Title: The Legend of Zelda discussion
Post by: Nitro Indigo on April 06, 2016, 12:06:02 PM
Since there was a lot of Zelda talk on the E3 thread, I decided to make a new thread for it so the E3 thread doesn't remain derailed forever.

Here's a few topics to get us started:
- When is Zelda U coming out?
- What games would you like to see?
- Do you want any more remakes?

- Zelda U for NX.

I'd like to see a Spirit Tracks sequel. Or a game with a villain with an actual motivation beyond "taking over the world is cool LOL". LA, TWW and ALBW had the most interesting antagonists, in my humble opinion.

"Yuga, Paras Paras Yuga!"

True. Maybe I'm just jaded because I've never been into a Zelda game unspoiled.

On a completely unrelated note, a few years ago, the GAME in Hamely's (this big toystore in London) had loads of new copies of Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland for some reason.

Plot twist: the main antagonist of Zelda U is Tingle. =P

(Should I get Rupeeland? And why are the three age ratings all different?)

Does anyone else here have a soft spot for Spirit Tracks? I have an entire fanfic sequel planned out, but it's so convoluted that I can't seem to write it down... and I keep imagining it as an actual game, even though it realistically wouldn't work as one...

I have a soft spot for Spirit Tracks! :D

It was one of the few handheld titles of the series that I played diligently. I had Oracle of Seasons as a kid and the GBA version of ALttP (though I never got to try Four Swords because, you know, link cables and stuff), but I never internalized them as much as with Spirit Tracks. People dislike it for putting the transportation on rails, literally, but I actually love that. It lets you enjoy the scenery (which is actually decent) and enjoy the ride more. You also start to memorize the whole kingdom in a way. It feels like your home. Oh, and that music! Great game.

I like both the touch screen games, I was fine with that sort of thing.
I can't decide which I like more though because sailing is fun but so is the whip D:

My story with Spirit Tracks is... interesting.
I vaguely remember wanting to buy Spirit Tracks some time in 2010, but I didn't. While it was the first Zelda game I played, it wasn't the first one I owned. I had previously downloaded Four Swords and The Minish Cap onto my 3DS (which broke in October 2012; luckily, I got a new one), but was too nervous to play either of them. I almost brought Spirit Tracks one day in November 2011, but for some weird reason I was too nervous to buy that too. I decided to find out what the game was like... by looking up a YouTube video of Sky Tower, then clicking through related videos until I found some Spirit Tracks videos. Incidentally, even though I'm from England, I'm more used to the American names because of these videos. Also, between while looking for Spirit Tracks music, I discovered the A Link to the Past Soundtrack.
Anyway, through reading the comments on those videos, I learned more about the game... and eventually found out all the spoilers, with the help of ZeldaWiki. When I finally brought it on February 11th 2012, I didn't play it until the next day, then put the game down 12 days later and couldn't pick it back up again until August 2014. In the meantime, I watched the ending cutscene on YouTube multiple times. Oops.
Still, my nervousness about playing the game caused me to come up with lots of crazy ideas about what it would be like. While most of those ideas were completely wrong, they still gave me a sense of "wonder" about this game.
In the interval between Nov '11 and Feb '12, I also kept watching the trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-tJnmNP5ow&list=PL2AvyXVja4Hj4f8KXgLlyIsvT0BfKZyTl&index=2&nohtml5=False) on the Wii's Nintendo Channel (*MLG sad music plays*). The music completely blew my mind; I never thought I could like any video game music more than Sky Tower. I was wrong. I like the trailer version more than the in-game version.

Here lies the Nintendo Channel.
2006 - 2013
(I think...)

Now that you mention it, I'd just like to see them reuse Molgera's boss theme in another game for another boss. At the very least, I'd like another Zelda game where every boss has a different theme.
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion
Post by: mikey on April 06, 2016, 01:38:24 PM
bosses usually do have different themes now
I know Skyward Sword did with Koloktos being "that theme"
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion
Post by: cashwarrior1 on April 06, 2016, 01:50:16 PM
Well, only some games had different themes. The latest zelda game, triforce heroes, didn't have different themes. When the bosses have different themes, it feels good...

Rumors are spreading that Zelda U will be a cross-platform release with the NX, sort of like Twilight Princess but without the gap between releases. Or maybe with the gap between releases. IDK.

I love it when zelda (or any video game) re-incarnates bosses from previous games. Did anyone notice that the ice boss in triforce heroes, "Blizzagia" is just an ice version of Volvagia from the Fire Temple in Ocarina of Time?

I may have said it before somewhere but I would be pretty frosted if the new Zelda came out on NX rather than WiiU (not that I think it will). The anticipation for that game was one of my biggest reasons for getting a WiiU and if that gets shot down, I'm not going to be happy.

They said it was coming on the Wii U... But they never said it wasn't coming on the NX... They might pull a Twilight Princess on us and release the same game on the Wii U and on the NX as a launch.

Where was it stated that it's coming out on NX...? People on Zelda Universe have started calling it "Zwoonix", as if it's definitive fact that Zelda U will be multi-platform.

What do you think the Lorule versions of other games would be like? I asked this same question a while ago on another website (http://www.fimfiction.net/group/199479/zelda-crossovers/thread/236662/lorule-versions-of-other-games), and I actually got a really good response.
To start us off, I'll throw out ideas for Lorule Spirit Tracks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zL1yrBQw-iw).
...I don't have many ideas.

  • This version of Ravio doesn't have unexplained seeing powers.
  • Since there are no sages in Lorule, I assume there won't be any other special sevens. Which means no alternate universe Staven/Byrne/Grovyle/Bucky. D= (But also no apathetic, annoying old women! =D)
...I don't have many ideas.
I never said they confirmed it for the NX, just saying they never said it wouldn't come out on the NX.

I don't think they're going to go back to spirit tracks :P But they might go to the same land... Wait a second!!! Game theory time!!!

It wasn't a prediction it was imagination. Unfortunately, the Zelda series has a habit of introducing new ideas that we never see again outside of a few trophies in Smash Bros. And there aren't even any ALBW trophies.

So in Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, you went to the land of Termina. Game Theory already proved that Termina is just Link's death world... or is it? Link dies by falling down a tree trunk in the Lost Woods. In Ocarina of Time, you can warp to different areas of the game by going through trees in the Lost Woods... see where I'm going? Link fell down the tree trunk and was transported to the land of Termina, but he was dead. He went through a ghostly journey through the land seeing new places, but familiar faces.
The land of Termina consists of 5 areas: Clock Town, The forest/swamp, The snow/mountains, The ocean, and a desert/canyon. I'm bringing up land because guess what's in Spirit Tracks? A tower in the middle, a forest, a snow area, mountains, an ocean, and a desert... These lands are pretty similar. My theory states that the land of Termina and Hyrule from Spirit Tracks are the same. Link was transported to the Spirit Tracks Hyrule via Lost Woods, however, he was transported there in (1) a different timeline and (2) 200 years before the events of Spirit Tracks, so obviously the land would have changed and Link's vision of it was based off of his memories from Hyrule.
This is all I have, but if I put more research into rather than going solely off of memory, I might have more.

unfortunately, this is a completely stupid theory cause it completely disregards the fact that skull kid was wearing majora's mask the entire time.

I thought Termina was a parallel of Hyrule, and not Hyrule itself. I don't buy into the "ooooo link is dead!! coma theory!" bullshit because it's cliche and stupid.

I like the Link is Dead theory video (mainly because of PBG), but I don't like how people on Miiverse try to pass it off as fact.

Should I make a remix of Minish Village? I've put a snippet of it into two of my remixes already, but both times the audio went all weird around the part it was inserted because of the instrument plugin thingy I was using.

Also yes, do a remix on Minish Village... I think that song is fairly addictive.

Hey how about my theory?

The moon was going to crash in Hyrule so Link was trying to escape w/ Skull Kid but Skull Kid drank some strong juice and put on a mask. Link jumped down the tree to escape inevitable doom, but the moon shrunk to tiny size and followed him in. Then the moon put on the Giant's mask and went in the sky but the gravity was too strong so it bounced a signal off mars onto the sun and back to Termina and the result was the moon crashing into terminal.

It's so flawless it must be trueeeeeeeeeee  lolololol jk

I agree tbh, this is how I've always seen Termina, a parallel dimension that is doomed to end because of the moon falling and such. That's why there's so many people who look familiar to Hylians, but they aren't the same.

Actually, it was Honk from Hamsylvania. =P

I once saw a theory (on ZeldaWiki of all places) that Termina was made of bits of every other Zelda location that had come through wormholes. I also once saw a theory that Bulbins originated from New Hyrule, and migrated to TP Hyrule on the Child Timeline, but they didn't migrate on the Adult Timeline because of the flood.
Also, according to TV Tropes, Spirit Tracks and Twilight Princess have the same plot. Um...

The only that doesn't make sense is how there's a sky beneath the lost woods which takes my theory come in play, that Link was transported to there through Lost Woods tree teleportation. But I guess we'll have to go with what Nintendo intended in the game, ugh... Link got high.

Reminds me of how people take the line in Phantom Hourglass when Joanne says that she's been searching for Linebeck for a hundred years way too seriously. I almost also typo'd Linebeck as "Lonebeck".

Also, the "We are in another world. We must get back to the world of the Ocean King!" line never made much sense to me. Who said it? Weren't they in the World of the Ocean King when they said it? Why did it take Nintendo 27 years to label the textboxes in Zelda games?

What happened to Linkbeck II? He visited the world of Hytopia! (Subject change) I think Triforce Heroes happens in between Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. Why? Because when they find this new continent, explorers are sent out. Eventually they all find Hytopia and blah blah blah story happens. There is a story book at the end of the game which means it's a story being told. This could possibly be a story being told to kids by Niko after the events of Spirit Tracks. Come on Nintendo, when are you going to update the Hyrule Historia?

This is almost true. TFH takes place a good century or so (read:indeterminately long amount of time) after ALBW, which takes place a good century or so after ALttP. It was confirmed by Aonuma, I think, in an interview a little before the game's release.

What dungeons do you want to see in a fresh Zelda title? I think we need some more imaginative forest temples, since the only one I really enjoyed was OoT's forest temple. SS forest temple was kind of boring to me but you got to use the beetle I suppose
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion
Post by: Nitro Indigo on April 10, 2016, 10:49:11 AM
Honestly, as much as I'd like to see voice acting in a Zelda game, these recent leaks are so un-Nintendo-ish that they sound like someone's wish list. =/

As for dungeons, The Minish Cap and Skyward Sword have some of my favourite dungeons in the series because they're so creative. *Remembers Lanayru Mining Facility* Or not...
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion
Post by: Ōkami~MD on April 10, 2016, 10:54:19 AM
Lanyard mining facility was awesome.... I thought

The puzzles weren't really puzzles though, more like things that felt like you were forced to do it so you could hurry up and get on with the story
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion
Post by: Nitro Indigo on April 10, 2016, 11:05:43 AM
The music in Lanayru Mining Facility was way too repetitive (you need to be some kind of anti-wizard to make music that sounds more repetitive than the Phantom Hourglass field theme), I kept getting knocked into pits by beamos, the interior just looks bland, and it goes on for ages. Thankfully, there's also Ancient Cistern, a water dungeon that isn't confusing, with awesome music and a unique theme.
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion
Post by: Ōkami~MD on April 10, 2016, 11:37:31 AM
Hmmm I like ancient cistern too, but it didn't feel like a water dungeon to me, probably because it was the second Zelda game I played after OoT.

On the subject of lanayru mining facilities Timestone mechanic, what do you think about it being reused in the sandship. I felt the Sandship is by far THE best Zelda dungeon but so far have not met someone who agrees with me :/
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion
Post by: Nitro Indigo on April 10, 2016, 11:53:54 AM
I don't remember the Sandship very well, but I really liked the sailing part before it. I also really like the Lanayru area, because of the robots (they're my second-favourite Zelda race after the Minish, because they're such an interesting concept) and (the rest of) the music.
Bells? Woodwinds? Emotional? Yes please.
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion
Post by: cashwarrior1 on April 10, 2016, 12:36:14 PM
For a 3D Zelda game, they need to make a dungeon with any theme that is not inside, but more out in the open like the pirate ship from Majora's Mask.

For a 2D Zelda game, they should make a dungeon that you go through it twice or a couple times, like mermaid's cave from Oracle of Ages.

I kept thinking of Sky, Desert, Mining, and forest when these are pretty over-used.
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion

Minecarts. We need more minecarts. Unless they're like the minecarts in Oracle of Seasons. I'm not very good at that game.

Wait... I just realized... are the timeshift stones basically Oracle of Ages lite?

The focus for Zelda Wii U is "rethinking set entry points to dungeons", or something equally mission-statement.  We saw a clip of a race on Hyrule Field with some eye guy.

Anyway, the gender thing obviously doesn't affect me, since I'll just continue to choose male but anyone who thinks voice acting would be a good idea should go play star fox or something and leave Zelda alone!

I think how Aonuma worded it is that he wanted actually getting to each area/dungeon to be a puzzle in and of itself, and having multiple entrances to a dungeon is just part of that. Makes the world seem bigger and allows for individualized adventures.
Quote from: NocturneOfShadow on April 10, 2016, 12:48:01 PMAnyway, the gender thing obviously doesn't affect me, since I'll just continue to choose male but anyone who thinks voice acting would be a good idea should go play star fox or something and leave Zelda alone!
Why do you think Zelda would be better off without voice acting? (side-note that the leak says that all characters besides Link would have voices, and I think that's the way it should be) It's so story heavy already that, honestly, voice acting would bring in players who get bored by endless textboxes (I'm looking at you, Kaepora Gaebora) and give NPC's even more character. I loved Twilight Princess because nearly every side character was memorable. I think voices would enhance that.

That's a good point. If they put voice acting into a Zelda game, it'll take forever to come out in Europe.

I find the categories for Spirit Tracks (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Spirit_Tracks) on Wikipedia kind of funny because they make it sound a lot darker than it actually is (well...). Someone needs to take a screenshot of it, without showing the rest of the page, and show it to someone who's never played the game.

Instead of going on a rant about voice acting, just realize that (1) this is just a leak, it might not be true, (2) voice acting does not change any form of gameplay, and (3) you could just not have sound on if you like to read text boxes so much. (You want to listen to the music? Find it online or just deal with it.)

I feel like a lot of people debunk it for the sailing and art style and don't go past that much in terms of complaints. I mean, to be fair, they CAN be valid complaints but not if it's the only thing you can say, and don't have a proper answer when someone asks you "but why".

The Wind Waker, except everyone is a Pokémon. (https://fictionpad.com/author/NitroIndigo/stories/34545/Secret-of-the-Great-Sea) I've even written down plans for the sequels. I currently need to write the scene where you meet Ganonspork in the Forsaken Fortress.

Phantom Hourglass was my first Zelda game, I think it was pretty fun and challenging, but for an experienced Zelda player, it's very easy and probably boring. It's most enjoyed while traveling in my opinion.

It's a Well Played session for my internship this semester. I'm basically taking a deeper look into Majora's Mask, thematically, instead of a "it's a fun game" route. While the gameplay of cycling through time directly correlates to the story, I'm trying to hone in some aspects of the story that I feel often are overlooked.

Oh yeah, I was gonna talk about it how it's really about the people of Termina in the end. Link goes more as an unsung hero, hardly anyone remembers or acknowledges his deeds, only if you did their quests on the last cycle and whatnot. It's about the townsfolk dealing with the end of the world, their last moments, the last things they want to do before the moon falls. Whether they accept or deny death makes them unique, and the way they do it. Anju and Kafei accept their death, knowing they'll be happy in death together. The mayor refuses to believe because he wants the carnival to be a success, but perhaps deep down knows that the moon is going to fall, and nothing can be done.

It's a hopeless town, until Link comes along. How he exactly ended up in Termina is, well, still up for debate, right?
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion
Post by: Dudeman on April 11, 2016, 07:53:49 PM
Were you thinking about touching on each of Termina's main areas representing the five stages of grief? It's almost necessary material to cover when doing a Majora's Mask analysis.

Well, it's not inconceivable that he ended up in Termina exactly as the game presents it (he falls down a tree) since, if he was dead, surely everybody else would be dead, and then they wouldn't be afraid of dying cause the moon.....?

Quote from: ZeldaWiki Wind Waker articleLink yells "Come on!" when he calls Medli, Makar, or a statue. This marked The Wind Waker as the only canon Zelda game to date in which Link has spoken in actual words until the release of Twilight Princess, in which Link can be heard yelling "Giddy-up!" as he rides Epona. In The Adventure of Link, a textbox does say "I found a mirror under the table" at one point, but the Japanese version used no pronouns and is written in much the same way as the "You got" speeches (that is, it's from Link's perspective, but not him speaking). Other characters also speak actual English words, most notably Beedle, who says "Welcome!", "Thank you!" and "Bye!".

As for role-reversals, I sometimes like to imagine a Spirit Tracks AU where Link gets hit by the Ebil [sic] Purple Laser while protecting Zelda. Maybe it could go with another (http://kaialone.deviantart.com/art/Demon-Byrne-495834871) AU (http://kaialone.deviantart.com/art/Lokomo-Cole-495834710) I've seen?

Overall voice acting gives video games a more cinematic experience (I'd hope at least) and I think Nintendo would rather see Zelda be enjoyed first and foremost as its own medium, then a cinematic, rather than embellishing the cinematic qualities of the game series (which I do really enjoy, but in its own special way).
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion

For me I like not having any voices because when I see a new Link, I can imagine a new voice for him that suits. It helps the new Link grow on me that much faster and that much more personally.

...in all seriousness, quicktime events sacrifice gameplay for the sake of "looking cool." They require little to no effort, they aren't innovative, they don't evolve the combat, and they suck any skill required out of a series whose combat revolves around an element of puzzle-solving and skill. I don't want my combat to be "press the B button repeatedly to win!" tap A quickly to NOT DIE AS FAST

EDIT: Finally, QTE's also move games away from games and towards movies. There's a reason that one of my friends described MGS4 as "the best movie I've ever played." (Okay, to be fair, that was just because of the enormous amount of cutscenes. But it can apply in the gameplay department too.) A game needs to immerse the player, and a few button presses every now and then detract from the experience, not enhance it.
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion
Post by: Nebbles on April 13, 2016, 09:04:08 PM
Exactly. Zelda games rely on your actual skill. It tests you as much as it tests Link, and doing QTE events would strip Zelda games of that quality.
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion

that's why adventure games will always be better than RPGs, because there's not freaking level up system
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion
Post by: Dudeman on April 13, 2016, 09:35:39 PM
That's another good point. In RPG's, you eventually reach a point where nothing is challenging anymore because you grinded (grinded? ground?) up to a point where you can decimate everything in your path. Zelda is great because the difference between early area difficulty and late area difficulty is decided by puzzle complexity and how much damage an enemy does. The only real "level increases" you get are more health, magic/more magic, and usually a stronger sword. That means that you can go back to early areas without thinking "great, here's the tutorial area with all the sucky enemies that I'll have to wade through now."

Well, with all the Zelda talk in the "What games are you playing?" thread, I wanted to talk more about zelda, so I'm reviving this!

What's your favorite final boss in Zelda?
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion

Depends.
Are you asking for final boss of the game or the dungeon?
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion
Post by: cashwarrior1 on September 27, 2016, 06:25:30 PM
Of the game. I consider dungeon bosses "bosses", I forgot other people don't :P.

Although it's not my favorite, Ocarina of Time's final boss does a really good job at completing the atmosphere of the entire game.

Wind wakers is objectively the best between the mechanic, aesthetic, and story implication
Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion
Post by: cashwarrior1 on September 27, 2016, 06:38:32 PM
Wind Waker's is pretty solid. IMO Spirit Tracks' final boss is comparable to Wind Waker's.

EDIT: Shoot, Twilight Princess has a really good one as well!

Thanks for clarifying. I consider what I guess you'd call mini bosses to bosses and the there's the final boss of the dungeon and final boss of the game

That said while I have played nearly all of the Zelda Series I've only completed OoT and I felt like the boss battle just disappointing (hell I had more fun fighting bongo bongo and twinrova. )

So um, I'm doing Link to the Past now and I'm actually finding it tough :p

I've done Minish Cap, Twilight Princess and OoT, and I don't remember ever being so frustrated over a Zelda game. Also I'm getting stuck a lot more than usual haha had to check online sources three times already seriously how could they call that place a "gossip shop"

The game is truly a masterpiece though! Love the whole sword-charging system, really awesome overworld, good progression, and the items are just so much fun to mess with. Temples (palaces) aren't as long as OoT but you get LOTS of them.

Also I've died like, 50 times or so already. Dang. Me is zelda noob. :(

Title: Re: The Legend of Zelda discussion
Post by: Nitro Indigo on September 30, 2016, 11:56:00 AM
I died so many times to Fraaz the first time I played the game, and I only knew what to do because they showed the boss battle in one of the trailers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-tJnmNP5ow&index=2&list=PL2AvyXVja4Hj4f8KXgLlyIsvT0BfKZyTl), with awesome music.

I have an irrational emotional attachment to Spirit Tracks, and have spent years thinking way too hard about that game. I found out all of the spoilers before I even played it, I put down the game a few days after I got it in 2012, and couldn't pick it back up until summer 2014, and I watched the ending on YouTube multiple times before then, and I regret all of those things, and yet... there's just something in that game that feels like there's so much about it I don't know. Is it some weird form of nostalgia?

Also, Nintendo at least acknowledged Want Midna Back, so who knows? Heck, there's a really good way for Byrne/Staven/Bucky to come back, even if it was only put in there so that the came could keep its CERO A rating.

I hate everything in Twilight Princess between the Goron Mines and the end of the Lakebed Temple. It's bad, frustrating, tedious, awful, boring game design and anyone else who claims they find it fun is probably a super fanboy. It was bad enough that I almost gave up on the game completely. I hope the next half of the game is actually fun.

Who doesn't want to fight a vagina with tentacles and teeth and a free-floating eyeball that later turns into a monstrous eel which still has a tentacle tooth vagina and also an eyeball embedded in its back

Seriously though I adore the more grotesque and bizarre aspects of Zelda designs (to use examples from this game, Ooccoo or Malo) so I was a big fan of the downright WTF enemies in the Lakebed Temple (I didn't even touch on the bizarre flab frog thing with the fish eggs that grow from its back -- but the way it forces you to look up for it á la Gohma from OOT really sells the horror of the situation).

Quote from: shadowkirby on January 18, 2017, 10:12:03 AMI never said I haven't played Twilight Princess. I stopped playing around the City in the Sky because it was boring and I had absolutely no motivation to keep playing it.

Tbh that comment was in response to Noc, but it looks like it applies here too. With the amount of time and effort invested already (to get that far) it seems weird that you would stop there.

I've been playing it in bits and pieces over the past year. I intend to finish it at some point, I just don't care how soon that happens.

Why is not finishing a game such a terrible thing

I personally think you should get to the end of anything before forming an opinion that you want to swear by

I agree. Sometimes the ending of a game makes or breaks the entire adventure beforehand. The adventure has to have a payoff, and if you're not playing to the payoff, you're not getting the full experience.

Regarding zelda II
Does it still apply

Yes, because if you actually sat down and figured out how the game works on its own rather than compare it to every other game in the series and get disappointed, you might actually find that it can be pretty cool. It worked for me.

I learned how to play zelda II.  The game is just too mechanically difficult to be enjoyable

I don't have enough time to play every game I own to completion. I've got plenty of steam games I haven't even started.
If a game hasn't really captured my interest over 20 hours in, that's not a good thing.

I own every single zelda game, and right now I play minish cap, skyward sword, links awakening, Oracle of seasons, zelda, Majoras mask.  Maybe I'll get back to zelda II someday but it mostly isn't worth the effort

The very first one I've played was A Link to the Past. So far, it remains to be my favorite.

I stumbled across a really well produced series that analyzes the dungeons throughout the Zelda series, and how they handle key placement, backtracking, spatial reasoning, linearity, etc. It's really, really good and I highly recommend taking a look if you're interested in seeing how Nintendo handles the mechanic elements of Zelda dungeons. It's even making me rethink my praise for Twilight Princess's dungeon design. Here's the current playlist (the guy isn't finished yet, so it's still a WIP): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLc38fcMFcV_ul4D6OChdWhsNsYY3NA5B2 (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLc38fcMFcV_ul4D6OChdWhsNsYY3NA5B2)

here are my thoughts on that video series:
-Very aesthetically pleasing
-Well put together
-Entertaining
-Too linear
SHOTS FIRED WOOO

After the LA video it became quite apparent that he was in no way credible on the subject of design.  The videos themselves started as heavily influenced by his own opinions.  After feedback from YouTube commenters (around the oracles games) he did get better, but he never went back to look at what he had already done (HE DIDN'T BACKTRACK OOOH) and just sort of stuck to his bias when referring to games he had already done.

What this guy doesn't seem to understand is that there are many kinds of complexity and all dungeons have their own complexity niche, if you will.

His measures of what makes a good dungeon were arbitrary and irrelevant to the particular dungeon's goal.

He did subconsciously start to realize actual relevant dungeon information so hopefully he goes back and re-evaluates before making whatever he was planning on making.  As for twilight princess, he applied a top down perspective to a 3D game, which is why they're made out to be terrible.

A quick BotW timeline post just 'cause it's almost out and I'm excited. Aonuma has basically confirmed that BotW takes place somewhere on the downfall timeline by emphasizing the old woman's line about how the history of Hyrule is also the history of the Calamity Ganon. The only timeline with multiple major conflicts that feature Ganon as the main antagonist is this timeline (specifically Ganon, too, since Ganondorf never appears in this timeline). I'd be willing to bet that it actually takes place at the very end of this timeline, mostly due to the huge amount of parallels the Zelda team has been intentionally drawing to the original game, which is the second-to-last game in this timeline (before Zelda II, of course).

I had to pack up my Switch last week and send it home with some other stuff to make moving out in a week easier, and in the absence of Breath of the Wild I've been dicking around on a new Majora's Mask file

How did I miss the hand in the toilet the first time

I thought botw was at the end of the child timeline

It's complicated, is the best thing I can come up with.  The game's story itself doesn't fit within the child timeline, but that one stinking line is a tether to keeping that hypothesis alive.  Until official confirmation is released, I'll continue to assume that they're finishing up the downfall timeline then moving on to the child timeline, then adult timeline (all the games recently have been either remakes or before oot or downfall)
