So Kirby Battle Royale already came out. Storyline spoilers inside:
Spoiler
  • King Dedede's got a Kirby Printer, which spews out (probably inferior) different-coloured duplicates of Kirby with copy abilities already equipped, but possibly without the capability to eject copy abilities and absorb new ones. Guess this printer doesn't make Waddle Dees for some reason.
  • Kind of like King Dedede getting a magic fire hammer in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Bandana Waddle Dee's got a magic water parasol.
  • Kirby's gotta slog through multiple Leagues' worth of competitors.
  • Meta Knight managed to get to the Gold League before figuring he wants a real challenge and commits competitive suicide by challenging Kirby (and Bandana Waddle Dee). He's accompanied by Axe Knight for the tournament. Meta Knight says he joined the tournament to test his strength and possibly get stronger.
  • King Dedede seemingly wants to continue his rivalry with Kirby, so he's the last competitor before Kirby can win cake. The king gets pretty salty and angry to boot.
  • King Dedede eventually pilots a Robo Bonkers-like mech called Dededestroyer Z. Kirby still defeats him, though. Bandana Waddle Dee does help out by pushing in a sparkly cannon, though.
  • Kirby actually does accept the initial cake as a prize instead of asking for a bigger cake.
  • Meta Knight reports earlier that "These (Kirby) copies are pathetic." This might actually have been foreshadowing--when the Kirby Printer explodes after Kirby blows up Dededestroyer Z, all the Kirby copies it created explode soon afterwards.

Turns out that the playable character roster consists of versions of Kirby with different copy abilities, a random Waddle Dee with a magic water parasol, Meta Knight, and King Dedede. Now for a tier list to sort itself out....

Here are the answers to my latest quiz:

#1
"The Arena"/"Arena Battle", from Kirby's Return to Dream Land, used as a boss rush battle theme
Timestamp: 0:03

A.k.a. the Kirby GCN trailer theme, this is the song that started it all. ...Kirby's Return to Dream Land-wise, that is.

Loads of other songs in Kirby's Return to Dream Land's OST reuse motives from this song, so I expected you to figure out which game this was from based on that.

#2
"The Schemer (Tinker Knight Battle)", from Shovel Knight, used as one of Tinker Knight's boss themes
Timestamp: 0:02

So I hear you can OHKO Tinker Knight with a certain item. No wonder this theme is so short.

Tinker Knight's boss theme when he hops into his tank, on the other hand...now that's a doozy.

#3
"A Shot of Crisis", from Chrono Trigger

I like this song. I did use the NinSheetMusic transcription for this melody, although the presence of some of those eighth notes is actually debatable.

#4
"Still More Fighting"/"Those Who Fight Further"/"Fight On!", from Final Fantasy VII, used as a boss theme
Timestamp: 0:00

I used a particularly tricky section of this song in my first Guess-That-Song Quiz, so I owed you all an easier excerpt.

I'd say the very start of this song is an easier excerpt.

#5
"The World Adventure", from Sonic Unleashed, used as the title theme
Timestamp: 0:13

This sounds a ton like John Williams music, which is why I like it.

Based on all the other neat Sonic Unleashed songs I've listened to in Guess-That-Song Quiz answer panels, I really should just listen to that game's entire OST.

#6
"Otherworld"/"Jecht Battle", from Final Fantasy X, used as a boss theme
Timestamp: 0:00

"Jecht's Theme" got marked incorrect, as it does not contain this melody.

I was thinking of using a different Final Fantasy X boss theme for this quiz, but I found that this melody was the easiest to transcribe by fairly far. Sorry, I know that stuff like Seymour's boss theme is better known than this.

#7
"Distant Traveler"/"Magolor Race EX", from Kirby's Dream Collection, used as the Magolor Race EX theme
Timestamp: 0:00

This song gets remixed in Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe, so I expected people to be deceptively familiar with this song that's otherwise from a more obscure Kirby game.

Yeah, guess what, this remixes themes associated with Magolor.

#8
"Boss Battle"/"Battle 2", from Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Timestamp: 0:18

I'm not quite convinced that Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is a true Final Fantasy game, but its music rocks.

Does this song really play back in this B-C quarter-tone minor in-game? An OST of music that's entirely in quarter-tone keys would be really sweet....

#9
"Hivory Towers", from Yooka-Laylee, used as a stage theme
Timestamp: 0:05

This is the only Yooka-Laylee song I've heard of. And even then, it was only by name. So yeah, I transcribed this cold, but with substantial help from the NinSheetMusic version this time.

...I guess the Yooka-Laylee people got Grant Kirkhope to compose good old Banjo-Kazooie-style music.

#10
"Dragon Roost Island", from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, used as a stage theme
Timestamp: 1:02

Back when our family got this game, I didn't really get how Link's mission was to rescue his sister, not Zelda. There are too many Links with too many missions, I swear.

...Then we all got stuck in fetch quests and never reached the first boss. I think we did reach this island, though!

Nintendo / Re: Pokémon Ultra Sun & Pokémon Ultra Moon
November 03, 2017, 12:30:12 PM
Quote from: SlowPokemon on November 03, 2017, 05:13:46 AMIt probably has to do with Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon being an "alternate world" — likely the world that the original Ruby and Sapphire took place in rather than the one Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire took place in. If you remember, the Delta Episode has some mildly meta explanations and includes references to another version of Hoenn, implied to be the original Ruby and Sapphire.
I've read on other forums that the Team Rainbow Rocket villains aren't necessarily from the parallel universes of the previous games. Some even say that the Team Rainbow Rocket villains are from parallel universes where they won (though many other posters disagree with them and find the "recruited in medias res" theory to be better).

It's even possible that every single Team Rainbow Rocket villain was pulled from a different parallel universe (so none of them come from the same universe).

Due to a previously unforeseen flight to Victoria, BC, I'll need to move the deadline for my Guess-That-Song Quiz earlier to Friday, Nov. 3 at 10:00 PM MDT (a.k.a. Saturday, Nov. 4 5:00 AM forum default time).

In case you didn't see my quiz on the last page, here it is:
[PDF] | [MIDI] | [MUS] | [MSCZ]

The MUS is readable in Finale, including Finale Notepad. The MSCZ is readable in Musescore. All other files are based on the original MSCZ, not the MUS--this explains why the PDF doesn't look like the MUS.
The MUS may display and/or play back bugged. The MSCZ, MIDI, and PDF shouldn't.
With that being said, #6 contains scoops that don't play back.

This quiz shouldn't be too difficult, but don't feel too bad if you only get one or two! PM away!

You can PM answers to me until Friday, Nov. 3 at 10:00 PM MDT (a.k.a. Saturday, Nov. 4 5:00 AM forum default time). I will not count any submissions made after that time, as I'll be too busy tallying results.
Results will be posted shortly afterwards.

Some guidelines for answering, how the melodies are transcribed, and what counts as a correct answer--oh yeah, and some hints right off the bat:
  • You may submit YouTube links/videos instead of game name-song name/best known use pairs.
  • All tempos are approximate.
  • Like last time, I will mark unambiguous songs with the right melody in the right key as correct. If your guess has the right melody in the wrong key, I will mark it as incorrect but PM back that you were close. You can freely guess again until the deadline.
  • I may not have gotten octave voicings correct in this quiz. If you think you've got the right song but it's off by an octave or two in parts, just guess that song anyway.
  • I may not have gotten articulations correct in this quiz.
  • As before, I PM hints! If you can't figure out the song at all, but you guess the series the melody is from and/or give a YouTube link to a similar-sounding piece, I'll PM back about whether you're on the right track.
  • The more obscure the song, the more generous the hints get.
  • Hey, neat! This time, all melodies are equally likely to be melodically and rhythmically accurate!
  • ...Well, except that #8's song may actually be playing in B-C quarter-tone minor instead of B minor.
  • ...And the trill in #2 has too few notes in it.
  • The only series with more than one song in this quiz are Kirby and Final Fantasy. None of the other songs share a series.
  • No two consecutive melodies are from the same series.
  • Heck, no two melodies are from the same game!
  • Yes, there is exactly one Zelda song in this quiz!
  • Sadly, the following series do not appear in this quiz: Mario, Pokemon, Undertale, Pikmin

Our plan for Halloween was to be a dark house and not entertain any trick-or-treaters. Trying to eat fruits in the near dark, with only the TV for light, was rather inconvenient.

I then heard my sister took her toddler son out trick-or-treating.

Quote from: Dekkadeci on October 30, 2017, 11:29:13 AMEvery time I read about Pikmin games, it seems that Mother Nature is the antagonist, not whoever this Emperor Bulblax is.
Mother Nature doesn't make a very compelling antagonist, IMO, but it/she is a recognizable one.
Quote from: blueflower999 on October 30, 2017, 11:37:06 AMCan you please stop

I won't complain about any the other antagonists still on this list (besides Teemo, Emperor Bulblax, and Balrog, who I've already complained about)--I've heard about all the others before this thread came up.

...although be thankful I read up the origin of the character in your signature, because that's how I found Dr. Weil. Yeah, he arguably does make scarier robots than Dr. Wily--Omega's following really dire footsteps.
