MASSIVE mayhem poll. I listed the major ones, but I had to stop somewhere. I know a lot of you have favorite composers who aren't on the list, hence the "other" option.
You get three votes, here are mine:
1. Tomohito Nishiura -- his music for the Layton series is my favorite in any video game.
2. Mahito Yokota -- his orchestral work on the Super Mario Galaxy games is absolutely top-notch, most likely the best achievement on the list.
3. Hitomi Sato -- although simple, her cute music for the Pokémon series represents some of the best of the newer games in the canon.
Post your own votes below!
My Other vote was for Hitoshi Sakimoto (FFXII)
And you could list Nobou Uematsu as Final Fantasy I-X, Super Smash Bros Brawl, but that's my personal oponion
Arata Iiyoshi / Atsuhiro Ishizuna, Koji Kondo, and Tomohito Nishiura = basically my entire life
I simply have too many favorites. This was hard.
Yeah, there are a lot of good ones.... but Kondo takes the bacon. He's just too influential.
No Grant Kirkhope, Dave Wise, Robin Beanland?
Why does Rareware not get any love, do you just hate British people?
Uncool, man. Uncool.
I know David Wise wrote the Donkey Kong music, but no idea who the other two are.
Get out. Turn in your VG Music card and get out.
Go learn you some music, then maybe you can come back.
Maybe.
Also, Christopher Tin should be on there, he is the most acclaimed out of all of these composers.

No, I won't get out; just because I don't know who two composers are don't mean I know nothing about video game music -_-
Looking up the other two, I have never played any of the games they've composed for. So no, I won't "turn in my VG Music card."

Is he the composer of Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts? ::)

If it wasnt for him and his compositions, I can safely say that I would not be here today. I remember being in 3rd grade after 3 years of piano, and wanting to quit so badly because all of the music seemed the same to me. Then I found this website (You've probably heard of herbalcell.com?) where this girl arranges sheet music, including versions with letters on the notes for easy readings. Basically all of the music I downloaded from there was Kondo, and it kept me playing for another 7 years and counting. Of course I found this place thanks to Bespinben but you know, she was first :P
Jeez now that I think about it, my life would literally be nothing without music. I would sit and stare at my walls all day. I doubt I would become the stereotypical teenager who cries over Justin Bieber or whoever it is now. I would just be... an empty shell

Does Baba yetu mean anything to you.
Also, I wouldn't be here he he never existed, so there you go.
Quote from: Bubbles7689 on January 19, 2013, 08:43:40 PMNo :3
Then It should. Baba yetu is the only piece of video game music to ever a Grammy award.
I'm sure it's much better than anything by any of the composers in the poll ::)

Well on the fame/award scale, it is, although there are much better songs than it in my opinion.
Koji Kondo: Obvious
Nobuo Uematsu: Obvious
Jun'ichi Masuda (Shota Kageyama close, though): So much iconic music.
I almost voted for Jun Ishikawa or Other (David Wise).
Tomohito Nishiura is the most BEAUTIFUL vg composer evur. Jun Ishikawa is pretty coll as well.
Koichi Sugiyama, the dude responsible for Dragon Quest music. Though I'd have to say I really like the RareWare dudes as well as Hajime Wakai.
I pretty much miss Grant Kirkhope here. Ya know, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Donkey Kong 64..
Robin Beanland is really good, and so is David Wise. I like them both. Of course, though, I'm partial towards Shogo Sakai, Keiichi Suzuki, and Hirokazu Tanaka, the first two did the Mother games, and the last one did Mother games as well as Dr. Mario, Kid Icarus, Metroid, and numerous other great games. And also became the president of Creatures Inc.
Some of the Dr. Mario themes are really excellent. I liked the Brawl arrangement of "Chill."
Uematsu absolutely, I think he's totally on his own league. Genius man. I've always liked Yuzo Koshiro's style too.
Kondo, Amaya, Wakai, and Tanaka. Also Deku is right, the Rareware people like Robin Beanland and Graeme Norgate are fantastic writers.
What!? Toru Minegishi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toru_minegishi) (Super Mario Sunshine, Multiple Zelda) isn't on this poll!
^Koji Kondo composed any music from Sunshine that was spectacular (though really the only piece that wasn't annoying was Delfino Plaza)
Sunshine is probably Kondo's weaker scores of the Mario series, but it had more than Delfino Plaza going fo it, if I may say so. Did you forget the acapella version of the Mario Bros. Theme in the secret stages? Still my all time favorite version of the piece to this day.
I remembered it, but I was only counting new compositions. And most of the other new compositions were either not so fantastic or re-arrangements of Delfino Plaza. :P
Ok then, forget Sunshine. He did the Main Theme for Twilight Princess and was a big figure in the music for the other Zelda games (GameCube and newer).
"other Zelda games"? Try all of them.

He wasn't around from the beginning though.
He came in in 2000 with Majora's Mask:
The Legend Of Zelda (1986) was composed by Koji Kondo.
Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link (1987) was composed by Akito Nakatsuka.
The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past (1991) was composed by Koji Kondo.
The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening (1993) was composed by Koji Kondo, Kazumi Totaka, Minako Hamano, Kozue Ishikawa, and Yuichi Ozaki.
The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time (1998) was composed by Koji Kondo.
The Legend Of Zelda: Majora's Mask (2000) was composed by Koji Kondo and
Toru Minegishi.
The Legend Of Zelda: Oracle Of Seasons/Ages (2001) was composed by Minako Adachi and Kyopi.
The Legend Of Zelda: Four Swords (2002) was composed by Yuko Takehara.
The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2002) was composed by Koji Kondo,
Toru Minegishi, Hajime Wakai, and Kenta Nagata.
The Legend Of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures (2004) was composed by Asuka Ota.
The Legend Of Zelda: The Minish Cap (2004) was composed by Mitsuhiko Takano.
The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess (2006) was composed by Koji Kondo,
Toru Minegishi, and Asuka Ota.
The Legend Of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass (2007) was composed by
Toru Minegishi and Kenta Nagata
The Legend Of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (2009) was composed by Koji Kondo,
Toru Minegishi, Asuka Ota, and Manaka Tominaga.
The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword (2011) was composed by Koji Kondo, Mahito Yokota, Hajime Wakai, Shiho Fujii, and Takeshi Hama.
Did I miss any?
I don't think we're talking about the same person.
Ok well this is the guy I was talking about.
And that list reminded me: Asuka Ota could be on that poll as well. Not only for her contributions to The Legend Of Zelda line, but also Super Mario 3D Land.
Yeah, see the topic was on Koji Kondo, not the other guy.
Sure but I think if Shota Kageyama made it, Toru Minegishi and Asuka Ota should be there as well.
I also left out Kenta Nagata who has written a lot of Mario stuff as well. :/ Yeah the poll is probably biased based on the video games I've played.
Apparently.
...leaving out Kirkhope like that.

Sorry to bring the thread back to this again, but that piece. It's phenomenal. I love it too Maestro. :3

How do they decide on who composes for what games? Is it just who wants to do it, or what?
Either legacy or whoever is available. Usually its just one primary composer for most of the game these days, with the other acting as an orchestrator of sorts.
Though it varies from game-to-game, company-to-company.
Koji Kondo, because he is AMAZING
Masuda for similar reasons.
And other for Grant. Because he is amazing <3
The guy or guys that wrote new super mario bros wii. And mario kart wii music. And the guy who wrote paper mario 64 music is okay.
New Super Mario Bros Wii--Ryo Nagamatsu, Shiho Fujii, and Kenta Nagata (featuring arranged themes by Koji Kondo, including the overworld theme)
Mario Kart Wii--Asuka Ota and Ryo Nagamatsu
Paper Mario--Yuka Tsujiyoko and Taishi Senda

Hey buddy, I know you said you weren't good with English--I think when you say "expectually" you mean "especially." What country do you live in, out of curiosity?
Oh... A typo. ::) ::) ::) Well thanks for telling me about it.
