Title: Re: ThatHiddenCharacter Arrangement - Super Mario World Medley

Sure, hey, I'll give this a look.
First of all, is there any particular reason you wrote out the whole repeat instead of utilizing repeat signs?

Second, while your rhythms are accurate durationally (for the most part), they're not quite written the best way notationally, if that makes sense. In writing music you generally want to make the beat as clear to the performer as possible, which in a piece of 4/4 music means making every beat visible in some way, through the use of ties (excepting certain easy-to-understand rhythms like a syncopated eighth-quarter-eighth, a dotted quarter-eighth, or a half note). So, for instance, in measure 5, you're probably better off writing what you currently have as a beamed sixteenth-eighth-dotted eighth, as sixteenth-eighth-eighth (that is then tied to a sixteenth).

Related, during the segment that starts at 1:34 in your Youtube link (idk what the theme is called, it's the one that's remixed as the wing cap theme in SM64), the rhythm of the bass seems to be slightly off.

I haven't done a thorough comparison of your pitches to the original - I usually leave that up to other arrangers - but assuming that the pitches are, indeed, correct, there's a couple of places where you have the wrong enharmonic spelling. In m. 5 and 7 (and anyplace that looks like either of those measures) the Gb should be an F#. Same in m. 13, Gb should be F#. Also I'm pretty sure the G in the LH in m. 66 should be an F#, and the B at the end of m. 20 should be a Bb.

Finally, if you intend to submit this to the site, there are some formatting considerations to keep in mind, which can be found here. (http://forum.ninsheetmusic.org/index.php?topic=481.0)
Namely:
-Missing measure numbers
-First system not indented
-"Piano" marking visible all the time
-Some of the text is misaligned; arranger name falls off page, copyright info is misaligned, metronome marking overlaps music, composer name in the wrong place; music overlaps the latter pages' titles

Since it's your first arrangement and I've mentioned a lot of things here, I decided to go ahead and clean it up for you (and also incorporate repeats, but you're free to change that if you're not a fan). Here is the updated file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/wq7l4653p39bels/medley%20edit.mus?dl=0

There's also just general arrangement considerations. It looks like you didn't use articulations anywhere throughout the sheet; while they're not strictly necessary, I can definitely hear a few places where they would help to make the arrangement pop a little bit (such as the very first measure!) This is also a bit of a sparse arrangement; for instance, I definitely hear more music at measure 9 compared to 5, but they're written the same way. Additionally, the section starting at m. 27 sounds a bit thick and almost legato because of the lack of articulation.

Also, have you thought about incorporating some of the other parts into the score? I can hear, for instance, some parts in the trombone at mm. 14-15 that don't seem to be represented. Also, the empty half-measure at the beginning and the empty measure midway through are, well, empty. I know they're percussion, but sometimes it's possible to put percussion into the piano scores, either by requiring the player to tap something, or by replacing non-pitched percussion with pitches that fit the key. I'm not too good at percussion additions, so I can't really suggest anything; I'm sure some other arrangers might have better ideas than me on what to do.

I know it sounds like I'm picking on it a lot, but I'm really not - overall this is a pretty impressive arrangement for a first go in arranging, so congratulations! Keep arranging more in the future.

I did intentionally leave out the repeat because when the song repeats, there's and extra note that plays on the first measure of the repeat that was brought over from the end of the song. Also, I compose music that I intend to sound good for video games, so maybe that's why I did such a good job my first time arranging. And the text errors in finale were caused by the way I made the text in musescore and I couldn't figure out how to fix it in finale. It worked fine in musescore. Thanks for the help.

I did notice that, so when I put in the repeats, I intentionally included a first and second ending in order to keep that intact. I think it looks cleaner that way, but if you'd rather have it written out then that's your decision, not mine :p

QuoteAlso, I compose music that I intend to sound good for video games, so maybe that's why I did such a good job my first time arranging.

Huh, you're an actual composer? That's pretty cool! Yeah, that kind of experience is definitely helpful for arranging/transcribing video game music, for sure.

QuoteAnd the text errors in finale were caused by the way I made the text in musescore and I couldn't figure out how to fix it in finale. It worked fine in musescore. Thanks for the help.

ah yes the age-old musescore-to-finale conversion problem. I deal with this by importing the score from musescore into finale, and then creating a brand new finale file. If you set up all the text through the setup wizard, it shouldn't get drastically misaligned when it shows up in the score. Then I just copy and paste the contents of the music from the old import into the new version. This way the music gets (mostly) preserved when you put it into a correctly-formatted file. There's also some downloadable Finale templates here (http://forum.ninsheetmusic.org/index.php?topic=7600.0) that you can use; same deal - just copy-paste the music itself into one of these, and edit the rest of the text as appropriate.

If you're using Finale Notepad, I don't think you actually can put in first and second endings. Because Finale Notepad is dumb. In Musescore, the "Lines" option on the palette should include draggable first- and second-ending markers that you can put on your score. Those will work properly when imported into Notepad.

I can't figure out how to make the first repeat include the two measures. Technology is not my strong point.

Hey! This is pretty nice for your first arrangement. Layout aside (easily fixable with a version of Finale), here are some pointers about the arrangement itself.

Quote from: Altissimo on December 26, 2016, 09:52:26 AMThere's also just general arrangement considerations.
- Starting with this. With a composition like this you really should show what notes should be emphasized over others - give it some excitement and demonstrate how you want the arrangement to be played. For instance, measure 1 beat 3 could use a staccato, as could beat 3 of measure 4; some notes in the main "Overworld" melody should be as well, like the two C's in measure 6. Just to start.
- Related is the notion of note duration - use rests when there's a gap in the music. The up-tempo "Star Road" section (m. 55, pas the q=140 mark) sounds funny because the bass notes don't have a noticeable gap in between them - they look and sound legato in your sheet when they shouldn't be.
- Bass in the "Athletic" section (m. 27+): It moves. Not just always C on the bottom.

That song isn't the athletic theme, it's the bonus room theme. I'll listen to the song some more and see what I can do.

I've fixed up the arrangement, but I can't get the formatting done right. I can get it fine in finale, but when I transfer it to musescore to export a pdf, it is completely messed up in a way that I can not fix. Can anyone fix the formatting problems for me?

Post by: Zeila on February 16, 2017, 12:27:19 PM
I didn't fix the formatting problems, but I did give feedback:

In general, there are spots where you have voices that belong in a different octave (mostly higher) as well as missing harmonies and different inversions. I didn't feel like going through everything, but I did the first 4 measures for you (at least the RH part). Also, to be more specific, there's a harmony part starting at m9 that would be more interesting/musically diverse as opposed to just octaves. Make sure you really pay attention to detail. This ranges under pretty much everything, including note lengths and articulation (which still needs to be adjusted in general spots)
Oh and I almost forgot to mention, but you should clean up the rests like in m2 (and that one spot around the "star" section where the notes aren't properly beamed). And the tie in the LH m2 might not be necessary

I also noticed that beat 2.5 in m22/24 should be B and D instead of an A and D. Idk if that was just a mistake, or if you just copied it without checking to see if there was a difference (if it's the latter, then you should watch out for those cases). Other things you should look out for are patterns and chords. If you can recognize something, then it'll be much easier to write down and verify. For example, the notes in m21 are going down chromatically, yet you didn't fully go down a half step on each lower note (they are also wrong - beat 3 should be an E and C# instead of E and C nat)

Two more things: firstly, since this is a medley, you should consider writing the name of the songs down when they show up on the sheet (although you might have difficulties with doing that with the expression tool so that it would stick to the measure as opposed to the text tool); secondly, I think you should invert the off-beat chords starting at m27 so that it doesn't "overlap" with the bass notes. I personally think it would sound better if you avoided situations where the down beats end up repeating like so:

Overall, not too shabby! It's pretty good for your first attempt

This is just an xml import from musescore to finale. This is only for note purposes, I know that the aesthetics are way off. I'm having an extremely hard time with harmonies, so I'd like to know if the harmonies I put are as bad as I think they are.

Since this my first really official post for arrangements, I'm editing this one to include videos for every arrangement before Mr. L, Green Thunder. Here's the list: Super Mario World Medley, Course Clear, Now You've Done It, and Tough Enemy. The MUS for the song is under the video and I always list the songs in the order of the videos from top to bottom.

Hey, nice to see another SPM arrangement on here! A few suggestions:

- The key is Eb minor (6 flats), so you should change that (just change the key, the notes are all the same). I'd recommend using the tonic as a basis for keys in the future rather than accidentals.
- In measure 25, the rhythm should be notated with a triplet rather than 16ths.
- Starting at measure 5, there's a cool walking bassline that I think you should include instead of the current one. It's especially prominent in measures 21-23.
- Maybe include more harmonies instead of just the bass and melody?

Good work overall!

Are you sure about that? Before I update the file here, I want to make sure because there are Fb, but no Fn. I'm pretty sure it's in Ab minor.
Title: Re: ThatHiddenCharacter's Arrangements - NEW! My Theme! Mr. L, Green Thunder
Post by: Static on March 26, 2017, 10:23:25 AM
The Fb is an accidental, in this case a flat 2 scale degree. This is really common in a lot of songs. When deciding what to put as the key of a song, do not look at the accidentals, but listen for where the melody and chords resolve. If you listen to the song and play an Eb repeatedly on a piano in the background, you'll find that it fits with the entire song. If you analyze the song harmonically, you'll also find that Ebm is a much better choice. Just remember to keep in mind, accidentals do not always determine the key; it's all about the harmony.

As a little example, consider my arrangement of Rightside Down Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy 2 (http://www.ninsheetmusic.org/download/pdf/3493). The piece is filled with accidentals all over the place, but I didn't notate it in Ebb Major or something weird like that because the tonic is Ab and the tonality is major, so I chose Ab Major. While that song is a lot more weird in terms of harmony, it's the same idea here.

Long story short, yes, it's Eb minor.
Title: Re: ThatHiddenCharacter's Arrangements - NEW! My Theme! Mr. L, Green Thunder
Post by: Latios212 on March 26, 2017, 10:24:22 AM
Definitely Eb minor. It's better to identify the key signature based on the tonic (what note does the music center around?) and not the accidentals that are present.

To be fair, the Kirby section of NinSheetMusic is in a bit of a shambles. Stuff like "Checker Knights" is pretty good, and stuff like "Castle Lololo" is at least adequate, but stuff like "Halfmoon" needs work. (If "Halfmoon" retains its name, we may as well rename the recently fixed "The Battleship Halberd: On Deck" theme "Mekkai". Kirby Super Star reuses its music that much...) I don't have the greatest clue about how to handle the endless versions of the "Kirby Dance" that the Kirby series collectively provides, though...

Some of your harmonies sound wrong to me, though--the three starting C's in the melody in Bars 21, 23, 25, and 27 should be harmonized with Ab's instead of G's, and the G's in the melody in Bars 22, 24, and 26 should be harmonized with Eb's or C's instead of D's. IMO, the bassline in Bars 21-28 should uses Ab's instead of C's, Bb's instead of Eb's, and C's instead of G's (the C's instead of G's is the most obvious in the video, IMO--you can likely get away with Ab major chord harmonization for "Ab's instead of C's" (so even swapping C's with Ab's is optional) and Bb major chord harmonization for "Bb's instead of Eb's", but I clearly hear C's in the bass in 0:30-0:31), and I believe Bar 32 should have C's in the bass instead of G's. Also, the passage from the right-hand G in Bar 32 to the last right-hand note in Bar 35 should be an octave higher (notably, the high C in Bar 32 and the highest C in Bar 33 should be the same pitch, as 0:45-0:46 show).

Looks good, but here's some stuff to fix:

- When you have lots of chromatic half steps like this, it's better to write them with different note names. For example, in the bassline do A# to B instead of Bb to B. And later in the RH, like in m11, use D# to E instead of Eb to E.

- In m6, write beat 3 with F#s and C#s because it's moving chromatically upwards.

- In m10, write the LH part in the treble clef because the amount of ledger lines you have right now is far too many and it makes sight-reading it difficult. Also, replace the first 2 16th rests in the LH in that measure with an 8th rest. For the RH, use 8va for just that measure as well because the amount of ledger lines there is also a lot.

- Redistribute the measures in the last 2 systems because having one empty measure like that taking up an entire system looks awkward.

Dreamy Mushrise Winds

- m20 LH - remember to beam those 2 8ths on beats 1.5 and 2.5 so they match the RH
- m49, 51, and 53 RH - those tied 8ths should just be quarter notes.
- m51 - that keychange needs a double barline

Dodo's Coming!!

- Key is c minor, not g minor.
- Since the C and Db in m8 are right next to each other, it would be better to write this as a trill with a flat sign. I don't think you can notate this in Notepad, so if you need help, I or someone else could edit that in for you.
- Since this song is in 6/8, you can replace those tied 8th notes in m9, 11, etc. with quarter notes. Actually, since these notes are short in the original, you should just make them an 8th note followed by an 8th rest. The tied 8th and quarter in places like m10 and m12 should be a dotted quarter.

In 6/8 time, its important to remember that each beat is a dotted quarter note, so the beat groupings for 8th notes should be 3 per beat.

- You should make all the offbeat dyads in the LH staccato to more closely match the original, like in m9-14, etc.
- If you're going to be splitting up dotted quarter rests into a quarter and 8th rest, the quarter should always come first:

- m15 RH - The first D should be a G.
- m17 - The tied 8ths should be just a quarter.
- m18, the note on beat 2 should be a lot shorter; just an 8th note followed by 2 8th rests will work fine. Also, there should be a low F# and G in the LH underneath the D and Eb.

[close]
- m19, there should be a grace note An leading to the beginning Bb.
- m21, 23, 25, 29, 31 - remove the tie and 2nd 8th note from all these measures so it matches the part from earlier:

I moved that Bb to the RH instead because it's part of the main melody, which continues in the RH after that.
[close]
- m32: since you're moving that melody down to the LH, you should put it in a separate layer and use the Smart Shape tool to draw a line showing the path of that voice. I'm not sure if you can add the line in Notepad, but like I said earlier, me or anyone else I'm sure would be glad to fix that for you. Also, the Bn there should be a Cb
- m33-37 are off a little. This part is really tricky, so I don't really blame you for this lol. This is how I would write it, though the rhythm is still very unclear, particularly in m34:

[close]
- For the very last system, I would put m36 along with m37 since it looks really awkward. Again, I know you can't do this so I would be happy to or you could ask someone else who's willing to do that.

In general, just be careful about the note and rest groupings in compound time signatures like 6/8.

Awesome stuff here, it was fun taking a look at it.

I tried looking, but the site's search feature doesn't accept single digit numbers. Anyway, this took me maybe 30 minutes to do, so enjoy! Course Clear, Game Over, Miss, and Slots.

No, I don't recall anyone arranging these ever on NSM, which is surprising. I've been considering putting together a fanfares collection for this game, but it'd be awesome if you do! I'm on mobile right now so I'll check out the sheets later.

Hey, nice, THC! I was gonna make a compilation of these, but you beat me to them!

Course Clear - Could use some staccatos.
Game Over - Whoa there. Check your key signature. Also, could use some staccatos.
Miss - Check over the rhythm again. It sounds off. And, if you want to, lower the last two drum beats an octave or two to match the NES sound. Don't forget staccatos.
Slots - Delete the second measure and use the Page Layout tool to shorten the length of the first. If Finale Notepad can't do that, I can help.
Title: Re: ThatHiddenCharacter's Arrangements - NEW! Super Mario Bros. 3!
Post by: Static on July 06, 2017, 06:56:31 PM
These look really neat! A couple things to fix:

- Generally, on all 4 of these, you could add some articulations like slurs and staccatos in some spots to spice the sheets up.
- You transcribed Game Over in F Major (albeit without the keysig), but it really should be in G Major. After you change the key, here's some things to fix:
- The rhythm in Miss is a little inaccurate; here (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6i3fGvW_38VbXB0TEdkSzYwVW8)'s what I think it should look like (feel free to use and keep the file).

Really nice work here, I'm glad to finally see these sheets get arranged and I'm shocked they haven't until now lol

Oops. I forgot to switch the key back after exporting to Notepad. It transposes to the key of C from the actual key when I copy to the template file. That should be an easy fix. As for the rest (from both of you), I'll take care of that when I get on my computer.

Post by: Lkjhgfdsa_77 on August 23, 2017, 08:57:13 AM
Great sheet, but I just have a couple of nit-picky suggestions -

 - m6 LH - the flag of the first 8th note (quaver) collides with the sharp sign right after. Just clicking on the notes with the entry tool should fix it
 - m10 RH - this may just be me, but the last quarter note (crotchet) doesn't extend into the second portion of the beat, but you could've also done it to not have a single 8th (quaver) rest on the end,or it's just a matter of the soundfont used for that section, and the piano can't "sustain" a note, so the difference of holding it down for an extra fifth of a second doesn't matter, and a human performer will likely drop it before then anyway to get to the next chord, just do whatever you want...
 - m14 RH - the 16th note (semiquaver) grouping in beat 2.5 is the only part in the measure beamed down... it might look better beamed up with everything else.
 - m15-17 LH - the 8th notes (semiquavers) in the middle are too squished together. Clicking around with the entry tool should also fix this.
 - m18 - the first two beats of this measure can benefit from articulations - I'm hearing the C chord in beat 2.5 tenuto (and possibly (see second point) taking up the first half of beat 3) and everything else staccato
 - Copyright - Publisher might go before developer, but I'm not exactly sure. "HAL" in HAL Laboratory is completely capitalized. The beams from the bottom system are blocking out some of the copyright, but it's fine if you can't fix that now.

Anyway, a new arrangement! First things first, I'd like to give many thanks to WaluigiTime64. Before putting this up here, I asked for his opinion on it, which led to a lot of editing and fixing and it is now so much better than what I first had. He's also the one who got me into this game's music, so, thanks for that too I guess. Anyway, Micro-Row!

For those who don't know, Kahoot! is an online trivia game used to help students learn and/or study about certain subjects in school. Of course, people use it for other things, too, because why not? Although it is a (mostly) educational game, it has great music and is deserving of being on the site. It is a game after all. We shouldn't discriminate against games here. NSM was built on the principle that most all games are created equal! Anyway, I arranged the lobby theme.

Alright, I actually made these arrangements quite awhile ago, I just never put them up. The story is, Lkjhgfdsa and I were gonna do the Bazaar Medley from Skyward Sword as a collab, so we each took on three of the six variations. However, after asking an Updater's opinion, we found out they should all go on site separately. These are the three I did: Regular, item Check, and Scrap Shop. (If anyone has complaints about the LH of Scrap Shop, feel free to file it in the complaints bin. I'll definitely check them out. Definitely.)

Here's a little thing I decided to work on. It actually turned out to be much harder than I anticipated for such a short song, but I still did it. It definitely still needs work, especially at the intro. But I love this song and think it was worth it. I'm planning on doing more songs from Color Splash, so hopefully those will start showing up here soon, unless I deem them too difficult for me and give up. Let's hope that doesn't happen! For all of you who don't want Deltarune spoilers, don't proceed! Well, there really aren't any spoilers actually, unless you don't want to know anything about the game including music and/or characters. Anyway, this is Lancer's theme. I love it. I'm also working on Lancer Fight and THE WORLD REVOLVING, but I couldn't finish them tonight and I don't want to lose my chance to be the first one to arrange/post this before someone else does, considering how big Deltarune has become in a matter of days no surprise. I don't have school tomorrow, so expect to see the other two posted sometime then. I've already practically finished Lancer Fight (though I use the term loosely, the bassline was a monster and I know I got a lot of it wrong, not to mention harmonies), I just didn't have time to convert it to Finale.

I recently really got into this amazing remake of the Ribbon Road theme from Mario Kart: Super Circuit (which I don't like), and I just had to arrange it. Sorry, I'm just a novice player, you'll have to ask someone with more experience than me. It's clearly playable, otherwise it wouldn't have been accepted onto the site, so maybe ask an updater, for example, I know Libera is often willing to help people who have questions.

You called?

If you're talking about the right hand of bars 1-2 (and then later on as well), I'd take the B and D# with 2 and 4, and then the A# and C## with 1 and 3.  It is a little fiddly though, but nothing that can't be solved with some practice.  The tricky part is getting it all staccato, rather than slurring everything into each other, but it can be done: practice it slowly, keeping it as detached as you can so that, hopefully, when you bring the speed up again you can keep it light and crisp.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the reply, though. :)

Get it? Catchy Tune! Because you catch the fruit! And it's a rhythm game! It's funny!

I've actually wanted to arrange this song for quite awhile, but thought it'd be really hard so I didn't. Turns out it was actually pretty easy, so that's cool. Also, I have a couple Rhythm Heaven arrangements done, I just haven't put them into Finale yet, so expect those sometime in the near or not near future. Well without further ado, I give you Loonboon!

Well, here's one of the Rhythm Heaven arrangements I promised would be coming soon. Though I honestly probably would've waited longer had I not wanted to submit this one so badly. Well, it's time for some Munchy Monk!

And yes, I know the video is from Megamix's OST, but the audio track is exactly the same and the GilvaSunner video has the in-game sfx for some reason.

Just posting to say I'm about to add a bunch of Paper Mario: Color Splash arrangements to the OP here. There's too many to bother putting into a post here and I can't actually do it right now anyway since I'm on mobile, but I will be adding them to the OP once I get on my computer in the next half hour-ish. The reason there are so many is because I've taken it upon myself to arrange a huge chunk of the Color Splash OST. It was originally part of a project that ended up getting shut down, but I decided to continue with it on my own time because Color Splash deserves the love and I'm a huge fan of the music. That is all. Expect more Color Splash in the future, I already have at least one in the works that isn't ready to post here yet.

Nice :P Are you going to submit them? I'm looking forward to more Color Splash stuff!

I do plan on submitting them at some point. I do have to say, some of the files I just posted may be older versions. I can't remember if I downloaded the reviewed versions of a few of them. This was originally part of that arranger personal project thing Seb ran, but stopped running partway through because he got busy, I believe. Anyway, yeah, I will submit these eventually, but not right now since I'm a bit busy for it right now. Or maybe I will do it now, I'm very sporadic.

Long answer short, they will be submitted at some time or another.

Deja vu! I've just been in this place before!

*Ahem* I've done a lot of editing to this arrangement, and I think it's finally ready to upgrade from the red "not ready" text to the black "good or almost goodTM" text.

Remember the good old days when I replaced the crappy Fever arrangement on site? Well, now I'm replacing the not quite so crappy, but still not site-quality arrangement for The Wind is Blowing at Cavi Cape. I have chortles!

So after I left here, I still continued to make some piano arrangements. So I have just added everything I had that wasn't already on here. However, there are too many for me to bother linking them all in this post, so here's a quick list of the ones I added instead:

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team - Dozing Sands Secret
Mario Kart: Double Dash - Baby Park (Replacement)

Paper Mario: Color Splash - Your Answers, Please!
Paper Mario: The Origami King - Bob-omb's Determination
Plants vs. Zombies - Cerebrawl
Plants vs. Zombies 2 - Modern Day (Final Wave)
Rhythm Heaven - Blue Birds
Rhythm Heaven Fever - Built to Scale 2
Rhythm Heaven Megamix - First Contact (Already On-Site I forgot to add it here somehow)
Rhythm Heaven Megamix - Pajama Party
Rhythm Heaven Megamix - Second Contact
Rhythm Tengoku - The Snappy Trio
Super Mario Maker 2 - Athletic (Super Mario Bros.)
Super Mario Maker 2 - Forest (Super Mario World)

How did I forget to update this again? Rather than linking the two I forgot, I'll just list them.

Mario Party 5 - Bustling Noisily (Accepted)
Mario Party 7 - Ready, Set, Fun (Submitted)

However, I do have one to link here, since I just arranged it right now. Behold!
