(For what this is about, see this link)

And yet another thread, this time for the forum itself. The forum seems to work mostly fine so this probably isn't as critical as the others. But still, there's always room for improvement. Obviously with the site update the request and submission forums will see some changes, but are there other changes you'd like made as well?

Would a custom theme improve the overall feel of the forum or is the current one adequate?

(For what this is about, see this link)

This is the thread for the look and layout of the new site. See the link above for how this works.

In addition to adding new functionality to the site, I'd also like to modernize the look a bit. I haven't started with designing the actual layout yet (as I wasn't exactly happy with the ones I made earlier) so all ideas are welcome.

I quite like the light blue color scheme, so I'm quite likely using it in the upcoming version as well. Or would you rather see some other color scheme? Perhaps even the old red/black we had in the early days of NSM? (does anyone even remember that?)

We also need some kind of actual logo, to use on for example our Facebook page. Currently we're just cropping the site banner. I'd also like to get away from just using the Nintendo logo as the base and would rather prefer something original.

I guess most of you are aware of the infamous NSM website upgrade which I've (supposedly) been working on for a few years now. But in case you have no idea what I'm talking about, let me clarify:

The NSM website itself is seriously outdated and needs some kind of upgrade, both in the server side of things (e.g. database improvements) and just features in general. As I'm the guy responsible for doing that in addition to being unable to finish any kind of large projects, the said updates haven't really been coming along. Once I'm done with studies this semester, I should be able to give this yet another try.

However, before I rush headfirst into the coding aspects of this, I should really plan the whole thing. In addition, I'd like to hear your opinions (as crowdsourcing seems to be the popular thing nowadays) on what kind of features you'd like to see on the site. I'll be creating a couple of topics for different areas of planning. What I'd like you to do is to post some new ideas and also discuss ideas which have already been posted.

This topic is for the actual features and functionality of the site, meaning ideas about the actual functionality of the site. I'll post some ideas below to get things started.
  • The big one: Improved upload system. Removing the need for the submission topics where people have to post their arrangements. Instead they can use an upload form to add their arrangements to the queue, where uploaders can easily approve or reject them.
  • Same for requests. The ability for arrangers to fulfill a request by submitting an arrangement. Maybe even an option for "being worked on" to let the user who made the request / other arrangers know that the request is being fulfilled.
  • Sheet archive improvements. This is also something I'd like to see improved. At least something like browsing by series/console/arranger. Also search function, obviously. The ability to rate sheets would also be a possibility.
  • To power all the previous features: Forum integration. Allowing you to use your forum account on the main site as well, to access these features.
  • One feature I've been thinking about is the ability to link your YouTube videos of you playing to the arrangements. This would give people viewing the sheet another way to listen to it while also letting people promote their YouTube videos here.
I guess those are the main features I've been thinking of so far. Many of them also need to be refined further, for example the sheet archive structure is an important one.

But with that, let's get planning!

Site News / 9 years of NinSheetMusic
April 11, 2013, 05:56:14 AM
It's that time of the year when I realize that another year has passed from NinSheetMusic's previous anniversary. This time the actual number of years is nine. Not quite a decade but getting rather close.

As I started writing this post, it really got me thinking. Nine years. That's a heck of a long time. NinSheetMusic has been around for about 40 % of my life. For me it's also the website I've been visiting for the longest time (the fact that I own and run it might or might not have something to do with that). If only I had known what me googling for Nintendo sheet music back in 2004 would result in.

It's been fun to watch NinSheetMusic grow these past years. I won't bore you with statistics but there's been steady growth in visitors, sheets on the site and fans on Facebook. Of course as there's no profit in this so I don't really need to worry about the number of visitors. Nevertheless, it makes me glad that more and more people enjoy what we're doing. It feels good to help people play music from the games they love.

The next time I'll be writing an anniversary post like this is for the 10th anniversary. That's quite a milestone. Guess I should plan something special.. ahem, let's not get ahead of ourselves just yet.

So with that, I'd like to thank everyone who's been visiting the site, be it for a month or for nine years. These have been a fun nine years and we'll see what the future holds.

Site News / Update...rs!
November 09, 2012, 01:04:01 PM
Hey everyone!
Looks like the front page has been rather...quiet lately. First of all, I'd like to apologize for the lack of updates. People have been too busy with their lives to actually update the site, as the whole updating process can be quite time-consuming.

But fear not, things are about to change. Please welcome our new members of the updating team - shadowkirby and Olimar12345! These fine gentlemen are going to start updating shortly and you should see plenty of new sheets on the site soon.

Here's to future updates!

Site News / NinSheetMusic's 8th Anniversary!
April 11, 2012, 03:05:58 AM
Hello all!
As of today, April 11th 2012, NinSheetMusic is 8 years old! That's a quite long time for a website. And what was I 8 years ago? 13, almost 14.

In those 8 years NSM has come a long way from G-Han's personal freewebs-based sheet music site, (VGSM as it was called in its earliest stages) with over 2000 sheets in the database, over 1000 unique visits a day and over 1000 fans on Facebook (a milestone passed a few days ago)

The past 8 years have been pretty good, but let's hope the following years are even better. We will continue to provide quality sheet music for our visitors and a website redesign is on its way. Yes, this is the part where the older members groan and are like "But Jamaha, you've been promising that for years!" (Maybe not years, but probably quite close) And yes, I know. So true to myself, I make no promises, but if I don't get it done in the following months I'll hate myself.

Anyways, we hope you've enjoyed visiting NSM and continue to do so. See you around!

~JaMaHa

Oh and happy birthday to my sister as well, because apparently "NSM's 8th anniversary" is a wrong answer when asked if I know what day is it today.

Just revealed the 8th and last profession. From what it seems, this game is gonna be awesome. Fixing many MMO flaws and not even having a subscription fee.

Anyone else looking forward to this game?

Site News / Google+
November 17, 2011, 10:44:54 AM
Hey all, sorry not much has been going on lately. But fear not, some exciting news coming later this year. (or in the beginning of the next) Stay tuned.

In the meantime, I made NinSheetMusic a Google+ page. There's not much going on, but the Google+'ers among us might want to check it out. Link in the sidebar.

Yeah, that's a huge zero right there.

Anyways, last year on July 12th I started to serve my conscription in the Finnish Army. Now, 362 days later, on July 8th, I have no more days left to serve and thus I am finished with the service.

What this means is A) Yaaay, freedom! B) I'll stop neglecting NSM and work on some new features. So after a slight resting period I'll start to work on some coding. The original intent was to get the NSM revision, dubbed NSM362, done during the service, but it didn't quite work out. Now that I have two month of free time before continuing my studies - expect some progress.

It's good to be back,

Piano Arrangements / Missing a file? Ask for it here.
December 05, 2010, 01:21:45 PM
To avoid multiple people working on same sheets, let's gather the whole conversion project here.

Simply make a post to claim any group of sheets you're PDFizing and also edit your post to add the links to the PDFs. Only make that one post and keep other chat to other threads (for example the one in Feedback) to make the PDF lists easily found to ease the work on the updaters.

READY, SET, PDF!

-----------

Please, please, PLEASE zip your PDFs before you post them!  It will save us (and you) a ton of time downloading (and uploading)!

File info Template:

Author: Arranger's name as appears on the sheet
Title: Name of song as appears on the SITE, not the file name - it looks untidy
Subject: FULL game name
Keywords: "NinSheetMusic" (without the quotation marks obviously).

Site News / NinSheetMusic now accepts PDF!
December 05, 2010, 05:19:51 AM
Hello everyone! So what's JaMaHa been up to in addition to observing artillery fire, firing RPGs and just being plain awesome? Well working to improve NSM, obviously!

As of today, NinSheetMusic provides additional means of downloading our sheets - PDF. So for those who can't be bothered with downloading and installing Finale Reader, fear not, your wishes have been granted.

Now the hastiest of you have already rushed to the sheetmusic section armed with nothing but your trusty Adobe Reader and noticed "There are no PDFs in here, JaMaHa, you filthy liar." Now, just because the option of submitting a PDF exists, it doesn't mean there are any PDFs submitted yet. However, upcoming updates will be taking advantage of the inclusion of PDFs and the conversion project for the current sheets is being planned.

By the way: 215!

Hi. Managed to find an open wlan we can use during our free time.

Anyways, been a few days now, getting used to all this. The heat is horrible but otherwise this isn't too bad. Still 8 days until my first vacation.

Also, assault rifles suck for left-handed users.

See ya in a while.

Site News / Create a banner for NSM -contest!
April 25, 2010, 05:02:56 AM
Greetings,
As some of you might have noticed, the banner is kinda outdated and should have been replaced ages ago but...whoops.

Anyway, now's your chance to help NSM look a bit better, as we're having a banner-making contest. So, now for the details!

Who?
You.

What?
A new banner for NSM. Instructions:
* Contains the name "NinSheetMusic"
* No reference to the domain for obvious reasons
* 200px tall and 1-1000px wide
* Fades to color #B1C6D6 on the right side for browser windows wider than the banner, this also allows the width to be anything less than 1000px
* PNG format preferable

When?
The deadline is the next Sunday, May 2nd

How?
Return your submissions via email to jarimatti@gmail.com or PM to JaMaHa

Why?
There are no other rewards but getting to see your banner on the page. So in a sense this is more like a call for aid than a contest.

May 31, 2009, 09:02:44 AM
After a long period of hanging out at a subdomain of Drshnaps.com, NSM has finally obtained an actual domain.

From now on we are found at WWW.NINSHEETM.US so please update your bookmarks accordingly.

Updates shall also recontinue shortly.

While free conversation is allowed, especially in the off-topic forum, the recent posts have turned into random chatter.

Every morning I come to read the forums and go through the, like, 7(?) topics we have. The X topic, Y topic etc. etc. and have no clue whatsoever, what's going on.

So please, can we keep some sense in the posts, thank you.
(Also, enough with the small text)
