Yosh people! Just thought it'd be better to have a thread about it so that our ideas don't get lost in the General Pokemon one.
So the purpose of this thread is to organize tournaments with specific rules and/or normal battles between NSM's members. (Obvious amirite?) You guys can also ask tips about movesets and teams here.

Yep guys, for this tournament we'll be using monotyped teams, which means every Pokemon must share a type with each other, but we'll also allow everyone to use a 'mon whose type has nothing to do with your team (i.e a Cresselia in an ice team for example) though Ubers are banned.

Okay so it's been almost a year and we didn't have any other tournaments. I'm pretty sure people (including myself) are not as busy now since school is over, so I think it's time for us to play Pokémans again!

BTW, you can single battle or double battle on BR--except in Double you can use up to four Pokemon of your picked six Pokemon, and in singles you can use up to three of your team of six...

Meh, that sucks. She won't let you change them even for just 30 minutes? What is she afraid of?
And yeah, you can do it on PBR, except I don't feel like buying the game since it's 50$. I'll try to find a friend who'd like to lend it to me.

Basically every single of your Pokemon must have the same type. For example, an Ice monoteam could have Articuno/Frosslass/Abomasnow/Jynx/etc. Sometimes rules also allow you to use one Pokemon with a different typing, kinda like a Zapdos in a monotype fighting team. I guess we need to know if we allow that or not.
Another thing I like about BR is that all your Pokemon are lowered to Lv50, like the Battle Frontier.
Anyway, my monotype team would be something like:
Gardevoir
Jynx
Mr. Mime (maybe)
Slowking
Espeon
...And something else, probably.
Hmm. f we did that it's have to be at low levels, I'd have to train fast.
Well luckily for me I have a Lv25 or so Smoochum in HG that I could trade over, Slowking is at Lv72 (my highest Lv in the game), and Gardevoir is Lv42, bred. Espeon is Lv25 (Bill's gift), and Mr. Mime is in its 30s, bred from a Mime Jr.
I also have a Lv38 or something like that Girafarig in Platinum that I could trade... so I wouldn't have much to do!

Winterkid~> We can set the lvl to 100 in Wifi battles, so as long as they have the moveset you want you should be fine.
Slow ~> So I'm guessing you want the Psychic type eh? We also need to determine who wants what. I guess I'll edit that in the first post. And as for the grass type you can use one. We'll go for the "you can use a pokemon whose type has nothing to do with your team" rule. :P

Hmm well there are plenty of ground and rock type to build a team with only one type. If you need Pokemon for your team I can lend you some too.

Yep, because they're part ground type. The key to building a good monotype team is to carefully choose your Pokemon based on what secondary type they have.

Jirachi's not Uber, it's OU. So yep, you can. And I thought about something, maybe you could download Pokemon Online so we could battle you there? We can also watch battles there and chat... though it's a lot more fun in Wifi, that could be a possibility if you want to participate.

The program is Pokemon Online. You have access to every 'mons and every moves they can learn. That's why I say it could be an option for you. You can just reproduce your SS team there.

Like one tournament you can only use poison and another you can only use psychic, or something like that.
I actually started making a poison monotype team... but then they died. They were about level 30.
Why's it forbidden to use wobbuffet?
^Because it can counter and take out any Pokémon, while being next to impossible to counter itself. Wobbuffet is such a wild card that most metagames ban it without further questions.

And I suppose that makes sense. HOWEVER... Shuckle is NOT banned... that could be good, except Roz is using Poison and therefore Toxic would have no effect... SIGH
Yep. With enough predictions, you can easily counter what comes in. Because of it's ability, Shadow Tag, no Pokemon can switch out. If it's a Pokemon like Scizor, you use Counter and if it's a special sweeper you use Mirror Coat... so yeah. Plus it has Encore to make it easier to sweep.
Slow ~> I'm not the only one you're going to battle :D Toxic is still a good choice.

I have to work on Friday too, that's why I wanted to post 15 minutes after I get home from school.
What works best for all of us is what we need to know, so that we can plan this accordingly.
Me, I can post it any day, Monday through Friday at 3:00 p.m. EST, Friday midnight or Saturday midnight when I get home from work.
I'll be busy all day Sunday, but I'd be willing to post brackets then if it's the only thing we can handle.

You can't, no.
And tiers are UU (underused) and OU (overused) and NU (never used) and things like that. :P
Pokemon are divided into Tiers: Uber, OU, BL, UU and NU. (There's also limbo but that's not important here.) Since we still don't know what 'mons are broken we'd better not used any gen V 'mons. Not fair when your opponents actually has Pokemon that will be considered Ubers when the tiers are made.
EDIT: Jub3r7, how can you make a dragon-type team when only 4 of them are not Uber? Just noticed it.
So how do I fix my server problem? Because I can't participate if no one knows how.

based on what I've read on help topics on the official forums, I've seen these solutions:
- wait a while
- exit and go online again
- forward the port 5080 on your router.
How do I do the last thing?

find your router, skip the advertisement by clicking on the link on the top of the page. then click on pokemon netbattle and instead of using the port 30000 it says use 5080
also if you're using a firewall it may be blocking it.

Crits, missed moves and para hax are part of the game. I've lost a couple of battles I would've won otherwise and the only thing you can do is deal with it. I don't think best 2 out of 3's better than just 1 game. You could be not lucky at all and lose 2 games because of crits or w/e.
Yeah, but it's not very likely, and either way the best player most likely wins. So that's just my opinion is all.
Wait a sec... you're going to have one-type teams? Using Gen. V mechanics, but only gen. IV 'mons? And Ubers are allowed?
I sense hugely schewed battles. Sorry to be so rash, but Dragon types mow all over the Uber tier, being paired with a lot of other types. A one-typed team can't compete with an all-dragon team, especially with Ubers factored in.
Oh, and tips to everyone: Don't use Ice or Poison-types. Ice might beat Dragon, but are too slow to cause any significant damage. Poison just sucks.
Gen IV mechanics, Gen IV mons, Ubers banned.

So until I get this figured out, there's not much I can do, but I'll see if i can get it fixed tonight.

Haha, kinda like me :P It's hard to make good movesets especially when you pick a type you rarely (i.e never) use. ><
Then you find about 7 different moves you want, and discover that most are special attacks and two are regular attacks. But then you realize your Pokemon has TERRIBLE special attack, and suddenly you don't have enough moves.

It's hilarious when you fight people with so many ubers, not expecting to win, but then 1-hit KO some of their legendaries.
Whirl cup is essentially another monotype tournament, no?
And it's easy to sweep ubers when you know what you're doing. Well actually we don't know if Kyurem/Reshiram/Zekrom are ubers so I guess I should say it's easy to sweep legendary 'mons when you know what you're doing.
Roz, the Whirl Cup is not the same as what we were just doing... in the Whirl Cup, everybody uses only Water-types.

Gen. I moves only? It would be a Psychic fest (I mean, how can you possibly harm them? Twineedle?). Mixed Dragonite would also cause untold mayhem, while all Grass-types would be near useless. Among other things.

your team had 3 weaknesses to psychic, ghost, and dark. I'd imagine psychic moves will be used by special attackers as Dark and Steel types(other than the magne's) are not present in Kanto.
Yeah, but you still have moves like Bite or Crunch as Dark-types, and there's Magnemite and Magneton with their Steel moves.
We're not using Gen I mechanics--just Gen I Pokemon.
I forgot that magnemite and it's evolution became steel types.

Also Shado, choice band on TTar would've been a good item choice.
If he decides not to use a choice band, it will be my fault from constantly battling him with my weaville.

tyranitar is a huge detriment to a dark team unless you use a weather move to get rid of the sandstorm that is slowly killing your own teammates with the exception of cacturne. sunny day is probably the most helpful with shiftry's chlorophyll and umbreon's moonlight. weavile, shiftry, and cacturne would have an extra hard problem against fire moves but they're so frail that they'd probably die from fire even without sunny day.

I started the thread because I'd thought it'd be interesting to have tournaments on NSM, but I didn't expect I'd have to take care of all the tourneys. Work + school = I don't necessarily have time to do it, so I don't mind you guys organizing stuff and taking care of them. :P

I have a moveset which would technically be impossible to create in-game due to various limitations, but PO makes it anyhow (still within our tourney rules). Are we saying PO ability > in-game limitations or vice versa?
You shouldn't use any illegal movesets, because it's unfair for your opponents (they probably won't expect it which sucks). But doesn't PO tell you when you have an illegal moveset? Anyways you could always contact me via PM and we could check it out.

It was lulzy. And he would've KO'ed your Vappy if he had used Evil Eye instead of w/e move he used when you got paralysed and you only had 24% of health left. I think it'd have helped him a little.

But after looking at Pokemon Online tutorials, i have a few requests, mainly that i think we should keep the moves limited to ones the Pokemon would actually be able to do. So no having like, Charmander using Hydro Cannon or something. Does that sound OK?
That's typical. What you SHOULD do is offer your idea on item clauses, double pokes, etc.

Ok i've got an idea for tonights unofficial tourney. I'm going to have everyone who gets there tonight make an entirely new team. Also, the only thing you are allowed to do is give each pokemon moves. No stat changing. It'll show how good a person is at making teams with little time.

So, smogon switched the default battle simulator to Pokemon Showdown. Because it's still in beta, there are tons of things they need to fix, but the only real advantages in switching from PO are the lack of a download, forfeits if the other person is taking too long, battle animations, and listed stat boosts. Other than that, it's a bit glitchy and has a temporarily broken ladder system (or at least the last time I checked.)

Hmm... here's what I think:
You should ban all Pokemon that appear in the Uber tier, even if they are a part of another tier; this would include (but not limited to) Pokemon such as Latios/Latias, Gorebyss (which ranges from NU to Uber), Salamence, and Speed Boost Blaziken.
You should, though, allow Pokemon that are in lower tiers (although you may not want to use some :P).

Yes, only one team is allowed. The first match will be a blind run for everybody, since you will post the replay of your match here. If you can't provide a replay from the first match, you should post your team here to make it fair.

For those not aware, a Monotype tournament would be one in which competitors may only use one type of Pokemon—for example, I might end up with the Bug team, and all of my Pokemon would have to be Bug-type.
At least, that's how most monotype tournaments would work. This one will be run differently in that each person may have one "wild card" Pokemon which may be of any type other than the one they are assigned. Slike used this rule, and I think it is a great addition! It means that, for example, the Grass type team has some semblance of a chance against the Fire type team.
Dual-typed Pokemon are allowed, meaning that I could use Scyther (a Bug-Flying type) on my hypothetical Bug team. Scyther would also be eligible for the Flying team. I can't think of any reason why this shouldn't be the case, but it might not have been obvious as "Mono" might imply that dual-typed pokemon wouldn't be allowed.
Post five types that you'd be happy with (in order of preference) and two that you would not want under any circumstance. If there is any way to ensure that people don't get the two types they listed in the Do not want category, I'll make it happen. When we get the 18 needed to start, I'll assign one person to each type. I'll take what's left over.
Once we get enough people to begin, there will be a 2-day period during which type trading will be allowed. If you decide to make a trade with someone, post it in the thread.

I really don't like this rule. Monotype-teambuilding is all about thinking how to counter your type's weaknesses. f.e. Five Dragons and a Heatran for Steel/Fairy/Ice. And BOOM you have a pretty good hyper-offensive team.
Also saying Grass has no chance of beating a Fire-team, there's Cradily and Ludicolo. Perhaps a Rain Dance team, with Ludicolo as the main sweeper. That'd be fun to see.

Correct me if I am mistaken Yugi, but the way his post was worked out seems to imply that this would be a Gen V monotype tournament, since there is no mention at all of Gen 6 (and because he mentioned "Drizzle and Swift Swim on the same team," and "Drought and Chyrophyll on the same team"), and especially because he used the Gen V banlist instead of the XY one.

It's VGC. Hit hard and fast. It's designed for short matches, so make sure you hit as hard as you can, when you can.
I thiiiiink my team's ready but it's super gimmicky so I think I'll fine tune it a bit first

To be honest I don't think I'll have time to battle as things are pretty hectic IRL haha
