Quote from: Gamer4250 on March 17, 2009, 07:52:04 AMThe solution is simple: delete the arrangements.  Plagiarism is plagiarism.  You can't just say it's kinda ok and leave it there.

Hmm no... remove the plagarism, remove the site. ALOT of the sheets in this site are simply straight MIDI rips and otherwise, which sound rubbish, those should simply be fixed with credit, not removed. If you remove the sheets, then we lose a hell of a lot of our sheets.

Probably not for long.

What are the alternatives? I mean, look:

 - We can have a less-than-perfect arrangement, fully knowing what the perfect one should be like. (bad idea)
 - We can pretend that it's ours, after all, a perfect arrangement would be exactly like the official one. (bad idea)
 - We can just delete the song, and deliberately not have it on site (bad idea)
 - We can credit the composers of the theme, and host their arrangements here, telling everyone that these are the official sheets and not ours.
 - We can simply link to a place where the original sheets can be found legally.

Yes, I'm still around from time to time. For quicker response, you can reach me by PM, or drop by Smogon to say hi. I go by "Codraroll" there, because of a bet.

Im not worried about the midi rips, for they are already fan arranged. BUT, the sheets are another thing, i like caboroll's idea, give them the credit, and we'll be fine.

No.  You can't just give somebody credit if you steal their work.  You have to remove everything that's plagiarised.  This stuff is illegal.

that's why you rewrite everything.

KefkaticFanatic

Exactly.  What I'm saying is that you MUST remove everything that has been plagiarised.  Feel free to actually make your own genuine arrangement, but you can't just rip it from a midi or other sheet and call it your own.

Alright, cool, and thanks for you input.

I say we don't remove every sheet there is, we put up a list of plagurised (why does it have to be such a complicated word??) arrangements and then get people to replace them with their own as we delete them. If no-one comes up to replace within, say, two weeks? A month? Then we delete anyway, but keep it on the list so people can arrange if they want.
How's that?

Trouble is, we should have something telling visitors why the sheets aren't there and where they can be found. I think we shouldn't completely ignore them. And as for arranging our own, we would have to make them less than perfect, even though we know what they ideally should look like.

After all, all music on NSM is subjected by copyright. And out of the, say, thousand non-plagiarised sheets here, I bet at least one or two are exactly identical to the official ones (if any), merely because the arrangements are "perfect". Should these also be deleted?

I think we have hit bit of an issue here. If we were to go perfectly legal, we would have to obtain permission for every sheet on site.

Look, no site is gonna be 100% legal.
So what? Do the public care?
Are we gonna have Nintendo rush into your house, klaxons beeping, then drag you away to a small island off the coast of Germany?
Probably not.

^You know, on the grand scale of things, Norway is a small island off the coast of Germany.  ;D

Well, anyways, we should at least mention the songs here, sheets or not.

Cobra:  What was plagiarised was a specialised piano solo, which strays from the original piece to make it optimised for the piano.  It's clearly not somebody just being perfect.
