Welcome to NSM, Clanker!

That's a good first arrangement you have there. Just some thoughts on it:

Again, despite all these comments (which are really just gripes about the way we do things) this a good introductory arrangement and I look forward to seeing more from you in the future!

Yep, what WiiMan said is all true! Especially the formatting. Except, you don't have to include the right hand. There are other one-handed arrangements on this site so it's not unprecedented. Ultimately it's up to you as the arranger to decide how the piece should be written out.

Anyway, here are a few of my observations:
The BPM should be at about 75. This website (http://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm) is really nice for figuring out the tempo for a song. You can just tap any key to the beat and it'll calculate the speed.

Also, from the source I compared your arrangement with, the last 3 measures (22-24) were a bit off. Check about 1:05 to 1:20 on this video (http://rpgmusic.org/banjo-kazooie/down-the-loggo-toilet) to see what I mean. (I also pulled the tempo from this version too) If you used a different source for this arrangement though, then you can just ignore this since it wouldn't really apply!

But, criticisms aside, I really enjoyed your arrangement, and more Banjo Kazooie music is always welcome by me! With just a few small tweaks, it'll easily fit right alongside the rest of the sheets on this site. Thanks for joining and please keep arranging!

Quote from: Sekter77 on February 11, 2011, 08:50:38 PMYou don't have to include the right hand. There are other one-handed arrangements on this site so it's not unprecedented.

Most of those particular arrangements were directly ripped from midi files; pieces written for piano, in my opinion, should include both staves for the sake of continuity. In this case, I just think it'd be easier and sound smoother playing those octaves with two hands where possible.

However, as Sekter said:

Quote from: Sekter77 on February 11, 2011, 08:50:38 PMUltimately it's up to you as the arranger to decide how the piece should be written out.

...provided they meet the guidelines set and the updaters don't get picky about it. :P

OK I've done some changes. I don't want to use the right hand beause to me it just seems to much trouble than it's worth. I couldn't really hear what was wrong with bars 22-23 (if there's still a problem with them please be more speasefic)but I've changed 24 to suit the song better, but it goes over the bar line and I've no idea how to fix it and if anyone knows I'd really appreciate someone telling me. Here are the modified versions
Midi: http://www.mediafire.com/?xhk17j9sh21qxfj
Mus: http://www.mediafire.com/?l22hd0w8z5bl61w
I still know that I'll have to work on it I just don't know where or how.

P.S Thank you for your constructive critism. I already know I'm going to love arranging for NSM!

I went ahead and finished the rest of it as long as that's ok with you anyway. (Here's the mus (http://www.mediafire.com/?mgpnqzu5pkxre47))

Here's what I changed:
The last measure you needed help on should be in triplets (which are really hard to work with in Finale). That's why it wouldn't fit earlier. And the only other measure that needed fixing was 22 (The rhythm needed changed and I added a couple notes).

Also, I changed the File Information, font for said info, and I added a Tempo Mark. This forum page (http://www.ninsheetm.us/smf/index.php?topic=2223.30) should explain how to do all that stuff. If you ever need help any other time, don't hesitate to ask! The arrangers around here are very knowledgeable so someone will be able to help you out.

Whenever you're satisfied with your arrangement, just post it in the submission thread. If it's accepted it'll end up on the main site. Thanks for your enthusiasm about being here!

Thanks so much! I don't know what I would've done without you! I've tidied things up (Given the right notes Stacato signs and dynamics) and here they are:
Mus http://www.mediafire.com/?5ps799if6qgmelb
Midi http://www.mediafire.com/?h73a3ow0wax87ex

Thanks for everyone for being so nice, yet telling me of my problems! Just a quick question though Is there a better version of Finale or something that I can download and really put more detail in the first arrangement rather than people posting it four times because really I could've done all of that in the first go.

Post by: Sekter77 on April 05, 2011, 05:27:00 PM
Canary Mary Race does have a fair few problems. The first thing is that you should probably cut the tempo in half and also halve the note durations (i.e. make quarter notes eighth notes, eighth notes should be sixteenth notes, etc.). Also, I think the timing on the left hand is off starying at around Measure 47. There's a fair few wrong notes too. The runs at the beginning for example.

I can't find an original version of the Mad Monster Mansion song for comparison, but from what I remember, there are a few errors. Most notably, the timing seems off here too. Beat 3 of Measure 9 should start the next measure. Those sixteenth notes sound off, but that could just be me remembering incorrectly.
Also, that song sounds a lot like Creepy Castle from Donkey Kong 64.

OMG I will have to look at this because I love this song. It's the one that plays at spots like after you convince your partner in the future to go after Grovyle...or after Grovyle is pulled into the future again...if I remember correctly.

Everyone makes mistakes, that makes the human perfect, doesn't it? Now that the arrangement is complete, I'm so bold and comment one thing: When you use ffff, the piano player might do anything to destroy the piano, I prefer "tutta forza" (with all power). ;) Be sure to add a dynamic marking after the forward repeat sign, or the piano player will play tutta forza all the way through the repeat.

It's too empty. I know the other notes are drums, but you can kind of put them to music. It doesn't sound right without bass in it. Try again.

I'd recommend removing some of the ties in the bass. I'd remove the ties in measures 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, and maybe 12-15.
It feels much slower in comparison to the song.

I still think Bowser's Castle sounds too empty. Could you try adding a rhythm of some sort into the left hand, possibly based off of the drum beats in the actual soundtrack?

I just listened to Bowser's Castle. It's really good now! Just a couple things...First of all, you've uploaded the wrong midi. It's the original. Second of all, those alternating intervals in measures 12-17 should be sixteenth notes, not triplets.

Truly, I agree with you. That was one of your better arrangements Clanker  :)  It must have been a pain finding out the rhythms for this song XD

Now down to the nitty-gritty: it seems you're a little uncertain at a few parts in the song, such as measure 26, as if you were unsure of the timing of the notes within that measure. Also, this is just a gut feeling, but I may perhaps re-write your Treasure Town in 12/8 time, just to see what happens, considering that Pokémon Square (which shares many similarities to Treasure Town) was in that time signature. But truly, great job Clanker! A lot better than Palkia's Onslaught, no offense XD

Good thing I don't work with Finale XD Then again, that's also to my disadvantage on this particular site. It's a double-edged sword not using Finale here (unless of course one is comfortable with the program, which I'M NOT). Like I was saying earlier though, the rhythmic problems may be arising from not using the right time signature, so it may be good to experiment to with different ones.

EDIT: Try using 6/4 and tell me what happens  ;)

Oooh I've been looking forward to this Clanker! A quick fix: on measure 1, there's supposed to be a whole rest, not a half rest, on the right hand at the beginning of the measure. The way it is right makes it sound like the right hand is coming in way too early. Great job though!

Sorry to say, but the rhythm is still wrong on measures 1 and 2. The right hand begins playing after 4 and 1/4 beats of rests on both those measures. I know it's annoying when you think you fixed something and it's still not right, so I understand.

It is fixed  :D

The arrangement is almost there:
(1.) You may want to see if you can clean up the look of measures 3 and 4. Maybe stretch out the distance between the bottom and top staves to allow room for the dynamics so that they don't touch the staves.
(2.) In those some measures, I can barely see the natural marking on the note cluster somewhere between the fourth and fifth beat. This still falls in the same vein as the previous suggestion - to tidy up those measures.
(3.) The onset of the tremolos in measures 5-8 need to be sooner. Maybe shorten the D on beat 4 to a sixteenth note (semi-quaver) so you can do that.

Perfect!!! Sinister Woods is just right now!

Here's a quick idea of what I think the Great Canyon solo should look like, so maybe you could incorporate some of it into the version you just posted (which, by the way Clanker, is EXCELLENT - fantastic job on it).

[GBA/DS] Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red/Blue Rescue Team
Great Canyon (solo [quick outline]):
[MIDI] (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/35209091/PMD%20Great%20Canyon%20%28solo%29.mid) [PDF] (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/35209091/PMD%20Great%20Canyon%20%28solo%29.pdf) [SIB] (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/35209091/PMD%20Great%20Canyon%20%28solo%29.sib)

I also finished my arrangement of "Parting" from PMD 1 if you want to check that out  ;)
Title: Re: Clanker37 Arrangements
Post by: Clanker37 on August 06, 2011, 10:16:18 PM
I do like the idea of having those two-note chords in bars 12 and 15 in the one hand; it would make things easier. The rest of your version is very complicated with the massive chords and all, which I prefer not to put in my arrangements. I will add the two-note chords at bars 12 and 15, though. It is a very good solo!

Funny thing is, I didn't even know you were working on Great Canyon because you said "I'm not sure I want to do Great Canyon or Credits now." So by the time I finished my outline, I noticed you had posted an .mus, and I was like "Oh woah!" I also find it funny how we both our ideas for the solo were so homogenious (just look at measures 5-12, they look almost identical).

What you first need are triplets to get rid of all those dotted eights, it would be pretty annoying for the piano player to count them out, if you you use triplets the player knows that the eights are to be played equally.

Really great job! Thanks a bunch  ;)  I felt making a solo would be difficult because I would have to somehow find a way to fit 4 distinct musical parts into 2-hand format, but I see you did a nice job of picking out the essential parts. I have a tough time doing that because I feel like if I leave out a part that was in the original I'm doing some kind of injustice to the song.

I had to check out the Thomas arrangement's and see if I remembered any. Henry's Sad Theme sounds familiar.
But the two arrangements have some formatting issues. On both of them, text overlaps in the title. The format sizes are incorrect as well. The font isn't correct either. The copyright info on Henry's Sad Theme has the symbol twice instead of once while Duck's Theme only has the copyright symbol and no other data. I would revisit the Formatting Guidelines to fix these issues. Your arrangements would look better then and be possible to submit to the site.
Musically speaking, Henry's Sad Theme is fine. Duck's Theme should be in 6/8. The Gb used throughout the piece should be respelled as F# because of the linear function as well as the harmonic function. That F# spelling clarifies that the line moves towards that G as well as the fact that the F# would tonicize a G (a Gb would not).
I figure I should listen and critique the Credits as well while I'm here (I guess I say "as well" a lot). Same issues with formatting as discussed above. It would be pretty safe to say the opening is in the key of G major. I would swap to 12/8 at measure 9. To get the quavers to bar together, I would be sure to state the key signature the correct way in Finale. You want this to be thought of as 4 beat divided into 3 notes. This is a really easy swap to do from 4/4 to 12/8. In the Time Signature changing box, keep the top note the same, showing you want the same number of beats in a bar, then scroll the bottom note until it aligns with 12/8. It should just be a simple click to the right to enlarge the time signature. Depends on what version you're using I guess.
In measure 43, use quarter rests and dotted quarter rests (crotchet and dotted crotchet, I believe). It's fine because you're in a complex time signature at this point. Redirect the stems of your second layer in bar 47 so they don't overlap (or write the 1st layer as the second and vice versa). Shows the proper voice leading.
I really enjoyed the pieces. Hope my long-winded-ness doesn't discourage you from arranging. Keep it up!

Woot! Thanks for the soloization Clanker  :D

Oh, and pumpy_heart, it may be important for you to know that Clanker's "Credits" arrangement is a solo reduction of my duet of the same song, so if you want to look at the problems in the arranging more intently, I suggest looking at my duet arrangement. Thanks for specifying that the beginning was in G major too! However, I would have to disagree with changing the key signature to 12/8 at measure 9, since there are eighth notes being played.

Awww, thanks Clanker  ;D  One little thing - when I originally wrote up the Primal Dialga duet, I wrote in cut-time to make the sheet easier to read given the very fast tempo. However, now that I look back at it, it seems that writing it in common time would actually improve the clarity of the rhythms and, better yet, reduce the ridiculous number of measures in the arrangement by half. Do you think the same? I ask because I'm thinking of re-writing the duet in common time when I make the .mus of it (as well as the solo of it).

Most of you probably know, but in 30 days time, it will be the 6th of Feb. 'Why is this important?' I here you ask. Well as most of of you probably don't know (those who do I'm very afraid of) I joined NSM on the 6th of Feb posting my first, crappy arrangement of 'Down Loggo the Toilet' from Banjo-Kazooie. In celebration of my one year anniversary of NSM membership, I have arranged a song which is very dear to me (And has been the cause of many requests from other members). So it give me great pleasure to present me arrangement of...

Banjoland is just awesome (For obvious reasons). It is the best Banjo pieces ever(IMO) and I love it to death. Should any part of this song seem similar to the arrangement that you have done, please tell me so that I can change it. I did not copy any other arrangement that wasn't my own, but I have learned some of the pieces in Banjoland using the NSM arrangements, so it is very likely that parts might be similar.

Oh yeah, and sorry Deku for stealing your piece.  :-\

More arrangements, yay! :D

Nutty Acres - Challenge is a fun piece. Though I really hate arperggios, I think they went well in Nutty Acres. With a hint of Witchyworld, I really love this piece :P

Toby's Theme is AWESOME. I love the bass that has the same rythm that the Isle 'O Hags and Grunty's Lair has that I just love. Toby's Theme really tells us of Toby's kind nature and it fits him perfectly: An old tram that can still be really useful.

Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts
Nutty Acres Challenge

This sounds pretty good.

There are some parts where the right hand and left play the same note such as in measure 4. You may consider removing the chords and leaving the descending bass pattern.

The glissandos from G to E may be a bit unnecessary. Have you considered using grace notes or 16th notes?

At measure 20 and 24, I think the Ab and Bb could be G# and A# instead.

The part at 31 is impossible. I would recommend keeping the bass chord pattern in the left hand and maybe 8vb the E G Db.

54-57's dotted quarter should really be split into a quarter tied to an eighth so that beat 2 and 3 are clearly seen.

Formatting:

The composer and arranger credits shouldn't be so clustered. I would recommend putting them in the same text box.
Don't forget the site url. One copyright symbol is good enough.

Banjoland and LogBox are named 'Beating Banjoland' and 'Inside the LogBox' in the offical soundtrack, but are also refered to as 'Banjoland (Night)' and 'LogBox 720' on some YouTube videos and other fan references. The songs for Nuts & Bolts on the site already are named after the fan names rather than the offical soundtrack so I just named them as the fan names, but people who ues the offical soundtrack rather than YouTube may be confused. What should they be named after?

Oh, I named Click Clock Wood under Autumn because your America's 'Fall' does not exsit in Australia and I blatantly refuse to use it >:I But Wiiman may now cross it off the request list :D

These latest bunch are my best yet! They all follow the strict guidelines set out by NSM! (I hope!) They're even in ZIP files! :D The quality has greatly improved, also. Especially when you check against my earlier stuff like 'Palkia's Onslaught'

May I ask where?

The chords of the right hand. From measure 6. I'm not exactly sure if those are the correct chords.
Oh, and I checked the original, and those chords are one octave higher.

I know I'm a bit behind the times  :P but on your isle o hags replacement I'm pretty sure it should be a Bb in the RH in bar 84 (I think it's 84, I'm on my phone...). Other than that it looks pretty good

Maybe someone who actually knows about piano can double check this, but I think that bit at bar 69 (childish giggle) is pretty much unplayable.

Yep, it just needs some tidying up.

I'd consider moving the grace notes in bars 31 & 63 because the upper part is kinda like the new melody so it sounds better if ornaments etc belong to the top, unless of course you've got a particular reason for doing so.

And you can use dotted crotchet rests on the beat in bars 12, 27, 59, 88, 100. Just as a consistency thing, as I noticed you used them in other places too.

Sorry Clanker! I did a version of this too... I didn't know you'd already done it. :( It's pleasing to see that we've got some rather similar parts in there, though. The other arrangement of AZ scared me in it's differences... XDD

Excellent work with the Isle 'O Hags, Clanker! For some strange reason, it reminds me of Dusk Forest... XD It's been a while since  I've looked at other people's arrangements, so I apologise... I'll have a look at your other ones too and let you know how they are as well! :D Oh yeah, your Route 4 arrangement is great too, by the by. :)

Question: Why DO you arrange? What makes you want to arrange? Think hard on that and let me know. :D

Thanks! Maybe it's that they both are in 6/8 and use a Crotchet, Quaver rhythm in their base lines? Maybe?

Anyway, I arrange because it's the only way I can express my feelings of greatness towards a piece. If a piece doesn't do it, then I won't arrange it. Simples.

I can't help but get the feeeling like I'm somehow completing your homework or something. I'm on to you fingerz...

Yeah, they're in similar time signatures (or in the same, I can't remember)... XD

I agree too! I always get an urge to arrange a damn-good piece. It feels so good to do it too! :D

Hahahaha! Noooo, this isn't for any homework task, I'm just doing it to see what motivates people to arrange. It's nice to see that we all do it for different reasons. :)

Here's a fun song. This arrangement has spanned about a year since I left it and then picked it up again. Is it noticeable where I started from this time? Anyways, enjoy.

Here's a replacement of one of my earlier arrangements. I went a bit mad with it because I could. But let's all just casually ignore the fact that I haven't posted in this thread for a year.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS

Rainbow Road Series Medley (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/57307902/Rainbow%20Road%20Series%20Medley.zip)

So here's an arrangement, probably my last for the year (Making a grand total of three!) At least I tripled my number of arrangements from last year... Unless some serious procrastination occurs, I doubt I will have time to quadruple that number.

I'm still a little rusty on the arranging front, so please excuse some foolish errors. I did the best I could for a song which is mostly percussion driven. You'd think with seven people working on it, they'd invest in a more creative bass line. Apparently not.
