Instead of attacking the Pokemon that are probably going to lose anyways (i.e. Poliwag) when you are healing your favorite starter, you should attack the Pokemon that has just as a likely chance of winning as your own starter, because they will be more of a threat when it comes closer to the end.
It's better to begin weakening the real competition now in order to prevent them from winning later.
