Welcome to the Super Smash Brothers Brawl Tournaments Topic!  Yay!

Rules:
Players will be put into brackets, just like a tournament.  So depending on how many people we get, will depend on who plays who.

This will be a best 2 out of 3 tournament, where the loser will drop out, and the winner will go on.

Match One: The first match will be held on Battlefield.  No items, a three minute battle, no stock.
Match Two:  The second match will be held on Final Destination.  ALL items on low, a three minute battle, no stock.
Match Three:  If necessary, there will be a third and final match.  The two opponents will choose the level they listed below as their favorite, and the compter will choose one of the levels to play on (50/50 % chance).  Smash Balls will be set on low and it will be a three minute battle, no stock.

On Saturday, at 16:45 GMT, (10:45 am Western Coast, 12:45 pm Eastern Coast) we will meet in the NSM Chat room http://www.ninsheetmusic.net/chat (http://www.ninsheetmusic.net/chat).  From there we will have the first round matches at 17:00 GMT and we will all meet back in the chat to tell each other who won.  That should take approx. 10 minutes.  The second round will start at 17:20 GMT, we will have matches, meet back, 3rd round 17:40 GMT, matches then chat, then finally the final two will have their match at 18:00 GMT.  The losers are free to leave chat after their rounds are over.  THOSE WHO DO NOT SHOW UP BY 17:00 GMT WILL FORFEIT.  To make sure you know, what time it is, use this handy time thingy.


Select "Use The Following Date/Time:" and Enter, April 6, 2008 and for the time enter 17:00, 24-hour clock.  Then in the first box, select GMT, then in the second box, select the appropriate time zone for your area.

My thoughts:

Lag - Rematch within 2 minutes (if necessary). If it's been 2 minutes and you're leading, you don't want a rematch. Do you?

Disconnects - Rematch within 2 minutes if no one's leading. Or else it could be cheating.

But it's up to Concerto to decide.

Ah, I just noticed the rules.

I leave the tournament as we're playing the unskilled, "professional" way which is simply just for the people that aren't good enough to know how to use a stage or items to their advantage. Guess I'll just have to own you all with normal matches.

Not that I'm against turning off the idiotic items like the clock, which just slows everyone including the one who got it down for massive annoyance.

I consider a real tournament that would have fair matches that rely on your skill to include items and stages that make sense to include, as someone with TRUE skill would know how to deal with all kinds of different situations with items and stage hazards.

i agree with what gamer said, but i'll still be in the tournament.

we should play on the stages that we selected and there should be items, ATs and Poke Balls.

Well another reason I won't do it is that I probably won't have time and just not show up :P

Certian items shouldn't be allowed like the hammer or golden hammer.

Most other items you can catch if a person throws it.

No items = no fun, the point of brawl is to be awesome chaotic fun, isn't it?  You can turn off the golden hammer, but the normal hammer is fine.  Other items to be turned off: Clock that annoys the hell out of me because when I grab it it slows down me as well as everyone, and the Lightning which shrinks you when you grab it or makes everyone else bigger over half the time >:(

Don't forget the gay smoke bomb. If we're getting rid of the lightning, then get rid of the item that sucks the most.

What? Gay smoke bomb?  It's hardly even a bomb, it's actually fun to screw around with.

Besides, you can catch it or use shield.

or use it as cover.

The smoke bomb is awesome! I think in one of the matches with Shado, ZnD, and I, we had this huge clump of them from either Tingle or my Final smash that completely covered the stage, it was awesome fun.

Eh. Think what you want. I hate the smoke bomb, but I like Lightning and Clocks.

personally, i disagree to having have items on... but since that's obviously not going to change, i think we should at least change it from time battles to stock... time battles are already wrecked anyways, the self-destruct system is wrecked (i don't know if you guys know this)...

for example: let's say i hit my opponent at the very beginning of the match, promptly after, my opponent comboes me off to the side... while attempting to edgeguard me, he suicides... normally this would just result in a -1 point for him, but with the NEW system in brawl, he will still get -1 point, but I WILL GET +1 point, even though i had nothing to do with that suicide...

items are another problem all-together, especially in 1v1 because whoever gets the item first has an immediate advantage but again to repeat myself, despite my dislike for having them and my desire to have them removed, i'm not asking for them to be removed... but items + time matches = bad,  it really should be stock matches with items, or time with no items...

Time matches aren't good for a 1v1 match, so stock should be used.  Items though, you don't get an advantage unless the other person doesn't know how to use/deflect items, which is the whole point of using them in my opinion.

here are some examples:
example: pokeball

grab the pokeball, throw it straight down (most people who know how to use them would do this as it can't be caught)... you now have to dodge the pokemon + the opponent, advantage gained, and nothing could be done to stop it save instantly killing your opponent...

example 2: assist trophy

grab and use (you don't even throw this one) and the advantage is gained...

example 3: hammer/golden hammer

grab, and chase opponent, given the stage selections (battlefield, final destination), these items are lethal (especially in the hands of someone who knows how to use them) because there is no where to run...

example 4: lightning

grab, BOOM. you're small, no way to block this one, and now you get knocked away further and have less range

example 5: star (self-explanatory)

these are some examples of how items can change the battle quickly, with little to do with how well you were doing in the match prior to the grabbing of the item... if these were 4 person matches, then by all means, items would be great, but for 1v1, they create too many advantages based off luck...

i'm just explaining how items are not "fair" , i'm not saying that it is a bad/wrong thing to include them in the tournament and how they will change the tide of the matches easily (especially because the items are set on low, the rarity increases the amount of the effect it will have on the match)...

No items?

With items on low, there is a rare chance that you'll get a pokemon or a assist trophy good enough to cause a KO.  The hammer has its head fall off half the time, which is an instant kill when thrown, but the golden hammer is just ridiculous and should be turned off.  Lightining is fine to stay, as when you grab it 3 things can happen, either a) Your opponent shrinks, b) You shrink, or c) Your opponent grows (wtf).  The star should be removed, as invincibility isn't the fairest advantage.

The rules have been set.
I guess if you don't like them, you could drop out...

Yeah, we're keeping the rules how they are, and if it turns out fine then we will have the next tourny like that.  If not, then we will change them.  I'm hoping to do a tournament every month or so.

Gays use Items. Gaylords use Smash balls (Only correct if used in tournaments^^)
Oh and another thing I wanted to add :
When a Toon Link player does a combo do NOT say ''Nice'' or ''Nice one'' or ''Awesome''
Because its hella easy to own with Toon Link, hella easy im tellin ya

Every damn combo is so damn easy for Toon Link his Neutral Airial (A in the Air) is hax because it hits twice, is really strong, and really fast, AND has priority (for those who dont know the words : Priority defines the chance of the attack being canceled by another attack) and has LOTS of Range coz of the sword for Both sides (wtf so damn easy to do a combo)

Im thinkin hes gonna be banned in tournaments sooner or later (Im trusted member of the smash community.. professional in melee and stuff so I know alot about this stuff)

Theres a Tier list showcasing the best and worst characters with all possible critics for the character, in Melee there is : Top Tier (in Brawl : Toon Link and Meta Knight) , High Tier (Example : I dunno maybe Olimar and Wario), Middle Tier ( Mario, Falcon, Kirby ), Low Tier (Ganondorf probably) and last but... well LEAST Bottom Tier (very very bad Characters... maybe Ike??? I dunno)
So the List aint finished yet and they are decided by Professionals (Maybe you guys know Gimpyfish?) who participate in real Big Tournaments and discuss all Characters together

Just so you guys know some important facts^^ Im not saying ''Im better than you guys!!! HAHA'' I just had luck my friend told me lots about Pro Techniques in Melee and so I started to love smash even more and got a good place in the International Smash Community and stuff bla bla

Aha! One of the unskilled idiots that always loses with items because they're only good at button mashing!  The only thing that makes your kind good is the memorization of combos, not the actual skill in all parts of the game!  Bannination is neccesary!

I still say we should have at least Low items... :(

Youre Marth and its the Finals, you get a Smash ball since Marth is a fast character and every idiot knows that Marths Ultra Smash can kill at 0% and is very fast and easy to hit.

Ill sum up : I was thinking about the real tournaments where you win money and stuff and thats why its fatal to lose just coz the lucky opponent has a Smash Ball or a HAX Item like that Bazooka
And no items DOESNT MEAN no fun, there are several interesting combos and that awesome
(for me atleast... with Mario.. oh yeah...)
So if its just a tournament where nobody cares about who wins, and stuff coz its not really a matter of skill when Items are on...

BUT!!! If its on low then the importance of Skill and Combos increases of course.. I just think its way better without Items^^

How's this:

Instead of dedicating a day to the tourny, why not make it a "long term" kinda thing.

Have anyone who wishes to participate sign up. Then create a bracket. The two individuals who are to Brawl decide on when they can do the matches. Once they do that, they post or PM concerto stating who won; the brackets are updated. Sure, it would take longer, but atleast this way everyone gets a chance to be in it.

Super LONG TOURNEMENT BRAWL! I think that's the best way of doing it (Probably the only way) or is it?!?! :o What if We get everyones FC and then start the tournement now and use the bracket thing (Players will have to wait for there opponent or make a new bracket or something) so if one person is going somewhere (LIKE ME! XP) then the guy can wait or play other people then I'll play the less fortinate people who lost and get to the finals or something. You know kinda like that?

Yeah, the chat room was HORRIBLE because of the tournament. Eveyone kept asking questions and yelling who won, Concerto had a hard time keeping track, and it basically gave you siezures if you looked at it for too long.

The long term tourny is the only way to do it, otherwise all hell will break loose....again.

The long tourney is a terrible idea as it would take much too long, we just need to NOT meet in the chatroom, and have a better way of communicating whats going on.  We just need to organize it better.

Mabey we should take this on a larger scale...

Mabey the members who live somewhere close to eachother decide to make factions and those factions will do the a tourney and the winners of those factions could in turn fight the winners from the other ones? No? I don't know >__> (BTW I'm back)

what we need to do is make it a one-day long tourney. first you fight against someone in your time zone in the morning (PM then when you are ready and work out the exact time between yourselves). then the next match n the bracket will be as close to your time zone as possible. finals will take place in the afternoon/evening and then the winner will be decided after that.

today was kinda screwy, but we could learn what to improve upon from it.

When I say "long term" I don't mean it will take a month or something, maybe a few days at most. Just enough time for everyone to get a chance to play. This "one day" thing was working fine until the night before the tourney; we lost 4 people. (I think)

Instead of rushing through the next tourney in a matter of hours, slow down and relax.

Look at sports:

Does everybody play everybody else in one day and then determine a winner? No. They play a few matches a day until the winners of their division (or whatever) play the other winners. Well, seeing as we only have like 15-20 who would join, I don't see a need for divisions.

That's why I had to drop out...they went too fast and I had no way to communicate.
I even warmed up with The Mindzeye for a little while.

But yeah, time matches are only good for a 3 or 4 person match.  (I've gotten 10 kills one match and still lost because it was a stock match, the most somebody else had was 5 :|)

The only reason we lost so many people and it was so chaotic is because of the setup, and the little time before the tournament date.  You should set the day at least a week in advance so people have time to plan, and give us more than 1 hour for the actual tournament to go on.  Maybe an hour per round, so people have plenty of time to figure out when to do matches and stuff.

ok... looks like a missed a lot on what happened in the tourney... who won the tournament? or is it not finished?

and i also agree to the stock matches thing 100%.

Heh, nobody announced it and the bracket doesn't tell us, who knows?

Yeah, me too. I usually never have lag. Maybe once or twice, but thats been it for me.  8)

Obviously you either only play with people that are in the same city, or you're somehow lucky enough to get local matches doing random ones.

i dont even think nintendo has proper servers set up at all... cause when ive played with friends (who are in the same city mine you) and its lagged... it's lagged for all of us, not just one person like it would in most normal servers... so i think that it's like a server created by your own wii or something which is incredibly stupid...

however when it doesnt lag online it is enjoyable...

The problem is that Nintendo has terrible servers that you connect to for their online service, ones that can't stand having people across a country or a large amount of people.  And I forgot to mention that those are my speeds on a wireless connection in which the router is on another floor.  My wii is in the same room as the router, so hypothetically it should be faster.

Does anyone here even play this game online anymore?
