This is a question mainly to the owner/s of this site. And to anyone else who cares.

Why do we allow profanity1? It does nothing to help us. We don't need it. It drives away the younger generations ("kiddies"  >:() IT DOESN"T HELP US.

I'm 16. The majority of the people in my school cuss(see 1). I    do    not    like    it. I've heard many people complain about people here being jerks. I'm one of those people who complain. One of the main things is respect. They, the people who use profanity, do not understand(or care) that some of us do not like it. If it's the not understanding part, fine. Hopefully now they know that not everyone here like profanity.
if it's the not caring, then you'll lose members who would otherwise strengthen this community. If my parents found me on a site with this much profanity, I'd be kicked off. No doubt about it. Then, you'd lose one of your members. You'd still keep those who profane, of course, those who are constantly corrupting this site. And then nobody of any decent value would come.

Am I making too much of a big deal of this? I say NO. I see profanity on just about every page nowadays. I want it to stop. But that's as far as I can go. Wanting. Wishing. Now, I'm acting.

I want this site to grow. I'm a large fan of video game music. But if this problem is not solved, I will leave. I know of other sites. As far as I know, they don't allow profanity. The occasional "damn," sure, but that's as far as it goes. Profanity is actually looked down upon there.

I don't want to leave. But I can't stay if this site is like this. It's not worth it to me. Most people of any decent value are at GMW. They don't use profanity. I can name 6 people off the top of my head who swear on almost, almost, every post. Maybe every other post. But that's too much. I don't even want to see the F-word anywhere on this site.

Thank you for reading my long post. I'm not sorry about it's length; but I feel very strongly about this. Cast your opinions. Reply. Make your voice be heard. Freedom of Speech and all that. I'm sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings in writing this. I truly am.

1Profanity/cuss/swearing: The use of foul words. The F-Word. H-E-Double Hockey Sticks for those who still use that. Whatever. This is not an actual dictionary definition.

AMEN! I knew i liked something about you. I am truly sick all the nasty language. Sure, i've tried to just get used to it, but it doesn't work. Sure, i dont care much about damn or hell, but it pretty much ends there. All profanity gets us is hurt feelings and loss of members. I could name you about 5 people that do it every other post, 4 of which in almost every post. Im sick of it and this nasty language should end post-haste. I vote "No" for use of profanity!

Palagerini

right on =P. we all don't like to see profanity all over the place... me i don't care but it annoys some people.. i remember someone saying how NSM is kinda like a family.. and i agree... there's been alot of hating around here toward some people... if this carries on then were going to be the NSM family.. 5 times removed... literally.. and i think this is one of the reasons why.. basically what i'm saying is try not to use profanity... but if u do then don't direct at someone else..

Dude

...We have profanity because the "kiddies" or w/e you call them are n00bs. Well... 90% of the time ::)

Brawler4Ever

Dude has the right to an opinion. Even if some of us don't agree with it.

But, Dude, could you please explain why we should allow profanity? How does it help the forum?
I'm honestly curious about your views, and the views of everybody else the says "Yes" to profanity.

Quote from: Palagerini on August 13, 2008, 05:54:12 PMor what about  u can't swear massively.. like what gamer said... and u can't swear directly to someone..? so it doesn't hurt anyone and so u dont' see the F-Nuclear Bomb dropped everywhere.. i think that sounds fair...

the people that want to swear can and the people who don't want to don't get offended by it... and the people who want to can't swear massively...

It's alright to swear very occasionally. It's going to happen rarely here and there, at least, that's the ideal mindset that the staff has for that rule. It's not completely forbidden in the rules, but it's not allowed either. I think the staff are trying to get the point across that there's room for leniency on that rule, as long as your swearing isn't excessively abundant. I for one don't personally swear much, ever. It's not that I hold these morals against it; it's that it completely ruins any sense of serious  message your trying to send by making you seem like an immature child who can needs to scream out swear words over everyone in order to feel like he's been heard.

The purpose of it is to attract attention to what your saying, so that people will take you more seriously because of the harshness in your sentence. By doing this, you've actually created the opposite effect, and now everyone realizes what you're trying to do(said reason above), and knows that you just want attention; dismissing you as a casual whiny 13 year old trying to feel appreciated.

I think, though, that while swearing may be morally wrong to some, it should not be against the rules to the strictness that you're trying to invoke. If someone is swearing excessively, and it bothers you, report them to a moderator or admin and they'll take care of it. This site, or forums actually, like most forums, has a rule that all users must be or be over the age of 13 to join, otherwise your membership is considered illegal and you are UUA. If this isn't obvious to most, I think everyone should do a read-up on the rules for the site.

Just shut up already Brawler! You've made your point.

Don't do things just to be rude to other members.
Don't post messages or images about how you think another member is being rude or obusing you, please contact Concerto or Dekudude.

Threads that complain about the rules or mods. If you have a problem with either of these, please PM us directly â€" don’t make a public spectacle out of it.

OBSERVE COMMON FORUM ETIQUETTE

That means doing things like marking spoilers, staying on topic, marking NSFW stuff as NSFW, and all the other little things that have come to define proper etiquette on the internet. Manners, basically.

=P we don't have any porn i just felt like highlighting that =P. perhaps we should find a way to compromise Gooch and Brawler with Dude and everyone else not including me.

This is a classic example as to why or where swearing might be bad. This is flaming, it's no wonder you're warned, superfire. Brawler's doing nothing wrong and I respect that he's made a thread like this for the purpose of discussion. He's asking for everyone's opinions and reasons, while providing his own. This is how intellectuals converse, it should be balantly obvious to most. I think Palagerini just furthered my point in my post when he posted the rules. It's showing room for leniency, if it's allowed.

Harvest

Well there is no way I can leave the site so I might as well comply with what the members want.

No more swears people.

Yeah, apparantly other sites dont care too much for NSM, so i think by cleaning up our act a little might bring back some good tidings.

Palagerini

well u don't necessarily have to give up swearing all together.... just cut it down some... just don't hurt other people and swear like 5 times in a post...

i think a problem is that a lot of newer members seem to think that they will instantly be accepted into the community and thus post as if they believe they're someone known and respected on the forum, when frankly, the new people are not instantly respected...

a prime example of this is (not to single this newer member out), the one who posted something of the likes "I DEMAND Calling of the Night" or something like that in the request topic... and naturally no one likes someone with an attitude like that, EVEN though that person was apparently just joking...

so naturally, the older members of the forum tend to get frustrated quicker because they are the older members of the forum, and i think they expect that newer members be respectful (not in a superiority-inferiority sort of system) but to simply be respectful... and this prompts the usage of swearing and such... if there was a mutual respect between members, then there would be little to no swearing on the forum... i can't speak as being one of the oldest members of the forum, but i've been here for about one year, and it's only recently that the amount of swearing has jumped up...

personally though, i think that no rule should be put on swearing... people should just learn to use swearing for emphasis, on something serious or something important, not as a normal, casual adjective to slap on to the end of your statements... which goes to another point, which is that it seems (to me), that many people post without thinking, but that's a whole different thing...

sorry for the block of text lol...
It's on a need-to-know basis that you don't need to know.
