After watching all three parts I've determined that it was not popular in Japan at all so the producers gave it to the American people and was like "do whatever whatever you want with it" and so they basically rewrote it into that.

GOD THIS IS AWESOME. And I just Wikipedia'd it. Jub's assumption is basically correct. The American writers replaced the original serious Japanese script with this comedic and more awesome one. Apparently a ton of the lines in the english version were just ad-libbed by the voice actors.
