Title: Call for potential new site art!
Post by: Latios212 on March 23, 2020, 08:46:47 PM
Hello everyone!

A while back I put up a notice (https://www.ninsheetmusic.org/forum/index.php?topic=10647.0) saying that we'd soon be seeking out new art for the site (sorry, time really flies!). While the current banner has served us well for almost ten years (https://www.ninsheetmusic.org/forum/index.php?topic=2114.0) now, it may be time for a visual refresh. Now that the new design has rolled out and everyone has had a chance to give it a feel, the time has come to open the floor up to submissions!

What we are looking for is:
- A banner! This must be responsive so as to fit different screen sizes and ratios.
- A logo! This must be in SVG format in order to scale well.
- Anything else will be taken into consideration but not necessarily used.

Submissions will be open for one month from this post, with potential for extension if deemed necessary. As a disclaimer, we may or may not end up picking a winner if it is determined the options don't suit the site, and we may need to follow up to iterate on the art before a final decision is reached.

Any questions, please do ask.

Hi folks!

This is my first post on the forum, but my millionth visit; I've enjoyed the amazing sheet music on here for my mediocre piano playing for a few years now.
That's why I'd really like to give back, in this way (Well, once I tried transcribing a waltz from Dragon Quest IX - pure catastrophe!).

I like drawing and painting a lot, if you want to look through some of my work, I have a digital sketchbook on a similarly charming and homely web forum: It's here. (http://www.sycra.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=100631&start=108) (Obviously we love visitors :)
That said, in all my drawing experience there isn't much at all when it comes to vector graphics, I would have to see how well I can deal with something that's neither paper not pixels.

Now, I did draw a little thing up to be developed further - I can't seem to find the image upload function though.

As for the technical stuff:
Quote from: Advos on March 25, 2020, 11:14:21 AMWhat are the dimensions for the banner

The classic banner we all love has dimensions 940x200, the website cuts the bottom part off to dimensions 940x153 and then to 940x54 depending on screen width - as far as I can tell that is.

I wonder if there could be a toggle button for old and new version...

Anyways, have a great day!

You can just put a link to the image hosted somewhere else via

Now there's an idea...

Quote from: Advos on March 25, 2020, 11:14:21 AMWhat are the dimensions for the banner
I'll check with Deku what we're looking for, but it looks like fi_le put the current dimens above

Edit: It doesn't have to be a specific size so long as it would look good on multiple screen resolutions.

Alrighty, I'll try to come up with something cool the next few days.

As for the logo, are you looking for something that fits into a circle (/ square)?

OK, I've got something! The idea was to populate a piece of sheet music with Nintendo characters that are actually small enough to fit, so there we have a red pikmin and Minish Cap link roaming around in an arrangement from this site. (Bonus Quiz: Which arrangement?)

Due to larger image size I opted for a different upload method this time, hope it works...

If someone has a really good idea for another little guy to get into there, I might be able to add them (Depending on both free time and drawing ability :^)

Edit: Oh, right, I forgot to mention some technical stuff - The background color should be the same as the bottom part of the website, namely #F1F7F9
The banner currently has its own background color, #B1C6D6, but I think my dimensions of 2000x200 should cover that. I'd recommend changing the banner backgroud to the lighter one and cropping the image though since it takes a bit of load time off. Hope that was intelligible!

Edit 2: Also, I wanted to see how it looks in context, so here:

Ahh that's adorable! If I had to make a suggestion, I'd give a character from Mario/Pokémon a chance in the spotlight too as they're (along with Zelda) the most represented series on the main site.

Anyway, I'm going to keep a running list of participants in the original post, while we figure out what to do with the submissions - I very much like the idea of utilizing them all as different themes or through some other means ^^

For the rest of you, if you haven't already, please post if you're interested and planning on submitting something as well!

Sure thing. My main idea for Pokémon was Shaymin; I looked through a list sorted by size and all the really small ones were from the very recent generations. (And I really like Shaymin Land Forme of course.)

For Mario, well, why am I explaining anyways, here's the updated version:

the issue with seasonal banners is that it requires a lot of art and right now we don't have any. Actually getting a nice and polished piece of art is the top priority right now.

Hi again!
Quote from: KC Symphony on April 23, 2020, 02:41:54 AMHere it is! It's just a rough, but I thought it was far enough along to give an idea of what I'm going for with it. I tried pairing it with the art made by fi_le to show how it works with their idea, and I think it could turn out really cool! I have some rough designs for logos as well if people enjoy this style. Let me know what you guys think, thanks!

Yes, I like it a lot! (But it's not without problems, I think.) This would have to rendered as well; I fear that the details might become a little hard to make out, there is a lot going on not that many pixels. As I see it, the grand piano is currently see-through, which makes it a bit easier to see that Luigi is playing. How would that look like in a final version? Also, I'm not sure how the notes and the foot of the piano reaching out of the banner would work.

Again though, it's really cool and I'd also be interested in how you would design the whole banner! The idea of Nintendo characters playing instruments is a classic and it reminds me of the cover for the literal gold that is Turnabout Jazz Soul (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCOuGrLtsoU&list=PLB5AA86E712C3A6B5).
Oh, and can you show the logo ideas?

Seconded! Again, if my banner ends up as the one then I'll surely find time to come up with some more stuff. Until then, I'll fix my poor broken drawing tablet :(

Long-time lurker here, hey.
If you're still looking for small characters, would a Chao fit? Also, Kirby is canonically only eight inches tall, so maybe him?

Thank you! Honestly these all look awesome to me and I really like them. The color scheme and little details for various series are great :D

I've compiled the image files provided so far into a folder here. Please let me know if anything is missing or needs to be updated: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/wos6a98tgglutyf/AAAdRFtf54wx8hr-ETROQj2sa?dl=0 (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/wos6a98tgglutyf/AAAdRFtf54wx8hr-ETROQj2sa?dl=0)

Now, a question for everyone!

What do you all think we should do with these submissions? I had originally thought of doing a voting contest with the winner having their art being officially used across the site and social media, but I feel like having just one winner does everyone a disservice since we have a number of great submissions! I really do like the earlier proposed idea that we could have the banner be selected by each user (possibly being stored in a cookie for the browser like the sheet sorting order) - that way they can all be used (pending work from the code monkeys to implement it). That said, there would still need to be a default banner for new users, as well as a single logo used for our social media accounts.

Thoughts?

We could rotate through each of these for the main banner every month? Or, alternatively, with every update (which would probably average to around once a month).

Dunno about the feasibility of this, but could all the banners be compiled into a gif that cycles through each of them as the default? That way new users can see all of them and also we don't have to choose which one gets to be featured.

I think that'd be disorientating if it was just a sudden transition. I'm thinking a bit more like the news on the forums. Or I guess some sort of fancy html(number here) that goes through them by fancifully sliding them with a "stop" button or something.

This is just my personal opinion, but I think I like fi_le banner as the default theme, with SirBone logo as the logo, but I also really love KC Symphony banner 1 and think it could be used for a "NSM Night" theme of some sort.

Alright, thanks KC Symphony and Advos for providing the updated art! I've updated the files in the Dropbox folder. And thanks to Maelstrom, mastersuperfan, Dudeman, and BlackDragonSlayer for your input too.

It looks like for the banner, we want to have some sort of rotation or configuration system because we have great options and it's not something we need to keep the same all the time. I'll check with our code monkeys on what we can do about that so stay tuned and hopefully we'll have something to show within a couple weeks! (Those of you who submitted something, will let you know if there's a problem with the image sizing/cropping/etc.)

On the other hand, generally the usage of a logo is something that doesn't change. The main places I am thinking of for logo use are:
- Favicon (for your browser tab) - this will need to be an extremely scaled-down image
- Social media accounts - Discord server logo, Youtube, Facebook, and Twitter profile pictures, maybe something else I'm forgetting
- T-shirts! Maybe! Will need to work out some more logistics before that becomes a reality :P

Sorry for not making this distinction clear earlier, as that changes some details about its usage. Something clearer when small will make more sense for the favicon, medium for a small profile pic, and potentially a large one for a shirt.

Thing is, though, these don't all have to be the same logo, even though they can be! (Our current favicon isn't pulled from our banner like the rest of our profile images are.) I think we do need to decide what logo will be used for which use case - they can be the same or not. So, for those of you who submitted a logo - could you say what case(s) you'd like your logo to be considered for? If possible, a shrunken file would be nice for a favicon so we can see what it'd potentially look like.

And, of course, everyone else please let me know if what I'm saying is making any sense :)

Quote from: KC Symphony on May 04, 2020, 08:32:04 PMHere's a little board I threw together to show how the logo could be used! The current banner has the logo right on top of it, so instead of trying to crop out the logo and replace it with mine awkwardly, I just swapped in one of my banners. I tried experimenting with removing the text as well, but of course any suggestions for changes could be implemented easily so let me know your thoughts!

Yeah I like this one a lot, it stands out just enough when its small (and looks like a good logo based on what I remember from my design classes lol)

Alright, having gone through all of them here are my thoughts, which are all contingent on there artwork being properly scaled for the multiple formats we'd need them to be:

Advos
Logo: I like the idea of the design, but I can't immediately tell what it is at a glance. On the surface it just looks like a keyboard and doesn't scan as "NSM". If someone like me can't tell what it says right away, newer or even frequent guests might not be able to either.

fi_le
Banner: I like this one, it has a warm feel to it and the potential for variation using different characters and music as the background. That said it's a little busy and the site name is scrunched into the top right corner when it really should be the primary feature.

KC Symphony
Banner 1: This one is fun, possibly a good choice for a night-mode banner, but the lack of the site name really hinders its effectiveness. It's difficult to imagine having the name without sacrificing the overall cohesion of the piece. I do like all of the details, however, but given the scale needs to be variable, I'm not sure how visible or clear they'll be on some screens.

Banners 2-5: This one is much more on brand with the piano front and center, which makes up for the lack of site name. The alternate backgrounds would be nice to cycle through, and I especially like the Super Mario inspired one, but that may be my personal bias.

Banner 6: This one is cute, but unless you know what the site is you'd have no idea what the characters are doing or looking at. Sure you have conductor Kirby off the the side and some music notes around, but they seem incidental and if you're looking at this with no knowledge of what NSM is then you're likely not going to figure it out based on the banner alone.

Logo 1-3: This are super neat, and I appreciate the variations so would could play with them to see which pop better on different backgrounds, or perhaps that's to recreate the flashing effect. The throwback to the NES era with the Super Mario Bros inspired font is a great touch and the folder icon seems like it can be utilized for a number of things. That said the way its organized seems a little bulky, perhaps we could separate the elements for different uses.

Sir Bone
Banner 1: This one is hard to look at because the colors seem haphazard and just garish.

Banner 2: Now this one is cool. I like the minimalist/post-modern design of the characters, is makes the banner pop more and you could spend a minute or two just looking at it to figure out who's represented there. Personally I'd like to see a version of it without the site name to see the details behind it, but as it is this is probably may favorite of the submissions.

Logo: This logo is alright, but it doesn't have any personality. It just feels so bland, especially compared to your banner art.

With the above commentary, I think I'd prefer Sir Bone's second banner with KC Symphony's Logos together. To my eye they flow well together with a little editing to match the fonts and other details. That said we can always trial them and let the public vote on them each.

Really good stuff everyone, I especially like the night sky design :)

Just a brief note on colours: That bright red of KC's logo on the website's dark blue is pretty spicy. In general it's probably good to stick a little closer to the site's palette with the logo.

Also, a vote sounds exiting, let's do it!

Quote from: KC Symphony on May 05, 2020, 03:51:03 PMCan do! Here are the updated colors! The first one is the color of the text on NinSheetMusic's homepage, the second one is the exact color of Nintendo's logo, and the third is the original. I've laid them out on the board below, and I'm including the full PNG's below as well.

Yeah I prefer the 2nd logo. Might as well use Nintendo's exact colours lol. The first is too saturated, and the last looks too dull

Thanks for providing updated artwork! I've updated the Dropbox with the new files and updated the OP with what's being considered for what. I think I have it all straight, though not sure if SirBone is going to try downsizing for a favicon.

Lemme know if there are any concerns!

Just popping in to mention that NSM does not always mean ninsheetmusic. It is more commonly used to refer to the national Socialist Movement, which, according to wikipedia, is a "neo-Nazi organization" and is classified as a hate group which I'm pretty sure we don't want to be associated with. The current logo and the current site don't use the acronym NSM at all. I realize that NSM is a heck of a lot easier to fit in a logo, but it should be unquestionably not related to that organization.

Ah yes you're very right... that had slipped my mind.

Advos and SirBone, do you think you may be able to make adjustments to the logo as such? Apologies for not remembering this earlier?

I mean, given the musical imagery in the logos, I doubt it'll be a problem. In all the situations the logos would be used, I'd imagine it would be pretty easy to tell what it means from the context. Worth noting is that the current favicon uses "NSM" and a piano.

That's also very fair. I don't think it's likely to be mistaken.

How would we feel if we simply tacked on "NinSheetMusic" under a NSM logo? I don't think anyone would bat an eye on that, but curious to see what others think.

Alright, I getcha. If just a couple of people right now are uncomfortable as is then it's probably best to steer clear if possible.

Thanks KC Symphony for the updated logos! That leaves Advos and SirBone's. I'll talk to SirBone to see if we can adjust it so that it doesn't say NSM.

For Advos's logo, how would we feel about keeping that in the running? It's not the most apparent that it does actually say NSM, and the look of it strongly implies that the logo is getting at something else.

I like the color palette, you've chosen here. The bright red on the oval-outlined "NinSheetMusic" is very Nintendo-esque, and the slightly darker red and blue background behind the keyboard helps to contrast with that. I also appreciate the clever application of the rule of thirds to make space for the keyboard and the text.

Okay everyone! It's time to start voting! Voting will be open for two weeks from the time of this post.

Here's how to vote. For each category, rank all of the options from your most to least favorite. Refer to the bottom of this post for what the available options are.

Then send me a direct message via the forums or Discord (Latios#8855) with the following template filled out:

After two weeks are up, we'll count up the votes using the same methodology as in our last arrangement project (https://www.ninsheetmusic.org/forum/index.php?topic=11098.msg416553#msg416553) (except everyone's votes count equally now) and announce the results shortly after. The art will be uploaded to the site whenever the code monkeys have a chance.

These contain the submissions from users in this thread, plus the existing ones we are using today.

Please note:
- Variations on one piece of art are counted together for the purposes of this and are shown in one file in the folder. If we end up using one of those after voting is over, we'll figure out which variation to use and how later.
- While there is support for the idea of a configurable or rotating banner incorporating multiple of the submissions here, such a feature has not been implemented yet and may be done at a later date depending on the availability of the code monkeys. For the short term just one banner will be used.
