruhi annoyingly obnoxious at times but especially during the movie, Kyon has a great voice for his character-- Tomokazu Sugito (he Japanese voice) sounds a bit too immature in my opinion. I think they're both really good dubs though.
Trust me, ignoring the fan-service and watching the show is definitely worth it.
It picks up a lot after the first few episodes!

Haruhi is a fuckin psychopath, Mikuru is getting borderline raped by Haruhi wayyyyyy too much, and Kyon is the only person in the show that doesn't make me want to punch holes in walls(and I guess the transfer student that I can't remember the name of)
But I'll give this show a fair chance still.

I think what SlowPokemon meant by that was that he was only able to fully appreciate the entire work when he could see it from all angles. And that he originally felt that he was watching it under obligation (since I may or may not have been forcing him, ehehe) or having nothing else to do, when he misattributed his watching of the show to one of the previous reasons than of interest.
Just finished Ep. 4. Shit got serious, bro. Definitely wasn't expecting that.

I think it was necessary because of the movie.
But "The Sigh" was pretty stupid. Nothing new really. Of course they explain the mikuru beam, Shamisen and the cherry blossoms in the winter, and all that other stuff, but if they were planning to do that from the start they could've just included it in the first season..
And I know nobody cares; but the soundtrack from season two is actually really freaking good. "Semitori Kassen" "Omoide Tsukuri" "Meeting Time" are a few I remember.
I thought the sigh was classic haruhi just didn't add much to the plot.
I finally have all the BGM from season 1. From season 2 I think the endless eight resolution had good score.

The first time I stumbled upon The Melancholy, I was met with a picture of Ryoko.
(I think I was looking for a Higurashi replacement, and had so far been disappointed by Elfen Lied and School Days <--stay away from School Days!)I am positive that she was the reason I postponed watching the show, for many months. I just didn't like her - I mean, if the first thing you see, from a show you don't know what is, is that weird blue haired girl with more space between her eyes than the average Clannad-girl(seriously, there is a damn limit), then you wouldn't be rushing to see it, right? For all I knew she was the main character as well, that's not something you attract audience with, right?
It wasn't until later when I found the clip of Kyon playing soccer, that I decided to check it out again, but the thought of her almost scared me off. So I watched it with that in mind, hence I don't like her that much.
But her song, Cool Edition is awesome.

What I'm trying to say is that she is a bad promotive poster for the show. You don't see a picture of Ryoko and go "hm, I kinda wanna watch a show about this girl". I know she isn't a main character in the slightest, but when she was the first thing I found when I googled the show, she might as well have been the only character in the whole series. I got turned off, and didn't try again for many months.
It's like I'm mad at her for it, if you get what I mean..
Besides, I was looking for a Higurashi replacement after all - Ryoko doesn't look "potentially" scary and murderous, so that was a turn-off as well.

My vote is for "The Day of Sagittarius"--it's just classic Haruhi. The comedy is stellar, and the characters are all given great moments. "Someday in the Rain" is probably second place--I just love that episode despite the fact that nothing happens in it.

Episode 00 is actually an episode that was supposed to air later on, but KyoAni took a stunt and aired it first, because it is freakin hilarious.
If you want, you can go ahead and watch it now, I think that would be best - besides, if you decide to watch it when it was supposed to air, like slow suggests, you wouldn't know when to do so, or where to find it..
So watch it now at once! you won't be skipping through the story or anything, just watch it now. It was supposed to be watched first, after all :)

Sorry, Jompa, I'm going to have to disagree about Bubbles7689 watching Episode 00 though! You would have no clue what was going on and since low comedy is used at times, I don't think you would enjoy it very much! At least not without the experience of a few Season 2 Episodes (which will provide background for Episode 00). As Jompa said, Episode 00 has little to do with the plot, but it would cause unnecessary bewilderment and bemusement, I feel. Plus, I think you're watching it chronologically anyway, instead of through broadcast order.

And that episode isn't even funny when you know how it happened - it's just a fail of a movie. It should be watched first for optimal enjoyment!
I...must disagree. I've seen the episodes in broadcast order (DVDs come with second disc that contain the episodes in broadcast order in Japanese with English subs) and the chronological order really is best. Especially when combined with season two mixed in.
The only one I might agree with is episode 00 being viewed before the Sigh, but I still think after is better and certainly not first...
That episode was hilarious despite my knowing the background, water u taking abowt. It was a great contrast in mood too, in that it reminded us of the brighter side of Melancholy.
And although I concur with the sentiment that broadcast order is most enjoyable to some (I actually initially watched it broadcast order and loved it), others may prefer chronological order because it makes logical sense (Ninja'd: See, SlowPokemon is one of those rational others!!!). And in order to keep Bubbles7689's interest, I think chronological order is our safest bet!
In my opinion broadcast order is something like a novelty that you can go back and experience later--I can't imagine how many people were turned off to the series due to the strange timeline.
Well, I suppose you guys can do what you want. I didn't even like the sigh that much so I think it is stupid to group that genius episode with those episodes. So I think for optimal enjoyment, it should be watched first, but some people have different opinions. Bubbles, do what you want! It is a good episode regardless!

I think part of the reason I retained enjoyment was because I did all of Season 1 in one go, however, so I think you're correct in why it may detract from experience; it certainly would be irksome to have to wait a week to learn that whatever mystery you were thinking of won't be resolved until much later! Not everyone can be so (dare I say, unnecessarily) patient. I usually tell people to watch in broadcast order for that reason.
If both seasons were aired simultaneously, I would air them in chronological order with Endless Eight aired every other week. ::) Or something like that.
lmao Imagine if they aired everything in chronological order, one Endless Eight episode/week. EVERYBODY will watch every episode, so they wouldn't miss anything. They have no idea that it will go on for two months.

The second episode of Endless Eight is the best because Kyon is too sexy for his shirt in the intro and Koizumi is legit sexy

The broadcast order is out of sequence because it's more of a stream of consciousness. Melancholy is actually a series of Kyon's flashbacks (hence why it's sometimes called Kyon's order). Melancholy Part VI is a good dramatic end to Season 1 (though, out of chronology), whereas Someday in the Rain is more thought-provoking and more peaceful. Both have merits as a finale, but for whatever reason, the director chose Part VI as an ending for broadcast order. Someday in the Rain is the finale chronologically for Season 1.

If you are wondering about season 3, and know little about the situation, read this:
There is of course no way of knowing wether or not KyoAni decides to continue their greatest series, with another season. We all know that the story continues past The Disappearance, so why wouldn't KyoAni continue?
1. Maybe they are gonna. I mean, it's only been three years. That was the gap between season 1 and season 2 & the movie, so maybe it's the same this time, tho probably it's a larger gap this time.

2. They aren't gonna make another one because: Who is gonna voice Haruhi!?? That is the key question. "But Jompa, why can't they just have Aya Hirano do the voice for Haruhi, just like she always have?" Well, that's because it turns out miss Aya Hirano more or less is a slut. She had sex with her entire band on her tours, and this was exposed to the public. Apparently it wasn't exactly normal sex either. Imagine how big a scandal this was in Japan! This slaughtered her career. And it gave a bad name to the series, so KyoAni didn't want anything to do with her.
Now, I'm a rational and tolerant man, so to me this isn't anything special. I don't view her as a skank, and I still think she is great! I would love to hear her as Haruhi in a third series, however, the relatively orthodox people of Japan don't feel the same way.
Ta-da! So most probably there wont ever be a continuation of the series. A very sad fact.

Yes, that's how I've always suspected. Haruhi seems more of some sort of scapegoat. Despite it being called Melancholy (and other words in the novels), it's really Kyon that's always the bored one. Haruhi is always having fun and Kyon has something to do because of her demands. I feel that the movie strengthened this theory a bit, considering that Kyon desired the world-where-Haruhi-ostensibly-has-God-like-powers-to-change-reality over Yuki's because he had fun there. It would also make sense for Kyon to have his way directly (it was his choice to return, things worked out perfectly for him somehow, etc.), since it seems unlikely for a constituent of god-like powers (Yuki) to usurp the god-like being (ostensibly Haruhi) and not do what the god-like being wishes. In addition, if Kyon truly held the divine powers, Haruhi becomes a target for aliens, time travelers, and espers instead of him, therefore allowing him to have way more fun than Haruhi in that sense!
The theory that Kyon is a slider also holds strong ground. In the novels, when Haruhi announced to the class that she's into the bizarre, she mentions "aliens, time travelers, espers, and sliders," where as in the show, she only mentioned the first three. Since Haruhi gets everything she wishes for in some shape or form, this is evidence that Kyon may possibly be a slider. Further evidence is given in the movie, since, although it may appear that he did not go across the multiverse on his own, he slid through dimensions nevertheless.
By the way, Bubbles7689, the phantom girl was Yuki!!! Couple of theories for that; Yuki could have manifested an image of a phantom girl to Haruhi, Yuki could have returned to the present to correct what went wrong (as you recall, there were three Yukis, Yuki who alters the world, Yuki from the future, and Yuki watching over past Kyon and past Mikuru from Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody; it's possible that either World Altering Yuki or Watchful Yuki stayed behind. If not, alien powers were utilised), Yuki is just amazing, etc.
It's also important to remember that there were actually three Kyons present when they returned back to the normal world; the Kyon that's stabbed by Asakura, the Kyon that's from the future that saves that Kyon, and the Kyon of that time period sleeping in bed! The future Kyon returns to the future, but that means that there are still two Kyon's left! So the falling down the stairs scene was apparently supposed to merge the remaining Kyons together or something. I'm confused on the details of this, but stick with it!!!

The thing I was originally confused about is that in time, Asakura stabbing Kyon at the end actually takes place BEFORE she sees him in school (in fact, that would happen later that day). The only thing I can think to explain this is that they rewrote history, and those three days or so that Kyon spent in the changed world with Yuki and Asakura no longer exist. If they did, Asakura would have acted very differently, having tried to kill Kyon a few hours before showing up at school.
Also, the word for "wind" in Japanese is "kaze" which also means "cold" (as in the sickness). Coincidence that the great wind Yuki used to change the world caused a ton of students to catch colds? XDDD

That was my original thinking too, but it doesn't make sense for Asakura to see Kyon at school and act normally after trying to kill him, besides two reasons:
1. She knows Nagato has feelings for Kyon and she wants to protect that
2. It hasn't happened at all when she first sees Kyon, and they rewrote history. I think it's likely that an alternate timeline was established at that point, and that in another reality Kyon never changed the world back. This is the reality he finds himself in.
So the Kyon that gets stabbed is the Kyon that was sleeping in his bed in an alternate timeline? Ok, then how did he get pushed down the stairs?

I was just thinking that too XD The only reason he would have made it up would be to keep Haruhi from knowing about Nagato using her powers and all the stuff that happened, but she remembers seeing him fall. I think I heard somewhere that the only person who could've pushed him down the stairs would be past Nagato, but I need to know how all that fits into place before I figure out who did it XD
It makes me wonder if the novel explains the situation better (though I doubt it, as the anime tends to be a word for word carbon copy of the novels).
I thought of another way. Nagato wiped everyone's memories and filled them in with the memory of Kyon falling? She changed everyone's but Kyon's because hes Kyon

She did say that if Kyon tried to convince her not to change the world, she would just wipe their memories of ever having that conversation. So I guess she could do the reverse and add memories too

Yeah Mashi and I had this conversation a while back. I think Koizumi is definitely in love with Haruhi, but it's unrequited love and he knows nothing will ever come of the relationship due to her feelings for Kyon. It's further cemented by the fact that he constantly makes references to being jealous of Kyon, refers to Haruhi as a "rather charming person," and the entire scene on the roof in Endless Eight Part II-VIII--I refuse to believe his comment "Perhaps I should do it" was a joke. He was dead serious, if only for a moment or so, and besides there's some truth behind every "just kidding."
Probably why he loves making Kyon feel awkward too, lol.
Yeah, also it was hinted at during the Endless Eight when they were looking at the stars. He seemed kind of jealous of Kyon but just...accepted it?

Kyon definitely likes Haruhi on some level (this becomes incredibly apparent in the later books), and he feels something for her that isn't quite there with Mikuru.
In my mind, I compare it to how Ron can admit he likes Lavender Brown, but constantly fights and bickers with Hermione, who turns out to be his true love.

In all seriousness, yeah just watch the first arc and decide if you want to keep going. I don't know if there's a specific point when it "gets good." For most people that tends to be episode 4, but I think it's different for everyone.

No, Jub, I just feel like that isn't the order that was intended. I like the broadcast order, because like its name says, it's the order the series was broadcasted in. And it doesn't lack chronology! It's just ep 00, which was aired first so that people would get a taste of the show before it actually started, and then later on showing how they made it.
I honestly think it would be more boring to watch it AFTER they showed how they made it, because the humor of the episode comes from shock value.
The episode works kinda like a pre-air OVA.
And what's called "the Haruhi order" is the chronological order anyway.
The Kyon order is the broadcast order, and then there's some other order, for the DVD or whatever, idk.
And Slow; the reason I crossed it out is because I actually DON'T feel that way:

Haruhi makes a new logo for the SOS Brigade website, but then the website gets weird.
A girl named Emiri Kimidori comes to report that her boyfriend is missing, because the right place to report that kinda stuff is to a school activity club with "SOS" in its title.
Apparently her boyfriend is the president of the computer club, who was harassed by Haruhi in the past.
Haruhi takes on the mission of finding him, of course.
The Brigade searches in the President's apartment. But Haruhi leaves.
The others find a data lifeform presenting itself as the fear of the Computer Society's president: a camel cricket in an overlapping closed space.
Koizumi and Nagato fights the cricket and saves the computer guy.
The lifeform had existed for billions of years and had been in hibernation until Haruhi's logo had appeared on the internet, making everything go nuts.
The whole "missing"-thing that happened to the computer club guy happened to eight other people as well
So after the SOS Brigade has saved all of them, Yuki modifies Haruhi's logo to remove the danger. It is revealed the Computer Club president never had a girlfriend and Emiri was just a pretend client set up by Yuki.
So cute little Emiri was an alien all along, just like Yuki and Asakura.

I've been watching listening to episodes of Melancholy while doing my homework. :)
Only one more Endless Eight to go! I'll watch it tomorrow and then finally move on!
So I have Season Two on DVD, meaning I now own the complete series! ;D
I have made it through one disc so far, which has "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody" and the first three Endless Eights. Surprisingly, I'm really enjoying the Endless Eights so far. Maybe I just skipped them out of disgust the first time because I wasn't expecting anything like that, but really it's quite enjoyable if you know what you're getting going in. It's fun to spot the differences and such, and with the additional scene in the middle of the night in parts 2-8, there isn't as much boring montage as there is in part 1.
On a slightly related note, I wish I could find the soundtracks for season two, because the music in the last ten minutes of "Endless Eight Part 2" is some of my favorite music in the series.
The endless eight has such good OST!

Kyon goes back in time at a point later on after the film to rescue himself from Asakura. The two are not different "versions", rather they coexist like Mikuru Asahina and her adult counterpart. Nagato and the others likely got him to the hospital and tended his wounds. My theory is that the "pushing down the stairs" incident never really happened.
Also I hope you watched through the credits!

Well there's the post credits scene, but the music is beautiful--it's Yuki's Japanese voice actress singing. It's fitting given how much of the film was about Yuki.

Oh my god I just realized something as I was re-watching the series just now!!! :D
Something I discovered in episode 4
Episode 4 is the episode where Kyon gets Ryoko's letter about meeting in the classroom later that night.
But before that, he goes to the clubroom, right? :D
Nagato is there, and so is Haruhi.
So he stands at the window and thinks about the letter and Haruhi is sitting at the computer, tryng to upload the pictures of Mikuru, but Kyon stops her.
As he is supposed to delete them, he just puts them in his own hidden folder, right?
And the second he saves the pictures there Haruhi gets up, and start walking out of the clubroom.
I think she realized that Kyon saved the photos, realizing that he likes Mikuru, and getting sad over it
because..:
When Haruhi is about to walk out the door, she is met by Mikuru.
Now, we don't see her face, but Mikuru does, and if you pay attention - Mikuru is very surprised to see Haruhi's face!
Haruhi leaves.
Mikuru asks if something happened, but Kyon denies it.
It is somewhat obvious that Haruhi was crying, or at least almost crying, here!!
Some time later, Koizumi comes by to say that he can't come today, and that he has to go to work(!).
What is Koizumi's work?
Kyon ask this too.
And we do know the answer.
Other than being a spy for his organization to keep an eye on Haruhi, he also has to take care of the Shinjins (or whatever they're called), right?! :D
So the reason Koizumi couldn't come to the clubroom was because Haruhi was sad and created a shinjin! :D

Anyways, she gets sad, duh.
And right before Kyon gets home, he meet with Koizumi, who wants to show him something.

And he now has the opportunity, since a shinjin has appeared(!)
Aaaaah, so the reason the shinjin appeared is because Haruhi got sad after telling the story to Kyon, aaaah.. :D

I know that no one here has watched White Album, but I just realized that Kyon's house is almost identical to Mana's house in White Album.
But no one cares about that..
I had some time before work today, thanks to my last class being cancelled, so I watched The Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzumiya I-VI.
It is a curious show, relying greatly on meta-humour and an audience familiar with Manga and Anime tropes. Upon a first galnce, the show unfolded in a predictable manner, with the first series ending the logical conclusion that it set up for itself.
The supernatural elements are fair, but largely ancillary to the High-School comedy that is the show's premise. After ruminating on the first six episodes, I have come to the conclusion that this show was a great labour of love and care. I admire that in any work of art, but the substance isn't enough to drive me to complete the show.
A fair amount of the comedy was crude, and rather pandering to the shows audience, which I believe wasn't for adults in any capacity. I can understand why people here greatly admire the show, it's quirky and weird and sends a general message that says "It's okay to want more out of life, it's okay for people to not understand you, so go be special."
I expect a great deal out of movies and television these days, I find myself generally enjoy comedies less and prefering dramas more, favoring writing and plot over jokes and errors. This show, while it does have some decent dramatic moments, just doesn't deliver for me as much as I'd like, and the jokes fall flat. The plot is something I do enjoy, as I enjoy good science-fiction which is where this show resides, but it hasn't been enough to particularly impress me.
Final thoughts on The Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzumiya I-VI: Fair.
I might check out the rest later, but it's not high on my "To-Do List".
You have good points Maestro, but I don't think too greatly of reviewing a show you haven't finished. It leaves your statements without support, as you haven't even experienced the main plot yet, and your points would only apply to the little fraction of what you've seen so far, anyways.
But I do admire you for watching 6 episodes before giving up - I don't think I could've done that with a show I didn't like.
I never said I gave up, nor did I say I didn't like it. It just didn't impress me. That's just where I had to stop before it was time to hop back onto the train of life.
I realize that I've only sratched the surface, but I figured I share my initial impressions of the show. The show was fair, I might pick it back up later, it just wasn't enough for me to keep going at my next break in resposibilites.
Yep you're absolutely correct, Maestro. I feel that the first six episodes are an interesting entity but honestly they aren't among my favorites of the series. My hope is that you stick it out and continue watching, but I appreciate you giving the show a fair chance if you do decide to quit for a while.
The thing is, somewhere along the series the viewer starts to love it. I just can't figure out where exactly because t seems to range anywhere from episode 4 to the Disappearance film. I've yet to find anyone who's seen all of it and doesn't include it among their favorites.

It is a damn good show, (deny it if you want,) you just start liking it when your mind is ready to accept that it is awesome.
For me, it was when I first heard Kyon's narrating. The sexy voice of Crispin Freeman had me hooked from the start.

Five episodes of the Endless Eight could just be skipped, though.. If it's like a last option or something. We all know it's just the exact same thing.. You could even just watch the second Endless Eight six times, wouldn't make a difference.
You would miss out on the OST though!

Something I discovered in episode 4
Episode 4 is the episode where Kyon gets Ryoko's letter about meeting in the classroom later that night.
But before that, he goes to the clubroom, right? :D
Nagato is there, and so is Haruhi.
So he stands at the window and thinks about the letter and Haruhi is sitting at the computer, tryng to upload the pictures of Mikuru, but Kyon stops her.
As he is supposed to delete them, he just puts them in his own hidden folder, right?
And the second he saves the pictures there Haruhi gets up, and start walking out of the clubroom.
I think she realized that Kyon saved the photos, realizing that he likes Mikuru, and getting sad over it
because..:
When Haruhi is about to walk out the door, she is met by Mikuru.
Now, we don't see her face, but Mikuru does, and if you pay attention - Mikuru is very surprised to see Haruhi's face!
Haruhi leaves.
Mikuru asks if something happened, but Kyon denies it.
It is somewhat obvious that Haruhi was crying, or at least almost crying, here!!
Some time later, Koizumi comes by to say that he can't come today, and that he has to go to work(!).
What is Koizumi's work?
Kyon ask this too.
And we do know the answer.
Other than being a spy for his organization to keep an eye on Haruhi, he also has to take care of the Shinjins (or whatever they're called), right?! :D
So the reason Koizumi couldn't come to the clubroom was because Haruhi was sad and created a shinjin! :D

I don't think she was sad because she saw that Kyon saved the pictures and felt rejected. It was more of a "he got the better of me" thing, and for once she didn't get her way. Since shes Haruhi, she throws a fit whenever something doesn't go as she wanted it to.
But that's nothing to start crying over.
We can agree that "Haruhi loves Kyon" is a rather strong theme in the series, and I think this was an example of that,
but that's just me.

When The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya re-aired in 2009 with the season two episodes mixed in, they aired one episode every week. That means that for eight weeks, no one saw anything but Endless Eight. And at the beginning of each, Kyon's phone rings. And his little sister says "Kyon-kun, denwa!" ("Kyon, the phone!"). Basically it became a meme where when you hear "Kyon-kun, denwa" you want to kill something with frustration.

So I sat down to continue this series with the next five episodes, which proved to be better suited as they side-stepped the science-fiction a bit in favor of more typical high-school comedies.
episode-by-episode
The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya was nothing special in plot, but it did give me chance to see how the characters behave when they're not busy fufilling their prime directive of the show, which was nice. There some good jokes that I got a laugh out of, but overall the humour and writing was more of the same.
Bamboo Leaf Mystery saw a return of the science-fiction and was a nice bit of clever writing tying back to a off handed line from the Meloncholy series. That's about it, though. I do enjoy plots where "It was me all along" when done well, and this episode did it well.
Mysterique Sign introduced what is I'm assuming to become the primary theme from the show: a detective drama. A student is lost and the SOS Brigade sets out to find him. This episode was largely forgettable, I just saw out and all I remember was the climax with the giant grasshopper. The writing was fair, the humour wasn't there, it was largely a forgettable moment.
The Remote Island Syndrome duology found the gang vacationing on a deserted island. It sets itself up as your typical beach episode as is required from high-school comedies. Then their host is mysteriously killed when a typhoon hits the island. Now I enjoy good mysteries, and a staple of a good mystery is allowing the viewer an equal chance of solving the mystery as the detective. Now if I could solve the damn thing the moment they opened the door, then that's just some poor, poor writing. It was a large cliche, and the resolution was rather unsatisfying and just left me mad. I felt cheated out of what promised to be a good story, but it was all spoiled knowing how it would all end.
Next comes the Endless Eight, which following that last episode, I am not looking foward in any way. That last one just left me angry, and as far as I understand the only thing the next eight have going for them is the score. Because I believe the only way to watch any series is from start to finish with the good and the bad, I must continue with the Endless Eight in full.
Ouch.... Good luck with that....
Yeah the series's second season (Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody, Endless Eight, and Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya) was definitely not its better one.
The problem is the show doesn't take itself seriously until Disappearance, which is easily the highlight of the series in my opinion. Until then it resorts to several gimmicky aspects and fanservicey humor. Like I said before, I didn't really like haruhi until I finished it. I just think it's better to watch after you've seen it once.

I think Endless Eight is great personally, but it's easy to see a lot of problems with it. Watching all of them only makes the conclusion better, in my opinion. It's just that season two didn't have as much diversity.

Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody set up Disappearance and was the first time present-Mikuru was actually useful! It provided some background on Yuki (sits in a room for 3 years and has actually met Kyon and Mikuru before! And will do so again in the movie!). Not to mention more obvious things, such as the paradox of Kyon causing Haruhi's obsession with aliens, time travelers, and espers (and I think sliders in the book? I forget, too lazy to check). Also, John Smith!!!
But anyhow, the implications for this episode are phenomenal (I've only mentioned a couple). You're all frivolous!!!
Endless Eight was frivolous, but it's A++++++++. But Yuki and everyone loves her and <3.
And I felt Sigh was masterfully done, to be honest. It was incredibly emotional and serious at points (Haruhi making Mikuru drunk, and Tsuruya helping her do so). Honestly I love the second season, but you can't deny it's less accessible than the first.

The Season One soundtrack clocks in at roughly an hour and twenty-five minutes (not including the shortened versions of Mikuru's song, God Knows, and Lost My Music), while the season two is about two hours and twenty minutes. I wonder how much of it was actually used?

And I noticed: At that montage of scenes where they film Mikuru in her bunny girl outfit, Koizumi with the reflection board always either stands in the shot or in some shadow - haha, he's totally useless :P
I thought the Sigh was rather well-done, but I must agree that it's better if you've already seen Episode 00. Unfortunately, there is really no good place to watch Episode 00 in the series XD It always feels awkward
So now that I've fallen in love with The Sigh too, there's not a single bad part of the series anymore - hurra! :)
And ep 00 is supposed to be as awkward as possible, so I think it fits better as the first episode :P
Here's something of a top ten list, it's of my favorite moments in the Haruhi anime. Anything goes, including The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, so please be warned that there are major spoilers within!

10. "I am also a ventriloquist" ("The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00")
In a truly bizarre pilot episode full of terrible acting and accidental hilarity, one moment will undoubtedly tip you over the edge into hysterical laughter. Shamisen the cat starts giving Yuki battle advice until Yuki suddenly smacks him with her wand and deadpans "I am also a ventriloquist," apparently to explain the fact that her cat just started talking. Seems legit.
9. Yuki reads ("Someday in the Rain")
Totally in sync with the rest of this uneventful, quiet episode, the camera cuts to a nearly five minute shot of Nagato reading her book. Seriously. It's bizarre moments like this that make Melancholy what it is, utterly quirky and charming.
8. Koizumi and Kyon ("The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part 5")
An important event for the series and a big moment for Itsukyon fans everywhere, Koizumi shows up at Kyon's house and takes him on a trip to visit closed space, view the Shinjin wreaking havoc upon said space, and demonstrate his esper powers to Kyon. It's truly epic. Also, they hold hands.
7. Kyon loses it ("The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya Part 4")
Kyon's anger toward Haruhi reaches a boiling point. Sure, he's being harsh and nearly punches her in the face, but she got Mikuru drunk in order for her to look cuter in the film. It's deeply uncomfortable for everyone involved, including the audience, who really is not sure what Kyon will do. Masterful technique involved in this scene.
6. Ready? (The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya)
Yuki offers Kyon an escape from his perfect-not-perfect altered reality. After some big consideration, he turns down the offer of a less annoying Haruhi, a personality-filled Yuki, and a pleasant Asakura in return for his old life. A great decision indeed.
5. The kiss ("The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part 6")
The Melancholy arc climaxes (no pun intended) with a huge romantic element between Kyon and Haruhi, even if she does later write it off as a dream. The epic operatic musical piece in the background explodes as Kyon kisses Haruhi, ending their adventure in closed space.
4. Turning point of history (The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya)
Just after Kyon has done some very deep thinking and is prepared to right the world, an all-but-forgotten-about Asakura stabs him brutally in his side, cheerfully explaining that she would do anything to spare Nagato. She follows this up with a horrifying dance-twirl that splatters his blood over Nagato, staining her glasses. Oh, and did I mention the haunting choir?
3. Truth of Ryoko Asakura ("The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part 4")
This is by far most fans' moment that seriously gets them into Haruhi, and it's not difficult to see why: the shock at perfect, double-A-plus Ryoko Asakura announcing her intent to kill Kyon in order to get a reaction from Haruhi no doubt incited many spit-takes.
2. The solution that descended ("Endless Eight Part 8")
Although the Endless Eight arc is something of an ordeal that cannot fully be understood unless one has viewed it in its entirety, the ending never fails to induce chills. It's utterly weird that homework should be such a big deal, and yet you find yourself with a rush of triumph and sympathy for Kyon as he finally solves the dilemma of their never-ending endless summer vacation.
1. Awakening self-consciousness (The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya)
Kyon's epiphany--that is, when he finally admits to himself that he loves his life in all its weirdness--is one of the most powerful moments of the entire series. Set to Ryuichi Takada's beautiful score originally meant to accompany the "Ready?" sequence, the scene sends chills down my spine. It is the single most important moment to me because Kyon finally begins to mature as a character and admit that he has some sort of feelings for Haruhi. It's just A+++++++++

, and in the ecstasy he goes nuts on the field, stealing the ball from the opponents, and kicking it up into the air.
Kyon, the looser that he is (lets face it, he's a looser - but he's a damn cool looser) - anyways, the looser that he is, fixes his eyes on the ball, and in an attempt to kick it..!
...he misses completely, standing there with his leg in the air looking like an idiot :P
^That scene is the absolute first moment of the franchise I ever watched as a clip. It led me to The Disappearance, because in the YouTube clip it said "I don't own The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya", and after looking it up, I found ep 00, and after that I was hooked :P
(I have spoken about how I was turned off by the show at first because of Ryoko Asakura and therefore post-poned the show, but that happened long before I watched this - this was actually the catalyst that made me watch it!) :)

My favourite moment with Melancholy is in the movie, when Kyon finds out that Haruhi exists in the reality he was. He skips class like a boss and just runs and runs while my favourite score, "Suzumiya Haruhi no Tegikari" is playing on the background.

What Koizumi tells him about is that there are MANY organizations in similar positions to the ESPer boys, the time-travelers and the Thought Entity. And they are not always friendly towards each other.
He mentions bloody battles, sneak attacks, sabotage and even slaughter, going on behind the scenes.
And:
There are shown images of the neighborhood they are currently standing in - including a huge blood stain in the ground, and A FREAKING DEAD GUY LYING ON THE SIDEWALK!! And the two men who are over there doesn't seem surprised at all!!!

Again, whatever the novels says, is true - but I don't think this case is related, unless that is specifically stated in the novels.

No, it's rather fair to conclude that neither Mikuru and Kyon are aware of her presence.
Firstly, Mikuru walked away with Tsuruya after informing Kyon of whatever coupon thing she had; Mikuru's returning to Kyon to say something else implies that she wanted to say something Tsuruya didn't want to hear. This being the case, she would have bid Tsuruya's leave originally if she didn't think she would leave shortly thereafter. Not to mention that Tsuruya even states "That'll be all." (or if you want to be a fickler, "See ya." in the Japanese dub) and begins leaving afterwards.
Secondly, I don't see how you're reaching the conclusion that she was 10 meters away or that they weren't speaking loudly (the former because it's a cartoon and normal binocular cues aren't as effective and the latter because it was extremely conspicuous that they're speaking in loud, clear, colloquial voices). In addition, basic understanding of Physics would tell you that voices can be more clearly heard in a clear, quiet corridor due to the bouncing of waves across walls. Since we don't know specifics important to predict the effects of voice amplification in the scene, however, I'll give you the doubt for this.
Thirdly, the fact that she's so hard to miss most likely means that she was hidden for a reason. The directors of the show wouldn't randomly decide to shade her in darkness if they didn't want to make any implications. If you were in their (or his/her? Not sure.) positions, would you decide to randomly make a character appear for a couple seconds (and still be obfuscated by darkness) when she was presumed to leave?
And no, I don't think it's stated specifically in the novel, and it rightfully shouldn't. This show involves quite a bit of logical thinking and connotes various meanings. It would ruin part of the experience if everything were revealed.
Furthermore, I never said she learnt about Haruhi from the conversation they had. I stated in my post that she most likely knew prior (and if you've read the later novels, there's reason to believe that she's known about Haruhi for a while).
In addition, Mister Tanigawa is the type to like the multifaceted characters to throw in unexpected twists.
All in all, I think the evidence that Tsuruya was meant to be eavesdropping in that scene is immense. But believe whatever you wish, I won't try to convince you otherwise beyond this.

We never saw Tsuruya leave. I think she just went over to the wall, to let Mikuru and Kyon talk.
By the time Mikuru returns Tsuruya couldn't have made it very far, but about to where she is standing.
She is definately about 10 meters away, if not more.
The fact that she is in the shadow is because the entire corridor is. It is dark. Were they gonna create a spot where the sun was shining brighter, just for her?
And she is not really hiding, as I said, she is just grinning while watching a potential couple chat with each other. It's not really anything keeping Kyon from seeing her, just as well as we can see her.
OF COURSE, I don't know, but so far I don't believe that Tsuruya has anything to do with anything.
I agree with Mashi, I noticed that myself as well. It seems weird to just put her in a shot where she has no business.

Think about this then:
What if she just went over to the wall to wait for Mikuru finish talking to Kyon - perhaps because they had to do more festival preparations after this - they could just be on their breaks, idk.
It is not weird in any way that she would wait for Mikuru to get done, because they might have had important stuff to do after their little break, so Tsuruya might have been a bit impatient and ready to break up their conversation if Mikuru took too long.
If that is the case then there is absolutely nothing weird about it.
It is easy to accept that they actually know she is there, but the fact that they don't know she is there seems kinda unbelievable:
Something important to consider is that she is not hiding even in the slightest.

It's for the atmosphere - that is something anyone could agree on.
And, she is in Kyon's field of vision - like, she definitely is in Kyon's field of vision(watch the clip).
And again, she is more than 10 meters away (watch the clip) - so the fact that she shouldn't be able to hear them talk, is conclusion that works.
Theory's are fun, but this one isn't supported - it requires more creativity to accept it than to decline it (which is a bad thing), and therefore I don't believe it,
unless I take up the novels and they convince me.

Light novels may be a bit better than the show to some, since they more conspicuously show character development, more of Kyon's inner monologue and things.

An Earnest Review of The Endless Eight

Well, I had managed to watch all of the Endless Eight before my laptop exploded. I'm sure there is no correlation between the two events. I was expecting a repetitive cycle during this part and braced myself accordingly. What I got was just that.
I understand what they were trying to go for here, but my largest problem stems from what could be said is my largest strength and attribute as a man of the arts: Variation.
I'm not asking for them to have done different things with each repetition, instead I would've much preferred them making subtle changes across the whole spectrum that would've hinted at, and eventually lead to, it's final conclusion. I didn't get any of that.
The worst part? It was boring. So boring. Not because it was the same thing over and over again, I can live with that. They just didn't do anything remotely interesting, or clever, or unique, or just out there.
Now, I had to ruminate on that for nearly three weeks, and combined with the last disappointment of the highly recommended show I'm just about done altogether. I'm going to give it one more shot. It the next episode doesn't impress me, or even entertain me, I'm going to pass on the series.
If you are going to give it one last shot, then I don't know if The Sight will impress you..
The only thing that kept me through the Endless Eight, was the soundtrack.
I don't even remember a soundtrack. And music is among the first things I remember from a film or show.

This is the beginning of a series of music polls--the first OST is the music from "The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00." My favorite is definitely "End Roll"--I mean, the Mikuru theme song is just great! You can't go wrong with an instrumental version.
I also like the little piano solo in "Daidanen" and the rest of it is just gloriously bad midi music (see "Mikuru Henshin! Soshite Sentou!").

Anyway, I only found out about this show two days ago. I wanted to post about it after the fourth episode, but now I have no idea which one I am up to, seriously! What is most loveable about this anime is the mix of high school scenes vs. random fiction.. errm, stuff. Also finding myself laughing at some scenes is not something that I catch myself doing often. I may not have seen that many anime series as others have, but the characters were refreshing and a big thumbs up for the English dub!
Koizumi's explanations confused me at times though; I remember one sentence that sounded something like "It's not that we know that we know what you don't know, you know?" ??? And I found myself thinking, "Please Koizumi, breathe between sentences!"
Oh, and I had no idea what the Endless Eight would be like... it was a really weird feeling, to be honest. I think I deserve a T-shirt that says "I survived the Endless Eight", lol - c'mon now, hand it over. ;D

Omg, I'm surprised that this is the first time I've heard it phrased like that, it's the perfect description! What helps me a lot is listening to the soundtrack, isn't it weird? I listened to some of the Character songs too, and just like the YT comments say, Yuki does sound a little bit like a Vocaloid. It makes perfect sense why that is though!
I couldn't help it, I watched the movie and all I can say is that it made me like Yuki Nagato even more. It took Kyon a while to realise it though, I felt really sorry for Yuki after only a few episodes of the Endless Eight. The way she bought a different mask every time at the fair must have been what had kept her sane. :o
All in all, this is the kind of anime that
needs to be seen a second time. I shall and I will.. once holidays begin. I wouldn't want to sit during exams and tap my foot to the beat of "Haru Haru Yukai".

Saikyou Pare Parade isn't from the soundtrack used in the show, but it's the opening theme to the radio drama.
The video I posted is from the Tokyo Philharmonic's Haruhi concert, where they played loads of the OST arranged for orchestra - an amazing concert, I've seen it through on YouTube like three times.
They included Saikyou Pare Parade for some reason, and I'm glad they did, because that version of it is totally great.

Weeell, I kinda think there is at least like a 10% chance it's them - despite the Aya Hirano scandal-stuff that led to them not wanting anything to do with her. I think this because KyoAni and Aya Hirano just worked together on a video game (featuring Haruhi&co) back in summer or something, so a lot of people on the internet have the theory that they've like made up and stuff, which would be amazing. Though I'm just being optimistic, which is something I really don't want to be.

If you're asking about "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya":
It is (imo) an out of this world amazingly capturing and well-done two-seasons-&-one-movie-anime series from 2006, 2009 & 2011, adapted from a novel series. The show can be described as "unique", but at the same time not weird. It covers all kinds of genres, and kinda aces them all imo. And the music is enough reason alone to watch the show - like seriously - holy shit it's amazing.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is seriously a show that no one can dislike. After watching it you just know that you'll never be able to find anything like it.
If you're asking about the current topic of discussion - the anime adaption of the spin-off manga:
As announced last year, that manga will get an anime adaption, and yesterday it was announced that it will happen sometime in 2015. From what I understand, it will be about Yuki Nagato in the alternate world from the 2011 movie. Wether or not Kyoto Animation will be making this show as well is a pretty big deal for most Haruhi-fans, I believe, so that's what we're discussing about now.

While we're on the subject though, even if KyoAni is producing this new series, I can't help but be disappointed that they're not making more Haruhi. I'm sure the Yuki manga is good and all but there's just no way it can stack up.
But the way I see it; if KyoAni is doing this series, it means there is hope for more Haruhi.
News about the spin-off: All the voices will be done by the same VAs (which is amazing), but it won't be KyoAni - it'll be Satelight - and all the staff members will be new people (which sucks).

I marathoned the first seven episodes of this show the other night and I swear to god it made me feel so relaxed and happy that I'm probably going to end up watching the rest of it too.

These last two weeks untill today I have been hired to play with the high school F21's revue orchestra on their performances, which means that between all the scetches there are short musical numbers. Most of the numbers were awesome because they were all arranged by this cool guitarist with great taste in music, but some of the numbers were TERRIBLE, because they were requested by the high school - which means: lame pop music. On the day of the premiere I consulted the boss of the show about the All of the Lights-number, which was the worst one, and he said that if I could make the band play something else in three hours it would replace it. The number had to be fairly long - like 1.5-2 minutes. So I scribled down Itsumo no Fuukei, and ofc, we ended up playing it instead.
On the premiere when we played this amazingly cozy number with straight mute trombone on the melody it was a great hit with the publicum and was the number with the greatest applause. But the best thing about it was a guy up to the right who was screaming "HARUHIIIII!!!! HARUHIIIIIIIII!!!! HARUHIIII SUZUMIYAAAAAAAA!!!! WOHOOOOOO!!!!". That was fantastic.

The movie still remains to be one of my favourite pieces of media I've ever watched; good tastes!!!
After listening to "Suzumiya Haruhi no Tegari" from the movie soundtrack my heart won't stop aching, so I guess I'll have to re-watch the series again soon. I just watched the first episode after staying up half the night waiting. And it was good.
Though so far I can't really think about it as more than a spin-off. Though it had hints of that good old haruhi-feel. I know nothing about the spin-off-manga. I kinda hope it'll at some point stray off from the love comedy to a more plot-based thing, but this isn't so bad. It's like the old show with only the comedy included and in a less realistic way. Those are my thoughs after the first episode.
I'm interested to see how Haruhi and Koizumi get involved, if it'll just be slice of life'y or if it'll have anything to do with the alternate universe from the old show

So I was watching the subbed show a couple months ago, and it was kinda meh for me because I was just reading everything without inflection, etc, but now I've found a place to watch the dub and it is AMAZING. I'm laughing my ass off at all the subtle references to the old show/other universe in every episode. It really is like what melancholy would be like in nagato's world. It's beautiful.
I just finished with episode 3, and I will most likely tackle 4 tonight as well.

I marathoner through the first 6 episodes last night because it was so good, and this morning I watched the seventh episode to find that there was no link to the next dubbed episode...most likely because it hasn't been released yet :/ here I thought the entire dubbed series had been released, and now I've learned my lesson...
I must say, now that that "big, important" story arc is over, that I am not pleased with how this show turned out. The reason is just that after the arc was kinda leading us to believe that it would be related to the other world, which totally wasn't necessarily the case, was a huge diappointment, and since it wasn't necessarily the case, that makes that whole arc pretty silly in the first place, which combined with the fact that it was an incredibly slow and lame arc, drags the show down for me a very big notch.
This most recent episode was back to the "pleasent tribute to the old show"-routine, which is the only thing I am able to look at this show as (and the only way I like it).
I really want the old show to continue. That'd be amazing.
