October 31, 2014, 11:29:15 AM
Happy Halloween, viewers of NinSheetMusic! Little may you have known, here at NSM we have been preparing for this holiday by arranging video game tunes in a spooky style! We even had a contest in which arrangers competed to create the best Halloween-themed arrangements they could make! A hearty congratulations goes out to our arranger, Bloop, who came in first place with this arrangement (based on "Toad Town" from Paper Mario) entitled "Toad Tomb". It can be enjoyed via the links below:

Arrangement Contests / Arrangement Contest No. 4
September 15, 2014, 11:33:04 AM
Welcome back to the fourth round of the Arrangement Contest! The theme this time around is:

Arrange any video game song to sound spooky/scary.

Take any song from any video game, excluding pieces that are already spooky or scary-sounding, and take a horror approach to arranging it. Make it sound like something you would hear on or around Halloween! This of course means, songs like Lavender town, Submerged Castle, anything from Luigi's Mansion, and music blatantly from horror games aren't allowed. You can use any instruments you may like. In case you are in doubt whether your selected piece is valid, PM me and ask.

Your score will be based on the following criteria:
1) Orchestration: Do the instruments serve the music? A simple copy/paste would result in a low score, while a dynamic orchestration would yield something higher.
2) Preservation: does the arrangement make it clear what the original was while meeting the criteria? If the arrangement only makes a single reference to the original while it does something else entirely, then it'll get a low score.
3) Creativity: does the arrangement go beyond the criteria? If it only does the basic change, low score.
4) Criteria: does the arrangement meet the criteria for the challenge? If no, low score; barely, middle; totally, high.
5) Formatting: make sure your piece has the following information: a title, a subtitle(including the original song title and the game it's from), the the composers name, and the arrangers name(either your NSM alias or real name). You get more points if you arrangement had other standard things such as measure numbers, dynamics, etc.(if such things apply to your piece). This category should result in easy points.
6) Popular vote: each entry gets a corresponding score from everyone who votes, an average from the votes for the piece out of all the votes.

Alright! Here are the entrants:

This will also prevent people from arranging the same song twice, if the issue rises(in which case, first come first serve). PM me your complete submission when you finish.

Tentative dates are as follows:

September 24th will be the deadline for signing up/choosing a song.
October 24th will be the deadline for submitting your piece.

1) Make a SINGLE post with your three pieces. Any other posts will be deleted. (We have a general questions topic) Discussions about arrangements should take place in individual threads.

3) Put separate links for all your files (MUS, Midi, and PDF) for each sheet.
4) Before posting, be sure that your sheets are in tip-top shape (i.e. formatted to perfection, well arranged, etc.). This is NOT the place to ask updaters to fix things for you. This is.

Spoiler
After discussing it among the staff, duet arrangements will be allowed to be submitted without a solo counterpart. However, we will encourage arrangers to submit solos with their duet arrangements by allowing them to add the counterpart to their submission in addition to the set amount. For example, if the submissions thread said

Quote from: Olimar12345 on May 05, 2014, 10:49:47 AMPost a maximum of 3 Submissions.

and you wanted to submit a duet, you could also submit the solo version (in addition to your two other pieces), putting you at a total of four pieces uploaded.

Happy arranging

Alright, in this guide I'm going to try to tackle several things about making a proper replacement arrangement, and address the sensitive topic of who to credit in a replacement arrangement.

Firstly, what is a replacement arrangement?
Replacement Arrangement - Noun
Pronunciation: [ri-PLEYS-muhnt] [uh-REYNJ-muhnt]
Definition: an arrangement meant to replace an existing arrangement.

Okay, so I think we all get that part. But why replace an arrangement already on the site? Don't we have updaters who check for quality before they upload the files? Currently, yes. Have we always, though? No. Some older files on our site date back to the time before we had a set standard for how they should look, or the accuracy of the music.

There are two main reasons to replace an existing file on the site:

1) The hosted file is not in compliance with our current set of standards. This includes presentation details like formatting, as well as correctness - note accuracy, enharmonic spellings, etc.

2) Someone has submitted a better version of an arrangement than the hosted file. For instance - an arrangement that better captures the feel of the source material and is more natural to play.

So lets say that you make the decision to replace an already-hosted arrangement. Who do you give the arrangement credit to? Based on you're approach to creating the replacement arrangement, the following three scenarios should clearly explain who to put in the "Arrangement by _______" spot of the file.

The Three Types of Replacement Arrangements

1) A Revised Arrangement
In this method, you have taken the hosted arrangement and cleaned it up. You've updated the formatting to comply with the current standards, and fixed any mistakes such as incorrect notes or the wrong key signature.

Who gets the credit? The original arranger.
Why? The logic behind it is that you didn't make any important musical or presentation decisions, you've just cleaned up a messy file. Thanks! :D

2) A Revisited Arrangement
In this method, you have taken the hosted arrangement, cleaned it up, and did a bit more. Say you rearranged that whole bridge section, fixed some rhythms, or wrote out a new bass line for that left hand part. Now the arrangement looks nicer AND is more accurate to the original! In short, you've made it easier to read AND added to the arrangement musically.

2022 addendum: Please note that in order to submit a replacement of this type, you must have the consent of the original arranger.

Who gets the credit? The original arranger, but underneath that you should add an "Edited by ______" section.
Why? Since you have edited the music itself, it should be known. Though, you still did not arrange the tune, so you are technically not the "arranger." If you are not sure where you fall between the revised and revisited arrangements, ask an updater.

3) A Challenge Arrangement
In this method, you have decided to start from scratch. You have created a new file and transcribed/arranged everything without any relation to the hosted file. Basically, you are challenging the current file for the hosting privileges, based on the idea that your arrangement has more to offer.

Who gets the credit? You do.
Why? If you arranged it, it's yours, so put your name on it.

Well, that's about all I can think of right now. If you have any questions about the above material, or had a question about something that I didn't cover, feel free to ask the updaters.

Help! / The "Who Composed This?" Topic
October 26, 2013, 01:04:44 PM
I swear we had one, but I can't find it. Basically, use this topic to help find composer credentials for an arrangement rather than posting a new topic for each inquiry.

Tips for finding the composer info of a game:
-Find a wiki of the game. They usually list the game's composer(s) there.

As for the topic, I actually need some help: Does anyone know who composed certain songs in Pokemon X and Y? Everywhere I check just gives me the same four names for the whole ost. I was hoping to try to narrow it down. (Hopefully JDMEK5 or Slow sees this :P )

Nintendo / Olimar sells stuff too!
June 08, 2013, 10:33:20 AM
Hey guys, I was recently given a free Nintendo Game Cube. Thing is, I don't need it-I still have my game cube AND Wii, so here's my offer:

For free. That's right, just as long as it goes to a good home. :J However, whomever decides to take it must pay for the shipping, $10.  :/

The bundle includes the following:
-one black Game Cube
-one game boy player attachment
-one power cable

Sadly it is missing the video/audio cable, but if you still have an N64 or SNES, they all use the same one. If anyone is interested, hit me up via PM and we'll go from there.
