Title: Help Deku Get Some Dates
Post by: The Deku Trombonist on December 15, 2014, 01:11:49 AM
Hi everyone!

I've been working on sorting options for the site and it's just about all done except for one little tiny problem. For chronological order to work, we need some release dates. This is where you come in. With over 300 games listed on the site so far this could take a while, so hopefully if everyone pitches in we'll have it done in no time.
Feel free to use this topic to discuss any issues, for example if you're having trouble finding a release date for any of the games.

Details:
-We're looking for the earliest release date, regardless of the region.
-Please specify which date system you're using so I don't get confused (American or European) or even better, use full month names instead

Here is the list. I'll put a strike through the ones I've added.

ALL DONE!

Hey, I've been meaning to suggest this for a while and I want to know what you think.

The site for some reason has a tendency to group games with their remakes, particularly in the case of Pokémon. For instance, right now we have the following grouped together:

Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow
Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal
Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald
Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky

Honestly, if we were going to do it correctly it should be separated by release date like so:
Pokémon Red & Blue
Pokémon Yellow
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Explorers of Darkness
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
etc., etc., with only the tracks new to the remakes being under the remakes' sections.

The reason for this is that even though the majority of the music of the originals is usually in the remakes, it is not originally from the remakes. For instance, the track "Twinleaf Town (Day)" is from Pokémon Diamond & Pearl, later reused in the Pokémon Platinum, but it's not from Pokémon Platinum. That would be like saying the "Egg Planet" track from Super Mario Galaxy is from Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U since it appears in all of those games.

I've always thought the line was a little more blurred with Pokemon especially considering, for example, that D/P/Pt are considered to be the same generation etc etc

Here's an example: Suppose someone played Pokemon Yellow (not Red or Blue) and wanted the sheet music for Route 1. Would they necessarily know to look under Pokemon Red and Blue?

The problem is we really have no idea what our average user is. Our forum community isn't overly large but the stats seem to indicate that we have quite a large number of guests browsing the sheet archives. The forum is also largely made up of users who are aficionados on their particular favourite games/game series. So I'm generally inclined to take the "path of least wtf" with regards to things like this. Technically speaking, yes you are correct. But would the average user look at things as they are and take issue with it? I dunno about that. We already get the odd person popping in to request a song which is already on the site under its original game.

Just my 2 cents. I'm open to suggestions.

Edit: We've done it guys, Winter has found all the dates for me.

To continue with your first example, just because Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum are considered the same generation doesn't mean they should be filed together; after all, HeartGold and SoulSilver are also part of the same generation and are totally different games. Diamond and Pearl are considered the same game and share a soundtrack CD album, while Platinum was released two years later and has its exclusive tracks on a different CD.

If Pokémon X and Y are remade, for instance, are we going to edit the existing X and Y category to include the new game? It seems sort of unprofessional.

Is anyone besides me really going to care about this? I don't know. Honestly it's more that it's something that bothers me than something I know would bother the average user. I have no idea how everyone else feels about it. But the way we have it isn't correct. I'm interested to know how everyone else feels.

I agree with Slow about the Pokemon thing. It just looks awkward having some sheets say stuff like from "Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow" while another sheet in the same section would say just from "Pokemon Yellow" and such.

On the main site, the only names that should be changed are Fire Emblem Awakening (no colon, unless you go by the European title, which I think keeps the colon), and "Fire Emblem: Sword of Seals," which should be changed to "Fire Emblem: Binding Blade."

Japanese uses different punctuation in general. >_> None of the Fire Emblem game titles in Japanese have colons.

FE6 is officially called "Binding Blade" in North America, shown in Fire Emblem Awakening's Spotpass features, as well as in the Super Smash Bros. series with Trophy descriptions and stuff.

VGMusic has their Crystal midis under a separate tab from their Gold/Silver midis. Although, I digress, because the same site has all midis of Red/Blue/Yellow under the same roof. Guess they just decided to go with both approaches!

Honestly each game should be under its own banner, and I think that Pokemon is the exception that proves the rule. There are only a handful of games out there that are released "Version A/Version B" with little to no difference with regards to the scores.

Sure, some of the Pokemon games have a few different/extra tracks that aren't in the rest of their respective trilogy; so I think a few odd sheets that only belong to one game shouldn't cause a need for individual filing. The remakes should also be group with their original games for the same reasons, unless there's enough new/changed material to warrant a different banner.

Okay I know you don't play Pokémon but there is a difference between Version A/Version B, which are released simultaneously and have the same official soundtrack release, and Version C, which is released years later with new material. There's no reason to group it with A and B since the tracks are originally from A and B, not C.

I hope that made sense.

Quote from: MaestroUGC on December 16, 2014, 10:07:10 AMThe remakes should also be group with their original games for the same reasons, unless there's enough new/changed material to warrant a different banner.

I'd say the remakes' OSTs are definitely different enough from the originals. Like, almost every song from the Gen 1 remakes is at least in a different key and tempo, and a ton of songs in the Gen 2 remakes had new sections added to them or were revamped into different styles, etc.

By remake, you mean like Firered, and Leafgreen, right? Not like yellow and Emerald?

I was referring to Yellow and Emerald-like remakes; Echo misunderstood and was talking about FireRed & LeafGreen and HeartGold & SoulSilver

I'm not entirely sure that I'm following what you're suggesting. Anyway, just as another example, we have SM64 with one SM64DS track with "(DS only)" in the title on the site. There was a similar thing going with Pokemon too (like "Song A (Yellow)" or "Song B (Emerald)" etc) although I don't remember if it was finished properly. I suppose a similar question could be asked about Final Fantasy and all its re-releases, some with remixes, some with just updated sound fonts.

Quote from: Echo on December 16, 2014, 09:15:55 AMOn the main site, the only names that should be changed are Fire Emblem Awakening (no colon, unless you go by the European title, which I think keeps the colon), and "Fire Emblem: Sword of Seals," which should be changed to "Fire Emblem: Binding Blade."
THis is all that needs to be done with the FIre Emblem games.
