Who do you think is the best Video game composer?
Option 1: Koji Kondo
votes: 36
Option 2: Nobuo Uematsu
votes: 12
Option 3: Grant Kirkhope
votes: 5
Option 4: somebody else
votes: 9
well I vote for Koji Kondo, but I want to see what other people think.
I'll have to go with Koji because although Nobuo is awesome too, Koji just has so many iconic songs. Mario thme, zelda overworld, and the list goes on. So I have to go with Kondo. (Kirkhope is cool too, but Kondo has done more games)
Kondo is greatly known for hs iconic themes, but Nobou, for his great orchestrations. I'd have to go with Nobuo on this one, though Kondo is a close second. Can't say I've heard of the other two though :-\
Grant Kirkhope does the music for rare games, like B-K, DK64 and the like. The other guy I haven't heard of either, and I think Jake just saw him high up on somebody's top ten of best video game composers and included him.
Kondo Ftw.
The fact that I only recognize one of them is a tribute to his greatness.
Kondo forevur!
Can somebody tell me for which game Nobuo and Hideki composed music??
Quote from: FallenPianist on August 20, 2008, 06:20:53 AMCan somebody tell me for which game Nobuo and Hideki composed music??
I have to go with Uematsu on my vote. And I don't know about Hideki, but Uematsu has done some of the most amazing video game music of all time....some of his games are...
Final Fantasy I
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus (I think)
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy X
Blue Dragon
Lost Odyssey
He also composed the Brawl Main Theme and a LOT more games.
Kondo is only decent. Kirkhope and Uematsu kick his ass. Yatsume or whoever it is that does Castlevania is also massive win.
Hideki's the guy that did the Sonic Rush music. Also, ever heard of Jet Set Radio/Jet Grind Radio? He did that too.
...then why would he even be on the list. Neither game had any noticeably good music.
Okay, I deleted that other guy, because I don't even know who he is and barely does anybody else
i would probaly say koji kondo.. with hip tanaka following closely behind.. also that i don't know many others =P
Nobuo is the best in my opinion
Yoko Shimomura (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoko_Shimomura#Video_game_soundtracks_.28incomplete.29) is one of my faves, so other.
Quote from: Playgame38 on August 21, 2008, 07:23:26 AMYoko Shimomura (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoko_Shimomura#Video_game_soundtracks_.28incomplete.29) is one of my faves, so other.
Thank you!, I love Shimomura. Especially her work on Kingdom Hearts. (I have the full 9 cd boxset.) Her work on Mana and on Mario RPG was amazing as well.
Yeah, Yoko's way up there for me too. For the same soundtracks mentioned above.
I'm also a fan of Yuka Tsujiyoko, for the Fire Emblem tracks especially. FE7 in particular has epic battle music, Idoun's theme from FE6 is one of my faves, and of course there's the main theme. I'm also kind of a fan her Paper Mario songs too.
Besides that, Dave Wise was cool too for DKC music.

And we can't forget Matoi Sakuraba! His work on the tales series is phenominal. And the Eternal Sonata soundtrack ^_________^ It's AMAZING!
Either ZUN or Nobuo

Motoi sakuraba composes great stuff... but it's generally of the same style and the pieces often even sound very similar, you can recognize his work easily, and even though it's good...
i bet that kondo will be, like he has, to continue to be the most iconic video game composer, he makes catchy tunes, but not always the
best quality music.... but if i had to choose from that group, i'd say Uematsu is the best composer...

I thought I spelled his name wrong...Like you say, Kondo is a master and composing recognizable, catchy tunes, but it usually stays at that. HOWEVER, Kondo does write an amazing song every once in a while.
I must request that Yasunori Mitsuda be added to the list. Chrono Trigger had beautiful stuff, but because he's not there and i dont think that "Other" is descriptive enough, i'll go with Nobuo.
I liked Masato Nakamura (first sonic series) and Grant Kirkhope, but none has ever beat Kondo. I love the Mario and Zelda themes ;D
Dave Wise ftw (donkey kong country)
I gotta go for Kondo, his work on galaxy was IMMENSE
Kenji Yamamoto did good work on Super Metroid and the Prime series.
okay, well, how can u not vote koji kondo- he created the mario theme!!! thats like one of the most known songs ever!!!(and 1 of the best songs ever)
I personally love Jun Ishikawa's work on songs for Kirby. But when it comes to the greatest not even he comes to the Kondo standard.
Quote from: HungryDragon on August 19, 2008, 09:21:28 PMKondo is greatly known for hs iconic themes, but Nobou, for his great orchestrations. I'd have to go with Nobuo on this one, though Kondo is a close second. Can't say I've heard of the other two though :-\
I think exactly the same. I voted for Nobou Uematsu.
Koji Kondo its best of all. This guy is so amazing. Hes creating Songs for 30 years and he nver looses his imagination. Incredible... Thanks to him, Ill make my music carrer
Kondo has great songs in Zelda.
Quote from: Tranzlater on September 04, 2008, 09:24:10 AMI gotta go for Kondo, his work on galaxy was IMMENSE

kondo only composed i think 4 songs for galaxy, the only one that i know for sure is good egg galaxy and i think the observatory music... other than his remixed songs...
the majority of music in galaxy was done by Mahito Yokota though...
Quote from: Tranzlater on September 04, 2008, 09:24:10 AMKenji Yamamoto did good work on Super Metroid and the Prime series.
I loved Yamamoto's work in Metroid. He should be on here.
It's a bit hard to say-- they all have their ups and downs. Koji Kondo's songs are catchy, but repetitive. Nobuo's are long, and classic-- but a bit boring. Kirkhope's songs are often weird, but they're catchy too.
Are you asking for favorite, or best? My favorite is probably Kondo... I like Kirkhope though.
i have to go with koji kondo he is my idol one of the best composers and noone on the entire earth has recognised his big talent except for Nintendo Koji you are the best!!! grant kirkhope is good too, but everything he writes is nearly the same. this is only my opinion and i think a lot of people wont share it
Dave Wise deserves to be on the list. Not only was his Donkey Kong stuff really good, but so was his work for the Star Fox series. We are forgetting a few people though. Like Masashi Hamauzu (Took over Final Fantasy after Uematsu left Square) and Kumi Tanioka (Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series)
Well...there's a lot of talent out there...I love Kenichi Suzuki who did Earthbound music...his songs are usually very relaxing or straight up bizarre...the awesome kind. Kondo is a legend and Grant Kirkhope has really been up and coming.
I chose Nobuo, because his compositions have more feeling to them, and have more of a cinematic feel...I could use nobuo's work almost anywhere.
Two words:
Dancing Mad.

Hmmm....I guess you're right.
I'm just messin man...it's all cool.
I think Koji Kondo is the best gamecomposer, because he has written so many pieces and there's so iconic, as mentioned before, but I think Kenta Nagata (I only know him from the Wind Waker) and Tsukasa Tawada (a personal favorite) are my faves. I love Tawada's piano/purple organ solos in the Pokémon games ;)
Haven't heard much of the pokemon series..i'll be sure to go and check out some of them.
Well, I must admit it wouldn't be the first music I would be attracted to because no offence, but ppl think Pokémon is for little children, but I still like the music. I hadn't heard from Tsukasa Tawada before. First one I knew was Koji Kondo. Be sure to check out Cipher Lab which I arranged, it's really cool (the song, not my arrangement).
I don't think that it's for kids too much, I remember some of the music from SSBM and i thought that poke floats had an amazing bass line. If i could get a link for some of the more recent works, then i could form a more...informed opinion...ya know?
Koji Kondo- His earlier work was fantastic, but he's kind of losing it these days.
Nobuo Uematsu- Like Kondo his earlier work is awesome, it seems that you can only get the full effect of each piece if you've played that game enough, so in that case, I don't fully care for the music after ff6, except for a select few.
Martin O' Donnell- Has some really epic orchestral scores and can really compose to fit a mood.
it's a really tough decision but for now i'll choose Nobuo uematsu as the best vg composer. we'll see what the future holds.
Ko-ji! Ko-ji! Ko-ji!
Koji Kondo is hands-down THE best composer.
*Gets SMB Theme stuck in head, nothing unusual...*
I repeat, Dancing Mad. There is simply nothing that can compare.

except for the fact that all the orchestrated versions of dancing mad i've heard were complete shit.
Just wait till I get to college, then I'll make an arrangement that'll be notable. Just wait. ;D
Shado: Black Mages Dancing Mad
FUCK YEA.
black mages blow ass
Not all of them, you should listen to their first album. That one is truly thier greatest.
Shado: Boo to you.
Now that I think about it, ZUN has to be put up there as one of the greatest composers ever.
Who's ZUN?
Hip did a few good ones... EB, Mother and Metroid... but that's about it.
Now he owns a freakish company and composes for Pokémon- the animated series (shudders)
man, i really need to learn more vg composers. -sigh-
solution: play for video games.
Nobuo all the way.
I haven't heard much nobou... I only have FF12 and that's not composed by Nobou... right?
Yeah, that was his last one, and he didn't even do all of the songs, he was mostly a supervisor.

that was composed by sakimoto (the guy who did final fantasy tactics series music and some other stuff i can't remember)... i think nobuo only really got credit in that game b/c an arrangement of the final fantasy theme was used and battle of the big bridge (i think*)... but only arrangements of previous compositions of his were used as far as i know, sakimoto composed all the new stuff...

I still stand by Dave Wise as my favourite
*cough cough revive*
I personally liked Grant Kirkhopes music. He had a nice style of composing imo.

Dave Wise is good. Especially his Donkey Kong stuff.
Shogo Sakai, fantastic stuff in Mother 3.
KOJI KONDO
I vote for other. To me Yuka Tsujiyoko is the best (fire emblem music). Koji Kondo is my second but because of Star Fox music.
Quote from: Dalonzo on August 03, 2009, 07:20:35 PMStar Fox music.

Really? I didn't play the SNES one. But the music is different right? Snes and 64 have different music right? (unlike most Star Fox games, that have the same songs with other arrangements).
My favorites have to be Nobuo Uematsu, Yasunori Mitsuda and Yoko Shimomura.

Yeah, it's completely different. I didn't like the way that Koji just recycled for other Starfox games, that bugs the crap out of me. Yoshie Arakawa did an excellent job on orchestrating Koji's version. You should check that out too, or just play Starfox Assault.
I vote for Motoi Sakuraba. Listen to his music and guess why I've chosen him.
-Eternal Sonata - Pyroxene of the Heart (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7o7hWL8-lCY)
-Baten Kaitos - To the End of the Journey of Glittering Stars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XARPxxfAeUc)
;)
@Brassman:
Actually for like a week I've been listening to Assault music. I've never played Star Fox games, and yet I love the music.
Then you'll need to check Hajime Hirasawa then. His stuff is good, it's bit 90's-ish though, not sure if you'll like that or not. Just a word of advice.
Tsukasa Tawada, Go Ichinose (Pokémon), Koji Kondo, Kenta Nagata (Zelda) and some others.
I've only heard of Hajime doing Starfox...
I don't listen to enough video game music to really say, but out those it's a tie between Kondo and Uematsu. KK has the iconic classic themes for so many smash hit games and they have more of an 8-bit, simple sound to them, whereas NU has a very orchestral, symphonic sound, much more like a film score than a happy-go-lucky video game.
Really I love both of them, along with Yasunori Mitsuda and Motoi Sakuraba.

I'm not sure who did Adventures.
Dave Wise did Adventures.
My faves are:
• Nobuo Uematsu
• Koji Kondo
• Dave Wise
• Jun Chikuma
For those wondering who Jun Chikuma is, she composed most of the Bomberman series music. The only reason she's there is because of the Bomberman Tournament Score, which is epically awesome. I arrange those songs. ;D
My 3 favorite composers from 1st to 3rd are:
- Koji Kondo
- Jun Ishikawa(Composed many songs for Kirby)
