1) Did you know 2000 left-handed people die worldwide every year because they use stuff meant for right-handed people in a wrong way?
2) Did you know that Japanese has 3 alphabets? And that one consists of a variation of Chinese characters?
3) Did you know that a Greek verb has more than 1000 forms in conjugation in theory?
4) Did you know I can all recognize them? (*boost boost*)
5) Did you know Dutch people are the tallest people in the world?
6) Did you know Dutch is a difficult language, because of the difficult rules. E.g.:
Singular and plural is mixed with expressions of time, for no reason. Translated it is like this:
nine minutes
nine hour (singular where it should be plural?!)
nine days
nine months
nine year (same for year)

Did you know that Disney World in Florida in reality is two stories tall? The entire park is built one story above the natural ground. This is because it is so swampy there, but has another reason as well. Workers in costumes can go from the wardrobes to differently themed areas without ruining the atmosphere of the lands they travel through.

Also, Disneyland Florida's Tower of Terror attraction is designed to fit in with the Morocco theme at EPCOT. More at

In 1666, there was a great fire in London. To commemorate the six people who died (and the property destroyed (the whole city)), the city raised a 61,5 meter tall monument in 1671. Since then, seven people have died from falling from the Monument's stairs or viewing platform.

The chance of being hurt or damaged while riding a roller coaster is one ten thousandth of the chance of being hurt or damaged while queuing for it.

There are only four operating coasters in the world whose name begins with the letter Y.

95% of the roller coasters in China are "clones" of already existing coasters.

The "highest" coaster in the world is situated in Katmandu, Nepal, at almost 1600 metres above sea level.

There has only been one single wooden roller coaster featuring an inversion. The loop has since being removed.

There is only one full-circuit launched Inverted Coaster in the world (cred is awarded to anyone who can give me the name and location of this coaster).

^I happen to love them. There's an entire enthusiast community for them out there (several, in fact), and I'm just an average member (OK, maybe slightly above, but not by much). My CoasterCount is around 20 somewhere, but I've spoken to people who've ridden more than 800.

Uhh... random facts:
- The Expedition Everest Coaster at Disney's Animal Kingdom is regarded as the most expensive roller coaster ever built, at $ 100,000,000. This is partially due to the fact that it runs inside a mountain, which also has a large animatronic yeti in it. The coaster, the yeti and the mountain does not touch each other, nor does their support structures.

- The record for most coasters in a single park is 17, set at Cedar Point in Ohio. The first coasters to reach 200, 300 and 400 feet were all built there.

 - The fastest coasters on Earth, the so-called Strata Coasters use as much electric power every day as a small city.

About 4% of the world has red hair.
Only 2% of Americans have red hair.
Scotland has the highest percentage of people with red hair, at about 13%.
In 1600's and 1700's Germany, having red hair was a sure sign that you were a witch.
In ancient Greece, they believed gingers turned into vampires when they died.
The average redhead has 90,000 hairs, while the average brunette has 100,000 to 110,000, and the average blonde has 120,000 to 140,000.
Gingers have a lower threshold for pain (they can't take as much of it)

In Norwegian, the word with the most subesequent vowels is "Saueøyeøyaeier", with 12 (In Norwegian, Y is always a vowel). It means "Owner of sheep's eye island". The reason why it can be put into one word, is because one doesn't split "double-words" in Norwegian, making writing "flowerpot" perfectly legal, for example. Thus, words can in theory be infinitely long.

Actually, it seems like I was wrong too. Here is a list of the ten strongest Pokémon moves by damage potential:

1st: Shuckle, having used Power Trick to switch its Attack and Defense, Skill Swap to get the Pure Power ability, holding the Metronome item, then using Defense Curl and Rollout. On the fifth turn of Rollout, it will have a base power of 4638 and coming off a gargantuan attack stat of 1228.*
2nd: Ursaring with Choice Band and Guts ability activated, using Metronome and getting Explosion. It will have a base power of 562, coming off an attack stat of 591. Not to mention the fact that it halves the opponent's defense upon use, effectively giving it a power of 1124. That will one-hit-KO every single Pokémon in the game, bar ghosts and Pokémon 4x resisting Normal attacks.
3rd**: Choice Specs Empoleon with Torrent ability activated using Hydro Cannon under rain (Power 759, stat of 353)
4th**: Choice Specs Kyogre's Water Spout under rain (Power 506, coming off a stat of 438)
5th: Choice Band Machamp's Focus Punch with Guts ability activated (Power 337, coming off a stat of 591)
6th: Choice Band Scizor's Fury Cutter used for the fifth time with Swarm ability activated (Power 540, coming off a stat of 394)
7th: Choice Specs Porygon-Z's Hyper Beam with Adaptability ability (Power 450, stat of 408)
8th: Choice Band Medicham's Focus Punch (Power 337, stat of 480)
9th: Choice Band Rampardos' Head Smash (Power 337, stat of 471)
10th: Choice Band Slaking's Giga Impact (Power 337, coming off a stat of 460)

*NOTE: Because Rollout and the clone move Ice Ball reach a power of 960 on the final turn, all users of the move could get a spot here. However, Shuckle is the prime example of pure attacking power, and is the only Rollouter/Ice Baller presented here.
**May be swapped.

^That's like sick. You're quite the expert on this subject.

Some reptiles, amphibians, and fish can asexually reproduce when the opposite sex is extinct in the area they inhabit.

Some schools of fish only have one male. When the male dies, the strongest female changes her sex to become the new male.

Very cliché, but let's mention it.

Cockroaches can survive a nuclear holocaust.

More people die of falling coconuts than shark attacks. And I hate those 'experts' saying shark are monsters of the depth...  ???

A photon's not a thing. That is, it's not matter.

Isn't a photon much light a light wave? That is, its not composed of atoms but it is still a wave aof radiation with energy, therefore making it a thing? I can't quite remember. Haven't touched physics for 2 years so I'm a little off on the subject.

"Mass: 0." Ergo, it's not matter.

I must say, people consult wikipedia far too much. It's not always accurate. But no one understands that.

Ok, as a science student, I tell you that a photon is energy, not matter, as it has no discernable mass or volume.

A Photon is a packet of light and energy, and it all depends on what frequency it's at. Gamma radiation is the fastest.

It goes radio waves, microwave(which is a kind of radio wave),infrared, visible light spectrum, ulra-violet,v-rays, alpha waves, beta, waves, gamma waves.
The more sub-catagories but I'm too lazy to name them.

Don't you find it a little curious that inventions that aren't needed for daily life (i.e. roller caosters) are quickly created after the key component (i.e. the electric motor) is invented or discovered; yet various things that seem almost invaluable (i.e. the light bulb) take hundreds of years to be refined, or invented even, after the need for it becomes apparent.

And thus we discover the downside of technological advancement.

Spider web has a stronger tensile strength than steel. i.e., if you had two jets pulling opposite ways on a spider web, they would lose momentum, fall, and crash.

Quote from: universe-X on January 14, 2010, 07:23:40 PMThe famous roller-coaster, "Cyclone" is made entirely out of wood and is the oldest functioning roller-coaster (to my knowledge, it was made in 1927). Wood, you know, that indestructible substance, the stuff that termites eat.

Umm... do not assume, dear friend: http://rcdb.com/m/1136.htm

This is the oldest coaster that I am aware of that still operates today.

Also, wooden coasters have longer life spans than steel coasters because they are easier to maintain. On steel coasters, the tracks and structure eventually bend so much that the coaster has to be scrapped or completely retracked. As the latter is about as expensive as building a new coaster, most companies choose to tear worn-out rides down and replace them.

With wooden coasters, however, you can rip out any part of the structure, and replace it (this is done on parts of most wooden coasters every year, off-season) without much trouble. In theory, a "woodie" could survive forever with a partial "retrack" every few years, and a new lift engine now and then, aside from regular maintenance (replacing wheels and lift chain, for instance, go in this category).

^Umm... only about 17. There aren't that many coasters in Norway, and in my current situation, I can't afford to go abroad. So my knowledge is mostly theoretical.
