Title: Video Game Music Appreciation
Post by: universe-X on December 29, 2009, 06:44:11 PM
This is strictly for Video Game Music. I made this for 3 reasons.

1) I was expecting to see something like this when first coming to NSM, but didn't find one, saw a comment on YouTube and here we are.

2) I feel like there's a deeper message that video game music is trying to tell us, and I wanna see what other people think...

3) I would like to see some different video game music. (I'm very fond of Nintendo) but I hear this great stuff about Sonic, Banjo-Kazooie, and Metroid, but I don't know if it's good or not. So hopefully I can find some music other than just Mario.

Wow, This is a nifty little topic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-z2kxFCQ_mQ

I recommend you try to post a link to the music regardless of how well known it is.

Gusty Garden is a very gusty piece, for lack of a better word. It is a soaring song, it gives you a sense of flying through the air.

The beginning kind of reminds me of Gusty Gulch from Paper Mario: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uL5JNPE8qQ

It's cool how the composer can take such a Mexican style piece and still make it sound lofty and soaring. I find the mixture a bit jarring at times however.

Thanks for the link UGC, but right now, I could kill you... I had this long spech written out on my DSi, and I posted it, it lagged up, and now it's gone!!! >:(

I'll try again...

What I really like about this song is that it's a melody that's spoken in a number of diverse ways throughout the whole game.

I also like how it starts out strong, a solid A, stating that there's something to be done. The discussion gets started, and the strings (I believe) give their thoughts. It gets louder, louder and then a horn calms it down letting one of the winds speak, with the harp singing in the background. But, it looks like the brasses have other ideas, they protest. They decide to arrange their final message to the world, and finally the whole orchestra announces its message to everyone, so loud that everyone remembers it . . .

And then it starts all over.

Sounds like a Bill in the U.S. Congress, huh?

And it's Japanese name, Wind Garden, fits perfectly. ;)

...You're as good as me when describing music. That was an interesting metaphor you gave, though I wouldn't make posts like that with a DSi because of those reasons you just gave.
Title: Re: Video Game Music Appreciation
Post by: universe-X on December 29, 2009, 07:36:59 PM
Thanks. :) And the DSi comes in handy when you least expect it (sadly, that's when I don't have it).

Also, after looking a little bit further, you could consider Gusty Garden the English language of SMG, the Purple Comet theme, hmmm, it's one that sticks when memorized, so let's give it the Spanish language of SMG. And the The End that was made only for the soundtrack, it's hidden, and not well known to people that don't know it, so let's give that theme the Hawaiian or Canadian language of SMG. :P

If anyone cares, the The End theme is basically Gusty Garden (the beginning of it, anyway) in C major (so basically, everything's a half step down). And the Purple Comet theme is similar to Gusty Garden somewhere near the end (of GG), I forgot/don't really care which key signature it is in :P

OK! Seeing a topic get off to a great start is always... great! :D Any ideas for the next few weeks? (pretty much copying UGC's idea, sorry! :P ) I'd also like it to go in a weekly order, or if the conversation is too short, we can bring it to 5 or even 3 days per song. Sounds good? Any ideas for a next song, at (least nothing SMG)? You are welcome to suggest custom/performances made on video (as long as they are some sort of remix).

^Let's get done with Gusty Garden first. After that... well, I'd like to see The. Song. I'm of course speaking of the most famous video game piece ever, perhaps one of the ten most influential songs of the 20th century, one of the most played songs ever:

Super Mario Bros. - Overworld.

If we want to save that for later, perhaps The Song of Storms, or Pokémon R/B/Y - Trainer Battle.

But for now, Gusty Garden. The beginning of it (from ten seconds in) for some reason reminds me of the intro to a television series about the 18th century England, just zooming in on a large mansion somewhere in the countryside, which is surrounded by perfectly angular hedges, small fountains and well-trimmed grass. Indeed, Gusty Garden does remind one of a garden.
The main melody is quite calm and peaceful, but the bass (is that strings?) gives it a sense of business and speed, just like floating among the skies can seem calm and peaceful, but there are high winds to be aware of. Then the crescendo kicks in, and the thoughts immediately leap to floating among the skies, at times landing on small planets inhabited by bunnies. There are high winds, high risk, but high returns. The gardens in the skies are beautiful, but navigating among them is hard.

Bass (or contrabass) is part of the strings. But I think the instrument you're looking for is just an acoustic guitar, that has it's own little countermelody in that first ten seconds. :-\ I could be wrong

^I'm talking about the violins, cellos (celli?) or whatever, that go between two notes very quickly during most of the song. They give the song speed, so to say.

If a may suggest-Prelude, from he FF series. Mainly ff7's.

Gusty Garden is a fantastic piece that captures what it tries to perfectly. It definitely makes you feel like you're flying around free, but to be careful.

Gusty Garden on Mario Paint (with FREE MP3!) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaZ6xiTdFvE)

^Not mine, btw. But it's still awesome.

The music is great but I hated the level... I think... my Wii broke over a year ago. I kept falling off of the planets. The game itself never clicked for me.

It's Mexican? I only hear a little bit of Mexican in it and I live dangerously close to Mexico... oh well. It does have maracas. Anyway, I imagine, like, the British back in the 17th and 18th Centuries, or whenever they basically ruled the world with a queen and stuff.

Wow, it's been a while since you've posted. Glad it was in here. ;)

I think the "Mexican" style he was referring to was the Gusty Gulch, song, I think. A rumor I heard is that [insert Composer name here, not Kondo, not Miyamoto] had 2 different styles of music to put in SMG, Latin (repeat: LATIN) and hip hop. Kondo hated them both, so [composer name] went with orchestral. It fit the game and here we are. I don't hear any maracas in there, though. I hear an acoustic, however, which kept up that Latin feel of the song.

BTW, I already have the MP3 ;) I am the Mario Paint saviour of NSM.

Kondo hated the Latin style? What? Have you heard the Mario Bros. Theme? It is latin. He's even admitted that the latin style is one of his greatest influences.

Question: What defines Latin?

@Maestro: It's not that he hated the Latin style, he hated the song that was given to him, that was, indeed, Latin.

Any instruments found in the song "Feliz Navidad." I'm not into Latin or Mexican music, but I'm pretty sure that most people who have Christmas know that song. "Feliz Navidad" is "Merry Christmas" in Spanish.

Actually, I could hear the SMB theme with a few Latin instruments now that I think about it.

Who knows?

Random thought: If a word in the dictionary were spelled wrong, would we ever know?

It has some cool, arguably Latin backing that keeps the fast pace, it makes you feel like you're flying, and that's basically what I got from this thread.

I don't fully understand why people say it feels like "flying". I can understand a little, but to me it's just really windy. I dunno . . .

By the way, I'm gonna make a long speech for all of the songs that we do. ;)

So, does anyone want to take this thread up if I'm absent on a day?

OK, we've moved on to Super Mario Bros. - Overworld!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEKDF_WbMlg

This song, I must say, is genius. Completely original and perfect song to wake you up and get you in the mood for some video gaming. The 8-bit sounds were a great start off for this song, so that just pitched it in with all the items popping up, gaining or losing strength. And like UGC said, this song is in fact Latin. I mean, in Wii Music, (for anyone that has it), people put in all these guitars, maracas, etc. And imagine this song without that "hidden" drumline. It actually would sound a little boring. But, yes this is THE Mario song right here, even if it is only 3 notes per beat. And it has shown up in (what I believe) every "main" Mario game, ever, in some way/form/shape. Take into consideration, New Super Mario Bros., which really impacted the Latin style that Kondo had in the original.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pk_lcZmezlA

Somewhere you can hear (near the end of the song, but I think I'm thinking about the SSBB version), that little intro of SMB in there. Nintendo couldn't have started off the series in a better way. And all in all, it's good to know when you have finally beaten "that frustrating level" to move on to the next challenge that awaits.

A new level and of course, a new game.

Well, I gotta get some sleep, I'll check back in the morning. :)

Apparently, the awesomeness of the song cannot be described in mere mortal words. Hence, the lack of discussion. Or maybe it's just school...

I like how, in almost every Mario game, the original song can be found in remixed form. In Super Mario Sunshine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xw-udW34t1o&feature=related), it was the caverns without the F.L.U.D.D. In Super Mario Galaxy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXmeyxsZkL4), it was the Toy Time Galaxy. In Super Mario RPG, Legend of the Seven Stars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IIkpMLgCEc&feature=related), in Booster's Tower (for a limited time).

Lovin' it.

Actually, I believe the only song that actually is orchestrated is the Main theme. Everything else is probably synthesizer or computer program with little real instruments. But, yeah, every singin that game was awesome (except, IMO, Mona Pizza, I just did not like it).

Doo-doot-doot-doo-doo-doot! The way this song starts has become a staple later. Short intro, on to funny melody.

The melody itself is upbeat and cool, and can really be played at any tempo. At slow speed, it's a nice, über-nostalgic tango; when played faster, it's stressful and fun at the same time.

The fun part with the Overworld Theme is how you can start playing it at any part of the song - almost whatever measure you like - and stop at any time as well, it doesn't sound weird at all. It can be interrupted by coin/star/mushroom catch sounds at any time, this is part of its charm.

Umm... I'm really too tired to write anything more about it. Other than, I love this song.
Title: Re: Video Game Music Appreciation

Yes this song should be the most recognizable by any (so-called) member of NSM if any measure were to be played.

Ok, moving on. *sigh*

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: Windmill Hut (A.K.A. Song of Storms):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-ZPpGdt1xQ

Brawl RemiX:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFTUgFOMfgA

Personally, I like the Brawl version better, but that's just me. . .  :P

This is the first time that I've really actually payed attention to this song. I could guess that a lot of OoT plays can get a lot of nostalgia out of this. This song makes me think that I'm on a pirate ship, sailing through the dark clouds of the unknown, looking for that lost treasure. The ocarina use in this is beautiful, genius, and amazing. The little snaps, echos, tambourines, etc. just locks in that pirate feeling. I bet that a bunch of people would be sticking around the Windmill Hut for this. I could only imagine, since the current TOOL-ASSISTED WORLD RECORD is a few minutes under 3 hours. I am not about to spend 3 hours playing a Zelda game without hearing this nice tune in it. Any other thoughts?
Title: Re: Video Game Music Appreciation

Pirates? Maybe with the Brawl one.

I actually first encountered this in Oracle of Seasons. I always though that the guy with the phonograph was cursed or something. I always hear some variation with rapid eighths replacing the melody in the back of my mind when I hear this. While it is a good piece, I have no idea why Kondo decided this was the Song of Storms. It doesn't seem storm like at all.
Title: Re: Video Game Music Appreciation
Post by: universe-X on January 11, 2010, 08:13:54 PM
Oh yeah, you're right, I was thinking about the Brawl version.

And after listening to the original version again, I would have to say that the instrument is too bright to be named Song of Storms.  :-\ But everyone has their own perspective.

I imagine being under deck on a ship sailing on high seas. Masts and sail are long gone, the ship is rolling, and it's hard to sit straight on the floor, not to mention standing on your feet. Nobody is on deck any more, they are all flushed away or have escaped down here. The rain constantly pelts the deck above with water, and the constant rumble from the waves outside makes it hard to hear anything. In the corner of the small room, and old man with a peg leg sits with his accordion, playing. The Song of Storms begins.

It's just despair and hopelessness, sitting in the middle of something you can't control. Like the Molgera Battle tune, in some ways.
Title: Re: Video Game Music Appreciation
Post by: Maretocks on January 12, 2010, 06:30:32 PM
Ahh, I love this song. Like the SMB Overworld theme, it can be played at almost any tempo.

Slowly, it's a beautiful, calming song, and because of it's length, you can repeat it, and it never gets drawn out or boring. Every moment of it is pleasure.

Played fast, it's an exciting, engaging piece that makes you feel like just running around outside, and again, it doesn't get boring.

I personally think that, rather than the chaotic and fearsome aura of a storm, it portrays the rain and gray clouds instead of lightning and wind. The ambient bass gives the song a perfect foundation, and it definitely makes you feel like you're protected from the storm, well for me anyway. It gives me the feeling I'm under a shelter in the middle of the woods, the sky is overcast and gray and there's a light rain. Plus, I like that kind of weather, so that adds to my love of the song even more.

I don't have much to comment on the Brawl version. It's a faster version, and yeah, all I can say is pirates. :P
Title: Re: Video Game Music Appreciation
Post by: universe-X on January 12, 2010, 08:28:28 PM
I don't know why everyone hates the Brawl version so much (YouTube comments). It has a deeper, thick tone to it that deserves the name Song of Storms. Don't get me wrong, though. The ocarina was beautiful.

The song overall makes me think of the gray storm...

but I can see an island far off, where a ray of light is shining on it, which also signaled as the ray of hope.

Pokémon Red/Blue - Trainer Battle it is, then!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Jmty_NiaXc This is the original song. Just beeps, really fast beeps, awesome beeps.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48S_q42YQkw This version was used in the Animé, with the quite fitting name "Burning Battlefield".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qu2IB7mykU&feature=related This remix was used in Pokémon Stadium. Beside the original, it's the best version, IMO.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGDiO1G0-K0&feature=related unplayable?

What I like about this piece is the fact that the main melody is so calm, while the bass is all over, then they suddenly merge and hammer out chords. Then, of course, the story this theme tells (time code for the original song in brackets):

You're out strolling on Route 9, when a young boy suddenly appears. He runs towards you, and challenges you to a battle. And according to the official rules, you can't pull out. Your Pokédex has already registered his request, and if you don't accept, money is immediately drawn from your savings. Battle it is, then.
The lad is barely twelve, but he looks tough. After all, you're about the same age, and have walked all the way here from Pallet Town. The two of you measure up a field on an open area by the road, put your gear down, and take your spots on either end of the field. You don't know what Pokémon he has, what strategy he prefers, or how long the battle will last. On the other hand, he doesn't know anything about you either. Beeps from your pockets count down time until you can throw the Poké Balls. Too early, and the Pokédexes will register a rule break. Too late, it's cheating. Both rule breaks and cheating mean less money for you, more for the Pokémon League Organization. Three... two... one... Go.
(0:00)
Poké Balls fly through the air, open, and creatures emerge in a cloud of pure white light. The youngster has chosen a Rattata. Well then, no match for Nidorino. You calmly calculate what moves to use, and Nidorino expectantly looks at you over his left shoulder.
"Double Kick", you mutter, as Rattata runs towards Nidorino. The Pink rabbit/rhino scrapes the ground with his forelegs, then dashes for the rodent.
(0:15)
At the last second, Rattata speeds up significantly, and tackles Nidorino right in the jaw. After the impact, it slides underneath Nidorino's body, but can't avoid being hit by a hind leg, and then the other.
"Horn Attack", you shout. Nidorino was damaged by a Pidgey a few hours before the battle, and isn't in top shape.
"Bite!", the youngster yells from his position on the other end of the field. You can hear from his voice that he thinks you are stronger than him. The two dash for each other again, Rattata jumps up in the air with its tiny jaws wide open. Nidorino jumps too, and rams Rattata right in the belly. The Rat Pokémon is flung clear off the field, and doesn't try to get up once it lands. Nidorino roars triumphantly, while the kid runs over to see if Rattata is okay. You remark that a professional trainer would have called his Pokémon back without moving himself, but it's nice to see that the kid cares about his Rattata.
(0:58)
Not much later, you're back into position. The kid is out of luck today, a single Fury Attack slams his Sandshrew to the ground. His Ekans isn't very impressing either, but it manages to land a Bite before being taken out by Horn Attack.
(1:21)
"Go Diglett!", the kid shouts and throws his fourth Poké Ball. The Mole Pokémon is already submerged in the ground when the cloud of light settles.
"Double Kick", you shout to your weakened Nidorino.
"Dig!", the kid shouts, and Diglett seemingly vanishes. Nidorino stops, looking around. His large ears stand right up from his head. He's fully focused on trying to spot the ground bulging before Diglett emerges. However, he doesn't see it. Diglett appears right under Nidorino's feet, and breaks the ground with such force that Nidorino is thrown a few metres to the side. You call it back. Defeated, but you've got more Poké Balls in your belt.
(1:26)
"Go Pidgeotto!", you shout. Diglett's next Dig is just useless. "Wing Attack!"
Pidgeotto turns towards the Diglett, spreads its wings, and starts flapping them. Then, an unusually strong flap of the wings, and a shockwave runs across the grass and smacks into Diglett. It turns limp and seemingly sinks into its hole. A beep from the Pokédex in your pocket indicates that the battle is over. You shake hands with the kid, call back Pidgeotto, and keep on strolling, heading for the next Pokémon Center...
(fade out).

Thanks for taking over :) This song gives a pretty big rush. As I've mentioned before (not here),  I haven't listened to much Pokemon music, but this song goes great in a battle. The left hand is a bit uncontrolled in this song (I've only listened to the original, btw). And is it me, or does the song have a few beeps spread out? Well, anyway, the main melody sounds a little eery, and the bass helps add to it so much. I'm not sure how to describe it, other than the one of the most perfect songs for a side battle.

Also, one thing that I noticed from Cobraroll's speech (great, btw!), I'd like to hear all your perspectives as if it's the first time you listen to the song. The main reason being, that most people I meet judge vg music as nerdy, as soon as they hear an 8-bit sound, etc. I'd like to hear information as if you didn't even know it's from a video game, please! ;D

In the original, I could hear three pitches of beeps. My favorite has always been the middle pitch; the one generally used for the bass cleft in piano. It's so underrated, yet so totally awesome.

I last played Pokemon three years ago. Blue Version. I never even finished Sapphire; by then it was just too weird. Bulbasaur is, and always will be, my favorite Pokemon. (That includes his evolutions)

Funniest thing: I was at Toys R Us looking for toys for my nephews, and I saw a poster for Pokemon. Every single Pokemon on the poster was third generation except one: Pikachu. That Pokemon was the only one that I recognized. I thought that it was funny.

this song is epic, one of my favourite ones of the pokemon series. It reminds me of my childhood...EPIC! It was really difficult to arrange and it sounds a bit strange on piano, but if someone of you is capable of playing this, he must videotape it.
Brawler4ever, you are right this is funny, there are so many Pokemons, they should stop making new ones. No child on earth will be able to know all Pokemons.
To Cobraroll: Amazing story^^.

Aww...

I took the time to get it as realistic as possible. Everything in that story is taken straight from R/B/Y (location, trainer, Pokémon, moves, and the actual damage they would do to each other. Except from the fact that a lvl. 32 Nidorino's Double Kick would have knocked out a lvl. 19 Rattata, possibly in a single hit).

Anyway, this song sounds like it's made for electric guitar. Though, the main melody fits any instrument, as long as that thundering bass is in place. Even flute, which for some reason makes it even more epic (as in, "there's one helluva storm out there, and I'm in the middle of its calm eye"). On the other end of the spectrum, even an organ would fit.

Or perhaps that's just me liking this song, no matter what instrument it's performed on.

By the way, suggestion for a future song: Gourmet Race.

Hey, if you can provide a story and a realistic POV, that'd be great, too! And, also, link please. ;D

Oh that's the song? I've heard it before! It's a great song! Yeah, this is definitely going on the list!  :)

EDIT: Also, I added Final Destination: SSBB, unless anyone has any issues with it . . .

No one does? Ok! :P

Another approach to the Pokémon Battle Theme. It's only the first third of the video, but the rest is definitely worth a watch as well.

I love it.

I didn't make this topic based on my opinions. I want to hear what you guys  have to say too. And the two are, indeed, list worthy. I was wondering when we would get into some Metroid. . .

Not many Metroid songs have alot of depth though. I never really like the soundtracks, save for a few of the ambient songs.

Well, I thought it was on topic, but we can surely add it. Okay, perhaps not necessarily the entire piece, but perhaps the Pokémon Main Theme, which kicks in at 2:40, and/or the Elite Four Battle, from 3:48 on, or the Lance Battle Theme from Gold/Silver, which has a tiny part from about five minutes in. Separately, perhaps.

Let's just do the whole thing. ;) 'Tis easier that way. I'm not on a real cpu, right now, so I'll do it later.

The Prelude (Final Fantasy VII)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_jA-zmzsRA

This song is so serene in a way that you wish to be invisible, to float, to break free of any chains that try to hold you, and you don't even have to try. You are free to do anything you want. I absolutely love this song. It's simplicity and difficulty counteract in a way that balance each other out perfectly. Have fun...

Alright, I suggested this one, so I'll comment. The rest of you should be ashamed. >.>

I think this song describes the Final Fantasy games perfectly. The song shows a lot of freedom, but also has a melancholy tone to it. Such is Final Fantasy. I see this as a definitively sad song, but at the same time calming and free. It has an unending rhythm that seems to make you want to keep going, no matter what. You have to trudge along, then when it changes to major at the end, you feel like you've gone through a dark tunnel at come to the light at the end. Which, again, is a lot like the FF games. The character's personal struggles they overcome. So yeah, this song is like a dark tunnel. IMO, haha.

Also, it's so damn hard to play. :S Still can't to the arpeggios on the left hand after like a month.

^^ Well put! And if I may suggest, use the right hand for rhythms like that. Especially since the left hand will kick in a little later in the song. But, for the beginning, you could surely combine both hands.

As for the song, it's mood is happy and sad, more like a countermelody (I hope I am correct). And last, but not least, I would definitely listen to this song to get myself to sleep. (Maybe at a lower volume)  :D

Meh, I watched w3sp play it and thought, "Yeah, I'll copy him." So I'm playing the chords on the right, with the arpeggios on the left. And, I may have misunderstood, I do use both hands at the beginning of the song.

Sorry Dude, for practically skipping your song! :P We'll try again.

Lunatic Princess- Kaguya's Theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pw2WQjqKpVM

For starters, this song is very... Asian. XD It uses those classic "Asian-style" instruments very well. It's fast pace gives you a great adventure to think about, too. The scattered notes, the tempo, the instruments, they play well with each other. I can just imagine a drive along, like, a bridge over water, but it's really a chase that I just go with. Really cool. Any other opinions?

God I love this song.

All of ZUN's songs have been absolutely epic. Considering he does all the artwork, music, programming, script, etc I think his best area is music.
