Title: Best Nintendo Songs to Arrange for Concert Band? - MUS file up!
Post by: Tangy on September 13, 2010, 03:57:44 PM
At our school everyone has to do a concert band arrangement project. For mine I was thinking of doing a Nintendo video game medley. It's not due until June, but I want to get a head start now. :P Especially since we're forced to use Sibelius and I've never used that before..

I'm looking for more well-known/ nostalgic music. I already have a good idea of music from Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Pikmin, and Animal Crossing.

I'm thinking of starting with the "Night Comes" music from Pikmin (arranged to sound more like the one from Pikmin 2 when you collect 1000 pokos or more during that day... brass-y.) and possibly ending with part of the title theme from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In between the overworld theme and windmill hut themes from Zelda, pallet town, ss anne, route 4 and Viridian forest from pokemon R/B/Y, and... SOMETHING from mario bros. 2 or 3. plus the forest maze theme from super mario RPG and the tetris A theme are all my favourite possibilities. I want to include as much as possible, perhaps using parts of music as connectors between two pieces.

I really don't know much music outside of the games I've played, which is why I'm making this board... What is your favourite/ most nostalgic nintendo video game music? Anything suggested outside of the five games I listed above is much appreciated!

If you need any help with Sibelius, I've been using it for ages, so feel free to ask me anything.

As for song choice, you probably should think of songs that flow well from one to another as opposed to trying to include songs from X number of games because you like them.

And as for my preferences: I do have quite a liking for Secret of Mana (SNES) music. I guess to me it seems less "jingle-like" than some of the other standard Mario/Zelda stuff. I think most of it could work reasonably well as a woodwind section feature. But that's just what I think.

Question: Is there a limit on how long, or how short, it has to be?

Thanks DekuTrombonist :D And I agree, that's why I need to know more than the music I'm familiar with.

And I don't believe there is any limit.

From Pokemon RBY, you should include Route 11... That's my favorite Route music in the game. :) And probably do Viridian/Pewter/Saffron City rather than S.S. Anne.

In my opinion, that song is all over, so it's more nostalgic... :P

But it doesn't really matter.

Well, if you don't mind me suggesting, but...

For Pokémon, I would personally choose Vermilion City since it seems like the best for a concert band score with the parts filled and such.

For LoZ, Though the Windmill Hut may be a good song and all, the Overworld is the most recognizable out of them and has a great "UMPH" that comes with it that makes it sound Stately

Also, you can compose the sheet in Finale, save it as a XML file and then open that XML file in Sibelius and save it as a .sib file!

Thanks for the suggestions. :)

@SlowPokemon - Well, a lot of the route music from the first two pokemon games are very similar in style... so honestly it wouldn't matter too much. I picked route 4 because to me it sounded the most nostalgic and most powerful. I think route 24/25 played at the beginning of the game when you pressed "new game", so that would be cool too. I like route 11, but I just like the others more. xD.

And I've always had something against the Saffron City music. I guess as a kid I found it annoying. I'd do Pallet Town over SS Anne though. SS Anne I think has a lot of potential... but isn't as recognizable since you're only there once.

@drpamplemousse - Yeah, Vermilion definitely sounds like a typical concert band piece and would be easy to arrange and play, but it doesn't have that much to it, really. Although maybe that's a good thing. @_@

And since the Windmill theme's tune is so short, I was thinking of adding it for only a couple bars or something. It would be easy to transition to or from something like the boo's merry-go-round from super mario 64 that has the same time sig and rhythm. I'm very excited to put the overworld somewhere in the middle and feel that UMPH. :D

I would do the Animal Crossing Wild World title screen (here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aj1cmrUCWbM)). That song is really cool and nostalgic for me... but perhaps too peaceful and slow for this?

And also the Super Mario 64 main theme... EVERYONE knows that. :)

That song is here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBEUgYxgnoA), by the way, but I'm assuming you already know it. Because EVERYONE does. ;D

Ohh I completely forgot about the title theme. @_@ Yeah that would be awesome. There has to be some slow stuff in there. xD And of course the bomb-omb battlefield. :D

Possibly the Hyrule Field theme from OoT, as well. Very nostalgic.

There's definitely a lot of options to choose from here! I think that if you picked the songs that really have the most emotion and memories behind them it might make it easier to want to arrange them. I agree choices from pokemon. Route 4 is one of my favorites too and Pallet Town definitely brings on the nostalgia. If you're doing Pikmin music, I've always really enjoyed the Forest of Hope and Perplexing Pool cause they are really pretty songs that accurately represent the feelings of their respective areas and are quite slow-tempoed as well. But everyone else here has really great ideas too!

Definitely Pallet Town, I've played it on my french horn and other instruments and it sounds like it was made for concert band.  Most routes would make a nice up-beat bridge between songs.  Tetris Theme A?  I don't know, I think it feels rather too "Techno" but it could work.  I think you also might want to look into Donkey Kong music, it would have some great percussion lines (obviously) and I really like DK Country's Map theme, could be a nice high reed feature.  I also think the intro to Super Mario World would go nicely.  I'll let you know if I have any other ideas.  ;)

Anything Zelda. Really.

You could epic up Final Bowser from SM64.

Token Tango from DKC2. Also the song used in the DK stage in Super Smash Bros. Klubba's Reveille would be good too, I just noticed.

Zero-Two from Kirby 64.

I always liked the Winter theme from the original Harvest Moon, it's catchy. It'd be hard to fit in though, it's repetitive. It's also not in submitted on this site which NEEDS to happen!

I've looked up all the songs everyone suggested. Sorry for forgetting about this thread and thanks for the suggestions everyone!

@SlowPokemon - Yesss the one from OoT. ^__^ I love that. xD

@Sekter77 - I absolutely adore the pikmin 1 soundtrack. :3 I don't think forest of hope would fit too well though, it's more piano arrangement material, and perplexing pool isn't very recognizable, even to people who've played the game (which is unfortunate because it's absolutely gorgeous :<). I really like the impact site and final trial music too, but I don't think I'll put them in. Really complex rhythms there. xD

@garlicbananas - I think the tetris a theme could be arranged pretty easily for concert band actually, with some adjustments. ^^ That map theme could have been an epic clarinet solo if I thought someone in our band would be good enough to play it. @_@ And yesss the super mario world intro is awesome. ^__^ And thanks, definitely let me know! :D

@Maretocks - Your un reminds me of a ski hill near here called Martock. xD. Anyways, I think if I combined the final bowser with something else it would turn out pretty well. By itself it's a little plain. And yeah, that's the jungle japes theme from ssb! xD The good thing about music featured on ssb is that even people who haven't played the games the music is originally from will still recognize it from ssb. I liked the Klubba's Reveille! I've never played any DK games besides a bit of DK64 and donkey konga/ jungle beats so I don't know much. Zero-Two is really interesting, not sure how well it would fit with concert band though.

@winterkid09 - Ohh wow I wasn't expecting that minor key @_@ The only harvest moon I've played is magical melody so I was expecting an upbeat jingly tune. xD It's really awesome! If I have spare time I'll see if I can arrange it for the site. ;)

Well I am very happy because Olimar finished the Flipsville/Chompworks Galaxy!

And@Tangy-- This might be a bit new, but a great idea to arrange (it will definitely leave everyone wowed) is the Super Mario Galaxy main theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-z2kxFCQ_mQ), more commonly known as Gusty Garden.

There's also the epic Super Mario Galaxy 2 main theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEqofzdkik0), synonymous to Sky Station.

They're both great songs, but perhaps not what you were looking for.

I didn't know that the Gusty garden theme was the main theme too, I never caught that...

What about Checker Knights? As far as I'm aware, it uses a wide range of instruments, possibly an entire classical orchestra. However, I'm not sure what the English term "Concert Band" means. What instruments? Can anyone fill me in?

Oh, and Pokémon's Route 11. Do that. Please.
Title: Re: Best Nintendo Songs to Arrange for Concert Band?
Post by: Tangy on October 22, 2010, 10:18:09 AM
Concert bands consist mainly of woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. There aren't any strings except for the double bass and maybe some other exceptions. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concert_band#Instrumentation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concert_band#Instrumentation)) My school band has Bb clarinets, bass clarinets, flutes, a piccolo, alto saxes, tenor saxes, a bari sax, trumpets, french horns, euphoniums, trombones, tubas, and various percussion. We also have piano if needed.

Checker Knights sounds awesome! And yeah, it sounds like it would translate well. :) I love all of the original pokemon routes, but I was thinking of doing either route 4 or route 24.

And gusty garden galaxy is cool too! Man this is going to be a long arrangement, lol! And the sky island theme is really neat too, sounds pretty concert band-ish actually, haha.
Title: Re: Best Nintendo Songs to Arrange for Concert Band?
Post by: Sekter77 on October 22, 2010, 12:42:44 PM
Checker Knights is awesome. Kirby Air Ride had a pretty epic soundtrack for a racing game.

In my opinion, I think you should do Route 4 from Pokemon instead of Route 24. I just think it sounds a little more epic and filled out than 24. Plus it's just super nostalgic for me at least.

It's a shame that Pikmin has such an obscure soundtrack. I think that since it's mostly background, it gets lost in the rush of the game and forgotten about. But it is definitely very pretty when it can be listened to on its own.

And Donkey Kong Jungle Beat has Battle for Storm Hill which might work pretty well. It was a shame to see that game kinda forgotten about since it's a fantastic platformer!

We kinda flooded this thread with ideas didn't we! There's just so much good game music out there that it's hard to just choose a few favorites! So, good luck with your project!

IKR? But they all don't like it as much as Route 4, so meh. Route 11 is still my favorite.

Sky Station and Gusty Garden are really cool songs. The best from each game, pretty much. :P

Mahito Yokota is a freakin' genius.

And I really appreciate the "flooding of this thread"! :)

@Tangy
Glad I could Help ;D
Also the Dr. Mario "Fever" theme would work excellently.  A great low brass feature at the beginning and maybe a nice french horn/alto sax soli towards the middle if you know what part I'm talking about.  Great song to really get the band and audience excited.

Hi! :) Sorry for not giving any updates... I started the arrangement a while ago. Since this is for school, I don't feel comfortable uploading it to the internet at this time (though I will once the project is over... which won't be until June).

So far I have (game: music) Pikmin: Night Comes -> Donkey Kong Arcade: Game Start -> Super Mario World: Castle -> Super Mario World: Level Complete Fanfare -> The Legend of Zelda: Overworld -> Pokemon RBY: Pallet Town -> Pokemon RBY: Route 4

It sounds pretty good so far :) I've really just been trying to find songs that flow together nicely, instead of trying to mush all the ones I really wanted into one arrangement... so some will be left out.

After this the plan is Paper Mario: Goomba Road -> Kirby Superstar Ultra: Gourmet Race

(yeah I know in the post before this I said I'd rather do green greens... I still might. Just for this moment this works better.)

It might not be "Nintendo-ish" enough, but the Fire Emblem theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BztAuRDPARE&feature=related) is very well suited for orchestras. If you don't mind more Zelda music, Outset island (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uG960gmNiKY&feature=related) sounds lovely (there are some orchestrated arrangements as well).

edit: Oh yeah almost forgot, Hyrule Castle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWNTs3zWuEc) is guaranteed to sound epic. Hmm, maybe I should go and try to make an orchestra arrangement too sometime.. Oh yeah and take a look at http://www.zreomusic.com/, many epix to be found.

Thanks for the suggestions Offkey! :) I'm really trying to cut down on this project now... since most people have arrangements that are 30-40 bars and mine's going to be at the very least about 160 haha.

The Fire Emblem theme is indeed pretty good material for this project, it's just I really can't cut that piece down any.

I've never heard Outset Island before, it's adorable haha. And Hyrule Castle is a classic... it's in Twilight Princess too, no? I was thinking of squishing as many Zelda tunes as possible towards the end... I wish I could include everything... I mean I could, but I still have to separate all of the parts (I wrote it in chords so I'd know how many of each part to put in, and what percussion to include.) and that's going to take forever.

Right now I have (game: music) Pikmin: Night Comes -> Donkey Kong Arcade: Game Start -> Super Mario World: Castle -> Super Mario World: Level Complete Fanfare -> The Legend of Zelda: Overworld -> Pokemon RBY: Pallet Town -> Pokemon RBY: Route 4 -> Paper Mario: Goomba Road -> Kirby Superstar Ultra: Gourmet Race -> Tetris: A Theme -> Super Mario RPG: Forest Maze

After this I'll put part of the "rainy day" theme from animal crossing in (the melody that's heard throughout the series part), and more Zelda of some degree. I still like Checkered Knights and Rainbow Road a lot but I honestly just need to end this because I only have two months left. I'll end it with the SSBB main theme.

That sounds so cool! Please finish it so I can hear it! P
Title: Re: Best Nintendo Songs to Arrange for Concert Band?
Post by: Tangy on May 04, 2011, 08:32:23 PM
The project is due next week... I'm finished the arranging part, now I just have to do the separating part (I arranged it in chords, and now I'm separating it by hand in a full score). Does anyone know if Finale Printmusic 2010 has a feature to split a full score into separate parts? I know Sibelius can do this, but I don't know about Finale. That would make it easier. Otherwise, I'll have to do that by hand too.

So, here's the final rundown of all of the video game tunes in this: (game: music) Pikmin: Night Comes -> Donkey Kong Arcade: Game Start -> Super Mario World: Castle -> Super Mario World: Level Complete Fanfare -> The Legend of Zelda: Overworld -> Pokemon RBY: Pallet Town -> Pokemon RBY: Route 4 -> Paper Mario: Goomba Road -> Kirby Superstar Ultra: Gourmet Race -> Tetris: A Theme -> Super Mario RPG: Forest Maze -> Animal Crossing: Rainy Day -> *The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Medley*: Song of Storms -> Saria's Song -> Epona's Song -> Song of Time -> Serenade of Water -> Bolero of Fire -> Super Smash Bros. Brawl: Main Theme -> *Super Mario: Overworld "Cameo"* -> Back to SSBB for the ending.

If you count the Mario overworld cameo (one bar, flute solo), that makes twenty pieces throughout this whole thing. It's just over five minutes long, and 173 bars. Thank you everybody for your suggestions! I did take them into account when arranging. :D

I'll post the finished product sometime after our band's final concert (...ever :(), sometime in early June.

We have had our final band concert, and we played my arrangement. :) It was... rather difficult and we didn't have a lot of time to practice it, but they managed to get through it at least... lol. Some parts sounded good... some parts not so much. My friend has a much better sounding recording of it that I hope she'll send me!

That would be epic. I couldn't give it to my band director (cause he'd dismiss it for something super hard), even though everyone would probably love to play it.

I want to see the sheets, and then I'll test it out on the instruments I have.

That was EPIC!  That turned out as awesome as it could have.  I could feel the tension from lack of practice, but another week or 2 would have made it that much more amazing.  Nice job!

Hey guys! Thanks for the nice comments :) I've very proud of my band. I've received lots of positive feedback from them and it was overall a very fun experience!

The final version is on my brothers computer... and he's away until Saturday. I do have the almost-final version (at this stage, the ranges were not double-checked, some of the parts are doubled slightly differently (like, with forest maze this version only has first clarinets playing the melody, but in the final I put all of them on it...), and it wasn't formatted yet), but other than that it's almost the same!

There's a glitch (on my computer, at least) at the end of the Song of Time where it slows down tremendously - ignore that, it's not suppost to slow down at all lol.

So, here it is! Thank you everyone, I still can't believe it's over!

If you have any questions, ask away. :D

That would be awesome! :) My brother has the individual sheets on his computer, and he's away atm, but I'll get back to you as soon as possible. Drop me an e-mail at jprall27@msn.com so that I can send them to you. That goes for anybody who wants the individual sheets - I will not be posting them to the internet.

Oh, and also, I don't own Nintendo or any of it's songs ;) I would also like to say that I would prefer if you ask before you use these sheets for anything besides looking at them. Thank you!

We can't

We have so little people we have to have Year 7's (Upper Primary School) join our Junior Band (High School). We have hardly any Trumpets (Grand total of 3) and heaps of Trombones. No French Horn, one Bass Clarinet (Who's leaving) and one Baritone Saxaphone. We would be able to fit all the Flutes, Clarinets and Saxaphones, though.

Besides we'd stuff it up so bad, I'd never want to hear it again  :-\

Nice idea though

We could do it... we seriously have AT LEAST 3 of everything (and like 12 trombones and 10 trumpets)

The only hurdle is getting it past the music director, because im sure we're all for playing epic nintendo music in a nerdy, college band that still plays SSBB every weekend.

Measure 50 = Holy crapping crapnuggets! How do you expect tubas to go that high? Tubas don't play in that octave... That's ridiculously high. Good thing other parts are assigned to it. I'm gonna run this one by my band director to see if we can play it next year. Sounds great apart from a couple of awkard-ish transitions.

LOL sorry, I think I mentioned this, but that's the unedited version. The tubas play a whole note or something similarly tuba-y in the final version... which I forgot to post, my bad! I will add it tomorrow, since I did bring it with me on a usb...

Actually, looking at this now, I'm pretty sure nearly the entire tuba part was placed down an octave after editing.

Thanks though. :)

Oh thank goodness. I was seriously worried about that. xD So I'll wait until tomorrow to show my director then. ^^

Okay, I didn't change it to a whole note, just sort of cut it off when it went high, lol. xD Got full points on range, so hopefully everything's okay.

FINAL VERSION (http://www.box.com/s/jjyvdxmr7ae5nhq8fvur)

If anyone wants the individual sheets, PM me your email and I'll email them to you... I know finale lets you break a score like this into parts, but they aren't formatted and don't have any labels or anything. Took me FOREVER to do the individual sheets.
