At least one of the pokemon must not have managed to beat anyone, and thus would not have gained any experience under normal conditions.

in a way, yes. but it's rather minimal. but you also have to remember that they are lower levels and not needing as much experience to level up. plus they went quite a bit without fainting, if you read in context. the battle took like, half to 3/4 of a day.
