There's a difference between free-to-start games and free games with in-game purchases. Free-to-start games are like demos on steroids. You get a partial game, but can't play the full game without purchases. Free games with in-game purchases are full games that have the option to buy in-game items or currency to help speed things up if you don't like waiting. In short, Team Kirby Clash Deluxe is a free game with in-game purchases, not a free-to-start game. I hate free-to-start games, too.

There's a pretty big difference. One is a low-down, dirty way to milk people of their money. The other is a not-as-cheap way to get money, but at least isn't necessary to be able to play the whole game.

All free games nowadays have in-game purchases. You're gonna have to let that go if you ever want to enjoy games like Team Kirby Clash Deluxe.

My actual gaming has been reduced to smartphone games and Magic: The Gathering (and the very occasional online game on a webpage). I've been getting exclusively free-to-play games with in-game purchases for at least the past year, and I haven't paid a cent for any of them. (Ah, beating Peggle Blast without spending anything on it...)

You can argue that the in-game purchase model is manipulative, but I've once read that such games actually make the majority of their money from the scant few who sink thousands of dollars into such games, and the majority of players make 1 or fewer purchase (involving money) per game.

Ignoring magic (which deserves every penny of my wallet) and league(which doesn't, but my friends do), my original point stands.  Freemium games aren't necessarily manipulative, but a majority of them are meant to significantly hinder gameplay experience unless you do purchase stuff.  And if you're willing to make purchases, you make lots of purchases.  Like those people you mentioned who spend thousands of dollars on a free game.  Let's use clash of clans as an example.  Probably one of the top 5 or 10 most successful games with this model.  The core gameplay of clash of clans is definitely fun.  Build an army and attack with it, keep your village safe.  At some point being able to keep up with the level you've reached becomes boring.  You have to wait days or even a week to upgrade an object that took days or weeks to save enough money for.  That's why most people you know who used to play clash don't anymore.  It's just not fun after a time.  Some games with the freemium model aren't fun right off the bat.  And you can argue about the ethics of it all day long but at some point you have to admit time and money are both resources and one is more valuable than the other.  THAT'S how they trap you.  Not manipulation.  Hey you wanna play this game?  Well, play is a bit of a strong word, but you get to open the app sometimes.
Most people I know would rather pay the money upfront for a guaranteed purchase than start free and pay to increase fun.
Incidentally, this is my beef with paid DLC.  Most of the time it's either not worth purchasing (smash) or a really freaking good deal (mk8) but there are some stinkers...

Edit: oops bleheheheehe text wall
Also I should mention that if you want to play comp smash you're forced to buy the DLC because bayonetta and corrin are top tier so you need to know how to play them

That's not what I meant. I meant, "If you want to enjoy a free game, you have to get over the fact that it offers purchasable content".

So even if you get all the heroic mission apples, you'll still have needed 10143 more...

So by harvesting efficiently, you can, in theory, get 3 apples twice a day, so it'll take about 1691 days to 100% the game without paying anything.

Being patient doesn't seem possible with that amount of time...
