Quote from: Kricketune54 on January 16, 2022, 10:11:37 AMBeen meaning to drop some comments on this one!  Thanks again for checking out my sub.
You're welcome! (I didn't do it expecting to be repaid, y'know!) :P Regardless, I appreciate you taking some time to give me some feedback! :)

Quote from: Kricketune54 on January 16, 2022, 10:11:37 AM- I'm not really picking up a difference in note length between RH m2 beat 3 and m4 beat 3 so those could be the same (quarter, quarter rest, or half note, though I think I prefer the first option)
Fair point. I believe I had it as a quarter note originally, iirc, but I changed it to a half note to provide parallel structure with the dotted quarter note at m. 6, b. 3. However, the quarter note works well too and pairs with the quarter note in m. 4, b. 3. Anyway, I've switched it for a straight quarter note.

Quote from: Kricketune54 on January 16, 2022, 10:11:37 AM- Also based off of how it sounds, I think you could add a slur on RH m10 beat 4 to the quarter note on beat 1 of m11, and do that for each time this phrase appears in this piece.
Great suggestion! I think it works quite well with everything surrounding it. Done!

Quote from: Kricketune54 on January 16, 2022, 10:11:37 AMThat's all I really got though, this is a really nice sounding piece, well translated to piano, and that was fun to noodle around with on my own (something I don't usually do for stuff in subs lol)
You and me both. :P Glad you had some fun giving feedback on another person's sub, though! It was certainly an odd feeling when I did it on your sub (being my first time and all), but I have no doubt it gets easier over time and it's something I want to do more of over the next few months. And thanks again for the feedback! I've updated the submission files accordingly, so if you have any more feedback, do let me know! :D

Ooh! I like this piece! I like pieces that are nice and grand like this and it manages to capture that grandeur very succinctly! Plus it's Pokémon, so there's some bonus points from me. :P

Here's some feedback from me:
- The metronome mark could bother to be a little lower. It looks okay where it is, but I think a bit lower looks better.
- I'm not completely sure, but I feel like the piece could actually be in B major, not E major. Granted, switching keys doesn't have that much of an impact because of how short the piece is, but I feel like B major fits better, just given the chord movements. I could be wrong, though.
- The 8th note rest in the LH at m. 2, beat 1, I feel is too close to the tie. This could either be resolved by moving the rest lower or by flipping the ties of the tied whole note in m. 1-2. I'm not sure which is more correct, but either way, the rest and the tie seem too close together.
- In response to this:
Quote from: Kricketune54 on January 02, 2022, 10:03:39 AM-On this same thread when playing m3 in the RH, I did find myself playing the D#, restriking, and holding it out beyond beat 2.  Should this instead be quarter, dotted half as a bottom layer, and then the G# and C# in the top?
Spoiler
[close]
I feel like this is better than what is currently written because, personally, I'm confused when I see a whole note and then immediately have to restrike the note, without doing anything in-between. That said, you could also go for something like this:

Now, I'm not an expert on this by any measure (pun intended), so take this suggestion with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, I still feel like writing it where you restrike and hold the second time is better than having the whole-note, quarter-note that's currently written.
- In m. 5, I feel that the eighth-note rests in the RH should be moved down a bit and the eighth-note rests in the LH should be moved up a bit. The rest in the RH b. 2.5 is especially too close to the F# that's above it, so it should be moved down to give the F# some space (then move the b. 4.5 rest to pair with the first). In the LH, whilst I feel the rests are okay where they are, I think they look better if they are moved up a staff line.
- The Fn in the LH m. 5, b. 3 should be an E#, which makes the chord a fully-fledged C# major chord and pairs with the E# already in the RH.
- For the strings in m. 7 RH, it sounds to me like they are slurred, so you could bother to add a slur or two here. If I had to add them, I would put one from the D (beat 1) to the A (beat 4) and another from the D (beat 4.25) to the staccato-ed B in beat 1 of m. 8, however, you do you.
- The tenuto-staccato articulation in m. 8, b. 3.5 looks strange to me. I think it's because the staccato and the tenuto are hugging that top staff line. I did some testing and MuseScore places this in the same relative position as the one over the E in beat 4, but I did some reading and it seems like the more correct thing is to have the staccato vertically centered between its staff lines and the tenuto for its staff lines (just imagining a phantom staff line above it), so it looks something like this:

Now, I'm not sure entirely how to do this in Finale without just having 2 separate articulations (and even then, the tenuto isn't as thick as it should be). Regardless, I feel that either option looks better than what is currently there.
- I feel like you should add some extra space between the staves for the 2nd system (m.5-8). I would add enough so the crescendo and the forte are nice and vertically centered. I think it looks really nice when you do this.
- Speaking of crescendos, the hairpins in measures 6, 9, and 10 all terminate right against the barline. This looks off to me, so you should give a little space between the end of the hairpin and the barline (this may mess up the MIDI, unfortunately).
- As much as I enjoy the big crescendo in m. 9 (especially with the tremolos), when I listen to the piece, I don't really hear this. To me, it sounds like a constant forte, with the rolling timpani and the chord progression creating a "crescendo"-like effect. But, that's just me.
- The measure widths should be adjusted for measures 9-12. I think measures 9 and 10 look quite squished and I don't think the tied whole notes in m. 10-11 need all that space.
- Finally, I hear the timpani go down to a B for the last chord and I don't really hear any D#'s, so I think the last chord works well as a B-F#-B, which is a nice callback to the open E-B-E chord in the first measure. However, if you disagree with me, that's totally fine -- either way sounds fine to me!

That's all from me for now! This is my first time giving feedback, so I'm not quite sure what to say, how to phrase it, or if I'm just up in the night. Nevertheless, I hope you find some of this helpful. :)

Piano Arrangements / Re: Arrangement Highlights of 2021
December 27, 2021, 09:47:21 PM
After two crazy semesters of school (but there's only one semester left!) and a summer filled with trying to understand how MuseScore -> MusicXML -> Finale works (see here for the fruits of my studies), I didn't have a lot of time to submit sheets. However, I did manage to crank out a few and complete the 12 Days of Sheetsmas too! :D So, let's see what my top 5 favorites were...

#5

Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling - "Blessed Golden Lands"
This was my submission for the Colors project and it has the honor of being the first Bug Fables sheet on the site! It was certainly a bit more complex than I normally would've like, which resulted in quite a bit of figuring stuff out, but it was chosen out of necessity as I was having a hard time trying to find another suitable candidate for the project (that was possible to complete in a short time frame by an amateur). Nevertheless, I don't regret choosing as I really enjoyed arranging it; I learned a lot working on it. And, as it is one my more favorite songs from the OST, I'm happy it's now got a sheet on the site and Bug Fables is represented! :)

Mario Party - "Magma Mountain" (Replacement)
Story time! This one and I go back to when I first discovered the site. When I first discovered the site, I was impressed with almost every sheet I found! I printed off many of them and set about learning them! However, there were two I distinctly that I was disappointed in as I felt they were not good arrangements. Hence, I didn't print them out or learn them, despite enjoying the songs so much. The first of these was "The Blue Skies Yonder" from Mario Party 2, which I replaced about 1.5-2 years ago (you can find it here, if you're curious). The second of these was this one: "Magma Mountain" from Mario Party 1 (then erroneously titled on the site as "Bowser's Magma Mountain"). However, despite wanting a replacement for both, I replaced "The Blue Skies Yonder" swiftly, but never bothered to even attempt a replacement of "Magma Mountain".

I guess I forgot, that's all.

That is, until an updater was complaining in the Discord of a lack of replacement sheets in the updates and that "an update was not a good one if it didn't have a replacement in it", or something like that. And so I thought to myself, "why don't I do a replacement to appease them?" Then, as I thought about what to replace (especially among the Mario Party sheets), I was reminded of the history I had with this sheet. That settled it for me. I then set about rearranging it, and then replaced the sheet (it was pretty straightforward too!). Personally, I'm glad I did -- it is now a much better sheet. Younger me would've been proud to print it out and learn it! (That isn't to say present me isn't proud, because I most certainly am.) :D

Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling - "The Sailors' Pier"
This one almost feels unfair since it is not even 3 days old, but I don't care! This sheet was so much fun to arrange and everything just... worked! I remember working on for the 12th day of Sheetsmas and everything just fell into place perfectly. No weird things, no crazy "how on earth do you make this part for piano" nonsense, just straightforward music and it felt amazing. I am so proud of the finished product, it stands at #3 here. I look forward to submitting this sheet in the near future! Provided school doesn't kill me first! :)

Mario Party 2 - "Horror Land"
This was my primary Halloween project submission (the other being a Mario Party 4's "The Boo House", which was a backup sheet I did for 2020's Halloween project) and I had so much fun with it. Of course, as a Mario Party song, this is right up my alley, but this was a really straightforward songs that lends itself well to a piano arrangement. And, by sheer coincidence, Mario Party Superstars included in this board in the collection (though I had already started working on the sheet before it was announced). Given the coincidental timing and the niceness of it, I am very proud of this sheet. This is one of those sheets that I look at the finished product and I see simplicity, in its finest. In the words of Chopin, "Simplicity is the final achievement", and I feel I have come close to achieving that here. Was that too corny? :P

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam - "Mixed-Up Scramble"
I am extremely happy with this sheet. This is probably one of the longest (page-wise) songs I've worked on to date, but not nearly as complex as some songs I've worked on. As someone who enjoyed Paper Jam (gameplay good, plot bad), I've always enjoyed the main battle theme for this game and I've always wanted an arrangement of it like the other battle themes from the other Mario & Luigi games, which others have done (and done amazing work with).

However, here I rose to the occasion.

Despite not knowing what I was getting into, I spent the summer working on this arrangement, and it came pretty easily, which was nice. When school returned and, despite my dumpster-fire class this past semester, I still found time to chip and chisel away at it, all the while, I was growing happier and happier with the result. Eventually, it reached a state where I felt it was submission-ready. I planned on posting it near Thanksgiving and submitting it sometime in early December, but, my crazy class wouldn't allow that, and "conspired" with my senior project class to flood me with schoolwork during that time, so decided to postpone it until after school ended. However, whilst doing my busywork and studying for my finals, I still often opened it up, tweaked it here and there, and indulged in the playback of the sheet. Even now, I still love listening to it. Then, come the 12 Days of Sheetsmas, amid the uncertainty of wanting to participate, I decided to just "go for it" and gave it the honor of getting the Day 1 slot, finally posting it, which I had planned to do over the Christmas break anyway.

All's that to say it's certainly the sheet I'm the most proud of this year and, whilst not submitted yet (very soon, I assure you), it's an easy, no-contest pick for my #1 slot. :)
[close]
I realize how little I actually did this year in terms of arranging. Nevertheless, I certainly feel like I have improved since I first started, which is really what counts. And, with having formalized a method of going from MuseScore to Finale, I feel proud of what I've accomplished. However, 2022 is the year I graduate, enter the workforce (with a job already in hand too!), and begin a new chapter of my life. Whilst I don't know what life has in store for me post-graduation, I am anxious to be able to dedicate solid time, really get serious with arranging, and take my music skills to the next level! (Even if that level-up is just going from "amateur" to "slightly-less amateur". :P)

Merry Christmas Everyone! :D

For the final sheet of this rapid-sheet-posting extravaganza, I originally had a different sheet in the works, but it's still in need of some heavy work, so it won't be posted today. However, what's more Christmas-y than bugs? Mice, apparently. Cute bugs, too! How does that make bugs relate to Christmas? That's right, another Bug Fables sheet because why not! :)

I actually did this one today in a just a couple hours because of how nice and straightforward it is (I had some extra time after family). It's a wonderful jig that is very reminiscent of the sea shanties of old. Don't blame me if it gets stuck in your head! :P

Day 12:
Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling - "The Sailors' Pier"
[PDF] [MIDI] [MUS] [MUSX]

And with that, I conclude my first-ever 12 Days of Sheetsmas! I honestly can't believe I made it all 12 days, but it was certainly an interesting experience going rapid-fire like this. If I get enough mostly-finished sheets lying around waiting to be finished this time next year, I might consider doing one next year. Maybe.
Anyway, thanks to everyone who looked at my totally-not-rushed sheets and I hope you all have a very merry Christmas! ❤️

Merry Christmas Eve! :)

This time, Paper Mario: Color Splash - the one with the paint and the many, many Paper Toads! I really like this power-up theme as it gets your heart racing and blood pumping, which is fair because it only lasts 20 seconds. This version is the nonstandard version, with no accelerando or pitching up as the timer expires and instead just infinitely repeats. I did do an arrangement of the standard version, but it's just a joke at that point, so I'm not posting that one here.

This sheet I actually forgot about and originally arranged in July of 2019. So yeah. Had to wipe the dust off. :P

Day 11:
Paper Mario: Color Splash - "Unfurl Power"

1 day left!

Ace Attorney time! Specifically, the recollection theme from the 3rd game, 4th case. I find this one to be very powerful and it hits hard right when it needs to.

Since this song has no official translation, there are no shortage of fan-translated titles for it. According to the Ace Attorney wiki (SPOILER WARNING), there are 4 different prefixes ("Recollection", "Reminiscence", "Reminiscing", "Reminiscences") and 7 different titles that fans have used more-or-less interchangeably. Nominally, that means there are 28 different possible full titles for this piece! So, I have no idea what's the correct title. I'm just sticking with the title on the .wav file I've been using to arrange from (which is one of the 28 combinations). ???

Speaking of 28, according to MuseScore, I've been working on this sheet off-and-on for about 28 months now (coincidence, I assure you). Unfortunately, the devil is in the details with this sheet, so it's taken me a long time. However, while I couldn't consider it even remotely perfect, I'm at least satisfied that it has risen to some personal degree of "finished"-ness to justify posting it. Enjoy! :)

Day 10:
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations - "Recollection ~ Scenery Where the Hazy Bridge is Seen"

Almost done!
#83
More Mario Party! :D This is probably my favorite victory theme (at least from the N64 Mario Party games) and it was nice and short, so why not arrange it?

I'm not exactly sure of the title of this piece (since it doesn't appear in the in-game music player), so I went with a title that I found that best summarized what this piece was for. If I come across the actual title (or a better title), I will retitle it. :)

Day 9:
Mario Party 2 - "Win (Multiple Winners)"

Yeah, this one's a cop-out.

A sheet from a cooking game for the holidays. How festive! Except it's Overcooked! 2 so it's anything but peaceful. I love both this game and the original and I love playing them with my friends! Optimization and cooking: this game speaks to me on a personal level.

Anyway, this is the main theme that plays on the main menu. It's a callback to the original's theme, which had basically the same instrumentation, but was more somber. Also, there is an arpeggio every measure! And Finale hates arpeggios! So, I spent like an hour just correcting arpeggios! What fun!

Day 8:
Overcooked! 2 - "Main Theme"

2/3 done!

This is a little fun game compilation on the Switch that has a mix of good games and why-are-these-here games: Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics!

Ever wanted to play a simple game of Concentration/Matching on your Switch? No?
Even with Mario-themed cards? Still no?
Well, how about playing it, but on your piano! Ha! That's the ticket!
8)
(There is actually a piano included in the collection you can play in handheld mode. No, you couldn't play this sheet on that. Too small.)

Drums! Yes, this song has a one-measure-long drum solo just before the repeat and instead of leaving it blank, I decided to add the drum part. Now, I don't play drums nor do I know all the ins and outs of drum playing, so this is all just my best attempt at transcribing what I hear (as everything I write is). :P

Day 7:
Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics - "Matching"

It's getting harder to keep up!

Quote from: Static on December 19, 2021, 07:56:33 PMThis track is composed by Toru Minegishi (as all of the K.K. songs from ACGC/e+/WW are). The live versions are arranged by Kazumi Totaka (the aircheck versions were written first). I would put it in the sheet like that, with the separate arranger listing, or you could just do "Composed by Toru Minegishi & Kazumi Totaka".
So I was right! This is exactly what I had pieced together based on what I read (at least in the case of "Steep Hill", that is), but I wasn't sure of which was composed first. Anyway, thanks to that, I have updated the sheets to reflect that. Thanks! ;D

Quote from: Static on December 19, 2021, 07:56:33 PMThere's a list put together from various interviews and soundtrack listings that I can send you if you want. AC composer credits are hard to find.
That'd be really nice, thank you. This will not be my last Animal Crossing sheet and that will be a nice resource going forward. :)

Quote from: Static on December 19, 2021, 03:17:37 PMAlways glad to see more classic Animal Crossing sheets around here, this looks really good.
Cheers! :D

Quote from: Static on December 19, 2021, 03:17:37 PMThe e+ aircheck for this particular track actually is slightly different to later iterations, with the guitar accompaniment played longer/legato instead of staccato. It hasn't been posted anywhere online, so I guess you'll have to take my word on it though... You could theoretically arrange it and submit it if you wanted.
Huh, fascinating. Given that I'm not a huge fan of the current aircheck, you've got me curious of what it sounds like. However, if I ever wanted to pursue that and/or arrange it, I guess I would probably seek out a romhack of it and go from there. (This is a hypothetical pls don't sue me Nintendo.)

Quote from: Static on December 19, 2021, 03:17:37 PMI agree with your game title for this, I think it makes sense to only use the Japan titles for tracks exclusive to those releases, otherwise like the entire GC soundtrack would be under DnM on N64 (except for the Kapp'n songs which are different from those in DnM+).
Glad to hear your approval! And your logic makes sense. Funnily enough, I was tempted to ask you to fact-check this before I posted. But given that this is part of a "quantity-over-quality" sheet-posting event, I decided that I could do that and correct it later, especially if and when I would decide to get serious about submitting this. But you've saved me the trouble! :P
However, I was wondering if you knew who actually composed it. I ask because the aircheck has a documented composer, but the live version does not (at least, none that I could find). I have a hunch I know who it is based on my readings, but even then, it lacks any factual basis and would necessitate a logical leap at some point. But, at the the end of the day, it's really a minor issue compared to the actual content of the sheet.

Quote from: Static on December 19, 2021, 03:17:37 PMAll of the "new" K.K. tracks in WW were first in e+, and K.K. Birthday was as well, though unobtainable.

Just some trivia for you lol
Interesting! I kept seeing the results of this in my research and thought it was curious, but I didn't realize the full scope of it. :o Always happy to hear some Animal Crossing trivia, especially since I'm a relative latecomer to the series (or most series, for that matter). :)
#88
Time for an Animal Crossing sheet! Specifically, a K.K. Slider song: Steep Hill! The aircheck version of this song is already on the site, so I decided to do the live version of this song. And, yes, technically this song first appeared in Doubutsu no Mori e+ not Wild World, but (a) I don't want to sound pretentious, (b) the song was only available by scanning an e-Reader card in a Japan-only game, and (c) the aircheck is listed under Wild World on the site and they have always been together in every game they've appeared in. So yeah, that's my logic. :P

This is one of my favorite K.K. songs. More often than not, a lot of his "sad" songs really aren't all that sad. This one, on the other hand, hits real hard in the feels. While the aircheck version is good, I feel all the "sadness" that exists is zapped away because the tempo is about 25% faster, it's bouncier, and has an electric guitar, among other things. With this version, I feel you can really let the true emotion of the piece shine a lot brighter due to its simplicity and slower tempo. Enjoy! :D

Day 6:
Animal Crossing: Wild World - "Steep Hill"

Half way done!
#89
What do mean Halloween was 1.5 months ago? Anyway, that's no excuse for not doing a Luigi's Mansion 3 sheet! For this one, I wasn't sure of the title. Some OSTs have its subtitle as the "Vestibule", others have it as the "(Distant Piano)", so I decided to pull out my copy of Luigi's Mansion 3 (metaphorically, of course, because I have the digital version) and check the in-game music player to see what's called and apparently it's just subtitled "Track 1". So yeah. That's apparently what it's called. :-\

Anyway, this song has some major (no pun intended) "Moonlight Sonata Mvt. 1" vibes, so I borrowed the tempo marking "Adagio sostenuto" from that piece. Also, a really cool detail is you can actually see the piano in the game playing this song note-for-note, which I thought was really cool (but then again, Luigi's Mansion 3 is the king of having small details). Finally, given the simplicity of this sheet, I am 99% sure somebody's already arranged this; it's just sitting around in an arrangement thread somewhere. :P

Day 5:
Luigi's Mansion 3 - "The Great Stage - Track 1"

I quite like the number 5.

Quote from: Libera on December 17, 2021, 12:45:55 PMI instantly recognised this one and was confused because I've never played this game, but then I remembered that Levi made a sheet of this ages ago and I offered some feedback on it back then.
I was wondering if anyone else had done it; it's a really simple song and I was surprised to find it not on the site yet. Nonetheless, thanks for bringing this to my attention! There is some good feedback there that I can definitely use to help my sheet in case I ever elect to submit this sheet.

Quote from: Libera on December 17, 2021, 12:45:55 PMYou can look at my posts to get similar feedback if you want, but the main takeaway is that I really don't think this is in 4/4 throughout.  Particularly those repeated three bar phrase sections make more sense in 3/4 to me.
Huh. That's very interesting. Looking over the sheet, I can definitely see how you can see that. I'll certainly have to look more into this and play around with it.

Quote from: Libera on December 17, 2021, 12:45:55 PMGood luck with the remaining eight sheets!
Thanks! :D
