Music / When composers use gibberish lyrics
May 27, 2014, 01:50:58 PM
There's a term for this... what is it? When an artist/composer uses a choir in the background and it sounds like they're speaking real words, even a foreign language, but in actuality it's made up and doesn't mean anything.

Help! / Finale Monopolizes the Sound Card
December 30, 2013, 11:43:45 PM
First time using Finale 2012 since purchasing it, and unlike 2011, I can't play mp3s on other sound programs while Finale is open. I get messages like this on Audacity, for example:

I'm running Finale 2012 through Windows 7 on a Toshiba Satellite, if that affects anything.

Help! / Differences in Quality of Playback
December 16, 2013, 06:26:17 PM
I keep telling myself that I don't need to use the help thread anymore >.< Nope.

This is probably just a matter of pushing a button, but compare the playback on these two versions of "Daisy Circuit:"

Deku's Version

Simple Copy/Paste of the same notes

Hear how my copy/paste one sounds like it's coming out of the back of the speakers? What makes the difference? Is it an instrument? I'm tired of my arrangements sounding so "pingy" on playback.

Music / [NDS] Pokemon B/W - "Battle! Ghetsis"
September 04, 2013, 08:32:54 PM
Anyone want a challenge? I'm looking to get the first Ghetsis battle theme arranged using its original instruments. So timpani, bass drum; the works. Wanna give it a shot?

Music / All Percussion VGM?

Help! / Using Both Speakers
August 23, 2013, 07:43:44 PM
Anyone know how to have Finale separate out cleffs so that (for example), left hand plays out of one speaker and right hand out the other?

I have an arrangement right now that plays 4 hands all out of ONE speaker. It just sounds mushy and the speaker crackles from all the voices.

Help! / Finding the Percussion MIDI Map
July 26, 2013, 08:54:03 PM
There have been at least a few arrangements on NSM that use things like hand claps and foot stomps. I can't seem to find the MIDI map for them anywhere...

MakeMusic help says to go to Utilities -> Change Instrument, but I can't find that option in Finale 2011 xD.
My next attempt was to go to the ScoreManager and assign the measure to a specific layer, and then place that layer on channel 10 (the channel for percussion), but that also came back fruitless.

Anyone familiar with what to do?

Help! / Making a Solo into a Duet/2 Pianos Score
February 03, 2013, 12:02:42 PM
This is effectively a request, but I don't want Shado coming after me if it's wrong to put it in that thread ::)

I need this piece:

-- made into a 1 piano duet or 2 pianos duet (doesn't really matter either way). I'm not really sure what should be expanded upon and/or what can be split though. Any ideas?

Help! / Fattening up Arrangements
November 30, 2012, 12:37:21 PM
The thing I've always struggled with, and that Bespinben could always do effortlessly, was really filling up songs to include voices that don't even translate well on piano.
Take his arrangement of Dialga's Fight to the Finish as an example. By measure 24 he's imitating the stinking snare drum! >:( HOW DOES HE DO IT

This problem has found itself in a lot of my arrangements, but a current example would be Phantom Ganon from Wind Waker:

Does anyone have some tips?

Day 3:

SocialFox and Bubbles           vs.              MaestroUGC and BlackDragon Slayer

Wolves Win

1. MaestroUGC-- The point where we started to see you was during Night 2. As late as this was, you definitely did a nice job to keep the humans on track. Bubbles had a guide through you, your suspicions were spot on, and your conversation with Zunawe was incredibly helpful for the human team. You pushed for a lynch of davy in the chat log, and though it was bad to remove the last FoN, it was still impressive that you were able to figure out that davy was not human. Thanks for stepping up to the plate when everyone else was dying.

2. Zunawe—I liked how you separated yourself from your role right off the bat. Questions about the FoN's role in chats and in the thread were a good choice. However, as you already know, you can't let other players get to you. Bird is a tough player, but that doesn't mean you have to spill the beans. There's almost always an explanation that can get you out of a tight spot. While your activity in the thread left more to be desired, you were very prompt with PMs and your analysis with davy was really well done (even if it was a little inaccurate). You're getting better in TWG each time. Keep it up!

3. SocialFox-- Wolf MVP To be honest, I really didn't want to give this to you :P While you cranked out a victory, you also wolfed Jub, you wolfed Bird, and you even attempted to corrupt Bird. Your suspicions on humans were waaay off and how you managed to be sure that those 2 out of the other 9 players were humans, I don't really know.
On a happier note, though, you were one of the most active players of the game. While you didn't offer much in chats besides basic questions, you always kept those communication lines open-- which is invaluable for a wolf faking humanity. Sorry about the time zone mix-ups. Took me a while to get it right...

4. gzgregory-- Your death was really random. Sorry about how that turned out. I was actually pulling for the FoN, given that they were a new team and all. Thanks for your involvement, however short-lived it was!

5. Bubbles7689-- Pit! You were great in your PM convos. Discussions with Verm about suspicions, who you should use your powers on, talks with Maestro, etc. These were all great decisions and you were prompt in responses. I felt like you needed to be a bit more directing to the thread. While I saw you a lot in PMs, other players felt like you just were never there! When you have more info than anyone else, don't be afraid to make decisions! I was writing this throughout each of the phases, so bear with me—nice involvement in the last couple phases! You kept everyone on track and asked tons of questions. I liked how you really stepped up to the plate. The human team thanks you!
I probably wouldn't have taken out all the FoN if I was in your position, but I also realize that everyone around you was pretty set on removing them from the game. The FoN may have saved the humans in the end.

6. the_last_sheikah—Bit of a different playing style for you this game. I believe you said earlier in the game that you were confused. Your role was also a Centurion (not very exciting role, huh?). These two pieces paired together don't really encourage activity, but hey it's whatevah. Not every game can be a "Perfect Apples"  game :P

7. FSM-Reapr-- Human MVP Guarded by a wolf of all players? :P Woooow. Your reasoning was kind of meh in attempting to get the FoN to claim to you. If there's one thing the FoN shouldn't do, it's tell Hades who they are. Were you actually receiving claims or was that a lie? Your lynch in Day 1 was kind of expected, as I'm sure you knew :P Verm and Bubbles were pretty sure you weren't actually Hades, but they couldn't stop the firestorm lynch that Bird encouraged. HOWEVER, the reason you've received MVP is because you gained so many claims for Bubbles to use. While they weren't always real claims  ::) , you instantly thought over a plan and used it. It really pushed the game forward. When davy claimed Magnus, it helped Bubbles tremendously to see right through him. Had more players known about it, or had you claimed a different role than Hades, it might have worked better. Love your activity man! Every game you are spot on and devoted! Wish you could have morphed... I was excited.

8. Jub3r7-- I was really looking forward to you playing as a wolf this game :( Can't believe you got wolfed of all things. Thanks for playing regardless.

9. BlackDragonSlayer—Honorable Mention This was your first game? You did great! Seriously your activity was awesome for a game as confusing as this one. You'll think the next TWG is the easiest thing you've ever played :D Surprisingly, your suspicions were actually pretty accurate (starting in about Day 2).

10. vermilionvermin-- Kind of atypical Verm this game: In the thread you were kind of in 'n out. Seemed like posts were more to keep everyone on track rather than offer new insights/suspicions. However, in PMs you were great. Bubbles relied on your comments and inputs and used them till the end of the game. You guys got all the FoN! I probably would have left more alive, but it was an impressive feat to find them nevertheless.

11. Bird—Sorry for pissing you off on the first phase end. It was a wee bit long. During the game, you relied on FSM being a new and ignorant player. While his strategy wasn't exactly the best, he definitely wasn't the Hades you thought he was! Because of this, you were actually encouraging players to send claims to FSM :P Nice job encouraging the FSM lynch. However I'm not quite sure I understand- while you got a top human out, didn't you think he was Hades (by the PM you sent me)? Why waste him? Claiming Viridi definitely threw a stick in things. Zunawe was totally caught off guard, since davy found HIM through seering. I think he started to have his own doubts about who his partners were. Your role in the chat was dastardly, to say the least. Nice job squeezing out info. Your death was by wolfing, which was especially hilarious since you had guarded yourself.

12. davy-- FoN MVP Why oh why did you ask for the phase extension on the thread?!? That killed you (literally) man! Bird suspected you and wanted to wolf you, claiming that no player would ask that besides a special human. Concurrently, Verm was positive that meant you were a wolf. Either way, your death was guaranteed. Great activity, and nice job on the seering. If you could have survived for one more day, you could have got Hades-- I'm almost sure of it. :)
Sorry for the preemptive lynch :( It was a total brain-fart. If it makes you feel any better, though, Bubbles and Maestro had agreed in PM to lynch you. Bubbles meant to vote for you but didn't until I had already made the mistake.

The game—Well I think it had a lot of potential. Unfortunately, I was not able to come up with every possible outcome before starting the game. Questions were coming in constantly, which is good, but it also made me realize how much more info I should have made available on the first page. I feel like everyone enjoyed it, and it was a good step into more complicated games. Any objections?

The host—I was 'meh.' Could have been better. While phase ends were on time, there was a lot of griping about extensions and time zones, etc. I should have just left everything how it was at the start and not even asked about reductions/extensions. It ended up being a successful game, but I could have done more in making it smoother.

The Werewolf Game / TWG XL: Uprising Madness
September 26, 2012, 10:23:37 PM
To paraphrase this game, there are three teams- wolves, independents, and humans. All three teams are competing for their own victories. Certain roles possess "divinity," which protects from other teams' attacks (excluding corruptions/seerings/wolfings/lynchings/corrections). No teams know who their partners are.

TWG XL: Uprising Madness

Underworld Army (UA): (Wolves)

1. Lord of the Underworld- Hades (Master Wolf Converter) During the day, Hades will choose a player to corrupt. If the targeted player has divinity, they will be turned into an underworld slave at the end of the next night phase. Corrupted players lose their abilities as slaves and become red. Corruptions are not public. Hades does not possess divinity.
2. God of Death- Thanatos (Wolf Guardian) Thanatos can guard any one player each night from attacks (Pit/Forces of Nature/Hades/Pandora/Magnus). Thanny-poo is immune to attacks from both Pit and the Forces of Nature. Thanatos does not possess divinity.
3. Goddess of Calamity- Pandora (Wolf Seer) Pandora can pick a target each night to seer. She receives color and whether or not the person has divinity. Magnus will be seer'd as the player he became during that night phase. Pandora possesses divinity.

Forces of Nature (FoN): (Independents)

4. Goddess of Nature- Viridi (Independent Seer) May seer each night phase for color. Does not possess divinity.
5. Arlon the Serene (Independent Seer) May seer each night phase for fellow independents. If they are not an independent, no results are given. Does not possess divinity.
6. Phosphora the Lightning Flash (Independent) May seer each night phase for fellow independents. If they are not an independent, no results are given. Does not possess divinity.

The FoN hate everybody, but their victory relies on alliances with other teams. They must "correct" (equivalent of a wolfing) 1 player each night, but their kill can be changed/nulled in several ways:
a. If they correct a divine player, the target's divine status will be permanently removed, but the target will survive.
b. If they correct a corrupted player, that player will revert back to their original self and team. The FoN are told at the start of the night phase if a player will be corrupted that phase. A decision to save that player does not use up that night's correction. The identity of the saved player is secret.
c. If they correct Pit, one FoN commander will die at random and Pit will survive.

If Hades is corrected, the FoN will stop their nightly corrections and Hades will be captured (which will be publicly noted). The Underworld can save Hades by wolfing all FoN. If the game ends while the FoN have a hold of Hades, the FoN win. Both other teams lose.
Alternatively, if Hades is wolfed or lynched, the FoN's objective will change to eliminating everyone else (when this occurs, it will be privately noted to the FoN -- Pit and Thanatos become vulnerable).

Palutena's Army (PA): (Humans)

7. Goddess of Light- Palutena (Guardian) Palutena has weakened divine force from the UA and FoN overstepping their realms. As such, she may become divine for one night phase of her choice (sends PM that night). May guard one player each night from everything except corrections (may not self-guard).
8. Master Swordsman- Magnus (Morph/seer) – Magnus can interact with other teams. During the day he will select a username (by PM) and effectively "become" that player for the course of the following night. (Ex/ If Magnus selects a wolf, he may vote for wolfings). If he attempts to become Hades, he will become corrupted and join the underworld as a slave. Does not possess divinity. Magnus cannot copy divinity.
9. Captain of the Guard- Pit (Role-Blocker) Pit attacks with light and prevents targets from performing their night actions (Sends a night PM). If he targets a FoN commander with this attack, the FoN is killed. If Pit is attacked by the FoN, one of the FoN will die, and Pit will survive. Possesses divinity.
10. Centurion (Human) Possesses divinity
11. Centurion (Human) Possesses divinity
12. Centurion (Human) Does not possess divinity

Divinity
a. Divine players are protected from Magnus impersonations, Pit attacks, and one FoN correction
b. If a divine player is attacked by Hades' corruption, they will become an underworld slave.

(Note: Wolfings and corrections are proportional- Ex/ Two wolves vote for one player and one wolf votes for another = 66% chance the first player dies and 33% chance the second dies. Both wolfing and corrections are listed as "attacks" (or "kills" if successful) to avoid distinction.

Potential Outcomes:
1) Wolves outnumber humans (not FoN + humans!)                         --> Wolves vs. FoN deathmatch (one team must eradicate the other)

2) All wolves are killed                                                                       --> Humans vs. FoN deathmatch (one team must eradicate the other)

3) FoN have Hades when either outcome 1) or outcome 2) occurs   --> FoN wins

4) All FoN are killed                                                                            --> Either outcome 1) or 2) must occur (like in typical TWG games)

*To repeat an old fact, when Hades is captured, he's effectively dead, and the wolf count reflects that.
*In outcome 1), the remaining humans stay alive, and can lynch as they please. However, the human team has already lost, and their lynches can solely affect whether or not the wolves win or the FoN win.

PMs are still being sent! PMs have been sent!

Things to Keep in Mind:
1. The phase ends on the dot in terms of votes and powers, even if I'm a couple minutes late.
2. Wolves may send in as many votes as they want. The last vote is what counts.
3. This is a confusing game, and I get that. SEND ME QUESTIONS! I'd love to answer them.
4. FoN alliances are KEY. Just because you, a wolf, find a FoN does not necessarily mean they should be wolfed! Likewise, just because you, a human, find a FoN does not necessarily mean they should be lynched! They can benefit both teams, and the FoN can't win themselves without help from others.

It is now Night 1. Night 1 ends Saturday, September 29, 2012, at 11PM EST/10PM CST/9PM MST/8PM PST/7PM AST

Well if a religion topic is allowed... then why not a politics thread? Most people don't care for it in the main "Post Your Thoughts of the Moment" thread anyhow.

How about the RNC and DNC?

So I have one month left with my piano teacher before it's back to college. I'm looking for a really beautiful/inspiring piece to work on for the rest of the summer. It can be classical of VGM. Anyone have any suggestions? Possibly pieces you've worked on before?
