I use a program called MuseScore for composition, and it doesn't support (or make) .mus files. Can I still use it?

you can export a midi file and someone else can import the midi into finale.

If the base is any higher than a middle C everything gets messy. :S

I meant that.
Usually. Most MID's I look at that have high bass' make them jump up to the treble.

NinSheetMusic requires a .mus and a .mid file for submission.

Can a midi file be transferred into a .mus file in Finale somehow? I've never used it.

Yes it can. Make a MIDI and anybody can change that into a MUS for you.

finale takes midi data and converts it to notation. sometimes it's clean and other times it's a garbled mess.

I'm not sure of anything else.

XML? I didn't know that... but now I do. What a valuable piece of information.
