Help! / Is this type of arrangement okay for the site?
December 03, 2015, 10:13:52 AM
I made an arrangement of the "Water Town" theme from Shantae, but felt that it needed a little something more.
So I added in an arrangement of the similar "Sky" theme from Shantae and the Pirate's Curse (which is based on "Water Town") to give it a bit more variety.

My question is: how does NSM feel about mixing songs from different games? In this case, the songs are nearly identical, but I'd like to check here before submitting it.

Here are links (from my arrangements thread):

I think I fixed it. At any rate, I do think that what I submitted is the best looking version, but I'm still open to suggestions in case I missed something.

Played around with it, but keeping all three voices gets messy quick.

I still think my original version is the cleanest, and I don't feel showing all three voices all of the time is really necessary in this instance. As always, feedback is welcome.

Awesome! Between the two of us we should be able to crack this.

Proud to be featured on the site, especially being so new to things around here!

Don't worry about it! I actually kind of forgot about it myself, with everything I have going on.

Ah, that explains it. I don't use those types of programs myself, but I can understand the utility.
I'm actually talking about the large 10th/11ths in the top staff. Playing those kinds of intervals in one hand is pretty unfeasible for most people, and it looks like the left hand is free to take the lower note in most of those situations.

Good to see someone tackling Metal Gear, I love that soundtrack. I do have a couple suggestions, mostly just for the presentation:

I would strongly recommend modifying the larger chords (10ths and 11ths) so that they don't appear to be played in one hand: for example, moving the lower notes to the bottom staff to be played by the left hand.
I'm curious as to why you chose 3/4 for the metre, listening the song it feels more like 4/4 or similar.
Play around with what accidentals to use, there are places where flats might be more appropriate than sharps.
Finally, there are some general formatting fixes that could help clean the sheet up, but I'll let you and/or a mod work that out; I don't claim to be an expert on NSM's style guide.

Beyond the presentation, the sheet seems pretty accurate note to note. Keep it up!

That...is not actually supposed to be there. It's from an earlier version with different formatting, I thought I had changed it. I'll fix it in just a sec.

On second thought, that might suggest to some players to use an inconvenient fingering. I'll try some things out, let me know your thoughts.

With the new update, I've re-uploaded some of my stages to include checkpoints.

Air Man Stage: A946-0000-00D7-D9B8
Metal Man Stage: 31FD-0000-00D7-D4F1
Wood Man Stage: 47FA-0000-00D7-DDCE
Bubble Man Stage: 517C-0000-00D7-ED49
Crash Man Stage: 1B78-0000-00D8-0C2A

I've been meaning to get to Flash, Heat, and Quick, but it just hasn't happened yet. Hopefully I'll have time for it soon.

I've also made a couple of music-themed levels:
Disk System: AA27-0000-00BF-441F
Totaka's Song: 8C51-0000-00BF-4271

1.) Good suggestion, duly noted.
2.) I disagree. Staggering finger substitution numbers like that traditionally wouldn't be done for a simple dyad like this; normally it would only be used for complicated substitutions (e.g., where three or more fingers would be used for a single key) or instances where there is counterpoint in a single hand. And in those instances, they're often placed on beats that line up with other notes in the hand. Finger substitution is more common in organ repertoire, and my understanding is that piano follows generally the same conventions.
Ultimately, how the player moves their fingers is up to them: they are free to ignore all fingering marks based on their preference, after all (my own tendency in this piece is to go 5-4 then 4-3), so trying to specify the order like this is unnecessary and risks visual confusion. Going back through some of my rep, I noticed that dashes are more common than slurs for marking substitutions, so I've made that adjustment and marked the fingerings as suggestions.
I hope that all makes sense, I have a tendency to ramble on about theory.
And to be fair, most of these are based on conventions rather than hard rules, so each person's experience can vary.

I know there are the same number of voices there, I excluded it because it was the same note as in the bass; for the sake of the performer, it seemed unnecessary. In other words, the harmony in those spots is not the same note as the melody, but a C in unison with the bass voice. Cross-beaming in this instance is unsightly, and while I could include it in the upper staff (in parentheses), again, it seemed unnecessary. But if you would like me to include the lower C harmony in parentheses in the upper staff for voice conservation, I can do that.
