Music / Is King Hippo's intro theme based on anything?
December 21, 2016, 01:22:24 PM
I've been trying to figure this out for a long time: Is King Hippo's theme from Punch-Out!! (NES) based on any pre-existing song?

Most of the other boxers have intro music that either comes from or is inspired by their country of origin (Sakura, Sakura for Piston Honda, Song of the Volga Boatmen for Soda Popinski, etc.), but I cannot for the life of me figure out if that also applies to King Hippo's little waltz. It's clearly not from the Pacific Islands, it sounds more like something Strauss or Tchaikovsky would write.

It very well could be an original song, but if anyone recognizes it, let me know. I'm at a loss here.

Just updated it (I actually just finished the edits before seeing the dynamic marking, but remembered it while I was fixing the rest. I added a mezzo-piano marking).

I'm really excited for Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, so I made a cover of Water Town from the first Shantae game (slash Sky's theme from Pirate's Curse). Hope you enjoy!

I'M FINISHED! With my next piano arrange vid, Kid Icarus! Some of these are already on the site, but most aren't yet. Hoping to submit them soon.

First submission in a LONG while! Here to fulfill a request, actually. Let me know if there are any formatting things I need to change, it's been a while.

I love this tune! Here's a quick 'n' dirty arrangement. If you folks like it enough I may submit it for the site.
The highest notes in the original song aren't possible on piano, so those notes are written in small with the suggested notes an octave down.

It seems to be a different problem than that, but I'm not the only person who it's happened to today so I imagine Google will find the bug and squash it.

Even my video manager says they're in HD, YouTube just isn't playing them in HD anymore. I'm hoping this is an issue YouTube can resolve itself, and quickly. Thanks for the heads-up, this seems like a big YT problem.

Okay, I looked into it and there seem to be a problem with YouTube in general. Not sure if it's just applying to my channel, but for some reason it's only giving 360p options, sometimes 720p (it's weirdly inconsistent). I upload everything in 1080p, which was working earlier, so I have no idea why YouTube isn't playing them in HD right now.

Really? There should be a 1080p option...
If there isn't, I'll have to look into it, maybe reupload.

New video! This time, Wrecking Crew!
Hope you all enjoy it, I have a lot more planned.

Hey everyone! It's been a long time. I'm hoping to get back into arranging soon, but until then I've started putting arrangements up on my new YouTube channel. I just put up my first piano OST there, The Mysterious Murasame Castle. I'm looking to put a lot more up there in the coming weeks and months, so I'd appreciate anyone heading over to check it out! They'll include arrangements of songs both on the site and off, so if you're interested give them a look.
They are just MIDI though, which is why I'm not posting this in the performance thread. I'm not really able to record myself live quite yet. But those looking for piano arrangements of old-school soundtracks, I want to make this a strong resource.

Thanks, and I look forward to arranging again!

I like the changes. Do you want me to make the materials, or do you already have them?

Whew, sorry about the long wait! Things are starting to get back to normal around here. I like your suggestion, Bespinben; I was initially hesitant to doing something like this, wanting to keep things as close to the original melody as possible, but I realized that being a piano arrangement there are times when some liberties must be taken. I may have even gone a little further; trying to match the harmonies and contour implied by the countermelody even if it's not possible to fully replicate it in the arrangement.
I am worried it might be a bit "much"; I'll upload the materials in just a minute, let me know what you think. I'm bouncing between what I have in the update, and the simpler solution you suggested.

I know; I've just been caught up with my own thing for a while and haven't had time to go over my arrangements. Hope to get back to it very soon.
