Welcome to the 7th NSM Arrangement Contest!

Current Announcements:

Results are up! Congrats to everyone!

Hi there, friendly friends! The theme this time around is:

Take a video game theme, and write one variation for each season.
Example of seasonal variation
[close]

General Guidelines (Please read!)

- Take a track from a video game and write a variation for each season using whatever real instruments you choose. (Theoretically, a person/group of people should be able to pick up the sheets and play your arrangement. If you have questions about instrumentation, please ask!) You are free to vary instrumentation between variations!
- Do not use the original piece as a variation; rather, you will submit a .mus file that contains the four variations that you've created. Each variation will be different from the original track, and the other variations. You may start off with any season, but please follow the chronological order from the season you start with. (For example, autumn-winter-spring-summer)
- Give your arrangement a title and clearly label which section corresponds to which season variation.
- If you are participating, you have one week to PM me your song choice. Try to avoid tracks that already have variations (I won't ban using them, but if you draw too much from the existing variations, you'll lose creativity points; really, you should choose what you feel like you can work best with). Once I approve your song choice, you are free to start!
- PM me a .mus file of your arrangement before the deadline. Other files can be sent, but are not required. After the deadline, the arrangements will be made public and polling and judging will start!

Scoring

Here are the scoring guidelines:
Criteria (15 points): Does each variation represent the season well? Are the variations distinguishable and unique?
Creativity (15 points): How do you expand on the given theme and add your own personal touch?
Preservation (10 points): Is the original theme recognizable in each variation? Be creative, but don't leave the source entirely. Someone who is familiar with the original track should be able to recognize your arrangement.
Orchestration (10 points): How well does the choice of instruments suit each seasonal variation?
Popular Vote (15 points): How does your arrangement fare in the poll conducted after all arrangements are revealed? Exact point numbers will be determined after all entries are in.
Presentation (10 points): How user-friendly is the sheet? This category factors in three components:
Spoiler
Formatting: No need to follow the site guidelines, but please include a title, subtitle (containing original song title and game), composer, arranger, measure numbers, and page numbers. If you have Notepad or are otherwise unable to follow these, just send me a message and I'll help.
Legibility: How clear is it to a performer what to play, and how? There's no need to go overboard on fingerings and the like, as long as it's readable (e.g. no excess of ledger lines).
Playability: Would a reasonably skilled musician/group of musicians be able to perform this? Make it sound nice, but make sure someone would be able to play it too.
[close]
This last category is meant to be easy points - we're just making sure that your sheet looks nice and would be learnable by actual people.
Total of 75 points

Deadlines

- Signup/song choice: January 4
- Arrangement due: February 1 8

The "Fixing the Sheets" Project - Super Mario 64

The "Fixing the Sheets" Project is an organized effort brought to you by the NSM community to bring each and every sheet of music on NinSheetMusic up to the current standard. Some of the target sheets were submitted before any quality standard was required. As a result, some of those sheets are abhorring. In no way does this project forbid replacement submissions from other games/franchises. This is simply a united, organized effort to deal with the substandard sheets one game/category at a time.

This time, we will be focusing on Super Mario 64.
Spoiler
[close]

What you need to know:

- If you begin work on a sheet, post here so I can edit this target post with the updated information. This keeps multiple people from working on the same song at the same time.
- Can't arrange? No problem; critique other sheets that either have not been looked at yet, or have just been revised.
- There is no limit to how many sheets you may work on simultaneously, but before you claim you should make sure you will be able to complete all your claims.
- The same rules for crediting replacements apply here.

Here is the [OST] with official names. You can find more about the OST listing [here].

"When Olimar12345 appointed me to start this project, it was originally supposed to only be a project to fix the sheets we had on the site. But as time went by, Latios212 came along bringing some new inspiration, drive, and progress to the project. It was he who suggested going the extra mile and upgrading this into the full OST project you see before you. So with arrangers going and working hard on new arrangements for missing tracks, we soon had them all. I believe this is a new record for the longest time spent on a completed project to date, as this has been in the works for over 2 years! Thanks to the arrangers and mods for their hard work, dedication, and continued interest and support. And thanks to all you loyal video game pianists who support us and appreciate what we do. Gotta catch 'em all!" ~JDMEK5

Feedback / Personal Arrangement Threads
August 28, 2015, 09:33:08 PM
This has been nagging at me for quite a while, so I may as well try and put it into words.

Personal arrangement threads are dead. Like, really dead. Most of the exchanges are something like the following:
"Hey, here's something."
"Nice."
"I made something else."
(2 weeks later) "I made another something."
(a month later) "Here's another thing."
<very long silence>
<end of topic>

Here are some examples of what I mean, chosen arbitrarily:
Olimar
Bespinben
Tobbeh
TheMarioPianist
InsigTurtle
Yug Guy
Brawler
JDMEK5

I don't know why, but the mentality at times seems to be "everything happens through the submissions board". Oftentimes, the process feels like this:
Spoiler
- Arrange something.
- Submit it.
- Get frustrated that it's not accepted yet.
[close]
Or like this:
Spoiler
- Arrange something.
- Post it on your thread.
- Feel unappreciated because no one comments on it.
[close]
And nowadays, many new users don't even bother creating their own thread and just go straight to the submissions board.
In essence, what I'm trying to say is that all the fun seems to have drained out from arranging and giving feedback. It should be the case that you post something in your thread, no matter how good or bad, complete or incomplete, and people will give you feedback, compliments, and friendly help. But the board is a lonely place where comments are becoming more and more infrequent. Digging through some topics that have been around for at least a few years, you can easily see it wasn't always like this. Obviously I wasn't here way back when, but the arranging/feedbacking community feels emptier than ever these days. I feel like we're stuck in a negative feedback loop of people not feeling like arranging because there are no compliments on their arrangements because there aren't any new arrangements to comment on. The opposite would be people supporting each other through compliments and helpful feedback, which make the arrangers happy and wanting to produce more sheets.

It saddens me that what should be the life of the forums - the real heart of NSM, the focus on the people creating the wonderful arrangements - has been watered down to the process of painstakingly pushing a couple of sheets through the submission system. (Either that, or congratulating yourself in a very lonely way after arranging something new.)

I want to breathe new life into the board. Shift the focus and give arrangers and arrangements the attention they deserve. It saddens me that off-topic threads can generate new pages full of empty conversation in a matter of minutes, but if you post a new arrangement that you're working on, chances are no one will reply to it. There's something to be said about the rampant activity and toxicity present in the off-topic boards compared to activity in arrangement threads. I understand the need for letting off steam or talking about a particular topic, but people join NSM because it's NinSheetMusic, not to ignore the sheets that give the site its name. Obviously I can't force people to give comments on personal arrangements, but I would like to encourage posting on that board. And most of all, I'm looking for ideas to make it fun.

Gonna end with a quote:
Quote from: JDMEK5 on May 12, 2014, 07:53:02 PMLet's get some comments this time around, please guys?

(Did I mention my vast appreciation for the truckloads of sheets that can only be found on people's personal arrangement threads? Seriously. Tons of my favorite sheets aren't even on site.)

THE POKÉMON GOLD/SILVER/CRYSTAL UNOFFICIAL PROJECT

This will be my home base for organizing arrangements and replacements for tracks from the second generation of Pokémon games. I'm not trying to draw attention away from other projects (because those keep us pretty busy already), rather I'm giving myself a place to get organized without monopolizing my arrangement thread. I plan to do as much of it myself as I possibly can, but by all means feel free to contribute if you love this soundtrack as much as I do! :D

Notes:
- I will be using this playlist for reference but track titles will come from disc three of this.
- Templates are here: [MUS] [MUSX]

Help! / What in the world is up with this song
June 23, 2015, 11:41:48 AM
I started arranging this song, and the good news is, the notes are pretty easily discernible and they repeat a lot.

On first glance, the high notes appeared to be random, but in fact they repeat in a rhythm of 21 sixteenth notes (wat). What's stranger is that this is continuously played over the other two voices, which are in 4/4, so everything is misaligned. Furthermore, the 21/16 rhythm is broken by 2-measure gaps every 40 or so seconds. And the melody repeats itself every 30ish seconds, while it takes the lowest voice over a minute to repeat. Not to mention it all sounds the same after a while.

The problem is, I can't for the life of me find where this song starts repeating. Someone either help me find the repeat point, or help me find a way to abbreviate this sheet, because I don't think it should drag on for pages given that there's only a few measures worth of different notes.

Oh yeah, key signature, too.

And the sheet: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/bw4f4g25zama53j/AACfJZV0uSKRYVBuBph6odAea?dl=1

Halp, please. This song is getting to my head.

Help! / Music Theory Resources
June 11, 2015, 05:02:16 PM
I realized I'm sticking around NSM probably forever so I figured I'd better start learning some music theory to help with my own arranging and understanding and providing feedback on other people's arrangements.

So my question is: how do I learn music theory on my own? I need a reliable source I can spend some of my free time on.

Also, preferably a book, because I need to read in bed or something without staring at a screen, but whatever works really.

Feel free to ask me to elaborate more on what I want but the main things I don't know about right now are chords/accidentals/keys/modes.

Forum Games / Pokémon Super Personality Test!
June 03, 2015, 09:04:50 PM
Pokémon Super Personality Test!
This topic will be run similarly to ZeldaFan's Questions topic in that every day or two I will ask a question and you will respond. At the end of the quiz (length TBD) I will reveal what Pokémon you are! Feel free to choose it as your hero in Super PMD or whatever you want. :D

For now, though, please post if you are interested in playing, as I would like to know who will participate, since the quiz works best when you answer many questions. I'll have this up and running as soon as I can!

~Memo~

As you all should know, Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon has been announced. And it seems to again lack a personality quiz that some people (myself included) miss. So I figured, why not make my own? :)

It's probably been a while since you took one (if ever)! So whether you've played PMD or not, I invite you to take part in my own personality quiz for the fun of it! My methodology will work similarly to the personality quizzes in the first two games, in that I will ask you questions and the answers you provide will award you points to a certain nature, and at the end of the quiz the nature with the most points will be matched up to a starter Pokémon. Of course, the answer attributes and Pokémon nature list will be secret.

Question list

Question 1 - Do you sing in the shower?
A - Yes
B - No
C - ...

Question 2 - You're invited to a party, but didn't get the memo for the dress theme! How do you dress?
A - Casual
B - Formal
C - Pokémon onesie

Question 3 - Do you ever accidentally doze off? (ex. in class, while reading/watching a movie, etc.)
A - Yes
B - No

Question 4 - It's your birthday! How do you celebrate?
A - PARTY TIME!!
B - Spend some time chilling with a few friends/family members.
C - Don't tell anyone...

Question 5 - When are you most productive?
A - Morning
B - Afternoon
C - Night
D - Past midnight

Question 6 - Do you feel stressed out a lot?
A - All the time.
B - Sometimes.
C - Only when absolutely necessary!

Question 7 - Do you tend to plan things out in advance?
A - Yes, I have my entire week planned out already.
B - Only if someone invites me.
C - Nope.

Question 8 - You just got a new game from your favorite series! What do you do?
A - Drop everything and play nonstop until you complete it.
B - Just play for a little while each day.
