Title: Good GameCube games
Post by: Nitro Indigo on April 26, 2016, 12:58:41 PM
I sort of want to start playing GameCube games, which will require me buying a controller and a memory card (I already have a Wii). Of course, it's not set in stone that I will buy those, because I can't afford them, but if I buy them, what games should I get? Bear in mind that GameCube stuff is crazy expensive (The Thousand-Year Door costs more than a PlayStation 2 from Cex), so I won't be able to afford all the stuff everyone likes. Also, I already own the other-console versions of The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.

I'm not old enough to play Metal Gear, and Pikmin 1 is on Wii, so that's a thing.

There's this game called Enter the Dragonfly, which I have a long and complicated history with. Long story short, I had it on PS2 a couple of years ago, discovered everyone hated it after a few days, never played it again, and now I stay as far away from the Spyro fandom as possible. I've heard the GameCube version of it is better, but it costs at least twice as much (but still significantly cheaper than most GameCube games), and I'm not sure if it'd be worth it. I just want to finish something I started, but should I? =/

First thing you should do, is consider either buying your games online (eBay for example) or maybe even renting through something like gamefly. My local retro shop retails a used SSBM for $140 given they even have it (last I checked the waiting line was 8 copies long). GameCube stuff is expensive if you don't know where to look; so be savvy.

Anyways, I have many fun memories of Spiderman 2. I also used to have a long long time with the Tony Hawk series. Also, look up 1080* Avalanche. That's another good one.

Oh and I'm surprised nobody's said Zelda: Wind Waker yet. That said, if you have the WiiU version, it's not worth the money it would take to get it.

Crazy Taxi
Animal Crossing
Backyard [Sport]
Star Fox: Assault

Animal Crossing is surprisngly cheap for a GameCube game; about £20 from Amazon, which is about as much as a new DS game was back in the day. I'm too used to the newer games, though. =/ The title theme does make me feel nostalgic for someone else's childhood, mind.

Also, $140 for Meele? Cex sells it for £30.

Mario Party 6

These are pretty much most of the gamecube games that I (and my brothers) have that haven't already been mentioned. There's a variety in case you're not into some of them

Soul Calibur 2 is really great. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is OK imo, a lot of people love, I think it's mediocre.

Never played a Crash game. Watched a few Caddicarus videos about some spinoffs, though.

Well, I'll be scouring the GameCube sections of Amazon and Cex tomorrow, seeing what prices all these games are. When I think of GameCube, I immediately think of the stuff Chugga's played; I never knew there was so much more that people liked. And Enter the Dragonfly.

Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness is a must-have if you like Pokemon games.
Not sure if you're into Sonic games or not, but if you are, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 are both great (1's not for everyone but I absolutely adore it). Collections like Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Gems Collection are also amazing if you like the franchise. Sonic Riders is super fun too.
I have fond memories of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Starfox Adventures, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, and Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg to name a few.
If you play with friends a lot, Cel Damage, any Mario Party (6 was my favorite), Super Mario Strikers, etc. are all great for that.
Those are my recommendations for now. I purposefully left out most of what others said previously.

It would be worth investing in the GCN version, I can assure you. It's quality is far better.

Lol I mean, it was definitely different than the usual StarFox genre, but as a game in and of itself, I thought it was alright.

Luigi's Mansion is my favorite GameCube game.

Let's see... for starters, I need to make a list of things that interest me. All of the prices are from Cex.
Wired controller: £15 (cheaper than I remember...)
3rd-party memory card: £1.50
The Thousand-Year Door: £50 (why is this not under Keep Circulating the Tapes on TV Tropes?!)
Enter the Dragonfly*: £8 (exactly twice as much as it was on PS2, and it has a four-star rating for some reason...?)
Pikmin 1: £8
Animal Crossing with memory card (apparently) - £25

After looking through their entire GameCube catalogue, I discovered that most of their (second-hand) stock is licensed games. The actual first and second-party games are really expensive (Path of Radiance is £100), with a few exceptions, such as the aforementioned Pikmin. According to TV Tropes, Pikmin 1 on GameCube is really rare and expensive...?
If I'd known that A New Beginning was on GameCube, I wouldn't have re-brought a PS2 just to play it after seeing it mentioned on TV Tropes a few times.

*I know most people don't think highly of this game, but I once read that they fixed the game when they ported it to GameCube. I'm not sure how true that is, but I kind of want to finish something I started, though not as soon as possible.

I think I found the best game title ever. (https://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=4005209069205)

PS: Why aren't GameCube games on Wii U VC yet? Is it because of ~compatibility issues~? *cough*GBA games on 3DS*cough*

Wario confirmed for Lorule counterpart of Mario. =P

I went to Cex today to sell my PS2, when I noticed they had a bunch of "new" GameCube games. There was multiple copies of Mario Parties 4, 5 and Double Dash, one copy of The Wind Waker (which I already have on Wii U, but still), and... Enter the Dragonfly?

From my calculations, I have £23.10 to spend on CubeGames from Cex. ETD is £8, which gives me £15.10 left if I get it. So no TTYD or XD.

Pikmin and Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly. The latter you might have guessed because I've been talking about it a lot all over the internet, including on this very thread, but I've barely said anything about the former.

The memory card has no metal in it, so I'm going to have to leave my Wii on while playing Pikmin, just like when I had my second PS2 and accidentally got a PS1 card. At least Wiis are a lot smaller and less noisy than PS2 phats...
