Title: Re: ThatHiddenCharacter's Compositions
Post by: AmpharosAndy on February 16, 2017, 11:44:39 AM
(Making notes as I'm listening through them)

Battle - This piece is a very fitting battle theme for a happier themed game. The violin is playing the melody at the start and I think that a stronger instrument (trumpet maybe) could be more appropriate as it starts off the battle strongly. The brass lead for the rest of the piece seems to work much better. Good stuff!

Forest of Nevaeh - Solid introductory section. You've got a very catchy lead and accompaniment in the first section, which is already stuck in my head. The piece becomes noticeably weaker in the section where the melody is in the bass and there are chords in the right hand. Even something as simple as using broken chords instead or maybe adding a counter melody could instantly help the texture be more interesting.

Forest of Natas - Another great introduction. The vocals are slightly out of tune and it is offputting, although it's not your fault it is just the soundfont you are using. I like the trumpet pattern that comes in soon after the introduction. The sudden switch back to just vocals and strings after that is a little sudden and feels empty as the trumpet part isn't there anymore. I think that adding some healthy reverb and some other slight tweaks could completely take this piece from good to fantastic.

Frozen Peak - This piece reminds me of my own snow level piece - not just trying to make you listen to it, it does! This is the best one by far. Great repeating melodic pattern and appropriate use of instrumentation to give that nice snowy feel. You've written a lovely clarinet melody and effective vocal parts too. The high vocal part that leads into the repeat is brilliant, it perfectly builds up to when it drops off and returns to the start as it loops!

Overall, brillaint stuff :D I look forward to hearing some of your music in 2017!

To be honest, I didn't understand half of the things you said. I kind of get the gist, but not completely. Also, about Frozen Peak, I think it's just that people have a general sense of what a snowy place should feel like. I made it before joining NSM and I just listened to your song for the first time. Don't get me wrong, I'm not accusing you of accusing me of stealing your song. I like it, but I never steal ideas. Especially when it comes to music. So basically, maybe you could be a bit more descriptive about what you think I should do to the songs because I do feel they're a bit lacking and I would love some constructive criticism.

It is edited below. Should be understandable now XD I wasn't accusing anything earlier, I was just pointing out that they sound similar. No hard feelings, man :)

I didn't think you were accusing me. I really liked your snow song, by the way. Also, I'm glad you like the part before the repeat. I myself thought it wasn't very good, and I noticed that what I did there was something I seemed to do a lot in my earlier compositions. I have a lot, but only a few are good. They're also not musescore files, so I would have to input them into musescore from scratch, which is a bit tedious. I'll see what I can do about the other songs. You have given me some pretty nice ideas. I'm just glad that someone not only listens to my stuff, but also cares enough about it to give some advice. I seem to be very choppy going from subject to subject. Sorry if it's a bit confusing to understand what I say.

That was quick! And very well done as well. I love the extra part you've added to the forest of natas which makes it flow really well. As for Nevaeh the counter melody is very fitting and keeps it moving. Plus the trumpet melody in the battle theme seems to work too.

Pretty much everything is sorted so I can't say much else! Good job :D

By the way, I use the default soundfont for musescore, so the voice just normally sounds like that. I do like the changes, thanks for helping. Actually, I have a couple more songs on my youtube channel. I will add them here soon. Also, it wasn't that hard to fix them. In fact, I finished a little while before I updated them in dropbox.

The two songs that aren't from After are two of my first compositions. I'm very proud of them. The Item Get theme was composed by my cousin and composing isn't her strong point, so be a bit nice on that one. As for everything else, constructive criticism is extremely appreciated.

One of my first songs (that sounded horrible, mind you). I have instrumentized it (and also slightly changed the bass from the original) and made it actually sound good. It's kind of like a Yoshi's Island Map kind of deal, except slower-paced. By that I mean, it adds more parts as you progress through the world. Without further ado, here it is!

EDIT: Forgot to mention that it's a calm beach world. Kind of obvious, but worth stating, anyway.

I really like this one up to when the jazz guitar joins. It's catchy and quirky. Cool guitar chords too. The melody feels swung but then you start throwing in straight quavers in the jazz guitar and it is a bit distressing. Is it supposed to be swung or not? Making it all swung should remove the problem to some degree I think...?

Just listened to all your music and I just want to say that you're doing great! The music is fun to listen to, and they all seem to be feel good songs, which is always a nice thing. Keep it up, I look forward to hearing more! :D

@Andy: The swung against the stright is intentional. The only time when it sounds wierd to me is when the drums join onward. I would fix it, but every part was made a specific way that means I can't change them without losing what they are meant to be.

@Cash: Thanks! There was one pretty dark song. I might try to make more downbeat songs, but I definitely won't stop making upbeat ones.

I decided to change the drums the tiniest bit and it sounds a bit better now.

Backstory time! In the beginning of me composing, before I knew of Musescore, I used a mobile app called Musepad (Not affiliated with Musescore). It is unlike any music notation software I've ever found, but that's not the point. Most of my compositions are on that. Most of them are horrible, but I plan to make them better, like I did with World 3. I have decided to work on a "project", if you will, of putting the songs into Musescore. Not as easy as it sounds because Musepad uses a file, which when I looked it up, it said that the file was an incorrect file because it's the file used for searches on a certain search engine. I don't remember which search engine, though. Anyway, I have to input the songs into Musescore from scratch. I will do this, make the songs that need to be made better, better, and put them here. Right now I have a song that was already fine. It's based off of my forest theme (The one not from After). It might be some sort of credits them or something. It has a repeat, but it also has an ending after the repeat, so if you're too lazy to listen to the whole repeat, but want to hear the ending, just skip ahead. Here it is.

I like this one, feels mystical. The only complaint I have is that the melody can't be heard when it's in the bass instruments, but other than that it was very enjoyable.

Do you mean it's hard to hear the steel drum part as more instruments are added? By the time the flute joins, that technically becomes the melody.

The entire song is comprised of two chords. F major and G major (with some dissonance from the steel drums, which stay in F major).

Forest Reprise is just violoncello and flute. I don't think steel drum would quite fit the mood I'm going for in that one.

More old stuff that was spruced up! Well, not the first one. That's the same. WARNING! More backstory incoming! The first song was composed with the intention of being an emotional song that would play throughout a story at sad or reuniting-esque happy points. I never expected it to be as emotional as I ended up making it. I (and a few people I played it for) actually almost (extreme stress on the almost) cried the first time I heard it. Since then, no. Slight emotion when listening to it, but nothing else. The other song was a song I made that I practically completely changed to be based off of Frozen Peak.

Glad you posted because I have a question. I have a World 5 song that's ready to be put on here, but I want to remake my World 1 theme first. I can't find any inspiration for it, though. Should I just post the World 5 theme without it?

Also, World 6 is based off of Frozen Peak, so that's probably why it sounds like me to you.

Very well, then. I'll put it up. Also, it's not that I like to put things up in pairs, I just prefer to put multiple things up at once so that I don't flood my music threads with posts. Here's the song. (And just so you know, Andy, this song is also based off of another. Let's see if you can figure it out.) Tell me if it's percussion-heavy. I was asking someone while I was making it if it was good and she said to add some more percussion. So I did. I think it sounds good, but I can't tell if it's percussion-heavy for the feel I was going for.

I have finally come up with a good World 1 Map Theme! And by good, I mean better than the monstrosity I had before. Just in case you guys haven't noticed, I have been going by general Mario standards for world types. World 1 is grass, World 3 is beach, World 5 is forest, and World 6 is ice. When the missing numbers come out (2,4,7,8, and maybe bonus world 9), I won't state what world types they are because I want to see if Andy can figure them out. Insert evil laughter here.

Had a listen to a bunch of these w/ a friend. Her fav was Joplin Manor. I liked the self-quotation in Magmaton Battle, but Mountain Mineshaft set the best atmosphere for me :)

I do really enjoy Joplin Manor and I love how Mountain Mineshaft sounds, especially since I updated it with Mixcraft. I was a bit unsure of Magmaton Battle because I basically just used the same phrase over and over for the entire song with a small break near the beginning.

Six new songs and a couple new leitmotifs. I also updated some of the older stuff with better quality since my last update, and renamed most of the map themes because I forgot to do that in the last update. Well, here ya go!

Polluted Lake is really groovy! Just wondering, how do you compose these?

Um... what do you mean by "how"? That could mean a lot of things.

As in what approach do you take? how long does each track take etc.

Guess that depends. Different each time, though I usually don't take longer than one session of work. And I usually have an idea of what I want to do in advance. Sometimes I just go in the deep end with no plan, though.
