Quote from: MaestroUGC on February 20, 2012, 11:44:12 AMYeah, let's go with the ID's. Live judgring would be too much of a hassle because we all have different schedules, plus time zones and just trying to find a date where we can chat long enough to go over the pieces, at best we can do acouple in a single sitting, but most likely we would need to get together a few times to get through all 8 arrangements. If we do them on our own, we get the added bonus of personal impression as oppossed to a group concensus.
...I thought of that. Okay. Yeah, it would be a big hassle and stuff. XP

Quote from: Cobraroll on February 20, 2012, 11:31:24 AMGlad to see so many people want to participate.

I've heard concerns over "copyright" claims, though: without a name on the sheet, anyone, for instance somebody off-site, can grab it and say they made it. I've thought about this and devised some sort of solution, but I want to hear your ideas before pushing it through.

My idea was to give out an ID number to all the participants. This number would only be known by the participant and myself, and be put in the arranger's field in the submission. This doesn't prevent anybody from changing the field to display their name, but would provide some backing for claims of origin.

Any thoughts/ideas? Is this a problem at all? If yes, can we do something better about it? Please let me know if you think so.
Sounds like a good idea. I wouldn't want my work to get stolen. Random number generator anyone? XD

I can't imagine anyone who would do that! That's just... stupid. Don't steal other people's work. I'm not even in this for the prize. Heck, I don't care if I win. It's just a really fun and good experience.

You know what we should do? Live judging! Like get a private chatroom with the judgrors and the competitors, mute the competitors, have the judges talk it over live, and the reach a verdict. Time zones would be an issue, though. =P

Like with great skill? If someone asked you the typical intonation problems with each instrument, such as the Alto Sax being sharp in the upper register, could you give an accurate answer to all the questions?

Really? Maybe they think they don't have any business with all this new-fangled NSM stuff and just leave it alone and go back to the day where people wrote their scores with ink. Just a thought.

Music / Who Plays What? [TOO LAZY TO UPDATE :D]
February 19, 2012, 10:22:28 PM
I've been making some orchestral arrangements lately and was thinking about proofreading. Who will proofread my music? I thought to the members of our site. So I would like to make an inventory of who plays what instrument on this website. The inventory will be located in this post, so reply to this post with the instrument(s) you play. If your instrument is not on the list, but not obscure, then include it as well.

Maybe have a "Beginner's" section and a "Virtuoso" section for those who want easy songs. Probably wouldn't be huge, but a thought.

I agree. Rehearsal marks would be nice, but not as necessary as measure numbers.

Quote from: K-NiGhT on February 19, 2012, 08:26:38 PMThank you for taking a look at my sheet! Yeah, i've been meaning to fix that. But when i try to it messes up the rest of the song and i get frustrated and ragequit.

Well, I've been looking for a good arrangement of DQIX:Overture for AGES and I finally found a good one. I guess you could just manually put it in over again. Btw, K-NiGhT, the sixteenth notes you have in the opening fanfare that play sort of as a background to the long, sustained, high notes, should be 16th triplets, not straight notes.

The time signature thing should be cracked down on. There are a LOT of arrangements out there that have this flaw. I think I saw one in a Super Mario Galaxy: Battlerock Galaxy or something.

I was looking at some arrangements lately and realized that some of them are not using time signature correctly. For example, on k-Night's arrangement of the DQ9 Overture, there should be a pickup bar of 1 beat before the fast section comes it, if you can thing of it. That pickup bar is not included, which makes reading very difficult. As a rule to arrangements, I think that time signature should be used with more emphasis. Time signatures do not merely provide an open field in which to put notes, but they define strong beats as well.

I've done a lot of medleys, and from personal experience, using one song at a time is sufficient. You might want to just "quote" melodies from the different songs. If you're really good at arranging, key changing, and harmony *cough* like me *cough*, you could put like a 1 measure fragment of each melody in a finale at the end and build from there.
