Title: Super Mario Odyssey

THAT TRAILER WAS AWESOME, IMO!
What do you guys think of what we've seen?

Very impressive-looking game. Do you like it better than Sunshine?

What kind of question is that? It hasn't even released yet = he hasn't played it yet.

Some people make their opinions before they play the game. Nothing wrong with that.

;) ftfy

But I do think this will be a great game all around, and who knows? It may rank among the GameCube titles (there are several in my top 10 list). At least there's a new gimmick XDD

So what do you think the Moon Coins will do aside from possibly being costume currency, if anything? Will they be like blue coins?

Bad mainline 2D / 3D Mario platforming game*

I'll give you that NSMB2 was the least good of the NSMB games (nothing can ever stand up to the sheer brilliance of NSMBU and NSLU) but I still had a ton of fun with it.

Super Mario Bros. 2 is just a lame Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic port with Mario characters and other minor changes. If it wasn't for the replacement of the four main characters, title screen and ending cutscene, it wouldn't be a Mario game at all. Do I like Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic? Yes. Do I like SMB2? No.

I don't own Super Mario 3D World, so for now, I won't say anything about it.

Quote from: mastersuperfan on June 13, 2017, 08:42:59 PMMario Teaches Typing

I wouldn't even start. Comparing Mario Teaches Typing with any main series Mario game is like comparing apples to oranges. It wasn't made by Nintendo, nor was it made for a Nintendo console. What can you expect from a game where Mario teaches typing?

What, as if that changes anything? If I was ragging on the game for being, say, boring, difficult, or not immersive, then I'd have no ground to stand on if I'd never played it. Those traits will be different for every player based on their skill set and story preferences. The battle system, however (which I have heard plenty about), is fundamentally flawed and will not change based on each player. It's mechanically unfinished and turns the game from a somewhat bland Paper Mario title to a trial-and-error, backtracky, grindy mess. Fact.

I can see that the battle system is flawed, but basing your opinion after the Internet's isn't fair at all. Can you really call the whole game "bad" because of a single aspect you've never really had experience with yourself? Paper Mario's not all battle. It's much more than that.

Reminds me of a little something

True, but that doesn't mean people can't like it. Sometimes, one has to look past the major flaws in something to truly enjoy it. It wasn't a good game as part of a series, but it's still enjoyable to play. Definitely not as good as the other Paper Marios, though.

I see these "Doki Doki Panic is Super Mario Bros. 2" discussions all the time, and I always see a decent amount of people who really don't like SMB2, but I have never seen one which likes the original DDP, but dislikes the literal re-skin at the same time.

My guess would be that he thinks that because he didn't grow up with SMB2 (USA). To most of us that was the real super mario bros 2 until the internet came around.

besides, what we would later find out was the real smb2 sucks.

Post by: Dudeman on June 14, 2017, 12:00:23 PM
Yeah, for all American intents and purposes, The Lost Levels is a ROMhack of the first game and more of a footnote than a sequel. SMB2 has always been Doki Doki Reskin in my mind and I enjoy the game on its own merits.

Wrong. I discovered "The Lost Levels" after SMB2 (USA), and I've played both of them. I've known about USA for quite some time, but nowadays it just doesn't look like a Mario game. That said, SMB2 (JP) isn't that much of an improvement, either. Poison Mushrooms, wind, more tricky levels, differences between Mario & Luigi's physics, and minor graphical & audial tweaks. It's just a harder SMB with more levels.

I agree with Dudeman on this.

also the Super Mario Wiki page has a whole list of differences but my point still stands (https://www.mariowiki.com/Super_Mario_Bros.:_The_Lost_Levels)

*reads topic*

oops

Actually, I didn't find Sticker Star, like, unbearable or anything... but that was probably because I resorted to using a guide the whole way through. Without one I honestly can't imagine anyone enjoying the game, trying to look in every little spot in the levels to find random thing stickers. And that's only one half of it; the battle system wasn't very good, either.

I actually played it through twice (lol completionism, screw you Wiggler segment drawings), but it's definitely a game I'd never touch again. Just saying. I mentioned it because I know a lot of people do dislike it and I completely understand why. Plus, that was back when I was, like, what, still in elementary school and I could get enjoyment out of pretty much anything?

Also, Super Mario 3D World is amazing. Better than every other Mario 3D platformer out there. I'd even say it's better than 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy. YES, I SAID IT. I MEAN IT. FIGHT ME.

(also you do realize Mario Teaches Typing was a joke right that's why I used the strikethrough formatting)

D:< BLASPHEMY!!!
Jkjk everyone has their own opinions~
As far as SM3DW goes, it's a pretty fun game. I never got all that far through it (thanks, school), but from what I saw it was decent all-around. Really like the cat concept and its implementation!

Back to Odyssey, I swear I have to think twice every time I type Odyssey, but more importantly:
Before I saw the trailer and really thought about it, I just kinda pushed all the talk about it being Sunshine 2 to the side. I just didn't believe it; as far as sequels went, I was expecting a legit "Sunshine 2" in name: some island out in the ocean, Shadow Mario screwing everything up (or something similar), and then Shine Sprites. But now that I've seen the trailer, I've started wondering if this is truly the sequel we've been waiting for. I say this looking at the Green Moon coins. They seem too similar to blue coins to overlook, and while most can't say it without cringing, the blue coin hunt was a staple in Sunshine. Of course, all of this is just my thoughts, and when the game is released in late October, we could all be completely wrong apart from what we've seen (which hopefully is very little of the game). That's the fun part of waiting for games: the suspense. As for me? I won't be viewing any video aside from the trailer I posted in the OP. No demos, speculations, nothing.

Yeah^
I remember a game theory about Peach and Pauline. I found it pretty funny. Like, how can Mario like Peach and Pauline..? It's gonna be funny to see where MatPat takes this...considering his theory on this game already.

As for my thoughts on the game and the gameplay that I observed so far, it looks fabulous. The music, new yet retro playstyle, and the graphics. Looks sweet. I don't know about anyone else, but I've been getting the Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie vibe from it. Little things like interacting with characters, going into buildings (like in the Banjo Games), the introduction to the areas, and even to a point, the music. Just little insignificant things like that. I'm excited! I was pretty surprised to see that they are bumping it up to October. I mean, Breath of the Wild was bumped back like...3 times.
Also, the reference to Donkey Kong excites me as well. Having them as interactive, 3D, updated characters would be amazing.

I believe the manual for Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis stated that Pauline and Mario were "good friends" at the time, which clears up the confusion concerning Mario's love life.

Hoooo boy, only 4 days left.

And apparently leaks and spoilers (!) are already about, so y'all best keep your eyes peeled shut if you want to save the surprises for yourself.

I actually just now saw SMG4 ranting about that on Twitter. Bleh. I'm trying to avoid any and all spoilers, but the TV commercial looked amazing! It's gonna be a long 4 days :P

Yeah I swore off trailers and pre-release knowledge a while back. I don't want to risk the next Super Mario 64 being spoiled for me.

Quote from: SlowPokemon on October 23, 2017, 05:57:00 AMthe next Super Mario 64

Itz gunna be huge

The problem with my parents, though, is that they hate it when I ask them to order games for me between holidays, even though I pay. So it looks like I won't be asking for Odyssey until Christmas.

Good news, though! There are still a bunch of games I haven't beaten yet; Paper Mario, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Super Mario Advance 2 & 3, Sonic Mania, Mega Man 7, 8, & 10, Mega Man X1-6, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario 64 DS, etc. I have plenty to do with my free time, and I should have plenty of it once the musical's over.

This is an issue!!!!!!!!
Same thing with not being able to get Odyssey, but you can't do much about that (unless you don't have a copy of Sunshine)

I've been putting off finishing X1. I keep getting to the first Sigma phase and dying. And when I pause it and leave the room, my dad comes in and turns the GameCube off. If X1 had a decent password system I could start at the beginning of any Sigma stage and this wouldn't be an issue.

There are so many great things about Odyssey! One minor tidbit that I appreciated was the updated voice acting for Bowser, Peach and Mario; they're not just using re-used sound clips anymore. It was hilarious when Mario cap'tured a frog and his inner Martinet goes, "Ribbett... ribbett?"

I thought the game was really short until I found out the number of Power Moons in the game

Also I'm missing three coins in the spoiler post game kingdom and I have no idea where they are >:/

Agreed. Towards the beginning after the Cascade Kingdom I was beginning to feel rushed, especially when Cappy made me go on to the Sand Kingdom instead of letting me go back to the Cap Kingdom.

Having finished the main story, here's are my top 3 likes & dislikes (put in spoilers for obvious reasons):
3 Best Parts
1. The music!!!! Gah, "Jump Up, Super Star!", "Cascade Kingdom", "Steam Gardens", Bowser's Kingdom's music, and "Honeylune Ridge: Escape" are golden!
2. All the references!!! In the Mushroom Kingdom especially, I've found references to most (if not all) of the storyline series (or what this game is a part of)!
3. The creativity behind many aspects of the game: such as the way you follow that Tostarenaen all around the game, and those awesome kingdoms you land in after getting shot down by Bowser! Not to mention those tropical Wigglers!
[close]

3 Worst Parts
1. The boss fights: Some of them were okay, but I found that a lot of them were 100% scare factor only and hilariously easy. Such as that massif Dragon.
2. The steering controls: OKAY, THAT ONE 2D LEVEL IN THE MUSHROOM KINGDOM WHERE YOU GET TO THOSE SPINNING DISKS AND HAVE TO STAY ON THAT MOVING BACKGROUND. RIGHT IS RIGHT AND LEFT IS LEFT, DANG IT
3. Game Over?: I mean, it makes things easier, sure, but I think the game would've been perfect had they added an actual lives system, not just docking you TEN coins (or arbitrary the very least, they could've raised the revival price)
