I'm working on walking in ivalice and in the beginning and throughout most of the piece there's a part in the strings where it sounds like a chord with the top note being trilled.
what I'm wondering is how would I notate that. what I have written in at the moment is just the trill articulation over the chords and I'm not sure if that's the proper way to do it or if when the performer sees it, they'll know to trill only the top note and whatnot.

The trill only applies to the top note in chords. If you have one note being trilled, with the other fingers doing something else, then you need to use the trill tool under the smart shapes to articulate that.
Try to do everything; you're bound to succeed with at least one.
