Channel Art
[close]

As followers of my blog will know, I have started my very own YouTube channel for posting video game covers. Yesterday I have posted a performance of my arrangement of "Lanayru Sand Sea" from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. You can see it here -

I wrote a lot in the description about the making of the video, so I won't go into a lot of detail here. As I have said in the description and the blog post, I didn't have a very long time to rehearse because of deadlines, so there are a few pauses in my playing. I hope to re-upload this video with a better performance. I plan to make more of these in the future (not near, just future), so please consider sticking around.

I made a blog in June 2016 for posting art, and I thought it would be a good idea to make a thread on here to bring the pageviews up higher than 0 increase my following and get more critique. As of now I have over 50 posts, including a Ocarina of Time-themed "post-it art" series of over 20. Because of obligations I'm not able to do much besides the post-it art, but occasionally I'll post some art homework when it's not drawing my face or my house or an entry to a major art contest. Expect updates here for every post.

I recently started using LilyPond as an alternate way to write non-NSM sheet music. For those who don't know, LilyPond is a sheet music-writing software that uses a text input akin to a programming language to compile .pdfs and .midis of sheet music. LilyPond is free, open source, and allows detailed customization of music output. I'll put my LilyPond arrangements here and depending on how many people want to talk about LilyPond I or someone else could make another thread. I'll also use the same format as my Transcriptions for Other Instruments thread.

The file types available will be as follows -
 - .ly - used for compiling
 - .mid - LilyPond output
 - .pdf - LilyPond output
 - .txt - copy-paste of .ly file
 - .zip - previous versions of files

Song Title || Game || Instruments || LDA || Completion

The Legendary Hero || The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker || Solo Cello || 60 || 82%
This first arrangement was meant to teach myself about the basics of LilyPond after following a few tutorials. I decided that writing for multiple instruments would likely take much more time and might be confusing as everything looks the same. In addition, I already listened to it to the point that I memorized it NinSheetMusic already has an arrangement on the site which I was able to use when I couldn't listen to it by ear. I started with a draft of the main melody (v.0.# in the .zip) and then went through a few more times adding dynamics, bowing, and fingerings (v1.#). I don't currently have a cello to play so I will have to wait until I get my hands on a school one to see if the fingerings are comfortable and where I should add extra bowing.
Cello.ly.mid.pdf.txt.zip

Molgera || The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker || Cello Sextet || 60 || 80%
This one was largely based off of Maelstrom's arrangement, but I made a few improvements to justify having six cellists. Two cellists (Perc[ussion] 1 - 2) play the same percussive pattern for the entire song instead of a note; this also adds the "chika-chika" in the form of using the fingernails to rapidly hit the cello. The countermelody voices in both sections have been reverted to the original state and the melody in the "bridge" has been continued when Meal cut them off to play the countermelody. I also let the melody cello play an octave higher in the second repeat, but because it goes ridiculously high in some sections I knew I had to bring it down. I put it back when the brass takes the melody in the bridge for now. Note that LilyPond doesn't put percent repeats in the .mid (listen to it and pull the score up to see what I mean) which means that by default the .mids have missing percussion. I replaced the percent repeats with "unfold" repeats in v0.23.1; while it's not the most recent copy it does provide a guideline of what it should sound like. I also need to do dynamic work...
Score.ly.mid.pdf.txt.zip

Faron Woods || The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess || Solo Piano || 75 || 85%
An arrangement of Faron Woods largeley based off of the original. I tried to differ this arrangement from my others by making some original embellishments in the second half. These are mostly dynamic and tempo changes, but I did tweak some of the lines (such as the left hand in m70-73) to make them sound more dramatic. I also wrote a sort of bridge at the end as well as a definitive ending to the piece. The only thing that is missing is more detailed pedal markings; there are some in version 1.9 but because they were only in the beginning I just wrote in a siple "con pedale."

I personally love the soundtrack of Skyward Sword and would love to see more of its music on the site. I have compiled a list of all of the songs from the Expanded Video Game Sountrack and copied them all down. However I have noticed that the song names provided here differ from the ones already on site (my Lanayru Sand Sea arrangement is called "Ancient Lanayru" on the soundtrack, and "Lanayru Sand Sea" is the Sailing the Sand Sea theme!) so I have also put all alternate names of the songs on site along with the soundtrack names, provided that they are different enough. I may / may not go through the entire soundtrack and do the same thing for convenience.

Soon I will separate these more into unclaimed, claimed, arranged, etc. but for now the idea stands.

I have been making some non-piano arrangements and I decided that I should make a thread for them. These are mostly transcriptions of sheets on the site for instruments that I play (cello, ocarina, piano) so I could perform them. Because of the greater amount of comments that I will likely put on these I have decided to use a slightly different format than my personal arrangements thread.

Just an FYI that I have two ocarinas, one alto (A3-F5) and one soprano (Bb4-D6). For most of my arrangements I will usually write specifically for one of those ranges, which may mean that the key might be changed. (21 Sep 2017 - I got a dual chamber C4-C5 / A4-A5 ocarina a while back.)

~- As of now I'm only putting up the full score -~

Song Title || Game || Instruments || LDA || Completion

Dark World || The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past || Soprano Ocarina Duet and Cello Trio || 60 || 85%

Changed the key from C to Bb because my ocarina is tuned for Bb. Ocarina 1 has the melody for the entire song while Ocarina 2 provides harmony and counter-melody. The cellos have the bassline. Put in a small ending which seems lackluster for now but I'll probably edit it later.

Fairy Fountain || The Legend of Zelda series || Soprano Ocarina, Piano, Cello Quartet || 80 || 75%

A piece that starts off with the basic melody (ocarina) and slowly builds on itself, adding the cello and piano counter-melody and bassline. Because of just fitting inside of my ocarina's range the key form Ocarina of Time was able to be preserved.

Used Bloop's arrangement for most of this. Added in a few for strings, like the grace notes in the fourth part and softer harmonies which I thought sounded better.

The Kokiri Legend (possibly working title) || The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time || String Orchestra (w/ optional piano accompaniment) || 25 || 55%

The Kokiri Legend highlights the beginning of Ocarina of Time, replicating the general story arc and music order found in that section of the game. The songs planning to be included are The Great Deku Tree theme, Kokiri Forest, possibly Inside the Great Deku Tree, possibly some battle and boss motifs, and Zelda main theme motifs. Arranging for a string orchestra feels different than getting to choose my instruments, but I have gotten used to it. (It's also strangely rewarding - 10 measures can get you across an entire page. I wonder what concert band full scores look like... ) My original thoughts were to arrange this for my school orchestra, because some of my friends are pushing for a Zelda medley to be played in band. However, seeing as it will likely be over 100 measures long with multiple key and time changes, it will be a challenge.

Dew Shimmers || LittleBIGPlanet 2 || Transcription (2 Glockenspiels, Harp, 2 Percussion Kits, String Section, Bass Guitar) || 20 || 40%

This piece is very nostalgic to me for some reason. I used to play this game when I was younger and it reminds me of childhood. This piece was actually sequenced in-game and this is just me transcribing it into "normal" music notation. Note that the original file was created in MuseScore to accommodate the large amount of staves.

Mechanical Kingdom || Radiant Historia || Classical Orchestra || 75 || 65%

An arrangement of Mechanical Kindgom for a classical orchestra. Expect more detail about it when an update comes. A "classical" orchestra means that the instrumentation was inspired after orchestras in the classical time period, which typically consisted of a string section, woodwind section, and limited brass and percussion. I added a snare and bass drum to add the percussion pattern that happens in the song. I decided to add more layers to the basic melody as well as a new ending.

ザ・ワードⅡ (The Word II) || Special Sound Series Vol. 2 || Transcription (Drum Kit, Chimes, Electone, String Synth) || 65 || 70%
A transcription of Shigeo Sekito's ザ・ワードⅡ with a focus on accuracy. I'm not completely sure whether I chose the right instruments; I know that the electone (a type of electronic organ) was used in the album, but everything else was inferred. There currently is no drum part because I have no experience with writing for drums. Because organ music is very particular to how long notes last, the main version omits any grace notes and writes these out in time. I also made a version with grace notes in both melody lines for ease of reading.

Copy-Pastable Notation for NotePad Users
Version 1.4

|                 |
V Download V

Using MuseScore I have created a .mus file containing many notations that are impossible to notate directly in Finale NotePad. Using this file you can easily copy-paste special notation into your arrangement without the need for someone with a higher Finale product.

If anyone has any requests I could do my best to add them in, and anyone that has a higher Finale product that would like to add anything in are free to do so!

Version 1.4 contains -
- accurate and consistent names
 - 8 types of grace notes, from 1 to 4 before/after the note
 - 12 different types of noteheads as well as "small notes"
 - 1-4-lined tremolo, one and two note
 - sharpandahalf, etc.
 - sforzando-like notations
 - "plus sign" augmentation (left hand pizz for strings, not sure for other instruments)
 - all of the mordents
 - lifts, pauses, and glissandos
 - functional (!) repeat signs and first-third ending markers
 - finer and broader note durations, from 128th (semihemidemisemiquaver) up to a quadruple whole note (long) (quadruple note is rendered same as double note but works as intended)
 - redirections (D.C./D.S al Fine/Coda) both with and without functional repeats
 - finicky, but usable clef changes
 - many types of cross-staff beaming
 - almost all notation available in all 4 layers (except for articulations reproducible after one instance is copy-pasted in)

* Lkj's Degree of Abandonment. 0 means that I am actively working on it every chance I get and 100 means I will never touch whatever monstrosity I created ever again.
Use this if you want to get the most recent copy available, especially with low LDAs. I will likely only update .pdfs and .mids once in a while. For now anything that goes up here will have all three file formats up to date.
