Ok just to be clear, what all can be submitted other than piano music?
Title: Re: Update, Friday August 19th of 2011
Post by: Winter on August 19, 2011, 10:00:16 PM
Well, the way things are set up right now, just classical orchestras. At a later time, we may have options for more typed of groups (String Quartets...) You know. But right now, a simple Concert band, piano, and piano duets are all we accept.

Ok, so Orchestral pieces and concert band pieces only?

also, what happened to "Winterkid09"?

I am too. What exactly qualifies as a classical orchestra? I can only assume that it would be the orchestration for Beethoven's Ninth, since that is the make-up of a basic orchestra these days. Plus a tuba and an extra wind or too, and more percussion as well.
Title: Re: Update, Friday August 19th of 2011
Post by: Winter on August 19, 2011, 10:58:26 PM
You know, I haven't even figured this out myself. If you consider it orchestral, go ahead and submit it, what really matters is whether each instrument is playable.

If need be, we will separate arrangements more specifically at a later time.

we as a community probably should have discussed this in greater detail rather than suddenly implementing it.
Title: Re: Update, Friday August 19th of 2011
Post by: MaestroUGC on August 19, 2011, 11:24:40 PM
This is how I see the breakdowns happening:

Symphonic Orchestra: The largest orchestration group that really has no limits to the instrumention in my opinion, but will need to at least include: Strings, Winds, Brass, and Percussion.

Chamber Orchestra: At its most basic, a string orchestra with winds and a few other instruments.

Concert Band: Typical make-up of a standard concert/symphonic wind orchestra

Marching Band: Typical make-up of a standard marching band.

String Orchestra: Self-explanitory.

Ensemble: Any collection of instruments that doesn't fit any of the above.

Chamber Ensemble: Duets, Trios, Quartets, etc. Mainly a collection of soloists.

I'd be willing to create an actual guideline for instrument breakdown for each of these, if you want. We can incorporate these as they come.

I agree, did anyone even know of plans to implement orchestral arrangements into the site before this update? Besides Winter and JaMaHa, of course.

This was just kind of sprung up, it's not necessarily a bad thing but it does create complications. It seems--to use my and Vera's favorite word--frivolous. Are there going to be enough orchestral arrangements submitted to merit an announcement that we accept them? I don't know as of yet but as for myself, I don't know enough about orchestras and the like to arrange something for them. I need a better understanding of other instruments... :P

It doesn't really seem like anything bad can come of the addition.  Maybe some discussion would have been merited (at least it is now), but what's really the worst case here?  Some people submit arrangements that aren't really what Winter had in mind and we have to come up with some guidelines?

For the record, I didn't know about this either, but it seems like it's been been brought up before by forumers as something people wanted, so I'm kind of surprised by some of the negative replies.

I'm working out a more detailed system for accepting orchestral arrangements. Hopefully we'll have a thread up with guidelines and help topics to help the forum understand what's up.

If you have any suggestions, make a thread if it's detailed, otherwise small suggestions can be PM'ed to me.

I've already started working on some orchestral arrangements, but will mod them to whatever guidelines are set up. Can't wait to see them go up on the site. Sound gorgeous.

I've never arranged outside of piano, but I may give a try at arranging an orchestration. I'll probably do small ensembles though, since it I'm trying it for the first time. Nothing huge, like what Fingerz is doing for Tetris type A right now.
