Title: Static's Misc. Arrangements - NEW: Fourside - my first big band arrangement!
Post by: Static on May 13, 2017, 08:02:05 PM
Welcome to my miscellaneous arrangements thread!

This is where I will be stockpiling my admittedly small, but slowly growing collection of random arrangements.

Most of these sheets are from my old MuseScore days (late 2015-early 2016); basically shortly before I joined NSM. There's some VGM arrangements that are too different to really be considered for the site, though I do plan to properly arrange them later (particularly the Animal Crossing ones). Right now, it's almost all VGM, but hopefully I'll get some more arrangements completed eventually. There's a lot of part-writing errors and formatting errors all over the place in these since they're from before I really started studying up on theory and notation principles, so do your best to ignore those lol. If anyone is genuinely interested in either playing or just having one of these arrangements, let me know and I'll do my best to fix up what I have.

You know, if there's one thing I learned from digging up these old sheets, it's that I should write for drums more often lol. Percussion in general, really.

Anyway, without further ado, take a look:

So, I did this for a theory class project, where my task was to choose a song or songs of my choice, write them in a classical chorale style, and analyze them (I did this on a printed copy though lol, so no writing of mine is on these files). Of course, I wanted to do VGM, and I thought Chrono Trigger's OST would be a perfect fit. Sure enough, it was. I chose the 4 tracks that I thought best fit this style of writing. While I'm not a very big fan of chorale or classical music, at least not as much as other types, I think this was a really interesting project to do.

Since this is a fangame, I figured I'd put it with my other misc. arrangements here since this won't ever get on the main site anyway lol. Anyway, this song is really neat. It's not really ZUN's style of course, it's very J-pop-ish, but nonetheless it sounds really good. I plan on arranging more tracks from this game in the future so expect that probably. Also, if you're a Touhou fan and you haven't played this game, you're missing out lol. It's just as fun to play as the main series Touhou games.
Title: Static's Misc. Arrangements - NEW: Daydream Café (GochiUsa OP) for Solo Trombone

You can never know what to expect next from me, and this is yet another example of that (or maybe you did expect this lol). Anyways, about the arrangement:

I'm not the biggest fan of GochiUsa out there, but I find the music in it to be quite good so I figured I'd try arranging something from it. Arranging anime openings and credits themes is always pretty fun. I tried to include most of the different lines, though it's hard for just one trombone lol. I played around with the articulations and dynamics a bit to make the song sound better for trombone as well. Also, I included chords and lyrics, so that's pretty neat I suppose. Any comments/suggestions/feedback is more than welcome, as always.

It's been awhile, but I'm finally here with another miscellaneous arrangement! For this sheet, I mainly stuck to the instrumentation of the original GameCube version of the song, while blending in the Wild World/City Folk and New Leaf versions. The Wild World/City Folk 5 P.M. was probably the trickiest to fit in since the original is actually in 3/4. In this sheet, you'll mainly hear it interspersed as short little licks from the various instruments. I even added some original stuff to give the arrangement some added flair. Hopefully it all worked out pretty well.

Also, it's worth noting that I actually used MuseScore this time around. I figured some music that I was already pretty familiar with would be a good place to start with getting reacquainted with the program again.

I came up with this idea many months ago and decided to go forward with it on a whim. As it started coming together, I asked my school's band director if our jazz band (which I play trombone in) could play it, and to my surprise (and delight), he said yes! We've already played through it a few times and it's honestly such a blast to play, not to mention one of the greatest opportunities I've had so far to hear my own sheets performed live.

Regarding the arrangement itself, I kept it pretty straightforward and similar to the original song, though I did add a full band section, a remixed variation, and a neat little ending. I tried using lots of common jazz idioms and ideas that I've seen in other pieces (or just happened to think of) and combined them together to make some interesting stuff. For my first time making one of these, I think this is a pretty good base for future jazz arrangements I plan to do. I'd also like to thank Olimar for taking the time to comb through the sheet (multiple times), and for providing really useful tips and advice for jazz arranging; I wouldn't have been able to make this at this level without his help.

To top all this off, Olimar's band performed the chart as well, and I couldn't be more happy to hear a higher-level group play it. He uploaded the recording, which I will link here (https://soundcloud.com/olimar12345/the-metropolis-of-fourside-earthbound-for-big-band).
