Title: What music sheets are you playing right now?
Post by: AwesomeYears on March 29, 2015, 11:59:23 PM
I don't think there is a board about this yet. (I only delved through half of the music boards :P) So tell us your current practices. It can be any instrument, any genre...

I like this topic!

I've been working really hard on Bespinben's "Memories Returned" for the past (whoa) 7 weeks and I'm happy to say I'm almost ready to present it on my YouTube channel! I finally played it near flawlessly while recording, but my camera had just run out of memory as I was playing it >__> It's a really beautiful piece, so I don't mind playing it over and over again :P

Other sheets that are in my current rotation:
- "Dragonspiral Tower" by Bespinben
- "Wigglytuff's Guild" by Dusk
- "Nuvema Town" by JDMEK5

This guy (http://forum.ninsheetmusic.org/index.php?topic=3174.0), wasn't it?

Let'see, I'm currently working on learning Arabesque No.1 and Élégie (op.3, no.1)

I'm also learning Treeshroud Forest and Sealed Ruin(PMD2)
I've arranged the Sealed Ruin one for myself. I'm using it as a study for my left hand, since it's not as agile as my right hand.

Relearning Pathetique Mov3 that I had down years ago >.>

And (slowly) learning Appasionata Mov3.  Maybe I'll have time to actually practice regularly when I'm out of school .-.

I'm going to play the first etude from Chopin for the "Méthode des Méthodes"

An etude from Chopin
wish me luck ;_;

Currently playing Bach's 9th two-part invention and "The Poet's heart" from Grieg, which I'll be performing over two weeks. Also an etude from Czerny's School of Velocity

^Chopin etudes... yeah good luck. ;-;

Learning Minute Waltz and trying not to forget Prelude and Fugue in E major from WTC book 1. Maybe I'd make some progress if I'd actually bother to practice.

+1 to Bloop for playing the TN (Trois Nouvelles) Etudes, they're underrated and commonly forgotten in comparison of the other 24.
The f minor invention is also a lovely one.

Right now, I'm playing the Chopin G minor ballade, Liszt's Liebestraum, and starting Beethoven's Pathetique. Probably will learn some Debussy as well, not sure what yet.

Okay, cool :) if I may rant, I have an exercise that is very applicable for 10/12 (not mine actually, it's Josh Wright's), called for the 4-3-2-1 exercise.
Essentially, for a given passage that is filled with a bunch of rapid notes, play through it slowly, playing each note 4 times, then 3 times, then 2 times, then regularly (1). Helps with note memorization.
You can also practice in it sections of 8 bars and memorize that way (I prefer to start at the end, so that in performance, there's always somewhere to go to, instead of stumbling over the same passage).
4-3-2-1 exercise video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKcwsHgM_6Y

I'm trying to learn Chopin étude op.10 no.1 (Waterfall). My piano teacher used to say that it was if not the hardest Chopin étude, one of them. And yes it's quite challenging with those wide arpeggios in that fast speed. But still also fun, and the sheet is really easy to read so you can get through the piece and memorize it really quickly. I've played op.10 no.9 before, and it's somewhat similar but for the left hand instead of the right hand.

I've been playing through the accompaniments for the Into the Woods score and it's very challenging but very very fun, especially if you have someone to sing while you play. Like all Sondheim really.

Yes I've looked up a few "tutorials" for the piece. In those they also mention the rotation, (it might be the same guy I watch as in your video). Personally I find the downwards arpeggios harder, so I've been focusing on those, and to fold my hand, and to make the movement feel more smooth and easy . I really like how this étude teaches you to expand your hand and also your arms, body, and how it teaches you have to use the entire keyboard. Very fruitful étude!

(Sinfonia= three part piece, later used in some of the Partitas if I remember right. Either the partitas or the suites)
Well if it's three voices, it has similar voicing issues to those you'd find in a fugue (like the second fugue of the first WTC in C minor).

Y Dream Theater is hard.

I tried learning As I Am for guitar. It went... kind of good, but the solo was impossible. My brain died by reading the tab and trying to play it, so I'd improvised during the solo parts.

I also bought this (http://www.amazon.com/Dream-Theater-Keyboard-Anthology/dp/075792008X) and tried learning my favorite dream theater songs. But first of, it was only the keyboard parts, not fully arranged piano arrangements :-\. And secondly it was hell of hard.

But I think that a lot of Dream Theater songs could sound good on piano. And some might not be so difficult like This is the Life (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkeXOEVfEu0), one song I had in mind.

Title: Re: What music sheets are you playing right now?

I can play Panic Attack (until the guitar solo), Root of All Evil (until the guitat solo) and On the Back of Angels (until the piano solo) on piano but I probably forgot all of it. The thing about Dream Theater is that it sounds easy but is awfully difficult.

I remember hitting Maestro up about recording the first book of NALAC (Nintendo A la Cziffra), then just decided not to (though technically I only talked to him about one), as I've found many of them have little sections that simply aren't playable, even with concert pianist technique.
For instance, the thumbnail that's coming up has 16th octaves with only one black key, near impossible depending on tempo.
It's very easy to create flashy effects in Finale, they don't always translate well to the keyboard though.
Title: Re: What music sheets are you playing right now?
Post by: TheMarioPianist on August 08, 2015, 01:33:00 PM
Yea, the way it's written, this one has a tempo of 80-90 BPM. Still, it's probably impossible. Well, I don't know. Maybe there's someone out there that can. But that's doubtful.

That's such a lovely piece. I know I've been a music major for a long time because I'm actually starting to love Bach.

Typically you can tell which pianists know the least about piano--they're the ones who are most obsessed with Chopin.
Title: Re: What music sheets are you playing right now?
Post by: FireArrow on August 22, 2015, 08:16:45 PM
I'd say that's more accurate from a theory standpoint than a performance standpoint (where chopin wins because, well, he actually composed for the piano.) But yeah, Bach is my all time favorite composer. His music has so much more depth to it than that of the works of any other composer.
Title: Re: What music sheets are you playing right now?
Post by: Pianist Da Sootopolis on August 22, 2015, 08:18:54 PM
Just because one is a lover of Chopin (such as myself) doesn't mean they don't also play Bach, and Beethoven, and all the rest that many only pretend to love to sound intelligent. That said, that also happens with Chopin.
It's also worth noting that Chopin, in his later works, used counterpoint just as Bach did. Check out the final movement of the B minor sonata.
The ones who know least about the piano are the ones most obsessed with the Fantasie Impromptu  ::)
Title: Re: What music sheets are you playing right now?
Post by: SlowPokemon on August 22, 2015, 08:21:26 PM
IDK it just seems to me like all the kiddie freshmen coming in think they're pretentious because they know how to play Chopin, but as they go on they realize that he's one of the most cliche, formulaic and (in many cases) dull composers, haha. But yeah, Bach's music is incredibly neat to study.

Honestly though I think my fav is Debussy. Every single one of his works is completely fascinating.
Title: Re: What music sheets are you playing right now?
Post by: SlowPokemon on August 22, 2015, 08:25:51 PM
Oh to clarify though, I don't think Chopin is unimportant and his works are lovely. But I don't understand pianists who say he's their favorite composer.
Title: Re: What music sheets are you playing right now?
Post by: FireArrow on August 22, 2015, 08:31:03 PM
Chopin is the corny "The piano is my voice, and I shall express my soul through it" composer. So that, along with being really showy, kinda creates the whole annoying, pretentious Chopin cult. I do agree that there's reasons to enjoy him though. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNhbc87JBro)

Chopin is singular in his music as he was few who did his own thing, paying no mind to what his predecessors or contemporaries were doing, I've always preferred Liszt myself.

He was that before it was cool XD
Now, you're right- everyone tries to make themselves better with Chopin.
But Slow said "the ones who know least about piano are the ones who are most obsessed with Chopin", which if you look at people like Josh Wright, clearly isn't true ;)
Similarly, look at BachScholar on YT if you want some absolutely horrid playing of Bach (and of Chopin and others, he's murdered quite a bit).
@Maestro He also criticized a lot of his contemporaries- IIRC, when Schumann sent him Kriesleriana (spell check needed)he said something along the lines of "The only thing good about this is the title page".

trills are awkward yes

About the whole Chopin - Bach thing, I do like to play Chopin more than Bach. I can see Bach being more in depth than Chopin, though.
Once, at my boyfriend's grandparents, I played through some pieces out of a book full of Chopin's nocturnes. I'd rather have played that than a book full of Bach.
Still, I only know (some of) Bach's inventions and sinfonias, and I've only played a few nocturnes, one prelude and one étude (the easiest one probably) from Chopin, so maybe I don't have enough knowledge about composers to really have a part in this.

What I see as "knowing the least about piano", is "Look, I can play Für Elise and this cheesy 4-chord songs with simple melodies that sound beautiful!"

also to get back on the original topic

I have a pretty neato program for my junior recital.

Chopin - Impromptu Op. 29, No. 1
Bach - Prelude and Fugue in F Minor, BWV 881 (No. 12 of TWTC book 2)
Mozart - Rondo No. 3 in A Minor, K511
Debussy - Sunken Cathedral (No. 10 of Preludes book 1)

I have the Chopin memorized, and the Mozart is getting there, while I can play through the prelude and some of the fugue just fine. Haven't really started on the Debussy, but I'm not anticipating issues with it since I had such a good time working on a prelude of his last semester. ("The Sounds and the Perfumes Swirl in the Evening Air")

One of the benefits of not being a music major is that I can play what I want when I want for my own amusement. And I'm not forced to perform on an instrument that I have no real attachment to.

I don't know if this counts, but I've been trying to transcribe the keyboard solo at the end of this video and it is impossible.

Honestly I don't think I'll ever finish it but if I do you can bet it'll go in the "Personal Arrangements" section of this forum...

@MaestroUGC: One of the benefits of being a music major is that you have better musical facilities to play what you want, when you want, for your own amusement, without spending as much time/effort practicing it. Nothing wrong with not being a music major but those who are music majors aren't really forced to do anything other than get good at their instrument and learn the fundamentals of music. Also, people become music majors because they want to play the instrument that they've majored in.

Printed out some sheets I'll try to learn and maybe later, also upload a video of me playing.
And I tried the Chrono Chross song "Dream of the Shore Near Another World" arranged by Brawler4ever and edited by Bespinben, and it was seemed really pleasant to play. Bespinben's beaming facilitated greatly and the hands coordinated so well with covering the middle arpeggios. Truly enjoyable and the song is also so beautiful! I just love those songs that both are beautiful and that feels relaxed and pleasant for the hands to play.

Ah yes this sheet. I did the same a couple of weeks ago. Can't say how much I love this song from a game I've never played before. At first glance the beaming looks weird but when you actually start playing it, it's ridiculously intuitive. ;D

I'd prefer something non game related so I don't feel like I'm misinterpreting the piece's feel (since I probably haven't played the game it's from) but I'm open to anything. I really like flowy songs or something that's isn't just fast and choppy. Lots of emotion. Idk if I'm explaining this well or not lol

@braixen I liked some of the first video and the second, but when I looked I couldn't find sheets for either :<

@PDS idk I'm thinking about playing that for the first time and learning the repetitiveness of the quieter parts of the RH and it's making me bored just thinking about it lol. Nothing wrong with the song, it just seems annoying to read and probably won't get me back into playing

Bach's fugue in D major WTC bk II?
https://youtu.be/ju6xpqqVZU4?t=24m41s (https://youtu.be/ju6xpqqVZU4?t=24m41s)

I have an arrangement of this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpDohlJuRfc) and this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfqJYk6COmY) if you want? That's game music though.

I honestly don't know many slow and flowy songs because they usually don't fit in my tiny attention span ;3. I wouldn't worry about it if you can't find anything that piques your interest.  Don't play piano for the sake of playing piano, play piano because there's a song you really want to play. Playing for the sake of playing only works if it's your passion or something corny like that.

It's actually been going better than I anticipated. I've been doing a chromatic scale exercise where you play everything except C's and F's with 3 and 4.
Example:
C - C# - D - D# - E - F - F# - G - G# - A - A# - B - C
5    3     4    3     4    5   3     4    3     4    3     4    5

Which movements of the Beethoven?
I'm playing the first for an exam tomorrow, the second is basically learned just needs some actual formal work other than just playing through it. The third isn't learnt yet, probably will be by the end of 2015.
It's a great piece, but it's a lot harder than most people think. To play well, that is.
There are also parts that are easier than they sound, and parts that are FAR harder than they sound..

Performing in a student recital Friday with this. Lovely, lovely piece. A-flat is my favorite major key (though D-flat is certainly up there: the more flats the merrier), so it's still a gorgeous thing to play even after tons of practice.

Good luck! That's probably my favorite of the set, along with the F minor. Great piece, and I'm sure you'll play it well~
In good timing, I was just told to select some new repertoire. Here is my brainstorm list (I can only pick one piece per each of the style periods)
Baroque: My teacher recommended that I learn a Bach Partita. I chose this one.
Classical: Beethoven: Sonata in D minor, Op. 31/2, "The Tempest" (1st movement)
Romantic: This is where I'm torn a ton. I'm probably going to go with the Chopin Nocturne in D flat, Op. 27/2
Impressionistic/20th century: Debussy: Reflets dans L'eau
Subject to change, though. Might switch out the Chopin for some Schubert.

I love you! You should post yourself playing when it's done!

...anyways, the first thing I'd do is highlight where in the piece the theme shows up, or chunks of the theme you recognize. You want to "bring out" the theme, so think of the "Theme" as the main melody that is constantly being handed off between the voices with whatever else going on being the accompaniment. It doesn't necessarily have to be the entirety of the voice for it to be worth bringing out. For example, take the one in E major (https://youtu.be/EMEITKQI7ao?t=1m4s). Notice how he brings out the tell-tale "bum-bum" every time, even if it isn't leading into the the main motif (measures 3 and 4 are the most obvious example.) For stretto (since yours has a good deal of it iirc), you wanna bring out the voice that's most recently introduced - just make sure the other voices in the stretto are still more prominent than non-stretto voices. The one in C major is a pretty good example (https://youtu.be/0KQW2YnCUrE?t=2m7s) (3:33 is like stretto's final form :3)

To put this into practice, whenever you're slow practice, exaggerate this voicing. Bang out the highlighted parts whilst playing everything else pianissimo, then once you get that down you can focus on being more subtle. If this is something you struggle with, you can always do scales playing one hand forte and the other piano.

p.s. Voicing properly between two voices in one hand is really tricky and sometimes impractical, so don't worry about that one two much.

I think this étude perfectly represents how I've been feeling for the past little while. But this one is actually rather difficult, what with the large leaps, large intervals (I have to roll the 12ths and stuff), control, speed, etc... But it's in Eb minor (or D# minor, rather), so I *need* to learn this...

On the side, I've been learning "Link Awakes" or "Link's Awake" from Link's Awakening (I've always been fond of that one), and Milonga del ángel. Both are fairly easy, but I still like spending time on them because I like them.

Ahhh, this is a beautiful program <3

The Beethoven Op. 81a is particularly beautiful. But what makes it awesome is the program behind it, and some guy has an entire collection of Beethoven lectures, of which the Op. 81a one is a part of. Won't spoil the details, but dang, you've got to know the story! :D

(also it's called "les adieux". hehe. "lebewohl" is the first movement.)

~

Currently doing Mendelssohn's futher-mocking Rondo Capriccioso. The first section requires you to play like an angel, and then suddenly it goes into this mad rush that needs you to tap the keys with a feather touch and hard fingertips at the same time. And then comes a mad flurry or arpeggios and flourishes before the final recap. Still using that firm feather touch. how even

Oh, and Debussy's Estampes Mvmt I. Beautiful piece there. :) not just because it's asian-sounding and i'm asian btw, it's really a good piece.

Les Adieux is the french word for "goodbye" or "farewell". Lebewohl is the german word for it. Seeing as Beethoven was the latter, I think it's perfectly appropriate to use it for 81a ;)

Les Adieux is the french word for "goodbye" or "farewell". Lebewohl is the german word for it. Seeing as Beethoven was the latter, I think it's perfectly appropriate to use it for 81a ;)
But yeah, I've seen the lecture and I know the story behind it, it's a great piece!

Oh! That's really interesting to know haha. Probably should have checked it up, but oh well. At least I know now! :)

Aaand thank you! :) No stakes are involved in learning those pieces (unlike yours haha, learning for any exams or competitions mostly just suck), so the heat isn't on though, hehe.

Although I personally prefer faster interpretations of this, I've still got a bit to go on this one.

Also, because my teacher isn't a fan of Bartok, I've decided to try out some pieces from Out of Doors, Barcarolla and Musiques Nocturnes.

This song is so good, but it's so bloody hard!

The first part is ez pez for me, the second part is already hard enough, but I can work around it but the third part is impossible as a 14 year old lol.

IMO that's easily the hardest of the nocturnes mechanically speaking (though not to take away from the large musical difficulties as well). The only ones I could think of as harder would be the Op. 62 nocturnes, since they're very characteristic of later Chopin; very improvisatory and all over the place, lol.

So far, I know I need to flip a few tied note stems, and maybe a few clef changes instead of that LH 8va.

Also a little surprised how many people know about Steins;Gate on this site.
Is it just from the anime?

I haven't learned the Kreisleriana yet, but IMO, Movements 1, 3, 5, 7, and 8 sound pretty cool. ...Except for Movements 1 & 3's middle sections and the end of Movement 7. (Yeah, I'm not a fan of slow music, although Movement 2 isn't bad for being that slow...)

I'd like to learn the whole thing, but the first movement is the one that really captures my attention.
As is often the case with Schumann, I can't justify learning a whole set of pieces when only two or three stand out, and the rest is mostly musical rambling.

As is often the case with Schumann, I can't justify learning a whole set of pieces when only two or three stand out, and the rest is mostly musical rambling.
Schumann's prone to musical rambling no matter your definition of "musical rambling": several of his pieces are associated with "Eusebius" (slower, dreamier, more introspective) and/or "Florestan" (faster, more extroverted, more impetuous, more passionate). Yes, and/or: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasiest%C3%BCcke,_Op._12 contains an analysis of of Schumann's Fantasiestücke, Op. 12 with some of the pieces tagged as both "Eusebius" and "Florestan".

Unfortunately, I'm a pretty big fan of "Florestan" music and am generally turned off by "Eusebius" music (although the "Florestan" sections of "Eusebius and Florestan" pieces generally redeem them in my ears). Probably my favourite "Eusebius" music (such as Liszt's Transcendental Etude No. 6 in G Minor and instrumental versions of Wagner's Pilgerchor) are ones with long melody notes and a very busy accompaniment (you can argue that the accompaniment provides "Florestan").

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Getting back on topic, Stephen Chatman's "Spring Celebration" was one of the etudes I had to play for piano exams when I was younger, and I think I've gotten a lot better at it since. It sounds pretty cool for a song with tons of accidentals, a blurry sense of key, and a vague C tonic. The below video does not do this song justice, IMO:
I personally play it with a strong progressive rock influence--snappier chords, stronger accents, and more aggressive drive.
So I bring Gusty Garden Galaxy to my piano teacher so I can learn it. I picked this piece because it seemed like good practice for left hand jumps and triplets against eighth notes. My piano teacher says that the song looked very difficult and to take it very slow. I get home and learn the song about 10 beats slower than marked in about an hour and half. I now realize that I could've easily put this song in a 2 hour learning session  :P
One hour into this, and holy crud it's amazing. It's one of the best VGM sheets I've ever laid hands on (Deku's Ocean Palace, Seb's Starship Mario, Lat's Route 201 being some other nice examples hehe). I'm definitely recording this sometime in the next 36 hours, and when it comes out I'll have a nice little write-up on why it's awesome to come with it, ahaha <3
Really though, this sheet makes a passionate pianist extremely happy. So glad to have picked it up :)
I got some sheet music for christmas present. And one of them was Liszt Liebestraum ...no.2. I didn't even know there were more than 1 piece named "liebestraum" but apparently there are 3 (from what I know) and "the famous one", which I wished for as a Christmas present, is no.3 and I got no.2. But I'm not disappointed for that because I found the 2:nd one to be an interesting piece of music itself, and a piece I hadn't heard before. It's also feasible for being a Liszt piece (I've tried, and got on music sheet, La Campanella which, even though I can play it... almost decently in terms of technique, is still incredibly difficult). And I find Liszt's music very interesting and very emotional, could even say "entirely based on emotions". And I've understood that you should highlight the melody and also, after playing through the entire sheet, the different characters of the different sections. But, at first, I didn't understood that you could roll the larger chords, but realized it later after listing to a recording of it.
But I'm working a bit on it, even though it is far from being a favorite piece of mine. And I'll see if I might be able to play it completely someday (since I got a full time job ::)).
Recently printed out two sterotype classical pieces for cello -
Suite 1 for Solo Cello - JS Bach (BWV 1007)
[close]
Actually written in a not-impossible key and from sight-reading Prélude I can tell that Bach knew the limitations of a cello. The bowing seems awkward at places and I'll have to get used to it.
Spring (La Primavera) - Antonio Vivaldi (solo violin transcribed for cello)
[close]
Not looking forward to some of the practice sessions for this one. It wasn't made for the cello (violins are tuned G3-D4-A4-E5, Spring is in E maj; cellos are tuned C2-G2-D3-A3), so some parts don't transcribe very well. Some parts also had to be brought up an octave to be physically playable on the cello, notably in Allegro m44+46 (1:51). Trills are everywhere.
Don't know why I've been bitten by the bug to play this piece lately:
I selected this piece to practice back when I took piano lessons (before university), and I'm surprised how much of the piece I still remember how to play (I've graduated from university). The great thing about this piece is that it still sounds pretty good when I play it slower than indicated (unlike a lot of fast music).
A bonus: I'm significantly worse at this piece than the first one, back then and now:
Curse you, Bars 63-71 and its large leaps in the left hand...
Mozart - Piano Sonata No. 4 in Eb Major (K 282)
I was thinking about playing some classical music for piano, and after googling "Mozart piano solo" a very rigorous selection process, I came across this one. The first movement is relatively easy, and it sounds very nice. Again I get the feeling that this piece was written with the limitations of the piano in mind.
I'm working on my biggest piano challenge which will probably take a lot of time; I'm going to try playing the whole of Debussy's Images (book 1 and 2). I've been working on the first piece (Reflet's dans l'Eau (Reflections in the Water)) and it's SO HARD but worth it. The part starting at 2:50 is a beast, though.
Aside from that, I have been playing Liszt's Liebestraum no. 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4XEPdYO5mM) and Debussy's Rêverie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqXwzUW_fhM)
If you are interested and have the time, pianist Emile Naoumoff made an 48 minute video talking about the first piece. It's meant to be a lesson I think, but it's moe like a presentation with a few technical practice tips thrown in. Debussy seems to have taught the piece to Emile's teacher himself too.
Don't take this the wrong way, but when I read "I think I miss the point" of Debussy's Images I just started laughing for some reason
I guess my recommendation is to spend more time with Impressionism? The whole point is to be kind of enigmatic and sort of suggest things instead of outright stating them. Nothing solid, just kind of a blur of colors. When you're hearing it, there's usually this sense like you're missing something.
I'm playing a couple of NSM sheets. Namely:
Chrono Cross - Dream of the Shore Near Another World (Arranged by Brawler4Ever; Edited by Bespinben)
Fantastic sheet! Lovely. And Ben's edits are really fantastic on this one. Really fun to play and the notation makes sense.
Skylanders: Giants - Skystones (Arranged by Tobbeh99 (me)). Really fun little piece to play. If you want something easy and fun and a pretty chill tune, then I can recommend this.
Personally, I feel like I put in a ton of work on all my arrangements. But when you play fun arrangements, it really feels worth it and it feels like you're doing something great (for other people), which is fun. :)
I hadn't played sheet music in a while, so recently I started printing sheets for Good Bye Lenin! by Yann Tiersen. I've now played almost all themes (that were included with the sheet music, there's more on the soundtrack that nobody made sheets for, probably because they don't actually include piano), but I also replay others, as I really love the soundtrack. :) Almost all pieces are rather easy to play, too, which is nice, as I don't read sheet music very well, and if it'd be too complicated I would be looking at my hands more than at the sheet.
