Title: Quote of the Day
Post by: shadowhunter301 on April 30, 2016, 10:42:58 AM
Thanks to E. Gadd for this inspiration! You know how E. Gadd does his word of the day? Well, this thread is the Quote of the Day in which I post deep, quotes and feel free to interpret what it means and just discuss! Ready?

04/30/2016

"To say of what is that it is not, or of what is not that it is, is false, while to say of what is that it is, and of what is not that it is not, is true."
- Aristotle

This'll be fun. Personally I don't care much for Aristotle (or many other Ancient Greek philosophers for that matter) but this topic should be fun.
Btw, that quote is basically saying "Saying that something does not exist when it does, or that something does exist when it doesn't is false, but saying something does exist when it does, and that something doesn't exist when it does not, is true."
Like... no shit. XD

Hey, you're building your thread, though! At least this shows people have had awareness on the level of existent and nonexistent since Ancient Greek times!

Thanks E. Gadd. :)
Do you think once a day is enough or should I do more per day (if it's too obvious like that?)

What's your opinion?
Title: Re: Quote of the Day
Post by: Bloop on April 30, 2016, 11:10:43 AM
Ya know, that theory was actually one of the reasons why long ago everyone thought the earth didn't move around the sun, but vice versa. The quote means "If you perceive something, then that's the truth." We don't see the earth move and we see the sun spinning around the earth, therefore we are the center of the universe.

Which was essentially Aristotle's philosophy in a nutshell; that the greatest level of reality is what we can perceive with our senses. On the other hand, Plato argues that there is a pure idea of everything in existence, and that everything in the world is a variation/mutation of it.

Once a day, just to keep from overwhelming the people, thread, and board.

Quote from: Bloop on April 30, 2016, 11:10:43 AMtherefore we are the center of the universe.
You know, technically that's correct.
The center of the universe is everywhere: take the fact that it's expanding. From any given point, it seems as the universe is expanding outward from that point. Make sense?
Title: Re: Quote of the Day

yeah yeah okay the center of the universe is either everywhere or nowhere
Change it to the center of the solar system then
Title: Re: Quote of the Day

So, the sun is at the center of our solar system, yes?
Title: Re: Quote of the Day
Post by: Bloop on April 30, 2016, 11:24:18 AM
Yup, and it's called heliocentrism.
Currently we accept that as truth (because science), but centuries ago people accepted geocentrism (earth is the center of our solar system) as truth.
Title: Re: Quote of the Day

Do you know why they thought the earth was at the center? Was it because their sense of depth and perception was very limited until technology came along?

Title: Re: Quote of the Day
Post by: Bloop on April 30, 2016, 11:36:14 AM
Well, it kinda makes sense to jump to that conclusion. Like I said, from our point of view, we can see the sun spinning around the earth. There have been some individuals who believed the sun was the center, though, even before Galileo Galilei: Copernicus, Hypatia, and probably some more I don't know because I have not done that much research. At the time of Copernicus and Galilei, the reason why it was not accepted was mainly the church being stubborn and stuff.
Title: Re: Quote of the Day

Yeah, the Catholic Church saw it as advantageous to keep the general mindset simplistic so it could exercise absolute control over everything in an of the world. The second people started thinking for themselves, the second they realized that the church wasn't necessary as a mediator for God.

That had to do more with the Age of Enlightenment, and people becoming more knowledgeable after the invention of the printing press. People before then never actually read the Bible unless you were a member of the clergy.

You seem knowledgeable on the subject, but that isn't what I got from that at all. What I got was the following:
"To say something of something that it is not, or of what it is not while it is, is false, while to say something of something is while it is, and to say it is not what it is not, is true."
Which can be simplified to:
"If you attribute a status to something that it does not have, or contrarily accuse something of not having an attribute that it actually does, is false; but if you attribute a status to something that it does indeed have, and vice versa, that's true."
Essentially:
"If you make a mistake judging something, it's false; but if you judge something accurately/correctly, that's true."*
*Quotations added because I'm quoting myself

There are a lot of different definitions for the verb "to be", and that's probably why Aristotle used that quote. In your case, "to be" has the definition of something being true, but in the example of geocentrism, "to be" means position or movement: to say something of something that is not (to say that the earth moves while we don't see or notice it moving), is false.

I personally think the "wrong is wrong, right is right" version of the quote is too simplified, because in some cases (like geocentrism), something that's wrong was accepted as right. At that time, everything that 'is' could be perceived in some way.
Sometimes, you can't actually know if something's right or wrong. An example for long ago is the geo- and heliocentrism, but for this time, examples are "Do aliens exist?" or "Does a higher being exist?". Aristotle's quote is so vague, that these questions can be answered with either "yes" or "no", if you interpret "to be" in another way.

(It's actually kinda hard to find the right words for this because I'm not at all a professional philosopher. forgive meeeeeeeee)

Whoo! Sorry for the major delay's. Apparently the thread's title was broken, so let's get it fixed up. This quote was very interesting for me. What do you guys think?

May 16, 2016: "Those who do not appreciate life do not deserve life."
-John Kramer

Personally, I'm for both sides. If you do not appreciate something, why have it in the first place? If you don't appreciate life, is it worth having life? If you don't appreciate your parents for what they do, is it even worth having a parent?

But, no one can choose whether they are born or not. It is all about to the parents and people born from a broken home didn't choose to have that kind of life.

I think in the end, life is so fragile and precious, everyone deserves life, even if they don't appreciate it.
Thoughts?

Yes, it definitely follows that if you don't appreciate life, you're allowed to go on a murder spree. :P

I don't think it's up to any one person to decide who deserves life or not. I know this quote is more on a philosophical level, but really. If someone doesn't "appreciate" life, that's their own problem.
Title: Re: Quote of the Day
Post by: E. Gadd Industries on May 16, 2016, 05:17:01 PM
But define appreciating life for me. Does it refer to appreciating breathing, or does it refer to a more social aspect of "life"? Or is that all just up to interpretation?
Title: Re: Quote of the Day
Post by: shadowhunter301 on May 16, 2016, 05:27:05 PM
In the context of the quote, John Kramer is talking to a person about what it means to be alive and how people take life and people for granted. So, I guess the social aspect of life, being alive.

I strongly dislike this mindset with every inch of my soul. "Deal with me because this is how I am" is so self-centered and lazy. If you're selfish impatient and out of control, fix it.
Besides, nobody cares about your best when you're always at your worst.
Title: Re: Quote of the Day

Isn't it basically saying: "Accept me as I am?"
Title: Re: Quote of the Day
Post by: Pianist Da Sootopolis on May 17, 2016, 07:01:06 PM
To me there are mixed messages. I don't think Monroe would be the kind of person to just say "eh deal with it".
On the one hand, there's the subtle message of "sometimes shit happens to me and you'll have to deal with it", which is kinda meh, but IMO the other (far more important message) is that people can't always be perfect and that if you're gonna leave a person during the bad times then you shouldn't get to just come back into their lives when it's all better again.
Title: Re: Quote of the Day
Post by: braix on May 17, 2016, 07:25:43 PM
"Accept me as I am", yet you do nothing to change. If someone with this mindset told me to accept them as they are, screw that I'm not going to care. Show me some effort that you're trying to change. I'm not going to just deal with your extremely flawed personality while you do nothing. That's just forcing all the work on me. Better to just not deal with you at all
I can deal with your bad side as long as needed if you're trying to get better

Agreeing with Braix and Noc here. The general tone of this quote has always given me the impression that the so-called "best" isn't exactly something to look forward to, at least in light of the "worst."

Yeahhhhhh, this quote does have that tone of "I'm better than all of you, even at my worst, so you need to get over it and submit to me." My sister has that exact same outlook on life... And she's only a 3rd grader.

Isn't hope not based on logic at all though? It's like the belief that things will be better than they'll probably end up being so you're ignoring that logic and hoping something illogical will happen.
Title: Re: Quote of the Day

I mean I guess you have a point there. Hope doesn't have to not be based on logic. You can still hope something even though you know you're probably going to be successful in the activity.

Pretty simple, but with lots of truth. Life progressively gets harder as you move on from your childhood, to teenager to adults years, but no matter where you are in life (a crippling debt, all F's on your report card, loss of a loved one, etc), there are still those light spots in life.

-Leo Tolstoy

This quote is highly disputable. I agree that patience is one of them, but I don't really think time is on anyone's side. What I think of time is just our friend or enemy in some situations. You can't control time and time will go on no matter what you do. Time is indeed powerful with the fact that it is eternal and you must be patient in order to see the fruits of your life....

One night back in the 1980s, 90s(?) there was a blackout in Los Angeles I do believe. People started freaking out and calling the police, claiming they were seeing strange lights in the sky. What they didn't realize is that they were seeing the Milky Way in the night sky. Also, there's a place in Georgia where people go just for that; white light is prohibited.

Quote from: Call of CthulhuThe most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.   --H. I mean, that sounds like a lazy way to think about it, to be honest. You shouldn't try to make mistakes, but accept the fact that you will. We don't need to, but we should accept the fact that we will even when we don't want to.

XD I thought that, too.

About the quote, it's all about pointing out how perfectly imperfect we are. Screw-ups will come. They happen almost daily. We just need to (like Seb said) accept that they'll come & move on with life. It isn't like we can prepare ourself ourselves for those mistakes, only how we'll react to making them. (And even then, that can be a bit unpredictable)

Out of the past, present, and future, our present is the most important as it molds our future and even if we fail in the past, we still have a chance to make it right.
Title: Re: Quote of the Day

Did you know it's impossible to live in the present? Our brains have something known as "time lag", which is created because it takes approximately a tenth of a second for your brain to process the information it receives. The only reason it feels like we live in the present is because our brains try to make predictions about what will happen a tenth of a second in the future, covering the lag. However, the predictions aren't always correct, and that's what leads to accidents.

"Congress shall make NO law respecting an establishment of religion, nor prohibiting the free exercise thereof."
Having a country based on a religion does both of those things.
Keep in mind that the whole reason people left for the Americas was because of religious persecution..

Highly debatable, but love is indeed one of the most important things in our world.

What a meaningful quote, it speaks of so many things at once - hope, faith & resilience. Tough times help shape us into stronger people (though not all might be as positive-thinking). I find it easier to live with an optimistic mindset, otherwise your own heavy thoughts can weigh you down even further.

Nature is all around us, and sure, while most of nature is good for being calm & collected, there are a few things (I'm looking at you, Boxfish) that are like "Fear me, stupid human!"

But not for that one day you decide to become a hermit & camp out inside playing video games or watching TV all day!

EDIT: I realize that makes me sound like a nudist of sorts, so let me elaborate:
"But it doesn't matter what clothing you wear for that one day...all day!"
