Title: Is Musescore worth it for sheet music?
Post by: KaileyWaelchi on May 09, 2025, 12:51:28 AM
I've been looking for a source for obscure scores that can't really be found in books (video game music, movie soundtracks especially). Musescore has these things, but they claim that I can only get them after paying for a subscription.

I'm totally onboard with getting a subscription if its worth it. But there are so many bait and switches out there. So I'm wondering, can anyone who has /had a muse score membership comment? If not, are there are sheet music services you like for buying / downloading sheet music?

Availability of obscure scores in Musescore is highly variable. Sheet music of some works is really hard to find anywhere on the Internet, for starters. Musescore is also filled with fan transcriptions, especially of new or upcoming works (e.g. of music from upcoming video games). Sadly, for many works, fan transcriptions are the only transcriptions you are going to get (think a significantly less filtered version of NinSheetMusic). You are already lucky if you get a VGM score on Musescore that you suspect was copied off of another score that was published on paper.

Feel free to go with the paid subscription if you're thinking of downloading lots of scores, especially the significantly better-looking and probably better-transcribed "Official Scores". If you're mainly thinking of dragging a tablet around with Musescore on it, don't bother with a paid subscription.
