The Werewolf Game / Mafia Championship: Season 11
March 20, 2024, 12:40:24 AM
INVITATION TO THE MAFIA CHAMPIONSHIP (SEASON 11)

Ahoy there! :)

I'm very excited to invite your community to participate in Season 11 of the Mafia Championship.

The Mafia Championship is an annual forum-based tournament series that pits representatives from various online Mafia (aka Werewolf) communities against one another as they compete to determine the Internet's greatest forum Mafia players. Each participating community democratically elects one person to represent them and be their "Champion".

The tournament first started back in 2013. Since then, 380+ different communities and 50+ different nationalities have been represented.

It's a super fun event that has created many new friendships and close bonds between communities. I hope that you would be interested in taking part :)

1. DO YOU ACCEPT THE INVITATION?

If your community wishes to participate, please confirm your participation to Lissa or Arapocalypse as soon as you can to ensure yourselves a spot. Currently, the plan is to accommodate 120 communities this season. If there is further interest, additional communities may sign up as substitutes; generally there are some replacements needed both before and during games.

If your community agrees to participate, the deadline for selecting your representative is April 20th, but the sooner the better.

The games will take place on Mafia Universe. If it's okay, I can link directly to the general discussion thread regarding this topic on Mafia Universe.

Important notes
  • You may decide yourselves how you want to elect your representative, but we highly recommend some sort of democratic process (public nominations followed by a poll usually works out well).
  • In addition to electing a representative, you should also name an alternate who will be asked to step in if the first choice needs to back out.
  • Your representative should be prepared for having to read upwards of 600-700 posts per 24 hours during the early stages of the game. Additionally, there's a requirement that each player must make at least 10 posts per Game Day. Only active players should apply/participate. I repeat: Your chosen player needs to be able to promise a good amount of activity on a daily basis!
2. SEASON 11 FORMAT

The tournament structure
  • 120 communities will participate, each sending one representative.
  • QUALIFIERS: 8 Qualifier Games will be played, consisting of 15 players each. I.e. every representative plays in one Qualifier Game. The players themselves vote post-game to determine who is deserving of advancement. 1st and 2nd place will advance to the Semifinal Games.
  • SEMIFINALS: A Jury consisting of finalists from Season 8 will select 27 additional players to advance to the three Semifinal Games. From each game, five players will advance to the Finale Game based on a post-game player vote, just like in the qualifying phase.
  • THE FINALE: The Finale Game is played. Once it has completed, the winning team will receive the title of Season 11 Champions and a winner's certificate signed by Dmitry Davidoff, the creator of mafia. Players will also vote for additional awards including Best Team Player and Best Sportsmanship.
The qualifier games will be played using the Matrix Mayhem 5x5 setup (see below for more details), and the semifinal/finale games will be played using a different setup(s). The semifinal/finale setup(s) will be finalized around the end of June, for which the candidate setups are detailed here.

This year's qualifier setup: Matrix Mayhem 5x5
(table code isn't working for some reason so see attached image for setup)

The setup is determined by randomly selecting one row or column from the above matrix, and then adding 9 Vanilla Townies and 1 Mafia Goon. This will always result in 12 Town members (3 of which are Power Roles) and 3 Mafia members (1 or 2 of which are Power Roles).

  • For example, if Column A was randomly selected, the setup would be a Town 3-shot Tracker, Town JOAT, Town Odd Night Doctor, 9 Vanilla Townies, Mafia 2-shot Watcher, Mafia Roleblocker, and Mafia Goon.

Mafia flips will only reveal the alignment of the Mafia player, whereas Town flips will reveal the full role of the Town player.
The following roles are non-consecutive (cannot target the same player 2 nights in a row): Town 3-shot Roleblocker and Town Inventor (1x Track, 1x Roleblock).

Each of the Town JOAT's abilities may only be used once throughout the game.

Some alterations may be made to this setup before qualifiers start, but they will be minor if any.

Relevant mechanics info
- Day start.
- Majority elimination will not be enabled during day 1 and is not required at any point for the elimination. Starting on Day 2 and until MYLO/LYLO, majority will be enabled at 12 hours after SoD (in 36/12s and 48/24s) OR at 24 hours after SoD (in 72/24s). MYLO/LYLOs are exceptions, during which majority will be enabled immediately.
- Tied votes will result in a player being eliminated at random from among the tied players.
- No outside communication. I.e. you may not contact the other players outside of the thread (unless you are Mafia and wish to speak with your teammates).
- Phase Lengths and Deadlines will be up to the players themselves (I'll organize your representative into a game with deadlines that suit their preferences).
- Thread is locked during Night Phases.
- Votes are automatically locked in at LYLO.
- Mafia share a factional Night Kill, which is a single standard shot for their faction. The mafia faction kill is mandatory.
- Mafia may communicate at any time.
- Each individual player may make a maximum of 125 posts per day phase (this restriction is lifted 1 hour before day end).
- The game will have a host to oversee everything and make sure everyone's following the code of conduct, but otherwise the game is completely automated (automatic votecounts, thread locks and reveals alignments automatically, the bot receives and processes actions, etc.).

3. SEASON 11 TIMELINE

There will be 8 Qualifier Games, and your representative plays in just one of these. They will have start dates ranging from the end of April to mid-June. So in other words, as long as your representative can play sometime during that period, they should be good and I'll make sure they get scheduled into a game that suits their schedule well. I.e. if your rep is busy until June, that isn't a problem.

The Semifinal Games will be played in July/August, and the Finale Game sometime in August/September (whenever we can work out something that suits everyone).

If you want to get in contact with us ASAP, you can reach us on Discord at lissa2 (Lissa#8083) or Arapocalypse (Arapocalypse#0834).

Kind regards,
Lissa

The Werewolf Game / TWG CXVI Host Post-its
August 28, 2023, 04:44:58 PM
As the current game begins to draw to a close, I think it's about time to start thinking about the start of the next game. Please be aware that a requirement for posting your game this time around is that it must fit onto a single standard-sized Post-it note (for legal reasons this is a joke). Games should ideally be balanced for 6-10 players (though games on the larger side should potentially be balanced to allow for fewer players if necessary). Well, get to post-it noting!!!

The Werewolf Game / TWG CXV: Just a Numbers Game
August 17, 2023, 05:52:41 PM
TWG CXV: Just a Numbers Game

To some, it's just another day at the office. To others... every day is a life and death struggle to try and slog through another grueling day at work. But today... something's different. Today, nine people wake up in an empty office, tied to chairs in a circle facing away from all the others. There's one rule to the game: pick a number, any number.

Wolves:
1. Head Honcho: Every night, the Head Honcho picks a number between 0 and 100 by PM'ing the host with their selection. Every night, all the other players PM the host a number between 0 and 100. Whoever's number is closest to the number the Head Honcho picks dies. In case of a tie, all tied players die. People who do not pick a number (including the Head Honcho) have their number randomized.

Humans:
2. Number Cruncher
3. Number Cruncher
4. Number Cruncher
5. Number Cruncher
6. Number Cruncher
7. Number Cruncher
8. Number Cruncher

Third Party:
9. The Phantom Number Swapper: Counts as a Human. Every night, in addition to picking their own number, they select one player. The Phantom Number Swapper picks a NEW number for that person, and if they are human, that is their selected number for wolfing purposes. Wins if someone is wolfed as a result of their shenanigans—either if the person who's number they swapped is wolfed, or if someone else is wolfed because of the number swap—or if they are the last Human alive. Can win with either team.

Host Clarifications:
  • The Phantom Number Swapper's powers can only affect humans.
  • The swapped number that the Phantom Number Swapper picks can potentially be the same number they picked for themself.
  • The Phantom Number Swapper can choose not to use their power each night.
  • The Phantom Number Swapper can win as a result of their own death if they died as the result of swapping the would-be wolfing target's number.
  • The Phantom Number Swapper is informed when they achieve victory. It is not announced publicly.
  • An example of The Phantom Number Swapper's victory: Player A picks 20 as their number. Player B picks 21 as their number. The Swapper swaps Player B's number to 50. The Head Honcho picked 21 as the wolfing number. Player A dies instead of Player B.
  • An example of when The Phantom Number Swapper does NOT achieve victory: Player A and Player B both pick 50 as their number. The Swapper swaps Player A's number to 60. The Head Honcho picked 50 as the wolfing number. Because Player B would have died either way, this does not count as death-by-shenanigans.
  • The number(s) of any killed players will be announced, but the number the Head Honcho picked will not be.
  • The Head Honcho wins whenever there is one or fewer humans remaining.
  • The game does not have cardflips.

The Werewolf Game / Mafia Championship: Season 6
March 30, 2019, 02:20:19 PM
INVITATION TO THE MAFIA CHAMPIONSHIP (SEASON 6)

Ahoy there! :)

I'm very excited to invite your community to participate in Season 6 of the Mafia Championship.

The Mafia Championship is an annual forum-based tournament series that pits representatives from various online Mafia (aka Werewolf) communities against one another as they compete to determine the Internet's greatest forum Mafia player. Each participating community democratically elects one person to represent them and be their "Champion".

The tournament first started back in 2013. Since then, 270+ different communities and 50+ different nationalities have been represented.

It's a super fun event that has created many new friendships and close bonds between communities. I hope that you would be interested in taking part :)

1. DO YOU ACCEPT THE INVITATION?

If your community wishes to participate, please confirm your participation to Thingyman as soon as you can to ensure yourselves a spot. Currently, the plan is to accommodate 187 communities this season (last season featured 170 communities), and if interest is high enough we will expand even further to 204.

If your community agrees to participate, the deadline for selecting your representative is April 26, but the sooner the better.

2. SEASON 6 FORMAT

The tournament structure
  • 187 communities will participate, each sending one representative.
  • QUALIFIERS: 11 Qualifying Games will be played, consisting of 17 players each. I.e. every representative plays in one Qualifying Game. The players themselves vote post-game to determine who is deserving of advancement. 1st place will advance directly to the Finale Game (i.e. 11 of the 17 finalists are found this way), while the 2nd place finishers will advance directly to one of the two Wildcard Games.
  • WILDCARDS: A Jury consisting of finalists from Season 5 will discuss and vote to determine 23 players in total deserving of a second chance. They will play in 2 Wildcard Games along with the aforementioned 2nd place finishers that advanced directly to these games. From each game, three players will advance to the Finale Game based on a post-game player vote, just like in the qualifying phase.
  • THE FINALE: The Finale Game is played. Once it has completed, the players vote to determine who shall receive the title of Season 6 Champion and a winner's certificate signed by Dmitry Davidoff, the creator of mafia.
This year's setup: Mad17
The setup is called Mad17 and features 17 players.

13x Town
4x Mafia

Each of the following 17 roles will be assigned at random to one player in the game without regard for the player's alignment. Each role is restricted to using its action only on the nights listed on the chart.

Relevant mechanics info
- Day start
- Role reveals at death are alignment only. You will not learn a player's exact role when they die.
- Majority is not in effect.
- Votes are automatically locked in at LYLO.
- Mafia factional kills are assigned. They can be tracked, watched, or roleblocked.
- Mafia share a factional Night Kill, which is a single standard shot for their faction.
- Mafia members may perform the faction kill in addition to their regular action at the same time.
- Mafia may communicate at any time.
- Tied votes will result in a player being lynched at random from among the tied players.
- Each individual player may make a maximum of 200 posts per day phase (this restriction is lifted 2 hours before day end).
- The game will have a host to oversee everything and make sure everyone's following the code of conduct, but otherwise the game is completely automated (automatic votecounts, thread locks and reveals roles automatically, the bot receives and processes actions, etc.).

3. SEASON 6 TIMELINE

There will be 11 Qualifying Games, and your representative plays in just one of these. They will have start dates during the months of April, May and June. So in other words, as long as your representative can play sometime during that period, they should be good and I'll make sure they get scheduled into a game that suits their schedule well. I.e. if your rep is busy until June, that isn't a problem.

Wildcard games will be played in July, and the Finale Game sometime in August/September (whenever we can work out something that suits everyone).

If you want to get in contact with me ASAP, you can find me on Discord (Thingyman#6075).

Kind regards,
Thingyman

TWG CVIII: Dude-Man and the Masters of NinSheetMusic

One day, Dudeman found a magic sword just lying around on the ground. He decided to pick it up and hold it up high for everyone to see his new sword. Coincidentally, at the same time he just felt like shouting out the words "BY THE POWER OF NINTENDO!" Doing this triggered a marvelous transformation in Dudeman. He grew a couple inches taller, got a little more muscular, and also felt a lot colder because most of his clothes vanished for some reason. He also got some fabulous secret powers to go along with his new form... he became... DUDE-MAN, THE PROTECTOR OF NINSHEETMUSIC. Among his enemies include the evil King Sammetor, whose sole wish is to pry open the glorious bastion of NSM Forums and seize its power for himself, and his minions. The only people aware of his secret identity as Dude-Man are Olimar-At-Arms and Tob-orko, but Tob-orko hit his head pretty hard this morning getting out of bed and doesn't even remember who he is right now.

Wolves:
1. King Sammetor: Wolf Shaman. Can choose to forgo this power each night in order to be seered green for that night only.
2. Evil-Bot: Using their evil powers of magic and spamming, they can attempt to roleblock a player each night, preventing any actions they have from going through.

Humans:
3. Dude-Man: Each night, he can use his magic sword to find out the color of one player. What? You thought he was going to kill people with it? This is a children's show!
4. Olimar-At-Arms: Each night, he can utilize his mastery of weapons to protect one player other than himself. Still no killing, sorry. Cannot protect the same player twice in a row.

Final Story:
Spoiler
David Bowie: *sniff sniff* Does something smell a bit... rotten to you, Duncan?

But Duncan Jones was out retching on the lawn.

Duncan Jones: I CAN'T TAKE THIS ANY MORE!!!!

From out the window, Bowie caught a glimpse of his son sprinting off into the distance.

David Bowie: Huh, wonder what's up with him.

He got up to get a drink. Just before he got into the kitchen, he felt a couple loose floorboards. He tried hitting them with his foot to put them back into place.

David Bowie: Stupid boards nev...

CRASH! He fell through the floor. The smell that had been spreading throughout the house was suddenly amplified. All around him were dead bodies! Well, two bodies, actually: the bodies of Mikey and Maelstrom had been buried under the floorboards!!!

David Bowie: *retch* WAIT! Wait for meeeee!

**********

Later, elsewhere...

David Bowie: Huff huff. I'm tired of running. This here warehouse looks like a good place to stop and rest, don't you think son?

So the two went inside.

THC: !

Trasdegi: !

They all piled on top of David and Duncan, and pretty soon they had tied both of them up.

Toby: Hahaha, we did it guys. And we didn't even have to leave the building to do it!

THC: So what do we do now?

Player Analysis:
Spoiler
Despite the game thread itself being only 5 pages, there was a ridiculous amount of chat in Discord, especially through private group chats, which I'm guessing would've easily quadrupled the amount of pages the game occupied. Had the two wolves not been caught quickly, it would've been interesting to see how the behind-the-scenes-vs-public activity would have developed.

BrainyLucario gets the With Great Risk Comes... No Reward award for his shenanigans that quickly ousted himself as a wolf.
Maelstrom gets the War-hair, Don't Care award for being The Ghost of Andy Warhol and claiming (leading to one of the wolves being caught) despite the possible risk to himself.
ThatHiddenCharacter gets the It's Not the Side Effects of the Cocaine award because you were the Addict, and also because Noc kept chewing you out in the deadchat for not posting logs which he claims could have solved the game a lot faster... which didn't really change much anyway, to be honest! :P
Dudeman gets the FUG DAVE BOWE award for doing his best under the circumstances.
Trasdegi gets the idk what award to give him, does that make me a bad host award because, um, i'm out of ideas, sorry
Mikey gets the I Knew Everything All Along award for, well, knowing everything... or so he claims. ;)
Davy get the Anti-Manti award because, surprisingly, this game a lot of people seemed to ignore you: the wolves didn't plan on wolfing you and pretty much everyone ignored your (rather logical, IMO) plan to seer the person below you rather than just randomly seering people (which led to multiple people picking the same person to seer).
Toby gets Overall MVP, as promised in deadchat. Although I would describe his early performance as a tad rocky and suspicious-seeming, his reaction test in the chat is one of the most logical and well-thought-out reactions tests I've seen in a while, and the pressure he put on Dudeman helped the game end so quickly.
Olimar12345 gets the We Trust This Guy? award for this post, which, for me as a normal human, would have had my radar buzzing. Yet, somehow, people somehow still trusted him for his seering plan (except Davy, who seered Olimar himself, and THC, who figured out he was the addict).

Game comments/analysis:

Thoughts for improving this format in the future:
- Make both wolves red.
- If there are more players, add another wolf and a human megaseer who always gets the default color results.
- Make Andy Warhol's painting not go through if they're wolfed, giving them incentive to either not betray the wolves, or be more careful about how they claim and who they claim to. Also, force them to paint every color at least once in order to win.

The Werewolf Game / TWG CIII: Seerious Moonlight
April 03, 2018, 05:58:42 PM
TWG CIII: Seerious Moonlight

The year is 200_. Famed musician David Bowie is reminiscing about the Serious Moonlight Tour, which, while not as good as the Isolar II Tour, was still a pretty good tour. Meanwhile, a group of obsessive superfans are plotting to kidnap David Bowie and... well, they don't actually know what they'll do once they have him.

Wolves:
1. David Bowie: Famous musician who is unknowingly at the center of a kidnapping plot. Each night, he may paint one player of his choosing either blue, red, or orange, and seer another player of his choosing.
2. Duncan Jones: Director of Moon and son of David Bowie. While the superfans aren't looking for him particularly, he's still an obstacle to their mission. Can seer one player of his choosing each night.

Humans:
3. David Bowie Fan: Each night, they can choose to seer one player.
4. David Bowie Fan
5. David Bowie Fan
6. David Bowie Fan
7. Newbie: While they're still an obsessive fan of David Bowie, they don't own a copy of Santa Monica '72, so they're looked down upon by the other fans. Is told they're a David Bowie Fan.
8. Addict: Takes inspiration from David Bowie a bit too seriously. When they seer a player, they get a random color result. Is told they're a normal David Bowie Fan.

Third Party:
9. The Ghost of Andy Warhol: Can paint up to three players each night either blue, red, or orange. If they forgo one painting, they get an extra lynching vote. If they forgo another one, they get another vote. If they do not paint anyone, then they are immune to the wolfing for that night. Wins, non-overriding, when all players alive at the end of the game have been painted at least once. Can win when dead.

Cardflips show apparent color.
