Help Guides / Basic rhythm grouping in 4/4
January 03, 2019, 06:32:09 PM
Basic rhythm grouping in 4/4  by Latios212

This is a (non-exhaustive) guide to writing out basic rhythms in 4/4. Of course there are always exceptions and complications, but here's what you need to get started!

Notating rhythms is more than just having all your note durations correct. When grouped improperly, they can be difficult to read.

You cannot view this attachment.

The sheet should expose the underlying beat so that the performer can follow along with the beat. To do this, you can break up notes that pass through important beats by breaking them up into tied notes.

Unless the rhythm is very simple, expose beat 3.

If a note duration shorter than a half note (like a quarter note or dotted quarter note) passes through the middle of the measure, split it up. If you have notes tied, divide them up where the measure hits beat 3. Here's an example:

You cannot view this attachment.

Note how the left hand uses an eighth note tied to a quarter note instead of using a dotted quarter note. That way the quarter note falls on beat 3. For the right hand of the second measure, the dyad is split into a half note tied to an eighth note so that the eighth note falls on beat 3. Doing this will allow the performer to easily see where beat 3, the middle of the measure, lies and will make the music easier to count along with. Here's what I mean:

You cannot view this attachment.

If you have sixteenth notes, expose the other beats.

More intricate rhythms are more difficult to follow along with and you can help the performer by splitting up notes that pass through beats 2 and 4 as well. Here's an example:

You cannot view this attachment.    You cannot view this attachment.

Note how it's easy to see all four beats in the left hand because they are grouped separately. And in the right hand, the quarter note is tied to a sixteenth note that falls on beat 4.

This also applies if you have dotted eighth notes. In particular, a (dotted 8th + dotted 8th + 16th) rhythm should split up the middle note into a 16th tied to an 8th.

You cannot view this attachment.

I haven't mentioned rests at all yet, but the same basic principles apply when you have them - show the beat when needed.

That's pretty much it! If anything's unclear, feel free to ask!

Site News / Introducing Help Guides!
January 03, 2019, 06:30:27 PM
Hello everyone,

Something new for today! Introducing Help Guides!

We often have members both new and old asking questions and looking for help - often seeking the same answers that aren't well documented anywhere around here. It's easy for longtime members to forget where they've seen a helpful explanatory post before, or for new members to not know where to find the answer to a question that has been answered in the past.

The plan is to add a section of resources to NSM to give users something to refer to. Help with rhythm grouping? How to find the key signature of a piece? Need to cross-staff notes in Finale? These guides will be written by our members, for our members, to fit our unique needs as a video game sheet music community.

Come check it out! https://www.ninsheetmusic.org/forum/index.php?board=44.0

Help Guides / About Help Guides
January 03, 2019, 06:27:36 PM
A Help Guide is a guide written by one of our forum members that... helps. One could view this new system as an evolution of the outdated NSM Resources. These guides will be written by our members, for our members, to fit our unique needs as a video game piano sheet music community.

Here's how the process will work!

Submission
Write up your guide and post it as a topic here. The original post plus any number of posts below it will serve as the guide. If you have something written up somewhere else on the forums, you can repost it in a new topic here or ask us to move it. Members can comment on the topic, giving feedback to improve the guide, and if necessary we'll work together to edit it to be correct, clear, and concise. (If something posted is irrelevant or unhelpful, we may remove it.)

Maintenance
The topics will always be open to comments, with the guide in the original posts editable by the writer and staff. This way, people can still provide feedback if something was missed, or ask questions if they're confused (so they can get an answer and also help improve the clarity of the guide if it isn't easily understood!).

If needed, later on we will create different sub-boards as categories for our guides (music theory, Finale help, arranging tips and tricks, etc).

Any questions, ask away here!

Project Archive / Super Smash Bros. Update
November 29, 2018, 06:31:07 PM
After a bit of discussion with the staff, trying something new!

With the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate just around the corner, we're planning an update for December 7th consisting of sheets from any official Super Smash Bros. game.

If you would like to contribute your arrangements, you can post them here. However, please note that this is not an arrangement project similar to the ones we've done in the past. Due to time constraints, sheets must be arranged and reviewed by December 7th in order to be included in the update, and we cannot guarantee that everything posted here will be uploaded to the site with the update.

We'll see how this one-week blitz goes and then evaluate if we want to do more updates like these, make changes in the process, or try something entirely different instead. Please bear with us for now~

As always, help reviewing is much appreciated. You can find files HERE for what is currently included.

Site News / Forum board structure
November 28, 2018, 03:56:16 PM
Hi everyone,

Today we shifted around some boards in the forum to organize things in a slightly more logical manner. The main changes include:
- Moving the piano arrangements board (personal arrangement threads) into the NinSheetMusic category - the category deals with things on our main site, and this board contains arrangements that will (ideally) eventually be submitted to the main site.
- Creating a Project Archive board to keep the past projects separate from submission topics.
- Making a performance category to house the three related boards.
- Moving the gaming category to the Other (formerly Off-Topic) category - the Sony/Microsoft/PC boards were hardly being used and taking up space as "main" boards. The Nintendo board along with those three are sub-boards of the General gaming board.
- Other small adjustments.

Any questions or concerns, feel free to ask, nothing is set in stone :3

September 21, 2018, 04:03:01 PM
Hi everyone,

It's no secret that most of our updaters have been pretty preoccupied with school, work, or other stuff lately. However, it would be great if things could still move along around here. So...

I'm excited to announce that Brassman388 and Libera will be joining our updater team! Yeah! Give them a big thanks as they help us churn out ever more updates! ;D

NSM Performance Videos / Announcements
July 29, 2018, 03:05:24 PM
Hi everyone!

We opened this board back in 2015 for the purpose of sharing performance videos that use NinSheetMusic sheets. We posted a couple of updates compiling some performance videos... and then this board was forgotten about somehow as things sometimes happen around here.

There has been quite a bit of interest lately in NSM performances, however, and I think it's a good time as any to get this rolling again. I'll be helping the effort, but also putting braix in charge! Braix has agreed to help compile videos for us.

Details will follow soon. Happy playing~

I'll be posting them here as they are added, and maybe commenting on them if I feel like it. Do feel free to discuss.

Hello all! It's been rather quiet here lately. Here's something to change that! ;)

We decided to split the Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum project up into four smaller updates. This will allow us to showcase each sheet better and make the sheets accessible earlier! Some of these here sheets have already been sitting here for a year or two... including a few sorely needed replacements.

While the first batch is done, there's still a long way to go. As always, any help reviewing would be much appreciated! *wink wink* Until next time!

Project Archive / Discussing submissions on Discord
October 07, 2017, 01:21:48 PM
Hi all, we've got something new for you today!

We, the updaters, have created a Discord server for the purpose of reviewing sheets in real time. This is not meant to replace the submissions board on the forum, but rather to serve as a convenient place to discuss and review arrangements live with arrangers who are interested. It's already fairly common to have a review session via Discord chat, and this can help us get better organized. Reviewing via live chat in the server can also allow other arrangers to give their input in real time, which can lead to helpful discussions.

I would like to point out that this is, for the time being, different from Olimar's "Live Feedback" system he implemented a few years back. We may or may not use voice chat, and video chat has not been rolled out for servers yet, just direct messages. However, there's nothing to stop us from branching off into a screenshare call should it be needed.

But for now, let's try this, and see where this takes us. Come join!

https://discord.gg/x2FkXAP

See you there!

On this day 32 years ago, September 13, 1985, Nintendo released Super Mario Bros. for the Famicom system in Japan, forever changing the world of video games.

Today, we bring you revised sheets not only for music from the original Super Mario Bros., but from all of the Super Mario Bros. games released for the NES/Famicom! We've checked every one of these sheets, made many corrections, and brought them up to the high standards we uphold today. In addition, we've also filled in the rest of the music from these games by adding several new sheets! All arrangements below have been checked/revised keeping the original arranger, except where otherwise noted.
