Hey I'm a long-time pianist who's let my skills get a bit rusty, so I want to get back in to practicing. I also want to learn to arrange but my ear... needs work. And with ninsheetmusic switching to MuseScore (something I'd hope would happen for a long time), I'd figure I'd give it a shot.

So I figured I'd try and get started by starting with this song from A Short Hike since it's a simple piano solo:

I think I have the melody 90% right or so. But the harmony... it's so simple and I have no clue. I put x-head notes for my best guesses but they are DEFINITELY not right. Would someone be willing to help me out? I'd appreciate any tips on how I can figure out what notes go on the left hand. I know some basic theory (for example, I am pretty sure the opening measures outline a I - iv - I progression) but not enough to find all of these notes.

Hey! I'm new as well, but I might be able to help.

The method that I use when trying to pick out inner voices (neither bass nor melody) is to find a note you're confident is present and try to hum along to that note. Most of the time it does what you're expecting, especially in a simple piece like this.

I would try to get either the melody or the bass solid first. I think the bass would go down to bass clef notes starting in measure 17.

I'll make a mock up and get back to you soon. Best of luck OP.

PS: I hear this piece in 6/8 rather than 3/4. I've never played A Short Hike so is it needs to be in 3/4 for it to work contextually lmk.

Update: Here my mock up: [PDF] - [XML]

Thanks! Your notes are helpful and I'll work on trying to figure out those inner voices. It might take me a while, but I'll post back here when I figure it out.

You are so right. When I re-listened, it's definitely 6/4. Never would have caught that on my own. Thanks!

OK here is my updated score:

This is much better; thanks so much for your help, SlimmerMaple! There are definitely still some incorrect harmonies, but it's much closer.
