Oh...it can be if you want to do songs from other paper mario games :)
Which game were you hoping to do?
Title: Re: Arrangement Project (Paper Mario)
Post by: FierceDeity on January 18, 2014, 02:35:29 PM
Hahahahahahahaha this seems like a really sneaky/elaborate way of requesting paper mario songs ;) (especially seeing as you specified your favorites XD)

I might take Chomp Attack (and possibly Battle Fanfare; don't count on that one, though).

By the way, for the sake of the arrangers' convenience, you might want to have each title hyperlink to the song on youtube. Definitely takes the tediousness out of switching tabs every time you want to listen to a song to see if you want to do it.

Also, you probably should include all of the songs from the game that aren't on site, unless you have specific reasons for omitting certain songs.

If this can get 15-20 sheets, I'm happy to give this project it's own update. I might even arrange a sheet or two myself.

So if any arrangement project gets enough sheets, it merits an update?

Okay, I was wondering because me (http://forum.ninsheetm.us/index.php?topic=4780.0) and K-Night (http://forum.ninsheetm.us/index.php?topic=4028.0) started our own arrangement projects of Mega Man 9 and Mike Tyson's Punch Out respectivly, and Bespinben is still trying (?) to get his PMD arrangements up.

Since it seems like activity is picking up on this, I'm going to make a request. There's a whole bunch of Paper Mario songs already requested in the Request board, so if someone completed one of them and posts it here it would be a huge help if you could also note that its a request.

Here's the list of all the requests:
"Bowser's Rage" (http://forum.ninsheetm.us/index.php?topic=4862.0)
"Club 64" (http://forum.ninsheetm.us/index.php?topic=4587.0)

Feedback Time!!!!

Chomp Attack - FierceDeity
-Clean up the rests in the last bar
-Put quarter note rests on beat 3 in bars 1 and 19
-I'm not sure if the constant 8vb is really necessary. Most of the time the lowest it would go is 2 ledger lines which is by no means difficult to read. Perhaps on the low G#s if you want.

Raphael the Raven - DonValentino
-The trill in bar 4 stops before it moves on, so perhaps you can find a way of notating that?
-In bar 7 the last quaver is staccato and I'm pretty sure that F# isn't part of the bass line.
-I wonder what it would sound like if you dropped the melody an octave. It sounds a bit spread at the moment
-Bar 23 onwards: Perhaps add the bottom octave on the quarter notes. Unless there's a reason for having them that way?
-I dunno if there's a way of adding some percussion inspired bits towards the end to fill it out without making it sound silly but it might be worth looking into.

Dry Dy Ruins - mariolegofan
I'm really not sure at the moment, I'll have to think about it a bit more. This is a tough one to make work on piano.

The funny thing is, I actually fixed the rest stuff, but forgot to upload that to dropbox XD
As for the 8vb, yeah, I wasn't really sure either. I felt the same thing about the G#s being the main thing needing it, but I thought it might be a little overly complicated to just 8vb those small sections. I honestly feel like it's easier to read this way, but would you rather I just take out the 8vb entirely?
Title: Re: Arrangement Project (Paper Mario)
Post by: The Deku Trombonist on January 25, 2014, 03:09:57 AM
Yeah, I really don't think ledger lines are that hard to read. I'd even question the necessity for the G#s to have an 8vb but I guess that's personal preference.

I'm just trying to find a way to write the solo in the beginning in a way that doesn't require tempo changes or writing 'ad lib'. It'll probably be a few days before I post it, since I'm rather busy.

I have an old arrangement of Bowser's Castle which I'll post when I've fixed it up.

Rosa: you can always write it like a cadenza like Olimar did in his arrangement of castle from yoshis island. Then if you want it to play nicely you can have hidden tempo changes and such.

Title: Re: Arrangement Project (Paper Mario)
Post by: InsigTurtle on January 27, 2014, 05:25:21 PM
I guess that could work out, but I don't actually know how to make cadenzas in Finale. Do you just hide the time signature and measure barlines?

You can make a giant bar of let's say 15/4 but have it display as 4/4 so it doesn't show a different time signature. You need full Finale (or someone else) to do it.

I think it would be better to arrange it so that it's easier to read, and add a rubato marking somewhere at the start. Also, tapping the same note at that speed (even with two hands) feels like it's pretty much impossible.

...I feel like giving an example of how I would do it, but I have no idea what to do either ,_,

I was gonna make it a cadenza, but that didn't seem like a very wise idea either. I think I'm just gonna leave it until some can completely overhaul it, it's just way beyond what I'm capable of.

Oh yeah this thing, whoops. So here's some random feedback

Princess in Distress:
-B Natural in bar 4 instead of Cb
-Db instead of C# in bar 23
-Could do with some articulations in the LH (long short short)
-17 might make more sense as a quarter note-quarter rest-quarter note with a tenuto over the first beat maybe?
-And putting the whole thing up an octave might capture the music box feel better

I added some of the sheets that need to be replaced to the list of songs in the OP. It'd be really cool if they could be replaced in this project, after all we don't want people reading about our amazing project only to still find crap sheets.

You could put all your sheets, Deku, and the ones that you "feedbacked" (A Princess in Distress, Attack on the Koopa Bros.,
Raphael the Raven, and Chomp Attack) Under "Accepted"

Aaaand I'll take Main Menu Theme and Tubba Blubba Fight. As for Angry Bowser (only Replacement not takin')....I dont think any one is going to do that one. Its pretty tough.

Oooh :) Mario bros. house :)

If you have any questions about the above song (Toad Town Variations) Deku, just tell me.
I was going to do all of those songs individually but they are so short, they are all in the same town (toad town), and they are all the same time signature and Bpm.
So its easier for you to check, I put all the originals in a link. They're downloadable mp3's.

Aaaand, darnit, Brassman and Rosabellis AREN'T going to be doing their's  :( (We are just waiting on Olimars song now.)

Are you sure about that last bar (and perhaps the few before it)? Those bass notes fill in the harmony in such a way that the original emptiness is lost.
Title: Re: Arrangement Project (Paper Mario)
Post by: FierceDeity on June 07, 2014, 12:23:21 AM
Yeah, I was kinda weighing that negative against the alternative of having no pulse where there's originally constant percussion. Since it doesn't really mess with the harmony or anything, I figured it'd make it work better as a piano arrangement, as sort of a substitute for the constant bass drum. I played back both a bunch of times, and I came to like this way more, because the other one really seems too empty. I mean, you have final say, but those are my thoughts on it.

Done with Koopa Bros. Tricks, and OH MY GOD FUCK THIS AMBIGUOUS MALLET TIMBRE. It's used in so many goddamn paper mario songs, and it's so difficult to discern pitches from it. There are usually two discrete pitches to it, but goddamn, I placed out of three semesters of aural comprehension classes and I still can't hear this goddamn "pipe sound" thing as well as I'd like...
But, I've put down something that I think works (really it should all be accurate except for the middle voice in measure 5, and in beats 1-3 of measure 6; those parts may or may not be accurate).

PDF (https://www.dropbox.com/s/v0iflh6gwukertn/Paper%20Mario%20-%20Koopa%20Bros.%20Tricks.pdf)     MUS (https://www.dropbox.com/s/i35smv92n0u1yce/Paper%20Mario%20-%20Koopa%20Bros.%20Tricks.mus)     MIDI (https://www.dropbox.com/s/sceuhoailp7a7nk/Paper%20Mario%20-%20Koopa%20Bros.%20Tricks.mid)

EDIT: To avoid making a triple post, I'll just mention here that theblackgiantdoghead44 seems to have requested a piece that is neither included in this project nor on the site. (http://forum.ninsheetm.us/index.php?topic=6274.0) Is "Huff N Puff Theme" not the right name for it and I'm just missing it, was it excluded from this project for some reason, or was it just forgotten?

For those who haven't been following that other thread:
Quote from: mariolegofan on June 07, 2014, 02:55:29 PMPieordie didnt do this song. This is "Huff n Puff's Theme"
Pieordie did "Huff n Puff Battle"
To be fair, I didn't even know Pieordie did huff n puff battle, so I probably should have been a bit more thorough in my search, anyways :P

MLF, does this mean we should add Huff n Puff's Theme to this project?

Also, finished Battle Fanfare.
PDF (https://www.dropbox.com/s/91gqfe84pysxpkn/Paper%20Mario%20-%20Battle%20Fanfare.pdf)     MUS (https://www.dropbox.com/s/s77gqcqfde6ezv5/Paper%20Mario%20-%20Battle%20Fanfare.mus)     MIDI (https://www.dropbox.com/s/aiul11m88h05fx0/Paper%20Mario%20-%20Battle%20Fanfare.mid)

Deku, are the repeated same-note sixteenth notes in this one playable? I did my best to work around them whenever possible, but for some of them, it seemed too strange to just tie to the second one or change the rhythm/pitch.

Could you use notes that don't modify the harmony? I know that means it's most likely just going to be doubled octaves, but that last bar does not sound like a Dsus chord in the recording.

Do all the separate .mus links in the OP mean anything special or have they been modified or something?

A little feedback

A City in the Stars - JohnK
-Some formatting issues
-Umm..this song is in 3/4 and so probably needs a fair bit of reworking

Attack on the Koopa Bros. (Replacement) - DonValentino
-Still needs that tapping thing written out like I said earlier

Mt. Rugged - FierceDeity
-Did the harmonies ever get sorted out in this one?

Quote from: FierceDeity on June 07, 2014, 07:48:25 PMTrue. Want me to just make it an appoggiatura on Eb?
(if so, I've updated the links haha)

Not on my computer right now, but I think I put that in there. Was there anything other than the last bar where I messed with the harmonies? I don't think there was, but I can check again later

It's an improvement. In the last bar of the first line (and similar bits) you could perhaps put a running arpeggio or something in there to better capture the feel. There are some enharmonic spelling things near the end but I'll get around to those later.

Don't know if I said it before, but the thing is that I don't know how to write out a rhythm in a piano staff. I know how to create a percussion staff and hide it, that's what I did.

Could someone please explain me how to?
Title: Re: Arrangement Project (Paper Mario)
Post by: The Deku Trombonist on June 30, 2014, 06:31:47 PM
Ah right.

First you gotta make it so you can get percussion playback from the piano staff. Go to Window->ScoreManager. Click the ">" arrow where it says piano to expand the list out and then expand out both [Staff 1] and [Staff 2]. Then find "Layer 4" for both staffs and change the Sound property to something that you think sounds good.

Then write the rhythms that you want using the 4th layer in the bars at the end.

Then you need to change the noteheads so it looks like percussion notation. To do this, open up Tools->Advanced Tools->Special Tools->Note Shape. Make sure you've still got the 4th layer selected in the bottom left corner. Click in the note you want to change (you can only do one at a time). Then Right-Click->Edit... , uncheck the "Use default character" box and select another notehead to use. I think the one that looks like an "X" will probably be best.

Is this needed for it to be accepted? If so, I guess I can try it...

You can do entire bars at a time if you first click on the bar, then click and drag to select all of the boxes above the notes(that appear when you select a measure). Then just double click one, change it's note head and poof, they all change. :J

btw, how does a Bravely Default arrangement project sound?  "Only" 46 tracks, and each one is arrangeable. But most have a Bass Guitar and an Electric in addition to strings, so I'm not entirely sure how that will turn out.....

Sounds great......but I'd like to do Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door first. We already got Bloop, Spitllama, Jegilmer, Donvalentino and others currently working on it or wanting to help. When this one is done, I'll offically put up TTYD Project and when that ones done, we'll do Bravely Default!!! :) Hopefully all these projects will help this site! You "don't mean to rush", but that's what you're doing. Leave the updaters to do what they do. They're sacrificing a lot of their time on a project that really doesn't have any NSM precedent, in terms of actual updates, so please just be glad they've agreed to treat it they way that they have, and accept that it'll happen when it happens.

Angry Bowser:
-Rhythm grouping issues
-Crushed notes in bar 11 (Copy/paste will insta-fix this)
-This really needs the bass line throughout, or at least some representation of the drum beat. Otherwise it's missing the rhythmic drive that makes this song.
-Perhaps go back and have a closer listen, some of the notes sound weird

Gates of Goomba Castle:
-Overlapping notes are hurting this arrangement. Transpose some octaves/remove some doubled octaves/whatever to make it work
-The upbeat could be re-written to better capture the spirit of the thing
-In bars 1, and 4-5 I'm pretty sure you don't need the quaver rests because the notes are from the lower part, not the upper
-The harmonies need some looking at

The Master:
-Have you experimented with different combinations of parts in the opening? It seems like the most prominent part isn't always there.
-Also in the opening, there is a very obvious 2-to-a-bar pulse going on in the original which is missing in the arrangement
-The pitch bending can be approximated in bars 13 to the end
-There's also some pitch bending in the bass part which can be added to the arrangement

I've cleaned a little bit the Paper Mario Medley which is already on site. I wanted to have a cleaner version for myself since I like to play it, but I thought that it would be nice to put it here too.

I didn't want to touch it too much though, so only did some formatting and little corrections:

- All song names are now between ""
- Corrected the key change in measure 12
- 2/4 in "Koopa Village" instead of 4/4
- Measure 63: corrected the third chord, F#-D# instead of Gb-Eb

And that's it. All credit goes to the original arranger, of course.

Bloop:

Kammy Koopa's Theme
-Needs a major reworking

Snow Road
-Tempo is a fraction too slow
-Most of the chords need fixing up

Gates of Goomba Castle
-Bars 4-5 could be notated clearer
-Same with bar 9 which can mostly be in one layer
-The end of bar 7 would probably make it look like a 5/4 bar when printed

Two questions.
1. It has been 3 1/2 months since the last piece was arranged. Maybe it's time to consider the project closed.......

2. I understand the reasoning behind not letting the next arrangement project start until the current one is finished: So there is not multiple projects waiting for review simultaneously. However, if the current project is closed, even if the review process goes slowly, it should be completed by the time the next project is finished.

Maelstrom, we aren't waiting for the rest of the pieces to be arranged, so I don't quite get what the "closed" thing is all about. We're currently going through the arrangements, and since there are a ton it will take a while(I guess it's time I jump in here and help out.). Bloop, do yo thing. If you finish it before we're done, throw it in here.

Edited: Here's my NEW arrangement (that I did in one long sitting) of Club 64 (http://forum.ninsheetmusic.org/index.php?topic=6762.0) (hope you like because I stayed up late on this one, but as you hear it was worth it!)

Soooooooooooo, it has been over a year since we started this thing. It would be nice to get an update for this soon. I know the updaters are extremely busy so to help them out we could help each other by fixing our arrangements to the BEST of are abilities. Then it won't take so much time for the Updaters to look through these.

Lots of note beaming should be fixed in that one. Also, make sure notes and accidentals don't collide with each other (like m. 1, 11 and 16). All A#'s should be Bb's.

The reoccurring chord is a Edim chord, so the 5th is diminished (B -> Bb).

Duh. Why didn't I realize that. Will change that later today. Got to get some school done now. Anything else regarding the notes?

I didn't add in the "extra low guitar" simply because I could not accurately figure out the notes.
Title: Re: Arrangement Project (Paper Mario)
Post by: DonValentino on February 09, 2015, 12:34:44 PM
Thanks mlf

- Well, from measures 1 to 10, I'd go with nacho2420's version (the one from his medley, that is), mainly because of the bass. That "low guitar" is way more important to the song than the chords you have. Only things I'd change on his version: measures 6 and 10 are more accurate in mael's version, and

(I believe that is the correct beaming but I'm not entirely sure...)

- This song has veeeery weird rhythms, so maybe another look at the beaming would be convenient. I'm positive measures 29, 31 and 32 can be written better.

- Articulations, specially in the part that starts in measure 11.

- Dynamics won't hurt either. At least an f at the beginning.

- I haven't checked the accuracy of the chords in the LH from measure 11 and on, but seems to be ok.

- 27 to the end: RH an octave lower.

- Stupid nitpicky stuff: the "Angry Bowser" text at the top of page 2 is missing the last "

I guess that's all from me. :J

Hmm, yes, I understand, but take a look at "Hammer Bros." from Super Mario Bros. 3, on which is based: http://www.ninsheetmusic.org/download/pdf/2097, has lots of Ebs, but still major.

Also, Deku feedbacked this one some time ago and didn't say anything about the Eb's, just that I had a B sharp on measure 14 and had to change it to Eb flat too.

This is a blues rip-off and a big part of blues is the tension between major/minor third and perfect/diminished fifth scale degrees. So I think the key can stay as A maj. Sometimes people write blues with a #4 instead of b5 but I tend to prefer b5. Up to you.

If you guys don't mind, I prefer to keep the b5. That way the bass is also somehow more consistent, with 2 A's, 2 C's, 2 D's and 2 E's, instead of 3 D's and 1 E (which wouldn't be wrong at all though). Also, it follows the same pattern over and over so it shouldn't give that much trouble to read, even if is not as clean as using a D#.

Yeah I understand your point of view, but is not something too unusual, tying two eighths with a rest in the middle. Well dunno, it would be ok in both forms tbh

Fixed some wrong notes at meas. 10 and 18.
The bass notes may sound dissonant but those are the occurring notes in the original.
Talk about quirky music! lol. Here's the edited file (https://www.dropbox.com/s/av24w9qn6g7iaqg/Paper%20Mario%20-%20Boo%27s%20Dance%20%28nacho%20edit%29.mus?dl=0)

Oh and how do you get finale and the mp3 to play together in sync, Nacho?

Will fix that.

I hit the play button on finale as the original audio starts :P
But there are obviously better ways to do it. That's just my quick way, and it isn't always perfectly in sync but it gets the job done

Title: Re: Arrangement Project (Paper Mario)
Post by: DonValentino on February 16, 2015, 08:15:46 AM
Well it's pretty good. Just a couple of things:

- In m. 9 you can write "8th-Quarter-8th" instead of tying those two 8ths. You actually did that in m. 14, just with the rest. :J

- M. 1:  You could put a mp and a crescendo to the mf if you want. Also, the way you have it notated doesn't make it very clear, it'd be better if you put a half note pickup measure, an 8th rest, then two 16ths and then the other 4. Lastly, that intro is slightly faster, write that down too.

- There's a lot of empty space below, try not to put the staff that close to the arranger and composer info. When you print it out it looks weird, everything cluttered in the upper part of the page while the bottom part is 90% blank (I talk from own experience).

- The way you have the measures distributed is good, but it's better if you have it 4-5-5-4.

In other words...  https://db.tt/hf42l6ax
Whatcha think?

PS I'm not 100% sure on the Ab's, as I don't hear them in the recording but they may well be low in the mix. I guess it's up to you if you feel really confident about them, otherwise, replace them with G's.

I just found enough time to take a short look at Angry Bowser tonight:

-The opening needs some tidying up. Beat 3 of bar 1 can be written as a quarter note and the B flat in bar 2 comes on the and of beat 2.
-The beaming is wrong in the RH of bar 6. Also the last note is long so you can probably just make that a quarter note. The same thing in bar 10 too.
-There's the background drone which you can possibly include in places throughout that section.
-In bar 11, the quaver on the and of beat 2 is staccato
-The section at bar 19 could do with the percussion parts incorporated into it.
-In the last bar the rhythm is dotted eighth, dotted eighth, eighth.

In general: incorporate more of the rhythmic feel into it and go over some of those free sounding rhythms with a microscope.

ohwait totally forgot the previous one
it was fine to me though

-I'd but the first key change in m. 6 instead of m. 7
-Use an 8vb marking at the left hand in m. 9, 13 and 17
-Change the E naturals in m. 14-16 to Fb's
-Put a double barline at the end of m. 18

Also link again
Title: Re: Arrangement Project (Paper Mario)
Post by: nacho2420 on March 11, 2015, 12:07:40 PM
-Key changes happen at the beginning of new phrases, I've seen plenty of music doing that.
-Ledger lines shouldn't be an issue at those measures since it is assumed they are octaves. Again, I've seen so many pieces with that kind of writing, plus, as a player I actually find it more confusing with all the random 8vb markings interrupting the staff. If the entire phrase in the left hand were lower, I would use an 8vb bass clef (not sure what the exact name is)
-I can't believe I keep putting the old url, my bad  :-[ Fixed it though

Your points aren't wrong, but I want to stick with my choices. I guess it's up to an updater to clarify what they want.

I'm all about making sure the arrangement is rhythmically and harmonically as accurate as the original, I'm not too worried about notation as long as it is as readable as possible.

I think the left hand B in Measure 3 is an octave lower.

I would write everything from Measure 17 to the end in the key of Db, including a key change.

If you sacrifice octaves and the cluster chords, maybe you could do something like this for that third voice?

Good catch! That B also seemed to collide with the right hand, so it'd be better off an octave lower. Done.

It's alright, but I think that makes me sacrifice a bit too much; Like that, the bass notes don't continue at the same rate and the upper voice doesn't sound as twinkly (also, the right hand is playable, but hell-ish). I tried something else though, still sacrificing the chords, but fills up perfectly (I think): [ZIP] (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/100796699/Nieuwe%20map/Snow%20Road.zip)

"Solemnly" isn't exactly how I'd describe the feeling, and it would imply a slow tempo like 60. Perhaps "Maestoso" (or "Majestically" if you want an English term).

I'd add a grace note D to the E in 14.

I'd write the tied note in 15 as a dotted half instead of a half tied into a quarter.

I'm not sure if the F's in the left hand actually change octaves. Could those chords all be just moving fifths?

EDIT: I don't like using slurs to connect two notes of equal pitch because they may look like ties. Rather I'd use tenuto marks.

Perhaps you can include the missing voice in the intro by using the left hand? Just G's, in octaves during 3 and 4, like this:

I get right on that stuff :)

Try to bit a bit more clear about what notes are and aren't pressed: m. 8 RH for example can't be played physically. I'd change the whole note into a quarter.

Also, move the last two notes in the LH in m. 16 to the first layer. It can't be physically played and it makes the measure look like a 5/4 measure instead of a 4/4 one.

Pedal :P

I think the pedal would sacrifice a bit too much of the staccato/tenuto contrast in those fifths and fourths in the right hand

Quote from: JesterMusician on April 06, 2015, 02:45:18 AM"Solemnly" isn't exactly how I'd describe the feeling, and it would imply a slow tempo like 60.

Quote from: JesterMusician on April 21, 2015, 10:57:16 PMSounds pretty good! A couple things:
  • "Pursuit"
  • I'd write a courtesy natural on the E in Measure 4, as well as on the A's in Measure 7.
  • Measure 6 (and similar figures): I would write the 3rd beat note explicitly and start the glissando half a beat later (assuming it's playable on piano).
  • The first chord of 15 should be C-G, not C-F#.
  • The 3rd beat of 26 sounds faster than 16ths; it sounds like four runs of 32nds, so I'd use a trill there on G# (writing the trill note A in parentheses for clarity).
  • Consider separating the dynamics for 13 on, since the bass doesn't change volume while the melody does.

Measure 7: RH C-A should be E-C.
Measure 12: RH Bb should have a courtesy flat.

Other than that, looks pretty good!

It would be amazing if you could get the guitar arpeggios in the bass as well, it would make the arrangement a bit more light and lively, I think.
