Title: Nintendo Medley?
Post by: Nana1Popo2 on June 08, 2011, 08:51:36 PM
So, I've actually had this idea for several years, and I need to start SOON if I plan to finish it before January of 2012. I used to have a "Queue" of songs I wanted to arange for my senior year for my High School band, but i never got a chance to start. It was a very LONG list which i know i wont get anywhere near to doing at least 1/10 of what i wanted. (However, I did get a chance to start a few; the Dr. Mario (Fever) arrangement for marching band as well as the Mortal Kombat Theme. and including a Donkey Kong Arrangement for Jazz Band) I was thinking for me senior year that I would arrange one (if not, two) Symphonic Band pieces relating to Nintendo. I've gone through ideas such as a Zelda Medley, to just doing the Hyrule Field Theme, to (now slightly inspired by Tangy) arrange a medley of songs; but if I did a medley, I'd like to play enough of the song that the section could be identified instead of jump from this to that quickly.

That being said, similar to Tangy's thread, what songs do you think would be suitable for a fairly medium-large sized arrangment?

One of my ideas, Zelda themed, was to start off, say, with the Kokiri Forest Theme from OOT, merge into another song from the game, go into the Hyrule Field Theme, maybe some Ganon or something, etc. I really liked both Hyrule Field themes from OOT and TP, and thought that the OOT version would be more recognizable for fans in my school and band.

I'm hoping to hit several different series, like Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Kirby, etc? If an overall Nintendo medley was decided.

Lastly, I was thinking of a way to feature all the seniors in my band (me included), and I thought we could maybe have a small solo section for their specific instrument? like either Solo or Soli? like, maybe trumpets for a Pokemon section, Low Brass for a Mario section, etc? But please, let me hear your thoughts and suggestions! :)

You should totally do it! I like the last idea, bring out solos/soli with instruments that really make the song that they're representing. Don't forget to make some awesome Clarinet and Oboe solos (Tangy didn't make an Oboe part and I was kinda bummed)

What you should do is do a medley like Tangy, but if you have time, arrange a full symphonic band arrangement of Hyrule Field. I'll bet it would sound EPIC!

I have plenty of arrangements already written and transcribed if you wanted them. If you needed help arranging, I could also lend a hand.

We don't have an oboe in our band at the moment (lame, I know), so there would have been no point. :( Sorry!

If I were to have only arranged one piece for band, I would have done the super mario galaxy theme. More for epicness than nostalgia. It has a quieter section in it where you could potentially put only the seniors, if you wanted.

drpamplemousse: yeah, i was thinking of doing the underwater theme from super mario bros. for a clarinet trio feature. and oboe just sparatically (although our oboist isn't a senior).

Brassman: what arrangements do you have already? I would love your help, I know you've helped me quite a bit in the past, and I have really appreciated it! :)

Tangy: yes! I was thinking of the Super Mario Galaxy Theme, too. but, again, as famous as it is, I do want some people to recognize songs, and I know that most people in my band havent played that game. But still a great thought!

You could play a few bars of the SM64 staff roll, that's pretty mellow.

Have a look at the Super Smash Bros. Melee soundtrack. Most of its songs are arranged for a wide spectrum of instruments, and they are amongst the classic epics of Nintendo. Songs such as Rainbow Ride, Fire Emblem, Fountain of Dreams, ect.

Sorry for the triple post, but as for the Pokemon section, what songs should I include? I will probably include a couple routes from various games; but what specific themes would make you the most nostalgic? There's so many to choose from!
Title: Re: Nintendo Medley?

pallet town.
Title: Re: Nintendo Medley?
Post by: Nana1Popo2 on July 13, 2011, 07:55:32 PM
Haha ok. Here's a list of some of the songs I was thinking to include: Pallet Town, Route 1, Kanto Trainer Battle, Route 42, Route 3 or 4..

any.. others? :p like, towns? or from.. Pokemon R/S/E? I was thinking [from that series specifically] the Wild Pokemon Battle, for one.

out of the town themes nothing really pops to mind as nostalgic for me. how about S.S Anne?

Which version of the S.S. Anne? which game?

the firered/leafgreen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aq3gneejUg4) version would probably work best because there's something about that's filled with tons of emotion.

hmm, you're right. I especially love the fog horn imitation around halfway through, by the bari sax. I'll keep it in mind!!

For Ruby and Sapphire, Route 119, if you can manage it. Or Littleroot Town, Sootopolis City, Fortree City...

G/S, Route 39 or 42 is good. Azalea Town is nice.
Title: Re: Nintendo Medley?
Post by: Nana1Popo2 on July 13, 2011, 08:19:46 PM
ahh, yes! Route 119 is good! I'll see what I can do haha. it does seem difficult.. to play (rather than arrange).

thank you! :)

What other series were you thinking of including in your medley? I have pleny of themes that were on the SNES console. Like, Legend of Zelda, a few Mario themes and lets not forget Super Metroid.
Title: Re: Nintendo Medley?
Post by: Nana1Popo2 on July 13, 2011, 10:28:17 PM
I was thinking of starting the Medley with the Super Mario Bros. Theme. the, classic way to start, haha. but as for series, Super Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid, Kirby, and some various others, if room. (like Donkey Kong, only because it's mainly jazz)
Title: Re: Nintendo Medley?

Donkey Kong Country is amazing in terms of music. Dave Wise is definitely one of my favorite composers.

Super Mario - I would try Dimble Woods (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2GDH31_NvE&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL) or Clash of the Titans (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtxmbrtKD3E&playnext=1&list=PL3FB2680A51DB1248) from Bowser's Inside Story, if you're looking for something different.

Zelda - probably Lon Lon Ranch, Kakariko Village from OOT would be good.

Pokemon DP - As far as relaxing pieces go, Floaroma Town (Night) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbTGox1zvxE) and Route 209 (Night) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTuJTsP0a4o) are both awesome. If you like peppy songs, try Great Marsh (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Zm2zyRk07c) or Route 210 (Day) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWBcsvFQ2Ss&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL)

Pokemon BW - Lostlorn Forest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psrvTPYsS-0&feature=related) is an interesting, different piece. Juniper Research Lab (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7sphHKqfSk&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL) is a good song, I don't know how well it would work in the medley. And of course there's my favorite, Anville Town (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMDNTiSkS6c&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL).

For the rest I can't really suggest much. :)
Title: Re: Nintendo Medley?
Post by: Nana1Popo2 on July 14, 2011, 10:18:44 AM
Brassman: I just think it would be difficult to play a jazz piece for symphonic band. I mean, i could probably put a song in there, but jazz always seems to be difficult for some reason with my band (aside from the actual jazz band)

Slow: thanks! I was also thinking of Route 209 (Midday) from DP. not just the night version :p
I probably won't put any B/W songs in though, just because of how new it is, and no one would probably recognize them compared to like.. G/S.
Title: Re: Nintendo Medley?

Quite a bit of Donkey Kong Country music isn't jazz. Just the main theme, really.

^ true.. well, perhaps I shall include something! I do LOVE Dave Wise's compositions

-what kind of arrangements do you have already? are they just for piano, or more?
Title: Re: Nintendo Medley?
Post by: Brassman388 on July 14, 2011, 11:36:36 PM
A mixture of both. I've been meaning to actually convert all my piano arrangements into Wind band arrangements.

There's this really nice version of the Aquatic Ambience that Orchestral Game Concert did that I was working on since forever. I could finish that and send it your way, if you want.

Also, I did a transcription of Stickerbrush Symphony for Vgv that I could easily convert to a Wind band arrangement if you're interested.

I guess what I'm trying to say is; I could suggest all these great pieces from that series easily. But, if you want a good understanding of what Dave Wise is about, you would have to look him up youtube or download a soundtrack of some sort.

oh, haha, don't worry-- I know Dave Wise! Like i said, I love his music!! Haha, you have no idea. I have a few soundtracks, too.

I'm more interested in the Stickerbrush Symphony more than Aquatic Ambience, though..

Any others besides Donkey Kong?
Title: Re: Nintendo Medley?
Post by: Brassman388 on July 15, 2011, 01:37:39 PM
Legend of Zelda; Link to the past, Link's Awakening, Ocarina of time, Majora's Mask, Adventure of Link. Top Gear, Super Metroid, Those old Kirby Airride arrangements I did wayyy back. Starfox, Starfox 64. I've also been working on a few Killer Instinct pieces. Oh oh oh and lets not forget Megaman X! A few Dragon Quest pieces that I also want to work on. Needless to say that Dragon Quest is da bomb.

I was also thinking that since Final Fantasy 3/6 was released on the SNES, we could probably get away with putting it in the medley? Up to you, I love the music from there also.

And, as much as I don't like Mario, I'm pretty sure I would be a good to include some Mario RPG. JUST for the music.
Title: Re: Nintendo Medley?
Post by: Nana1Popo2 on July 15, 2011, 01:43:40 PM
Cool!! I loved those Airride arrangements, btw..
hmm, I don't know where to start. How about, as far as OOT and Kirby songs, are any of them in a "wind" arrangement (as you called it)?

I'm not too sure about Final Fantasy, I have actually never played it. But I know the music is supposed to be phenomenal! So, I might leave that aside for now..

And there was one song from Mario RPG, that I really liked, and plan on putting it in, but i dont remember. I think it was "Beware of the Forest's Mushrooms" ? or something like that.
EDIT: NOPE. That is from the Legend of the Seven Stars... haha. well there IS a piece from RPG i want to include.

well that's the most OBVIOUS choice from super mario rpg and the one that would get the most "ZOMG THAT SONG!!" reactions but might I recommend  the battle theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8dWYAqonus&feature=related), bandit's way (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yz9yyjy5lxY&feature=related), tadpole pond (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuFKssyYZIQ&feature=related),Mallow finds out he's not a tadpole (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_orf0q1xOzs&feature=related) mushroom kingdom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWXhD4-_GDY&feature=related) or if you're insane mole mountain railroad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-Sq1JAJT5o&feature=related)

Aren't RPG and Seven Stars the same thing?

Also, you're in luck. That one is already done. Yeah, really, It's already done for wind band. A colleague of mine arranged that piece for our band. Sooooo, yeah.

Yeahh, I was JUST about to post that, haha. that it was the same thing. I didn't know. I've never played it haha.

Shado: hmm, considering I've only really heard the Forest Maze Theme (because of the SSBB soundtracks with the rejected songs), I might just stick with that one for now.

Brassman: what song are you referring to, the Stickerbrush Symphony one or the Mario RPG?

That's pretty cool. I had the opportunity to play Bassoon once my junior year of high school. My fellow Euphonium mate took it first, leaving me the Oboe. Which, god forbid, any of you have to learn how to play or even listen to. Keep in mind that I'm originally a Tuba player, so, let your imagination do the work...

Long story short, my ears bled everyday for a whole semester.

I can see it.

I'm an Oboe player, but I am coming from single reeds, so it's not super hard/annoying for me (cause im already used to woodwind epicness). people wanted me to play Euphonium or Fr Horn, and I tried and epic failed, so im sticking to what I know best.

Also, COPIUS AMOUNTS OF CLARINET!

That is all!

Ok, I need help...

I was planning on arranging Windfall Island next, but it sounds cruddy without an actual guitar.. so I'm chucking it. instead, I'm moving on to an idea I was hoping to use later; which is go into the Second Maritime Battle.

Soo, I'm doing that. but I'm still a little unsure of the beginning. Mainly just finding the right pitches of the timpani (I'm assuming it is one, if not, I'm making it one.. ). I have right now the pitches being Eb-Eb-Bb (played four times). Care to help me out?

I was wrong about the timpani intro. It started as an Db to an Ab. Try it. As far as key sigs, I don't think they're are any. Time sigs, that's a whole nother story.

THIS SONG IS JUST ONE BIG MESS!!!!!!!!!

I've been working on it almost alllll day.

As for the timpani part, I thought it sounded a bit closer to the original.

NOW I'M DONE.

Seriously, I am.

Here ya go. (http://www.mediafire.com/?0l8riq0j813dkac)

All I really focused on was the balance and making sure everything was nice and neat. The note durations and accuracy of the chords were correct. The balance of said chords were executed an almost perfect manner. All it really needed was some more voices and for parts to be brought out and meters to be changed. This was, of course, after I rewritten the entire section, which, I didn't like.

ok! Nice!!
it does sound pretty awesome! which is a big plus!
The only thing I don't like.. is idk what the hell the time signature is.. haha. and how to count the rhythms on top of it. for my band's purposes I think I am just going to stick with 4/4 for it. Because I know for sure no one is going to get it.. :/

But thanks a bunch, it does sound better! But why did you change the volumes of each instrument? was it for balance purposes? I try to use dynamics for that.. but that's probably not a great idea..

Well, thank you AGAIN. It has helped a lot :) and it does sound pretty rad, don't get me wrong haha. Hopefully you can help me with other stuffs later on, too! If you wouldn't mind...

How can I do a suspended cymbal roll?.. on Finale 2011? If anyone happens to know.

and Brass: in measure 139 of your revision, is the timpani part supposed to be different than the beginning? or the same.
because you have it as what I had before, the Eb-Eb-Bb. when maybe it should be the Db-Db-Ab that you told me about? also, are the timpani hits that are just by itself (for example, measure 140 or 141, etc) supposed to be Bb? or should it be Ab?

I believe you would use the tremolo articulation.

hmm, I knew that.. but it didn't work for me before until now for some reason...

isn't there a specific playback for sus. cymbals, though? :o oh well, this is good for now.

That section where the timpani comes in for a second time does not need to be changed.
