Hi and welcome!

It's pretty good for a first arrangement. Try doing some more if you want :J

Oh and I love music boxes, great work!

Thanks DonValentino!

The nice people at /r/piano gave me some tips on improving the notation (and to a lesser extent, the arrangement). I've updated the files to a newer version.

I decided to try out SSBM's Multi-Man Melee 2, as requested by MrKyurem (http://forum.ninsheetmusic.org/index.php?topic=6923.0). I don't know if it's any good (and at this tempo, if it's even possible), but it's certainly a good jumping off point. Cheers!

(Measure 54 doesn't render properly in Finale for me, but the PDF is okay.)

EDIT: I removed a note from the bass in 12 and 16, added a chord to 27, made some embellishments to 34-39 and brought the right hand up an octave, added a glissando to 56, and a tremolo to 59.

Not at all a bad arrangement. Good work! At first glance I would suggest that there's still quite a bit more you could do with this sheet like maybe some fermatas for a few pauses or fuller chords in the right hand. But the feel for the most part was captured which is a big thing for me. I'm sure I could spot other things if I had more time but I don't now so maybe I'll pop by later and give a more specific critique. But yeah, good job!

Post by: JesterMusician on April 09, 2015, 05:41:37 AM
Thanks JDMEK5! I made some changes after some critique from my piano-playing colleagues, some guidelines from the music typesetting reference book Behind Bars by Elaine Gould, as well as just some careful listening.

I don't know about adding fermatas to the score; there doesn't appear to be any in the song (except maybe at 33, but that notation would be a bit confusing)

I'm pretty happy with the way this turned out, especially considering I'm not an experienced pianist and this is my second piano arrangement ever. If there's no other criticism, I'm going to bring this to the submission page!

I made some more changes to Multi-Man Melee, but I also made Castle Bleck from Super Paper Mario. I'll be happy to accept feedback on either.

I made some notational changes to Castle Bleck for legibility, like beaming and time signatures, but not much for pitches or times. I also added dynamics and articulations.

Post by: JesterMusician on April 11, 2015, 11:52:33 AM
I made some more changes for clarity. I got rid of some frilly parts in the right hand because they weren't doing much and just made it needlessly complex. I have determined the awkward time signatures to be [ 3/4 ~ 7/8 ] and [ 4/4 ~ 7/8 ], but since there are only four measures in each set I decided to keep them there explicitly - it's not persistent enough to warrant an additive/mixed time signature. I think the piece is playable now, and I'm quite happy with the way it sounds.

Looking forward to hearing your feedback!

A friend of mine requested that I do this song (well actually I asked him for a suggestion for what I do next, haha). Still needs some work, I'm sure. It's really long, and there's only so much you can do without a real rock band...but here it is.

Also, I hate how Finale doesn't allow you to tie across voices - I'll stick to MuseScore for now.

Notepad, or Finale in general. And, if you want, you can always just stick a note there and press H to hide it.
And Finale's quarter rests don't look diseased
Great arrangement, though. Can't wait to see more!

I love Paper Mario music. I saw this song on the website, but was very disappointed - all that complexity reduced to just two (somewhat incorrect) lines? So I'm going to challenge it with my own arrangement!

Wow! Awesome work.....you're a genius :p
Just a few Nazi stuff:
Measures 4, 6, 10, 19, 20, 21, 25, 30, & 31 - You have Dynamics (mp mf f diminuendo crescendo) colliding with notes.

Measure 17 and where ever this reoccurs - Imo, I am much better at flats than sharps and flats are much easier for me to play :p
But in measure 17, I would recommend G sharp minor instead of A flat Minor since there are only 5 sharps instead of 7 flats but it really is up to you :) You could go either way and it'd still be right.

Measure 34 - To show all beats clearly in this measure, I would recommend an eighth rest then sixteenth rest instead of a dotted eighth......especially since it's on the 3rd beat.

Again, excellent job! Can't wait to see this one on the site :)

I don't really bother with collisions in the MUS file unless I'm making a submission - I mean, of course I can see them. I can clean it up after I have all the feedback so I don't have to deal with Finale as much.

I prefer Ab minor over G# minor in this context because the song modulates from an Ab major chord.

I don't like 16th rests, so I'll combine it into an eighth if I can. There are only four beats that need to be clearly shown in the measure. Beat 3 has a vertical column of symbols that indicate its placement: the dotted rest, the eighth note and the half note. Breaking up the dotted rest does not make the placement of Beat 3 any clearer. The tie in 11 is an example where you could make a mistake if you used a quarter note.

Great job! I've always thought that the one on site needs a replacement, and this is much better. However there is some room for improvement, some thoughts I had:

1 ) Maybe write something like "improvisational" or "freely" in the first tempo mark, since it sounds a bit improvised/free.
2 ) There are some wind chimes/Glockenspiel in the background which you're missing
3 ) Don't know if you can somehow incorporate that electric-sounds bass in a way that sounds good.
4 ) just before measure 29, there is some fast keyboard notes you're missing.
5 ) The part measure 35-42: There is a low string tremolo, I think it would be a better in the left hand than the bass you got. I think it would make it sound more treble and shivering which that part sound.
6 ) measure 42: Make a glissando from maybe beat 2 or 3 to the low C on beat 4.
7 ) measure 43- 48: There is a clear bass vocal singing straight quarters. It would be great if you would to incorporate with bass to get a clear quarter note bass sound.
8 ) measure: 53-54: in the end of measure 53 there is some chromatic scale going down.

Other thoughts:
I'm impressed by you to arrange this song, it seems so hard by to a great extent being based on percussion and various sounds, and by having a lot of hidden voices in various instruments in it.
Title: Re: Jester Musician's arrangements: "The Ultimate Show", Super Paper Mario
Post by: JesterMusician on May 07, 2015, 04:38:30 PM
Thanks for your feedback Tobbeh99! A lot of your feedback comes down to missing voices, and I know I am, but necessarily so. It's simply impossible to capture them all. Besides, I don't think it's particularly useful to transcribe those that are extreme in pitch or tempo, those that are really quiet, or those that simply don't translate well to piano, like portamentos. Sure, they may complement the song well in the recording, but some amount of triage is required. Including them may, in fact, take away from the arrangement more than they bring to it. Good design is not only knowing what to put in, but also what to leave out.

1) I originally wrote "Rubato" but I must have accidentally gotten rid of it. Fixed.
2) This is an example of something extreme in tempo. Besides, this whole introduction is drastically slower than the rest of the song, so I'd rather include the slow parts.
3) I changed it to reflect the electronic percussion as well so it's more rhythmic. Turns out every other measure is the same!
4) This is another example of something extreme in tempo. See the image for what that looks like. It also doesn't sound very good.

5) An actual tremolo, even in octaves, doesn't sound better than the bass in my opinion.
6) This is an example of a portamento, which in general doesn't translate very well to piano (besides, it's only 1 step, 1.5 tops). Since I'm not using a tremolo for preceding measures, I'd rather keep this measure markedly without articulation, except for the beginning note and the extremely low bass note on Beat 4 - I'd lose that by doing a glissando or really anything else. (However, if I did use a tremolo, I'd be able to descend with it)
7) The bass is not singing straight quarters. They're quarter notes on Beat 1 (which is in the right hand), and MAYBE Beat 3, but that would be an example of something too quiet to transcribe.
8) This is another example of a portamento, and in this case it doesn't really transcribe well to piano (think about how it would sound in practice). Besides, if I included it, I'd have to give up some of the power in those octave C's.

I have updated the files with these changes.

6 ) and 8 ) Y I noticed that, it doesn't fit with a glissando, the only thing that might fit would be a chromatic scale downwards, but don't know if that's possible.
4 ) Y that looks quite complicated, what I usually do is to when I got fast runs like that is to not write then out perfectly but to simplify them, maybe by making them sextuplets with only straight 16ths in them leading up to the high Eb or something. But that keyboard is not the most important thing and it's a sound decision in leaving it out.

Yay! "The Ultimate Show" got accepted to the site! =D

It's been a while since my last arrangement, but I took up a request from Latios - "Dream a New Dream for Tomorrow". Check it out!

Hey! Awesome Job!
I have a request for you since you like Super Paper Mario. You could do Count Bleck's Plan or World of Nothing. :)

Haven't updated this thread in a while. I've decided I'm going to keep all my music on my MuseScore account, and only make Finale versions when I'm looking to submit them.

You did a great job on spider dance, but Death by Glamour is a bit lighter on the more fierce parts of the song, like the notes borrowed from "Metal Crusher"

I already have a spider dance in the arrangement project. I have no real desire to submit it on site, so feel if you wanna submit yours make sure you do it before that project inevitably becomes official.

A little feedback on Spider Dance:

You're missing notes in the right hand in m18 and m20. (Not harmony, but missing rhythms.)
Title: Re: Jester Musician's arrangements: "ASGORE" - Undertale
Post by: JesterMusician on January 20, 2016, 07:02:01 AM
I decided to make a version of ASGORE for myself, but I won't try to submit it, unless Olimar12345 wants me to - his arrangement is just fine.

Also, it's got a Sans-level pun in the tempo marking.

Title: Re: Jester Musician's arrangements: More Undertale boss music
Post by: JesterMusician on February 13, 2016, 06:16:26 AM
I'm making it a goal for myself to do all of the Undertale boss themes (once again, for myself, not necessarily for submission). I went on a bit of a frenzy over the past few weeks or so...

Heartache (https://musescore.com/jestermusician/undertale_heartache)
Hopes and Dreams (https://musescore.com/jestermusician/undertale_hopesanddreams)
Dummy! (https://musescore.com/jestermusician/undertale_dummy)
Battle Against a True Hero (https://musescore.com/jestermusician/undertale_battleagainstatruehero)
Metal Crusher (https://musescore.com/jestermusician/undertale_metalcrusher)

Here's a link to the whole collection so far:
Undertale - Boss music (https://musescore.com/jestermusician/sets/undertale_bossmusic)

Similar to how Bergentrückung is part of ASGORE, I'm probably going to add Nyeh Heh Heh! to Bonetrousle, Ghost Fight to Dummy!, and perhaps SAVE the World to Hopes and Dreams.
