Quote from: Cobraroll on June 26, 2009, 07:21:18 AM^Well, by the look of your arrangement and apparent piano skills, we all assumed that "This guy must be seriously dedicated to piano playing"

Then you come tell us that piano is a sort of side-hobby. Now we wonder why we haven't heard about you before. If you're even better at singing than piano, and manage to combine those skills, you'll reach far.
Maybe I'm just talented. But I have combined my skills towards writing some more serious compsitions; symphonies, concertos, etc.

What a coincidence! I just finished a virtuoso arrangement of the piece, of course if that's what you're into I mean.

Quote from: MaestroUGC on June 22, 2009, 11:30:52 PMPiano, self taught, 3 years, Virtuoso flare and ambition, but moderate ability...the first pice I learned was Liszt's 6th Hungarian Rhapsody, took 6 months to learn...

You're crazy! Im in the piano 8th grade (last one) and even for me is very hard to play... Still, Ive learned it in 1,5 week.
You should play easier songs (not easy songs, just easier) because playing harder pieces than your skills only will create problems. Not only in techniques, but also physical problems, like in your wrists, hands, arms, and fingers... Ive open my wrist playing the last theme of that Rhapsody, because of the sucessive 8vas in the RH. So, be careful with yourself  ;)

Trust me, I took it very slow on that piece, I know my limits. But I prefer playing the harder pieces, and I actually know the proper techniques to play. So don't worry about me, besides, I'm a singer before a pianist.

Wait, which Hungarian Rhapsody, No. 2 right? That's a popular piece, but I prefer the 6th and the 12th, but if you really want a flashy piece, Grand Galop Chromatique. Just look for the music on ISMLP and it'll make your hands cramp.

Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 13

I figured I'd just give it a shot, This is my most popular orchestral composition at the moment, but is easily not my best when compared to my other music I'm currently working on.

Apollo, Bringer of the Sun
YouTube
MUS

This is a symphonic poem that chronicles the journey Apollo takes as he carries the Sun across the sky, and its effects on the Earth below. Each phase is signaled by the chiming bells, marking the time.

I. Dawn - It opens with the break of twilight, the light flickering across the sky. Apollo's arrival is signaled and the sun begins to rise with an exclamation as the world begins to stir.
II. Morning - The world is alive and moving, the orchestra plays a pastoral theme, with the horns singing out in praise of Apollo.
III. Noon - The Sun takes its place at the top of the sky, and the Earth below feels its brutal heat.
IV. Afternoon - The Sun makes its down from its peak, and the children are outside at play. Marked by the winds and a light nature, the orchestra relates this brief scherzando with a climax as the Apollo begins to make his leave.
V. Sunset - The Sun begins to set, with a reprise of the sunrise, the orchestra majestically bids Apollo a farewell as the light begins to leave the sky.
VI. Night - The Earth lies calm as the people settle in their home for the night. A simple motif acts as a psuedo-lullaby that lulls the Earth into its slumber.
VII. Dusk - The Earth is cast in its darkness, the Night is full, and a final tension is released with the Moon taking its peak.

I would just like some feedback, whether it be good or bad, as it would greatly help my writing, or at least fix some problems.

You are amazing, the Liszt transcripitions are so amazing, especially the 9th Symphony. But these transcriptions, in my opinion, don't live up to the orchestral masterpieces written by Beethoven. I've been looking everywhere for these, thank you.

The Rachmaninoff prelude just has overlapping chords, nothing too unusual, and I third the notion of it being a great piece.

Don't you just love how people compare impossibilties to Rachmaninoff and Liszt?

No, adding notes in certain areas, it creates discomfort in the right hand.
#5488
Apparently sonata form is much simpler than what it sounds like...
#5489
Hmm, this may just a case of different interpretations.

I did that with the athletic theme to make playing easier, becuase what you're suggesting will create discomfort and overcrowding.

On the underwater theme, if you've ever studied waltzes, or at least Strauss, the harmony is not a harmony, but rather an equal part of the melody. Yeah the melody itself needs to to still be heard, but revoicing to what you're saying will make it sound forced and akward.

I've taken every thing regarding ability and timbre into consideration, besides it's still left up to the player how to play it, I know I add or change notes for certain pieces. I respect your criticisms and I'll keep them in mind for the future.
